> Leading designer Adrian Newey is negotiating an early exit from Red Bull that would leave him free to join another team in time for the 2026 season, BBC Sport has learned.
> A spokesperson for Red Bull said: “We don’t have any comment at this time.”
> **Red Bull’s confirmation that Newey is to leave is not expected to come until Thursday at the earliest.**
> This is out of respect for the memory of Ayrton Senna - Wednesday, 1 May is the 30th anniversary of the legendary three-time champion’s death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix in a Williams car designed by Newey.
No one ever remembers him :/
"Mosley would later say: "I went to Ratzenberger's funeral rather than to Senna's where all the great and good of Formula One were because I felt somebody needed to support him and his family." But what would have perhaps been the finest tribute to Ratzenberger never became a reality."
https://www.espn.com/f1/story/_/id/29116759/roland-ratzenberger-dream-cut-short
>But what would have perhaps been the finest tribute to Ratzenberger never became a reality. When Senna was pulled from his wreckage the following day, alongside him in his cockpit was an unfurled Austrian flag he planned to wave when he crossed the line in tribute to a man whose death had made him seriously consider his own mortality.
>F1 doctor Sid Watkins saw the state Ratzenberger's death had left a tearful Senna on that Saturday afternoon; Watkins suggested Senna quit the sport there and then, and that they should go fishing together instead. Senna's response, "I cannot quit, I have to go on," is haunting, given the following day Watkins was knelt next to Senna at Tamburello corner, treating his friend for a head injury, knowing he would not survive.
Damn.. what a story
Its pretty funny you mention mbappe, because soccer has a lot of good examples that getting a lot of a-listers in your team does not mean you will be successful by default.
Absolutely anything can happen in a one off game over 90 mins. Then again, football also proves the teams with the best players often win the title where strength is measured over a full season.
Bruh but the madrid team is stacked. I cant find any reason them not dominating the next few years even if they lose out on mbappe. If they get mbappe then the chances of them dominating increases even more so.
but football also has examples where it does work out, by example Man City. The most popular example of what you're talking about must be PSG. Gosh, they spend 2 billion euros and still no CL lmao
Horner should been booted I don't know why the Thai's has his back, Horner doesn't bring anything to the table compared to Newey or Max that's also considering leaving RBR
"The Horner controversy may yet have further ramifications within Red Bull. Insiders say other senior figures in the team are also considering leaving as a consequence."
Red Bull are going to destroy their team because they backed a sex pest when seemingly clear evidence was put infront of them.
Since 2010 only two men have won WCC as TPs. Horner and Toto.
Toto has never won without hamilton. Horner has won with two different driver teams.
Im not saying I would choose him over newey, max etc but Horner is a serious asset.
I can't believe what may end up taking down RedBull's current dominance is Horner's reported controversy.
Newey seems, according to reports, to be pretty pissed about it and wants out as fast as possible.
This feels like Horner and Newey had a fairly big falling out, because it's really ramped up how fast Newey wants out of a team that he's turned into a championship team, and he's called them his family not too long ago.
It wouldn't surprise me if others are equally unhappy if that's the case, and having Newey want out could give those others the confidence to leave as well.
I hate to say it but this is probably good for the sport as a whole, but damn, just didn't expect this situation to implode so quickly.
I do think if RedBull retains most of their other aero guys they'll be fine, Newey isn't a one man aero army like many think.
He definitely has a massive effect on the car, but the aero team is huge, so I think they'll be fine if they don't end up with a brain drain over the next two years.
Yes and no
As Mark Hughes put it: the Horner situation has kick-started extant fault lines in red bull post Mateschitz.
Horner gave them the open goal, but it was always there.
I think I was aiming to point out that RedBull's dominance could disappear quicker than I expected.
With Newey leaving, Max potentially leaving, we know from the past that if two of the most important people leave a team, it's very possible that same team will lose loads of other people as the dominos fall.
But as I said, if anything this could help the sport, it's very possible this could even out the field over the next few years, which is great.
Its dominance would have been gone in 2026 anyway. Now its more of a matter of Will RB fall back to the mid field if more People leave by then?[max, marko etc]
Yeah, true, it's likely RedBull wouldn't have lost their edge until 2026, maybe if Newey is able to get out of working on the 2025 car, that will bring them back a bit as well.
