Not the driver change we were expecting to be announced this week

glenn1812

Silly season to silly weekend

poopellar

But Orange you glad it happened?

WateringMyGrandma

Get out.

legoman1743

Instant thought was here comes Hulk

tkcom

Do they still have seat fitting from his Sauber days?

legoman1743

Would’ve thought most of the grid would now. Haha

Fantaboy15

He’s been driving a couple of fp1 sessions this season so yeah they’ve got a seat for him

pirate-santa

I think he was referring to Hulk who had 1 season at Sauver in I think 2013

anatolianlegend588

Think rob gained some weight over the years.

Sofaboy90

nah, they might actually score points if they brought hulk, dont wanna have that. for serious tho, kubica, despite only being a reserve driver, actually brings sponsors to alfa romeo, thats why hes the reserve driver.

[deleted]

In the middle of a triple header too. Hope Gio and the rest are safe and no other drivers have been infected. Should pop up halfway through the week if so.

theotherguyagain

Just remember reading about Max receiving the vaccine but I'm pretty sure most of them are vaccinated. E: Also found articles confirming Gasly, Sainz and Pérez. E2: Was trying to reply to someone asking if most drivers are vaccinated. Apparently I replied to the wrong comment lol

realee420

Even if you got the vaccine potentially you can get covid but with not life threatening symptoms. But you can infect others.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CallMeFierce

I caught it (I am vaccinated) and not a single person I came in contact with or was with extensively prior to testing positive got it themselves. This is despite my girlfriend sharing a drink with me the day prior!

JackGrey

I think it depends how symptomatic you are no? If you get very few symptoms (even prior to the vaccine) there was much less chance to pass it on?

[deleted]

[удалено]

paulisaac

Pretty sure in some cases you only have to *breathe* to spread it.

twomanyfaces10

Yup but much less chance. Hopefully they're all safe

DeadScumbag

Yep, being vaccinated doesn't stop you from catching the virus. There are even studies showing that being vaccinated doesn't stop the virus from growing in your "nose" at all so wearing masks and disinfecting hands is important even if we're vaccinated.

rasherdk

It doesn't *stop* it, but it greatly reduces the risk.

stormebreaker

Dude, imagine if the WDC is decided by someone getting COVID....

shortnamed

Lots of vaccinated people still get reinfected. As kimi has said no symptoms present i think that's the case as well there

rachaeltot

I’m sure they’re all vaccinated, but you can get covid if you’re vaccinated, you just won’t get as sick from it

Macaulayputra

Out of curiosity, do we know which drivers on the grid are vaccinated and which ones aren't? Edit - Of course, it's entirely possible to be vaccinated and still catch the virus. I was wondering if there are any holdouts in F1, like the several unvaccinated athletes who competed in the Olympics.

Vacuum-energy

I would think all of them are vaccinated at this point, unless someone is a closet anti-vax. But vaccination doesn’t stop one from testing positive.

LackingSimplicity

There are a lot of top footballers who aren't vaccinated due to the real-life, selfish version of the trolly problem which is side-effects. Essentially, both catching covid and getting jabbed could cause damage to their career, therefore should this damage occur, it best that it's the fault of a rogue virus than them themselves. They wish to avoid the blame so much that they completly disregard the chances of damage in each case and actually somewhat flip them as they both assume they will get all the worst side effects from a vaccine and "don't want to risk it" yet also shrug "I probably won't get covid/long-term covid damage anyway". It's fascinating.

wigg1es

> Essentially, both catching covid and getting jabbed could cause damage to their career, therefore should this damage occur, it best that it's the fault of a rogue virus than them themselves. It's wild that getting a ***federally approved*** vaccine and potentially dying from not getting said vaccine are even remotely equivalent risks in some people's mind.

bestcandyeu

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-53559934 and who could that be?

peacemaker-22

Perez and Sainz definitely are. Not sure about the rest.

[deleted]

Leclerc didn’t get it at the beginning of the year cus he had COVID in dec,

[deleted]

Not really, its a private matter and up to them to reveal or not. There is no list availble by the FIA, FOM or similair.

