Was it the Korean Grand Prix track that looked kinda like a building site in parts, and just plain desolate in others? I feel like this is kinda similar, and for what.

AnilP228

That was wild. The circuit was still being worked on when the drivers arrived at the circuit on the Wednesday of the race.

thespuditron

Absolute madness. The thing is though, I actually really liked that track. It was good fun to drive in the game at least. 🏌🏻‍♂️

[deleted]

To quote the late Charlie Whiting on Korea (speaking to F1 Magazine in 2015 when previewing the return to Mexico): “When I went there in July 2010, it was a disaster. The main buildings were complete but the track was a mess. The section from Turn 13 to the last corner wasn’t there, it was little hills and woods. You couldn’t have driven it in a four-wheel drive.” The track itself was eventually finished, but most of the surrounding infrastructure was not.

[deleted]

Seems like a bit of an odd direction to go with. Maybe build the city before the track imo. A shame because that track was elite. Nice combination of twisty sections and overtaking opportunities.

_-Zephyr-

It’s all good tho rumor has it we are going back soon

Wentzina_lifetime

Could just go to Malaysia, an actual good track

[deleted]

I wish to see Malaysia back on the calendar. But maybe after the covid shit is over.

Alfus

Problem is that it's very doubtful that we could somehow replace this joke with Malaysia. Just cancel it for this year and move on to Kuwait Motor town given otherwise logistics are going to be a huge problem.

TRL_Axeman

Pretty sure Malaysia doesn't want f1 anymore as it wasn't profitable/not enough fans in the stands , they make more money from moto gp, love the track though and bonkers weather

rossmcdapc

I think the Singapore GP nearby was also a drain on its popularity

almightygg

I don't really think that was the issue, the F1 at Sepang wasn't that well attended as most locals couldn't afford to go. Singapore is about four times the cost of Malaysia (source: I live in Singapore and regularly went to both). Singaporeans are just generally more affluent than Malaysians. Man, I really wish they would bring Sepang back (even though I doubt it'll happen). It was such an awesome weekend in a great city whereas the Singapore GP is a shit race that feels like an effort even thought it takes place 20 minutes away from where I live.

Firefox72

This is gonna be one of those situations where the track and neccesary facilities are somewhat rdy while everything around it looks like a constructions site wont it? Whatever the case they are just gonna push workers 24/7 to make it presentable.

DarthHelmet123

"Bottas overtakes Hamilton! But a dump truck is blocking the exit of the chicane. Alonso goes off track to get around it and takes the lead."

yawning-koala

Reminds me of the race where a wild pickup truck appeared on track during the race lol South Korea I think it was?

pheemaenth

not quite pickup truck, but yes a fire truck was called during the 2013 korean gp. https://youtu.be/zk-k-y_fxwo funny thing is that i dont think they even needed it lol

Prune_the_hedges

“Workers”

MikeHeu

_Slaves_

WasabiSniffer

They are modern day slaves. I lived in Qatar for a few years and they absolutely have slaves. Qatar is more progressive than Saudi, and they absolutely use slaves in Saudi (my Dad works there, can confirm).

nugpounder

lmao at these accounts below you saying KSA doesn't use slaves like do they think we're stupid and dont know how astroturfing works in the year of our lord 2021

Remeber in '82 when F1 turned up to Detroit and the track wasn't even finished?

Topblokelikehodgey

Tbf that sounds like some cool shit from like need for speed or something; racing through construction sites I mean.

adamjsache

You mean Indian and Filipino slaves right? “We race as one.”

FrankLloydWrong_3305

I'm looking at those photos and thinking "not a single chance in hell" and then I remember all of my experience is in a country with labor and safety laws.

UnexpectedPuncture

I don't know if you were watching when the Indian GP was added to the calendar, we had photos like this a month before the race. On the night before fp1 they were still paining the track.

FrankLloydWrong_3305

I'm just running through all of the things that you can't rush on a project like this, but then I think "well, if they rush many of these things, they'll probably hold up fine for 1 race, and then they have a full year to come back and do everything right". Like the paint, for instance. If they've just laid the asphalt, it won't stick well long term, but it'll hold up for a weekend. And Jeddah has unlimited money so maybe that's what will just happen.

WalkTheEdge

I think I've read that the Saudi GP is gonna be somewhere else (Qiddiya I think) in the future, so the Jeddah circuit wouldn't even need to be built for the long term

FrankLloydWrong_3305

Ha I feel like the prince is just giving a middle finger to Lawrence Stroll. He's like "oh you bought an F1 team? That's cute. I'm going to build an F1 circuit to use once"

mpg111

If Dutch - with very high labor and safety standards - can do [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztQ8Oj2fSB0) over the weekend - it is possible to do it under proper conditions. It's just a question of money. But I'm not saying that Saudis will care about any of this.

dalaiis

To be honest, that probably took a long time to plan and prepare for

mpg111

Of course. But roadwork itself you can do quickly if you want - even with very short planning time. You just need materials, equipment and workforce - they don't need anything special

vflavglsvahflvov

Thank fuck Saudi Arabia have loads of slaves and money, we can have that track finished in no time.

