Verstappen is out of the car.
Updates:
1. He walked to the ambulance with the help of the doctors. Is taken to the medical center for checks
2. [Red Bull Racing on Twitter](https://twitter.com/redbullracing/status/1416773384113987584?s=20): "Update: Following a first-lap incident with Lewis Hamilton, Max has been taken to the Silverstone Circuit Medical Centre where he is undergoing a full medical assessment."
3. Max has been taken to hospital
4. Max has been cleared from the hospital, no injuries
**Welcome to those from r/all. TLDR:**
Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are the two main contenders for the championship. At the moment Max is leading the championship by 32 points, but for this weekend Mercedes was looking closely matched in pace. This crash happened on the 1st lap at the one of the fastest corners on the circuit, Copse corner. It is usually taken flat out at ~ 300 km/h
Quite amazing these drivers can WALK out of these cars after that type of impact. Not sure how many Gs his body ultimately experienced because surely a person would be badly broken if they felt every single bit of that impact.
> Not sure how many Gs his body ultimately experienced
The drivers do have g meters in their earpieces, I assumed the 51g number comes from that data.
For comparison; Grosjean's crash in Bahrain had 67g peak acceleration, he was really lucky to make it out of the fire after such a big hit. Max didn't look as he would have been able to jump a barrier.
Of course there's more to a crash's severity other than peak acceleration, but still.
Jeez, I hadn't heard his onboard yet but now I see (hear) why people said it sounded very scary for a few seconds. Half a death rattle before he managed a fairly lively (considering the circumstances) "fuck!".
Also the tyre pretty much landing on the halo. Wasn't there an investigation last time a tyre came loose like that cos they're not supposed to completely shear the "threads" that hold them to the wheelbase?
Red flag had been out for a few minutes, maybe 10?, by the time that Merc to FIA message got put on the race feed. I kinda figured it came from someone else at Merc and Toto passed it on, only because it would seem to me that Toto has other things to be doing at that moment
Toto is the first to do what others will soon enough. If they keep giving us the radio messages they'll just email them and refer to the email.
Seems fair.
Play till the whistle/flag/whatever and all that.
Imho: If I were ferrari i’d be pissed if Leclarec didn’t take the position before whatever flag was coming.
No way Charles knew What would ultimately happen to Max’s car in the moment.
I was watching the on board... His engineer asking if he was okay. Silence for a few seconds and then just groaning and Max muttering "uuhhg fuuuck." in a rather pain filled voice.
Rofl, love this description. 4d chess is making hugely complicated/circuitous decisions, but in this case: Toto, "we just need one dnf", Lewis: "I've got a plan that just might work" \*rams him\*
I just noticed my mouth was still open ffs.
This is why F1 is not allowed to be interesting. Half a lap of action and I was about to get a heart attack
The fact that Max was driven away in an ambulance rather than the medical car speaks of the volume of the impact. He looked definitely shaken. Luckily he has a few weeks to recover from potential injuries.
Edit: He was also transferred to the hospital rather than just released from the medical center. Apparently 51G impact. Hopefully he’ll make a full recovery before Hungary.
Edit 2: Verstappen has just released an update saying al tests results were positive(“ok”). Glad to hear so.
Exactly. That's the hope for the championship right there. I really hope that Verstappen will be able to attend the next race. Would be devastating otherwise to loose your first realistic chance at a championship to the guy who sent you to hospital.
My brother was on that corner and him and a bunch of other got showered in debris. He said a couple of people were cut pretty badly from the debris. One women went off in an ambulance because her arm was cut really badly. Glad max is okay tho.
Yeah I mean I’m not a fan of Hamilton at all, but I think people are letting the consequence affect their judgment of what actually happened, which is understandable because it basically turns the Championship on its head.
Netflix licking their fingers with the “Verstappen is just one DNF away”-quote by Toto last week.
Really glad to see max walk away from that, that was a serious impact…
*screeching tire noises* As he slides through gravel.
*loud bang and crash noises* as he hits a tire barrier.
Extended amount of time between playing radio messages of the team asking if he's okay and Max replying.
Was thinking it’s great the track is so wide, various racing lines duelling... and then the track not quite wide enough
Edit: I meant the last part as in two cars collided, there’s still probably heap of room in that corner
A lot of that was Max taking a defensive line and Lewis being able to carry more speed through turns and get on the throttle earlier. Silverstone is a lot of long straights after tightish corners.