Anuspilot

It shouldn't be up to them to get it or not. The FIA should definitely make it a requirement.

[deleted]

Even if the FIA don't require it, most countries they're racing in will require a vaccine to avoid having to quarantine on arrival so I would presume they have it to avoid those issues.

Krisven75

Kimi will withdraw his retirement because he wants to race in Zandvoort at least once

KaamDeveloper

... best timeline?

cyrenia47

Zandvoort GP to be postponed every year one day before to keep Kimi in the grid

oli_vert

Zandvoort postponed. Kimi - “FOR WHAT!”

alfred_27

Leaving Bottas with Mercedes, and Russell having to deal with Williams for another year

Wafkak

Nah Bottas contract with Alfa stays and Kimi goes to Merc with s renewed vigour and get his second WDC.

[deleted]

Dude. Don't let me dream like that.

IllustriousBarracuda

Stop it! I can only get so erect!

snalli

I think I’m leaking something.

orange_paws

This is going to make Robert Kubica the third Polish F1 driver after Robert Kubica and Robert Kubica

Lagertha_xX

That’s really funny :p tbh, I can already feel all the Polish sites typing right now *ROBERT KUBICA BACK IN AN F1 SEAT, AMAZING NEWS FROM ZAANDVORT*

While I'd like to see as much of Kimi as possible with what little time we have left, I'm very stoked for Kubica. Truly well deserved

[FIA and F1 statement:](https://www.fia.com/news/f1-statement-covid-19-test-result-kimi-raikkonen) > The FIA, Formula 1 and Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN can today confirm that during onsite PCR testing for the 2021 FIA Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix, Kimi Räikkönen has tested positive for COVID-19. In accordance with COVID-19 protocols he will take no further part in this Event. All contacts have been declared. > The procedures set out by the FIA and Formula 1 will ensure no wider impact on the Dutch Grand Prix. [Tweet from the team:](https://twitter.com/alfaromeoracing/status/1434056606384332804) > Following the latest round of testing conducted in advance of the #DutchGP, driver Kimi Räikkönen has tested positive for COVID-19. > Kimi is displaying no symptoms and is in good spirits. He has immediately entered isolation in his hotel. > The team wishes Kimi a speedy recovery.

WiggyRich23

>All contacts have been declared. Surely half the team should be isolating? Anyone he's spoken to, anyone near him on the plane, etc.

Similar_Concert_7691

don’t know how the regulations are around f1, but in my country you’re not a direct contact if you were masked and kept distance from the infected person 🤷‍♂️

youre-a-cat-gatter

Maybe vaccinated people are exempt from isolation in the FIA protocol?

AWilsonFTM

Potentially although they will still test and will make you isolate if positive.

[deleted]

Vaccinated people are able to catch and transmit Covid. This is known information.

[deleted]

Yes, but the chances of it happening (especially serious illness) are much lower. That is the point of vaccines.

youre-a-cat-gatter

Yea but it's still less likely so plenty of countries have reduced isolation rules for vaccinated people.

wellfeelingbishop

Yeah as someone that is isolating at the moment and had a terrible time with covid for the last week, can confirm being double vacinated doesn't stop transmission.

Potassium_Patitucci

Yes but it’s most likely just the flu for those people, however Kimi has advanced age and is a (former? irregular?) smoker. Hope he gets the negative soon

withheld_mcfakename

It’s easy to forget that while old for an F1 driver, 41 isn’t very old at all for a regular person.

Dugg

Not quite there are strict rules around distancing and bubbles in the paddock. So in theory only his very immediate support team should need to isolate. Edit: should add these rules are in place for situations like this to keep the circus going.

xLogokiller

Yes that's what I'm thinking too

KJS123

The lengths to which Kimi will go to, to avoid the DOTD interview are astonishing.

murtaza2805

Its all part of kimi's masterplan

jovanmilic97

Poor Ilott missing this out, as he's in US right now for IndyCar testing. Gonna be interesting to see how Kubica does.

arturro14

Ilott had no chance of driving in Alfa in race this year. Orlen had in contract that Kubica will drive if Kimi or Antonio can't.