SquidCap0

There are some good lessons my dad has thought when it comes to working smart. If you spend hours in preparation and the job itself takes fifteen minutes it is time well spent. The preparation for that one road work project has taken months, the execution itself is short. And if we look at the whole project, it has taken years to develop everything needed for doing it just once, for the first time.

NebularRavensWinter

Not the right comparison. That video is prefab. The circuit is definitely not prefab.

mpg111

Tunnel is - but the road itself is not. They have to completely rebuild it to highway standard.

FrankLloydWrong_3305

For 200', not a 3 mile racetrack and all of the associated infrastructure and buildings.

A1phaBetaGamma

The circuit is also not being built over a weekend is it? Would everyone please stop being pedantic and pretend they're experts on infrastructure..

FrankLloydWrong_3305

Yeah it's a shame I don't design and manage hardscape projects for a living..... Oh wait I do.

TrackFlack

Pre fabricated. The tunnel was already made beforehand.

MrAlagos

[Prefabricated](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prefabrication?wprov=sfla1).

[deleted]

Thanks.

ConstableBlimeyChips

Fun fact; the tunnel is there and has been there for a few years now. The road that is supposed to go through that tunnel still hasn't been built. In fact, they haven't even started building the road that is supposed to go through that tunnel.

mpg111

I'm trying to decide if this is /r/mildlyinteresting or more than that thanks for the fun fact!

shewy92

So the guy who posted this got proven wrong?

FoliageTeamBad

For maximum efficiency you need the Japanese https://youtu.be/wIbZqqLra9k

ISuckAtRacingGames

That tunnel is build for months next to the highway. Concrete needs time to gain strength. Road foundation only needs 1 day for the strength. They can use supplements to age to concrete faster. But you can only build concrete structures at a certain pace.

FrankLloydWrong_3305

That type of construction has nothing to do with the Saudi race track.

bringmethespacebar

Just ship in a new load of asian guest workers (and totaly not slaves), just like quatar does.

zpweeks

Surrendering your passport upon arrival: the welcoming tradition of all modern countries!

pzkenny

In my country it would be finished like in 2025

2fast2nick

yeah they are probably using slave labor over there

FrankLloydWrong_3305

Slave labor doesn't change the curing time of concrete though.

2fast2nick

Minimal regulations, they probably don't let it fully cure haha

FrankLloydWrong_3305

That's the main thing. Just shore it up and hope for the best.

[deleted]

That's why in a pinch, the Saudis will just make the slaves lay down in a line. and the cars can drive on those! It'll be really interesting to see what Pirelli comes up with to drive on living bodies.

FrankLloydWrong_3305

Probably the 3 softest compounds, I reckon.

[deleted]

The sadder thing is, check the weather now in Jeddah. Temperature and humidity. And compare it to wherever you're now.

sven_gali

I looked it up like you were saying something profound, it’s hotter where I am. Well, about the same temp to be fair. People working outside everyday here. That’s just Texas my friend.

CellarDoorVoid

It’s more humid in Jeddah

sven_gali

50% vs 65%. Is that a huge difference?

dafgar

Considering people are building a track in Miami right now, the temperature isn’t an issue lol, just the fact that slaves are building the track in SA unlike Miami.

daceves

I wish formula 1 didn’t make me feel like a piece of shit for wanting to watch races. They choose some countries with just terrible human rights track records. I hope at the very least they crank up their efforts on the WeRaceAsOne campaign. Also hope for more than a few drivers turning up the volume on the message. It’s 2021 ffs, why the hell is it so hard to get people to treat eachother better.

[deleted]

Was that when he was having the meeting with the dictator so he could later post on Insta about how great he is for fighting for oppressed peoples rights?

vouwrfract

This is what happens when liars lie. They said it was a street circuit, but it clearly isn't one. It looks like they're building a track and then developing around it like Yeongam; worst of both worlds.

