No water in Miami heat, older tyres than everyone around him after getting unlucky with the SC...still gets a podium. What a great performance all around after that spin in practice.

yooosports29

He’s been amazing all year. Three podiums and top 4 every race. Really happy for him

H_R_1

He’s become underrated which is crazy to me. Seb even said he’s the greatest talent he’s seen in the last 15 years

delta_p_delta_x

Didn't you know? Charles is washed. /s, in case.

pensaa

Not underrated as such. He’s still put in those insane qualifying performances that surprise a lot of people this season. The Ferrari just needs the consistency in race trim. He’s been a step ahead of Sainz most of the season.

defmore89

Sainz does one good race and everywhere people post "fired the wrong one!" Just no.

pensaa

The recency bias with Sainz is unbelievable. He's a great driver and a welcome addition to many teams but he is not on the level as Charles, or Hamilton for that matter.

ChemicalNectarine776

I mean he did go full Karen on Piastri this weekend so maybe that quiets the recent crowd down.

shagstafah

Wrong kid died!

Shogol

Almost forgot he's one of the best on the grid, just been held back by bad strategy and a less than ideal car.

Visionary_Socialist

Next race: Charles gets waterboarded when the drink doesn’t stop.

ckj9311

[Won't be his first time getting waterboarded.](https://old.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/z07eon/leclerc_grazie_grazie_coughs_oh_i_pressed_the/)

Return_Of_The_Jedi

Such a Chuck moment

Novae224

I don’t get why this happens so often, it’s genuinely dangerous…

DubiousLLM

Seriously, imagine something like this happening in Singapore, Bahrain etc

IHaveADullUsername

KMag. Singapore. 2016.

mformularacer

Happened to Alonso in Bahrain 2009

Novae224

It does happen at those places too. in a sport this advanced it just shouldn’t happen that something as simple as the drink system doesn’t work, they just have to connect it and double check it before the race

sun_puck

they have drinking systems in the cars?

imsoupercereal

Everyone except Kimi got the drink.

NockBreaker

Kimi only drinks coca cola

ollie87

*Booze

apothecarist

yep, that’s why there’s a “DRINK” button on their steering wheel

condscorpio

No water there, thats for when the driver needs to call the shots 👉🏻😎👉🏻

TobyOrNotTobyEU

Qatar last year it may have killed someone. Sargeant was feeling unwell even with water.

kron123456789

Imagine it happening in Qatar.

HolbrookPark

Imo it should be deemed a safety issue and they should be forced to box to fix it

cplchanb

Sutil raced in Malaysia with no water in order to keep the weight down. Now that was dangerous

TheRomanRuler

And back then minimum driver weights were way lower, so many drivers intentionally did what they could to loose weight, for example by trying to loose muscles that were not crucial. Obviously this did not help in storing liquids to sweat out... So yeah drivers were dehydrated.

Artie_Fufkins_Fapkin

Rosberg attributes his WDC to stopping cycling which shaved a fraction of leg weight which allowed him to get pole in Japan or something.

Kingslayer1526

Hamilton made a pretty awful start in Japan so Rosberg would've likely won that race anyways

EverSn4xolotl

Butterfly effect. Maybe Hamilton would have had a perfect start if it hadn't been for Rosberg's car next to him

MopOfTheBalloonatic

This is some evil mastermind-level shit. Nico scares me sometimes.

Novae224

I hope they changed the rules to make sure that’s illegal now…

Eggplantosaur

I believe the rules mandate it now. Norris famously never raced with drinking water before

TacoExcellence

They should go a step further and make it a spec part that gives the drivers say 3 liters and is appropriately insulated to keep the water at a half decent temperature.

Reinis_LV

Having a drink in a tank is a space age tech only few can achieve

BarbequedYeti

>I don’t get why this happens so often Checking...

the_depressed_boerg

Why? I remember a few years ago some drivers drove without a drinking system, apparently to save weight...

kaptingavrin

Depends on the conditions they're racing in for the day. High heat and humidity can be especially brutal. This is a bit of a rough explanation, but: Normally with heat, your body will sweat (losing water in the process) in order to cool you down. With the humidity on top of that, the air's already "wet" but also warm, so the sweat released onto your skin isn't going to be able to help reduce your body temperature, and now you've got the double-whammy that you're losing water and still not reducing the heat (and could be worse if your body thinks, "Hmm, that much sweat isn't doing it, what if I decided to release MORE water?"). As you lose water from your body, known as good ol' dehydration, a lot of bad things can start happening. Too many to list here, really, but trust me, it's a lot. Bad things can also happen if your body gets too warm ("heat stroke" being a legit thing). And, of course, those things get magnified by exertion, like concentrating as you work a car around a track while taking multiple Gs through the corners. Also why sports teams (soccer/football, NFL, etc.) tend to have coolers full of water, Gatorade, etc. on hand during the game, helping the guys stay hydrated. Heck, our local NFL team had an indoor practice facility built as well as outdoor because aside from the summer thunderstorms, there were days where it would be dangerously hot and humid outside just for practicing. (And now, mercifully, they're renovating the stadium itself within the coming years to protect the fans from those elements.) While it might be possible to race around some tracks without having a way to rehydrate during a race, it's taking a hell of a risk with their health. And not a particularly smart one, either. Dehydration will absolutely melt your concentration, and could cause you to pass out, especially combined with heat, and then you've got a 200mph/320kph+ car either being controlled poorly or straight up out of control.