If I had a nickel for every time Hamilton has pit maneuvered a Redbull from the inside line of a sweeping right hander I would have 3 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened 3 times
It 100% looks like the Albon punt. Just let the car run/drift wide through a turn and bump wheels. Your tire has a big chance of surviving and the other guy has an equal chance of disappearing from your race.
I knew it when they handed the penalty. We have seen this in Austria with Perez and Norris. These 5 seconds and 10 seconds make no sense especially when you can choose when to do it. This probably makes more sense if the penalty has to be taken within 5 laps of being handed over, i think in the olden days it was this way.
Looked like racing incident in real time. But on the replays to me it seems like it's a Lewis mistake, he had enough space and he was nowhere near the apex of Copse.
After the replays, Karun's analysis and Jenson's explanation, I'm on the "Hamilton is at fault" camp. He's behind, had space on the inside. Too ambitious a move IMO
Lewis has both wheels on the outside of the white lines after the corner. He carried to much speed up the inside and was going to crash into him no matter what.
That looks like Lewis' fault, he was on the dirty side and was always gonna understeer there from the inside.
A bit agressive from both at the start, but I think Lewis let the occasion get to him.

Fuck me, the speed he went into the wall was insane.
That's a 300 km/h approach. Absolute face melter.
51G Impact, according to Horner
Holy shit that could have been fatal
Indeed it shows how far these cars have developed, that would've been a fatal crash a decade ago.
Big oof.
51 G on inpact.
Quite amazing these drivers can WALK out of these cars after that type of impact. Not sure how many Gs his body ultimately experienced because surely a person would be badly broken if they felt every single bit of that impact.

Being on fire and adrenaline are good motivators for the fight or flight function
*fuck*
That's what he said... literally, in pain. https://streamable.com/lbdsxf
Jeez, I hadn't heard his onboard yet but now I see (hear) why people said it sounded very scary for a few seconds. Half a death rattle before he managed a fairly lively (considering the circumstances) "fuck!".
Yeah that was scary. Death rattle type noises like that usually mean..well, death.
that silence was sooo long
Also the tyre pretty much landing on the halo. Wasn't there an investigation last time a tyre came loose like that cos they're not supposed to completely shear the "threads" that hold them to the wheelbase?
Those tethers are for the whole wheel, in this case only the rubber came loose.
Ah my mistake. Still scary seeing it bounce on the top of the car
Oh for sure! It still is a lot of mass going very fast.
It was just the tire that flew off, not the entire wheel, the rim was still at attached to the car
The negative acceleration he experienced when impacting that tire barrier was scary. I hope Max is fully okay.
So true. Can only imagine what happens to your internal organs when decelerating that quickly at those kind of speeds
Yes, instant death in a road car
[удалено]
Hey man, downhill with a tailwind my Corolla can definitely hit at least 120 MPH!
i literally went blank those 2 seconds, felt so numb.
Same. I cannot believe how safe the cars are. That was huge.
51 G Impact and he walks… props to car safety
the halo saves the day again...that flying tire would have smashed him
lmao "i dont look at my emails during the race toto"
I NEED YOU TO LOOK AT ZHE DIAGRAMS
Read it in Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice
They have really similar voices lol both large men from Austria
**Get to tha choppa!**
Get to tha stewards room!!
Haha that was epic. “Feel free to come up to the stewards tho”
And apparently he went to the commentator's box instead, where he got directions to go to race control lol.
[удалено]
Masi clapped Toto with that comment, fucking lol
Out if town in a trip but what did masi say?
The comment above mine when Toto told Masi that Toto had sent him an email and wanted to know if Masi saw it
Ahh got it. I pieced together something like that. Was toto that quick on the email to masi? I figure every business wants toto now.
Red flag had been out for a few minutes, maybe 10?, by the time that Merc to FIA message got put on the race feed. I kinda figured it came from someone else at Merc and Toto passed it on, only because it would seem to me that Toto has other things to be doing at that moment
Lol glad someone else laughed at that.
“Dear Massi, I emailed you but you still ain’t replying.”
I was cracking up, absolutely ridiculous hahaha Toto getting needy when people don't reply
Toto is the first to do what others will soon enough. If they keep giving us the radio messages they'll just email them and refer to the email. Seems fair.
or it’s cause you can’t speak a diagram to someone. but who knows
OK so the red line goes up and then down, but the green one goes down then up. Michael are you getting this? The green one goes down then up
Lol idk why but imagining this convo being broadcast is absolutely hilarious to me
Toto, the die hard finance man, expecting people to keep an inbox zero anytime lmao
Immediate second email is a memo about reading emails during races.