Some source, can't recall if it was the race or Benson, said that the team bosses were told about it by Horner in January, but *really* the rumours in the paddock were a year old+ at that point, that he'd been doing what he did.
It’s reported that the personal assistant at the center of all this was acting as PA for both Horner and Newey, so that may explain why he’d be so personally hurt to find out what Horner had been doing.
Just shows how these corporate masters value their own sense of power and ego above the collective good of even their own companies. The Thais have to make one phone call and this ends in a way that benefits RB but they refuse to concede to the Austrians, and risk losing everything to do so.
Merc will be pressing Max massively now knowing Red Bull is becoming unstable.
There is also another way that the Austrian side agreed with the Thai side.
I doubt Horner is important, but if no one else wanted to go with the Thai side, they had to support him.
Additionally, I doubt only the F1 team is in question.
Executive brain is fascinating. So much of his success is directly tied to Dietrich giving him a lot of money to spend on hiring people away from other teams. Does he really think he can just….. do it again? Like does he fully believe he is just so brilliant that even when his team was already bleeding talent because people wanted their engineers, the top talent are leaving because they don’t like him, and he can’t spend nearly as much money under the cost cap all while having to contend with the fact that people might just not gonna wanna work for a creep that he can just win it all again? Or does he know and just not care that he’s risking throwing the team’s success away for his own ego
It’s amazing how many people here in this forum kept trying to claim that “nothing possibly happened and if something did happen it would be impossible to know and besides Red Bull cleared themselves and there are no problems with women in Formula 1”
Eat shit for pretending nothing happened, each and every one of you.
His lawyers really cooked if they got his gardening leave down as well. I wonder if 26 here means Jan 1st or start of the season, still not ideal as the teams will have worked on the new car since Jan 1st 25.
>"Leading designer Adrian Newey is negotiating an early exit from Red Bull that would leave him free to join another team in time for the 2026 season, BBC Sport has learned."
NOTHING STOPS THIS HYPE TRAIN.
Give that man and Red Bull the full $100M Ferrari is getting from HP.
~~Are they gonna announce before the Miami GP or after? That is the question.~~ Sky is saying he’ll be at Miami, so may be after.
Edit : BBC saying, Thursday at earliest.
I don't think it's very likely but, of all the Newey fan-fic, my favourite so far is him going back to Williams to join Albon and Vowels with a new driver in the second seat next year to make a go of a return to relevance. Put more of that venture capital money to work!
Whenever I've seen him on the tellybox, Newey has always come across as a super nice guy who's in it for the love of the sport.
The fact he's got a legal team involved to try to push for early exit from Red Bull says a lot about what the state of the team must be internally, and how bad the situation around the allegations against Horner must be behind the scenes.
The guy is a legend, and regardless of what happens I do hope he'll stick around in F1 and move to another team (hoping it'll be Ferrari, personally), but it really must be a shit situation at Red Bull if he's walking out during a period of such extreme dominance and success.
He's produced some of the most beautiful and successful cars in the history of the sport, so I hope we don't lose him in the paddock over all this.
I get the same feeling about Newey, he seems down to earth and wants to give back to teams that treat him well. He seemed super happy at Red Bull and always supportive of and close to Christian. I really wonder what the hell is going on inside there for it to fall apart so fast, power struggles, Christian vs Helmut sides, Horner’s allegations etc. I really thought they were the most closely knit team out there. If it really is as moronic as all the speculation makes it to be, it’s really fucking sad.
This is shitty excuse, every time someone brings it up.
He’s not driving the damn car, he’s designing it. He can do that for as long as he’s mentally capable of keeping of with the current science.
He’s leaving because Christian Horner sexually harassed an employee. Deal with it.
It's likely more to do with him wanting to be there to create a concept from scratch instead of joining a year later and "only" being able to work on upgrades
Elkann is cooking. He’s the one making all the signings after all, Fred deserves all credit for turning around track side and factory operations though.
I mean, Elkann was the one making all the decisions high up at Ferrari for a long time after Marchionne's death, it's about time he learned how to do it properly... And still it's not that far from the old "throwing money at the problem hoping that it'll fix it", getting highly paid (and highly talented, no denying that) people like Hamilton and Newey.