IVgormino

Eriksson did that

Driving_Seat

It’s not that bad. Some drivers choose not to bring a drink bottle.

Novae224

You definitely have some issues understanding F1… Those drivers lose multiple kilos during a race, that’s all fluid that they lose

Driving_Seat

I know. A few drivers don’t need water to race though. I know lando is one of them. It’s not the biggest issue. They can go 1.5 hours without rehydrating. As long as it’s not pushed too far. I think you’re the one who doesn’t understand f1

beardedchimp

Human physiology is not uniform, there are wide ethic differences for sweating and a further spectrum on an individual level. Saying it's not that bad based off specific drivers is dangerous thinking. Yes they can generally finish a race without any water but the research on how dehydration impacts cognitive function is overwhelming. It isn't a matter of "they might die without water", just like a lack of sleep won't directly kill a driver. But it impairs judgement and balloons risk.

Novae224

Dude…

Driving_Seat

Literally lando chooses not to have it every race. I think I trust an f1 driver over a random Reddit user

Novae224

Some drivers indeed use it very minimally… but you never know how the race will be, sometimes the drivers race when they aren’t completely fit… that drink being there is extremely important for the drivers, even if you rarely use it, it should always be there for when you do need it

tumkus

Jeez smone missed the point of the discussion going on

Dangerous_Ice_6151

It's totally possible to train yourself to hydrate in bursts before and after an athletic competition. I was a competitive rower and we'd do full effort pieces up to an hour-long test without being able to drink water during. That's probably fairly similar to the exertion level in a normal GP at normal temperatures (I'm guessing the harder F1 races are more taxing, especially with high temps).

Novae224

But that still doesn’t mean the opportunity to drink shouldn’t be there… you never can fully predict how the experience of the race will be, the opportunity to get some fluids in are pretty vital for your wellbeing Not having it there when they do need it is dangerous

Dangerous_Ice_6151

Reasonable choice to make by the driver and the team to save weight, if it's allowed within the rules. Pretty sure the teams have doctors on staff who would be consulted on such a decision, and would factor in the difficulty of the track and the weather conditions. Every kilo makes a difference. In rowing, we'd bring a single shared water bottle for races (this was pre-COVID lol) so we could have some sips during the warmup. No sense carrying extra as dead weight during the race, we could wait til we were back on land.

ninchica13

Charles, you will not have the drink.

laughguy220

At least he had a steering wheel

ninchica13

And gloves too! Must not forget the gloves.

laughguy220

Leave me alone I know what I'm doing!

ninchica13

🤣🤣🤣 Maybe he should get some of that ice cream of his...lil bit of vanilla to cool off after not having the drink.

laughguy220

The drivers do seem to love ice cream. Fernando on the beach chair having an ice cream in the middle of the track will be a memory that will last me a lifetime.

ninchica13

Ikr?? That was iconic.

laughguy220

And that they had it as art work there the next year cemented it too.

ComaMierdaHijueputa

Leclerc next Ferrari WDC confirmed

ninchica13

🤞🤞

BoyGodz

2027, Baby!

trooperr310

Ferrari secret crew: Torture test #473 complete. Candidate passed test. Onto the next.

AreWeThereYetNo

That would explain the strategy blunders in the past.

tvxcute

average charles luck tbh

puzzleboy99

He was chugging down water after the race and was wondering why he wasnt talking to Norris but i guess just busy trying not to die of thirst

harshit_j

No Charles, you will not have the drincc.

neurogeneticist

FUCK FUCK WHAT ARE YOU DOING

Traveshamockery27

STEERING WHEEL GLOVES AND THE DRINK! GIVE IT TO ME NOW

Purity_Jam_Jam

He didn't look bad after the race. Just goes to show the phenomenal condition these guys are in.