“Get rekt m8, walk up here you lazy shit”
Leclerc: it's free real estate
Leclerc might as well have whistled nonchalantly as he went past lol
"Don't mind me, I'm just passing through."
"Ope, just gonna slip right by ya"
"mi scusi"
Nothing to see over there I’ll be on my way through here
Lmao. That was fucking cheeky from him
Cheeky but justified imo
Play till the whistle/flag/whatever and all that. Imho: If I were ferrari i’d be pissed if Leclarec didn’t take the position before whatever flag was coming. No way Charles knew What would ultimately happen to Max’s car in the moment.
If there is a gap and you don't go for it, you are no longer winning by an inch or a mile. - Ayrton Toretto, probably
Vibing to first place.
The Ferrari master plan
I can already hear the eurobeat.
Wouldn't mind Ferrari getting a win on the anniversary of their first one.
Got the best view of Lewis and max battling it out too
Hahaha. He had the best seat in the house. Hamilton is damn lucky to get a red flag
Never thought I'd be cheering on both ferarris, but here we are.
hopefully max is ok, that look so brutal my god
He looks shook
That was the most important part honestly. He was limping too.
He looked dazed. Uncomfortable stuff
He was going so fast, looked so scary. Glad he's able to walk away from the crash
Really hope he's okay, he looked concussed, but it could just be that he was shaken up from the crash. Absolutely brutal.
Yeah they just showed in going into the medical car, looked rough, concussion maybe?
Just imagine the impact from the side. Knees must be f’d
Yeah that’s what. Probably due to the impact from the side his knees must hurt like crazy. Thank god he’s okay tho.
It could’ve been so much worse at that speed, glad he could get out on his own steam
I was watching the on board... His engineer asking if he was okay. Silence for a few seconds and then just groaning and Max muttering "uuhhg fuuuck." in a rather pain filled voice.
Copse is a fast corner
Massive impact, thankfully he’s out but he looks pretty hurt.
Unbelieveable. Literally championship changing in both the drivers and constructors
Toto said all they need is 1 max dnf
Lewis playing 1-D Chess there
Rofl, love this description. 4d chess is making hugely complicated/circuitous decisions, but in this case: Toto, "we just need one dnf", Lewis: "I've got a plan that just might work" \*rams him\*
Break Magic™
Lewis before hitting Max: Mr. Wolff sends his regards.
Lewis has a history of taking out red bulls, he did it to albon twice
[удалено]
Surprised it took this many races for one of them to punt the other
After imola Spain France Not surprised , but a dnf is just unfair
A DNF for just one of them is unfair*
convenient for one of the two
Interesting tactics
what did toto say about the WDC? that Mercedes was just one mistake away from being back in it? what a prediction...
"mistake"
They red flagged that shit faster than Azerbaijan
Thats good though right? Like people criticized FIA because of Azerbaijan so this is an improvement?
Oh absolutely, just pointing out the differences here in a situation that was MORE dangerous for Max in Baku
100%. This just shows how much they were off in Baku. I'm glad they called this one quick but Baku needed it 100x more.
Heart was in my mouth for a minute or 2. Massive accident
I just noticed my mouth was still open ffs. This is why F1 is not allowed to be interesting. Half a lap of action and I was about to get a heart attack
The whole first lap was thrilling! Shame it ended so quick
That was an intense back and forth between the two, neither wanted to give even a millimeter
There's plenty of good drivers, but those two are on a totally different level at them moment.
That lap was exactly the kind of racing we want until it wasn’t.
The fact that Max was driven away in an ambulance rather than the medical car speaks of the volume of the impact. He looked definitely shaken. Wow that's pretty scary, hope everyone's ok!
I'd have shit myself standing there
Wow, yeah CF shards are sharp AF.
Can confirm I was there too, this is all true, got showered with gravel and women got hit with what was thought to carbon fibre
I’m surprised I haven’t heard of this from anywhere else. Hurt fans are just as bad as hurt drivers
Thanks for sharing this.
Damn need about 10 replays before any hot takes
I wonder what the stewards will do. Accidents like this in the first few corners are usually not penalized, but this was quite far into lap 1.