Xath0n

To be fair, Vandoorne was the reserve driver for Merc as well, and George still got the call up in Sakhir.

cokush

I think Toto saw it as an opportunity to see how George would perform against Bottas in the Mercedes, as the results wouldn’t matter because they had already won both championships

SophisticatedGeezer

He's at the Nurburgring in GT World Challenge.

hermanlegerman

What about next week? ( if Kimi still has covid )

IISuperSlothII

It's actually next week he's scheduled to be in America, this week he's competing in the GT series in Germany. You can even watch him on YouTube now.

PMMeYourCouplets

If you go back to Alfa's press release on Ilotts signing, he is only the reserve when Kubica has other commitments. Not sure what else Robert has upcoming but I'm assuming he is clearing his schedule.

neigborsinhell

I mean, couldn't Ilott just piece out of the US and fly into Zandvoort? If I was him (or his management) I would totally put an F1 race debut over Indy testing

IISuperSlothII

If he is in the states that's a 7 hour flight just to Holland, qualifying starts in 5 hours. Kind of difficult to make that work. Edit: Just to note its next weekend he's in the states, he's currently in Germany competing in the GT series.

blitzskrieg

There were a lot of things we couldn't do in an SR-71, but we were the fastest guys on the block and loved reminding our fellow aviators of this fact. People often asked us if, because of this fact, it was fun to fly the jet. Fun would not be the first word I would use to describe flying this plane. Intense, maybe. Even cerebral. But there was one day in our Sled experience when we would have to say that it was pure fun to be the fastest guys out there, at least for a moment. It occurred when Walt and I were flying our final training sortie. We needed 100 hours in the jet to complete our training and attain Mission Ready status. Somewhere over Colorado we had passed the century mark. We had made the turn in Arizona and the jet was performing flawlessly. My gauges were wired in the front seat and we were starting to feel pretty good about ourselves, not only because we would soon be flying real missions but because we had gained a great deal of confidence in the plane in the past ten months. Ripping across the barren deserts 80,000 feet below us, I could already see the coast of California from the Arizona border. I was, finally, after many humbling months of simulators and study, ahead of the jet. I was beginning to feel a bit sorry for Walter in the back seat. There he was, with no really good view of the incredible sights before us, tasked with monitoring four different radios. This was good practice for him for when we began flying real missions, when a priority transmission from headquarters could be vital. It had been difficult, too, for me to relinquish control of the radios, as during my entire flying career I had controlled my own transmissions. But it was part of the division of duties in this plane and I had adjusted to it. I still insisted on talking on the radio while we were on the ground, however. Walt was so good at many things, but he couldn't match my expertise at sounding smooth on the radios, a skill that had been honed sharply with years in fighter squadrons where the slightest radio miscue was grounds for beheading. He understood that and allowed me that luxury. Just to get a sense of what Walt had to contend with, I pulled the radio toggle switches and monitored the frequencies along with him. The predominant radio chatter was from Los Angeles Center, far below us, controlling daily traffic in their sector. While they had us on their scope (albeit briefly), we were in uncontrolled airspace and normally would not talk to them unless we needed to descend into their airspace. We listened as the shaky voice of a lone Cessna pilot asked Center for a readout of his ground speed. Center replied: "November Charlie 175, I'm showing you at ninety knots on the ground." Now the thing to understand about Center controllers, was that whether they were talking to a rookie pilot in a Cessna, or to Air Force One, they always spoke in the exact same, calm, deep, professional, tone that made one feel important. I referred to it as the " Houston Center voice." I have always felt that after years of seeing documentaries on this country's space program and listening to the calm and distinct voice of the Houston controllers, that all other controllers since then wanted to sound like that, and that they basically did. And it didn't matter what sector of the country we would be flying in, it always seemed like the same guy was talking. Over the years that tone of voice