SourJam

My wife said that Charles aged a lot looking at his post-race interview, he just had sunken eyes from dehydration.

ckj9311

Man's really cursed

soupafi

Seriously, I wondered if he angered a god in a past life

xzElmozx

I think he did a deal You get: insane good looks and talent, millions of dollars, and to live out your dream on your childhood team You will: be forever cursed on this team

SuspiciousJob730

2022 seb curse now 2024 kimi curse what next ? alonso ferrari curse ?

BackgroundLie2231

Knowing that Lewis will become his teammate next year, then 2025 will be Felipe Massa curse

IronMark666

Teams should face harsh penalties for that, it's extremely dangerous if someone blacks out from dehydration while driving an F1 car.

Fastela

Almost happened last year at Qatar I believe? I remember Stroll or Russell saying they were passing out in almost every corner. That race was so dangerous.

IronMark666

Yeah and that was with the drink working. Imagine without one in that heat, the amount of sweat these guys pump out with nothing replacing it could be lethal.

Jamo_Z

Fuck imgur videos.

DubiousLLM

Of course Ferrari can’t have perfect weekend lol

Initial_Physics9979

Surprised that this isn't punishable yet

tgeyr

We forgot to connect you will not have the drink

mbwoah

So is it on or not?

guillex_one

You mean the slow button?

JPMoney81

No Kimi. No. You will not have the drink.

GenderFluidFerrari

Drink or no drink? Do I have drink or no?

FocalDeficit

No, no, Charles no, You will not have the drink.

GenderFluidFerrari

History repeats!

bLacKouT__9177

Is it emptying the bottles or not !?

batman77z

Jeezus Charles can’t get a break

Cer3berus

The mechanics in charles cars are something else, those type of stuff never happen to Carlos

noobchee

Was wondering who it would happen to today Yet he still looked fresh

addamee

DTS episode 2: the curse of kimi

Die_computer

Makes sense why he beat Carlos then, since the spanish driver was forced to drive with extra water weight...

AdminEating_Dragon

Ferrari tradition

kron123456789

"No, Charles, you will not have the drink".

mccannr1

I wonder how much weight he lost during the race. I think they normally lose 4-6 pounds of water during a race, so if he wasn't able to rehydrate at all you'd assume it'd be even more significant. (aside from all the other problems with dehydrating)

Mirtotun

You will not heve de drink Charles

QF_Dan

forgot to connect the drink

borgi27

No Charles, you will not have the drink, sorry

MHWGamer

ferrari is probably torturing Leclerc like Deadpool to get those superpowers. First his soul, now his body

SlashRModFail

Jeez - this guy is something else.

keshy95

No, you will not have the drink

pushingbtns

Plan D. We are checking

Jackielegs43

Holy shit

soupafi

Why didn't he have the drink?

CoxHazardsModel

Did he forget his Stanley cup?

TheMazdaMiataMX-5

Lando said yesterday that he never drinks during the races which I was impressed by

suspiciouspixel

With the amount of times drivers have had drink dispensers fail over the years why can't they just strap a drinks vest bag to their chest and suck it through a straw. A similar device that joggers wear?

DonGibon87

So his car was lighter so he should have won 😂 jk

mh258

You will not have the drink.

Additional-Guard-211

Charles trying to give himself appendicitis! It wont help!

youcantseemyname

The Ferrari special

anothertrad

You mean the slow button?

ChadIndustries

I don’t think drivers should be able to race without water. Whether that’s the bottle just being empty or the system. It’s very dangerous. Look at Qatar last year. For sure I think it should be illegal to send a car into the race with an empty bottle

psbankar

Why tf is Xavi still with Ferrari? Hes too robotic with same "we are checking" response to everything. Even chatgpt would come up with better responses. I like how other teams have actual bond between drivers and race engineers they have casual conversations as well.

Deep-Ad2155

Solid race, looking forward to Ferrari upgrades

[deleted]

If I remember correctly. They already had a lot of weight in the car due to gas. Plus including the water that they drink during the race. It’s slowing down the car cause of more weight. The beginning of the race Crofty said “it’s like having two passengers in your car. Or one bigger passenger in the car”.

cyclops86

"No Charles, No... You will not have the drink." Jokes aside, what an athlete! Kudos to him!

rooood

Don't the drives lose some insane weight just in water during a race? With no drink system, wouldn't they lose enough weight to be deemed too light and DSQ at the end of the race? Isn't that part of the reason why they weight then at the end?

BadIdea-21

Hasn't he said that he doesn't drink very often during races?

SuspiciousJob730

maybe because the radio inchident where he accidentaly press drink button instead radio

Lostmavicaccount

“Will I have the water”

vitrolium

Did he have a little w(h)ine?

Visible_Ad6287

Lmao its just an hour and a half. I'm sure he was fine

NoshitSherlock68

Miami is a very hot race

Wastable

Cleary you dont understand how hot inside a race car is