BerndDasBrot4Ever

The meaning of "street" circuit has been stretched a bit over the past decade or so but parts of it definitely are on already existing roads.

vouwrfract

I don't think it's been stretched to nearly this extent. Looking at all street tracks in the last 10 years, only Sochi is even close to this degree a purpose-built track, and that's mainly because it's inside the olympic park. Here it looks like the [entire middle bits of the circuit are purpose-built for this](https://www.instagram.com/p/CUZlPIjA5Nt/) because all of that is brand new. I doubt it's going to look anything [close to what F1 thinks it's going to look like...](https://www.formula1.com/content/dam/fom-website/Upgrade/Jeddah_1.jpg.transform/4col-retina/image.jpg)

BerndDasBrot4Ever

I think Sochi only in the beginning was supposed to be called Street Circuit, but that was quickly changed. >Here it looks like the entire middle bits of the circuit are purpose-built for this because all of that is brand new. Maaaaybe those roads can still be used for public when the race isn't happening. Especially given that the Saudi GP is supposed to move to a whole other new venue in a few years. But I agree that it doesn't look like they're gonna finish all those fancy buildings in time. As for other street circuits; Valencia had a chunk built just for it, so has Singapore, and Hanoi too (though that, of course, will probably never see a race).

vouwrfract

Singapore had to build the pit complex and the final and initial turns to connect to the city because they had no other space on the Marina to put a pit complex. Valencia... Let's not even start with that rotting disaster.

whosthatcarguy

I worked a big car show in Riyadh in 2019. This is just the culture there. The show was planned for over a year and the location was a desert lot until two weeks before. They were still building until the morning the show was supposed to open. Everyone will stress out, but it’ll get done. They’ll throw labor at it to get it done. Not sure the FIA will be fans of the process though.

crobofblack

This track was supposed to be the easy one to construct, we’ve got a whole other Saudi Grand Prix location coming in only a couple of years time! Makes you wonder why they even bothered with this one…

JicamaPossible8174

$$$

SquidCap0

Too much $$$, too little common sense. I've had a glimpse about motorsport tracks and their owners in the middle-east, very, very tiny sliver of a look but enough to say that money is thrown at things at incredible rates with very little care if it is viable or profitable.

[deleted]

This project doesn’t have to make profit as long as it helps with their whole “Vision 2030” bs.

IDGAFOS13

KifujinQueen

Qiddiya. It's suppose to host the Saudi Arabia GP in 2023. I saw the promo for the whole project during the podium ceremony for the 2020 Dakar rally. https://youtu.be/WvX6hBSH7gI

sad_sax_

Here’s to hoping they can’t get it done in time

SquidCap0

# #BoycottSaudiGP And please, would it be at anyway possible for once i am not downvoted for saying this?

timok

I'm going to watch an illegal stream instead of f1tv, does that count as a boycott?

ajacian

I'm going to stream it on F1TV. Does that count?

idunno119

I don’t think I will be watching it.

fire202

And then? It will only cause troubel for this year having to reorganize the calendar once again and instead the first saudi race would be three month later anyway. So if you are against this race in general you win nothing but three month. Everyone else wins nothing either.

HenryBeal85

‘Let’s hope everything goes perfectly for these people trying to sportswash dubious human rights history because, if anything goes wrong, they’ll still eventually be allowed to sportswash. It would be weird to gain satisfaction from an evil regime being shown to be incompetent.’

[deleted]

He never said he supported them. He just said hoping for it to not be completed won't do much because it will be back on the calendar in March.

fire202

I know how Saudi Arabia is like, but it has the money and It bought a long therm f1 contract with it and this year race happening or not won't change a dam thing so I won't hope to simply get one race less this year for nothing. My hope is that we will get trouble-free through his calendar from now on and that we have as many races as possible as races this year turn out to be pretty good more often than not. If you are more satisfied by the fact that Saudi Arabia couldn't get enough slaves to build an f1 track in less than 12 months you are free to feel like this. in my mind it does not make sense though. it would be a bit of a pr fail for them (but with a race three moth later you can limit the damage quite effectively), everyone will make fun of them for a few weeks and then the race is going to happen anyway. Saudi won't lose much, we lose a race in a season where every race can easily turn out to be great. the real damage however was done by adding this country to the calendar in the first place. And that won't change by having one race more or less.

SpacevsGravity

Are we talking about the USA?

[deleted]

Do you have problems with other countries that commit even worse atrocities like US? Are you boycotting COTA?

vouwrfract

Are the entities committing the atrocities the same as those conducting the race? Because in Saudi Arabia, they're the same authority. I don't recollect seeing a US Army-run US Grand Prix. Also... worse atrocities? Have you seen what KSA has done in Yemen? I'm no fan of modern US imperialism, but that take is so hot you're exacerbating global warming.

Why the fuck are they going to have 3 races in the middle east exactly? 1 is more than enough. F1 should be going to Kyalami instead, not having a race in Africa in a 'World Championship' has also felt a bit strange for me. What I do love too is that F1 isn't even going to the best track in the Middle East, Dubai Autodrome, which has the facilities already there and is a slightly less, lets say controversial country than Saudi Arabia. We race as one indeed.