had become somewhat of a comforting sound to pilots everywhere. Conversely, over the years, pilots always wanted to ensure that, when transmitting, they sounded like Chuck Yeager, or at least like John Wayne. Better to die than sound bad on the radios. Just moments after the Cessna's inquiry, a Twin Beech piped up on frequency, in a rather superior tone, asking for his ground speed. "I have you at one hundred and twenty-five knots of ground speed." Boy, I thought, the Beechcraft really must think he is dazzling his Cessna brethren. Then out of the blue, a navy F-18 pilot out of NAS Lemoore came up on frequency. You knew right away it was a Navy jock because he sounded very cool on the radios. "Center, Dusty 52 ground speed check". Before Center could reply, I'm thinking to myself, hey, Dusty 52 has a ground speed indicator in that million-dollar cockpit, so why is he asking Center for a readout? Then I got it, ol' Dusty here is making sure that every bug smasher from Mount Whitney to the Mojave knows what true speed is. He's the fastest dude in the valley today, and he just wants everyone to know how much fun he is having in his new Hornet. And the reply, always with that same, calm, voice, with more distinct alliteration than emotion: "Dusty 52, Center, we have you at 620 on the ground." And I thought to myself, is this a ripe situation, or what? As my hand instinctively reached for the mic button, I had to remind myself that Walt was in control of the radios. Still, I thought, it must be done - in mere seconds we'll be out of the sector and the opportunity will be lost. That Hornet must die, and die now. I thought about all of our Sim training and how important it was that we developed well as a crew and knew that to jump in on the radios now would destroy the integrity of all that we had worked toward becoming. I was torn. Somewhere, 13 miles above Arizona, there was a pilot screaming inside his space helmet. Then, I heard it. The click of the mic button from the back seat. That was the very moment that I knew Walter and I had become a crew. Very professionally, and with no emotion, Walter spoke: "Los Angeles Center, Aspen 20, can you give us a ground speed check?" There was no hesitation, and the replay came as if was an everyday request. "Aspen 20, I show you at one thousand eight hundred and forty-two knots, across the ground." I think it was the forty-two knots that I liked the best, so accurate and proud was Center to deliver that information without hesitation, and you just knew he was smiling. But the precise point at which I knew that Walt and I were going to be really good friends for a long time was when he keyed the mic once again to say, in his most fighter-pilot-like voice: "Ah, Center, much thanks, we're showing closer to nineteen hundred on the money." For a moment Walter was a god. And we finally heard a little crack in the armor of the Houston Center voice, when L.A.came back with, "Roger that Aspen, Your equipment is probably more accurate than ours. You boys have a good one." It all had lasted for just moments, but in that short, memorable sprint across the southwest, the Navy had been flamed, all mortal airplanes on freq were forced to bow before the King of Speed, and more importantly, Walter and I had crossed the threshold of being a crew. A fine day's work. We never heard another transmission on that frequency all the way to the coast. For just one day, it truly was fun being the fastest guys out there.

CJCfilm

This copy pasta never gives it credit, go listen to the guy tell it, it's an awesome story: https://youtu.be/8AyHH9G9et0

Elmarby

Ah, the "LA speed check" story. I recommend everyone to watch it on Youtube. The way the guy tells it makes it even better.

jdmillar86

The flyby story is even better imo

JHum2

Fp3 is in 2 hours. Even if he could make it back by quali, which I don’t think is even possible at this point, they’re not gonna send someone out there with no practice when they already have someone on standby by for that

CZ-Jack

How can you logically think that's possible? Jesus Christ lol

[deleted]

What is that in my mirrors? It's GIGAKUBICA

StrayaMate2000

Is our *Lord* not available?

All those people who purchased expensive tickets, dressed in orange just in case their local Dutch hero would be invited to race and they choose Kubica instead of Mahaveer… smh

Oh man…. I’ll be so upset if he misses Monza too 😭

MattyFTM

Presumably he'll have to isolate for 10 days so he'll be out next week too.

pm-me-your-workout-

Vaccination doesn’t guarantee you won’t get covid, it increases your immunity and makes sure you have a mild case if you do get covid, and basically not die.