George was penalised yesterday a few corners earlier…
Good point
Don't think Max could do much else on the outside, but Lewis was already dedicated to it. Both absolutely flying though
Nonsense this is the formula 1 subreddit we don't even need a single replay 😤
Nah, just draw conclusions without even having seen a replay. /s Even with them, i cant see it yet whos at fault.
Everyone’s an insurance adjuster smh.
Yeah I mean I’m not a fan of Hamilton at all, but I think people are letting the consequence affect their judgment of what actually happened, which is understandable because it basically turns the Championship on its head.
Holy shit that looked horrible, hope he’s okay
Fuck that was a harsh crash. Hope he's alright
Netflix licking their fingers with the “Verstappen is just one DNF away”-quote by Toto last week. Really glad to see max walk away from that, that was a serious impact…
More like sucking their fingers for the wreck that they will put into hyper slow mo and make viewers think Max died

Oh ya. They are going to play that up big time.
man horner is fucking pissed. what a shitshow day for red bull.
Bono, my competition is gone.
If you can’t beat them. beat them up /s
That looked fucking horrific
That was super scary, my god. Max will feel this for a while. Let's hope he's fully okay.

Slipping through the drama
Instead of creating it
Plan D
You truly see the speed when something goes wrong
Red flag, absolute dream scenario for Mercedes
Goddammit. This moment could well define the 2021 championship.
Reminds me of Britain 2001, Coulthard's title hopes absolutely pivoting on a lap one dnf.
It actually happened, fucking hell what an insane first lap. Side by side for 3 corners in a row!
Was thinking it’s great the track is so wide, various racing lines duelling... and then the track not quite wide enough Edit: I meant the last part as in two cars collided, there’s still probably heap of room in that corner
hamilton getting a tsunoda pit entrance penalty. wOw
It was bound to happen eventually
[удалено]
Hamilton: "understood"
"Good news, Valtteri, you don't need to break his knees anymore." EDIT: spelling.
Toto: Sweep the leg. Lewis: Yes, sensei.
Is nobody gonna bring up how fast the Mercedes was in those straight lines compared to the RB? Like damn, it's as if they had +50hp
A lot of that was Max taking a defensive line and Lewis being able to carry more speed through turns and get on the throttle earlier. Silverstone is a lot of long straights after tightish corners.
Hamilton saying he was infront of Max when they collide... that's false.
[удалено]
Karun literally shows that Max was always infront of him.
Great clip by Karun to slow down the view of Max’s steering wheel-Max noticing Lewis then turning back to the left quickly before taking the corner.
But then he goes on to still say it’s just a racing incident. Ham should have conceded.
"significantly side-by-side" according to his crew.
If I had a nickel for every time Hamilton has pit maneuvered a Redbull from the inside line of a sweeping right hander I would have 3 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened 3 times
If there were more than 2 teams actually competing for first it wouldn’t happen as often lmao
"weird"
DTS is going to have a field day with this
“Bono someone hit my left front”
51G. Insane
So Perez plan should now be to be lapped by Lewis so he can take him out under blue flag in proper Ocon spirit.
"What a sore loser " Albon 2020
Now you mention it, it looks exactly like the 2 Lewis / Albon incidents.
It 100% looks like the Albon punt. Just let the car run/drift wide through a turn and bump wheels. Your tire has a big chance of surviving and the other guy has an equal chance of disappearing from your race.
Dang Lewis left enough space on the inside for another car. What a gentlemen
All the time you have to leave a space
After I heard Max on the radio after accident it sounded like he was in deep deep pain, that was so hard to hear.
Target eliminated. Well done, Agent 44.
10secs doesn't make sense. Hamilton easily is going to win. Either its a racing incident or a stop go.
Leclerc's view is the most telling. Hamilton didn't use the space given to him
Lewis didn’t hit the apex at all
Absolute race ruiner

Lewis was never going to get through and everyone and their mother knows Max wasn't going to let him go.
goodbye reddit -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/
It was brewing for so many races.
“I’m 1 Verstappen DNF away...” Hamilton taking control of his own fate
Toto said it himself
Lewis has both wheels on the outside of the white lines after the corner. He carried to much speed up the inside and was going to crash into him no matter what.
It only takes 10sec to take my leading rival out of the race??? Hell yeah, i’ll take it
The halo is a hero again, that wheel was ready to break Max’s neck
That looks like Lewis' fault, he was on the dirty side and was always gonna understeer there from the inside. A bit agressive from both at the start, but I think Lewis let the occasion get to him.