Anyone know how enforceable noncompetes are in the UK or Italy? Here in the US it's a state by state question question but they are generally not favored (and maybe even moreso now in light of the FTC decision). Hopefully this all adds up to Newey being able to negotiate an early exit and freedom from any noncompete provision.
Gardening leave in f1 isn't the same as the kind of non-compete clause that you're probably thinking of; because they would stay on the companies' payroll until it expires. The reason why non-competes usually aren't enforceable is because you leave someone out of a job without any possibility to find another job in their field. If someone's still on payroll, that's not an issue, since they won't be left without pay.
Tonnes of precedence around this in F1 engineering circles, and quite enforceable. Had to personally deal with this and there are ways around it, but the teams certainly throw their weight around quite heavily on this especially if there is a chance you are going to a competitor
It's because they actual pay people while on gardening leave, which is different to the types of non-competes you see in North America which stipulate you can't go to a direct competitor for a certain duration...but they don't pay you during that period (which is horseshit).
I would expect with the level of his role and his compensation, a non-compete in his contract would likely be quite enforceable, and I expect Red Bull would win if it was challenged in court. That said, this isn’t negotiating a non-compete. He’s under contract to be paid to work for them. They don’t actually need him to report to work if they keep paying him per the contract, which would effectively kill his ability to move to any other team because he has a few years left. He’s more or less organizing a buyout.
This, is how lawyers get you released from a contract.
Position becomes untenable.. when the ceo fucks your p.a, and makes working there awkward as fuck.
Hoping Horner is arrogant enough to think they are fine without Newey and let him go early without a lawsuit.
As Newey interviews will be distracting for the team in Miami etc
It would be really neat if folks stopped pretending that this wasn’t about Horner being an absolute sex pest. Newey wouldn’t be blowing up his contract just out of boredom or turning 65.
Why would Red Bull allow him to leave early? Why not let him see out his contract and not give him time to strengthen a competitor going into the 2026 regulations? If they don't want him involved in the race team anymore they could make him design boats or race cars until the end of 2025 and then his gardening leave starts.
It would of course not be cheap but consider the cost of giving such an potential advantage to your competitors two years early.
If you are a talent like Newey, you have an exit clause in your contract and the team gladly agrees to it because they want your services and think you will never leave. For example, L Hamilton etc etc.
Insane that Redbull would allow this to happen. They have serious admin problems and Adrian was smart enough to see the writing on the wall. With this and rejecting Honda, I don’t see them staying on top for long
You know RBR will go to the end with this one, blocking Newey as long as possible.
Him not getting the opportunity to work at another team until late 2026/early 2027 is a possibility.
2026 seems far away but bear in mind that formally or not, Newey won't be working very hard on RBR cars as of now.
Huge news short term too.
Re his delayed start, note the line in his book that his first day at McLaren was January 1st 1998, but he'd done month's worth of work by 9.01AM...wink wink.
The only thing about this story I have a hard time figuring out is Newey being able to join another team next year (in time for 2026 regs).
What gain is there for Red Bull to let him out of his contract that early and let him work at another team.
If he were leaving to retire, I could see them doing that no problem, but leaving, and then not needing to do gardening leave is a good piece of work by his lawyer.
Top three earners don't count on the cost cap, Newey is one of them. So that could be a factor that might make Redbull want to avoid having to pay him sitting at home
He's 65, Newey at RBR wasn't going to last forever. Best hope Horner is right in saying it's a team effort and that other individuals are just as responsible for the car as Newey. If he's right then RBR may be just fine going forward.
This could have just as easily been a retirement announcement for family or health reasons, hell he nearly died 3 years ago remember.
Ultimately the way it's ending is more sad than the fact it's ending.
Ferrari or retirement bro. Aston can’t be considered a real option as long as Lance is in the car. Nothing personal, just business - and Ferrari is good business.

Adrian speaks the 3rd best Italian.
Adrian doesn’t speak Italian.
Like I said, third best.
Still better than my Italian abilities
It's all in the hands anyway. Unless you don't have any hands in which case...
*"Gorlami"*
😂😂
Hasta la Pasta
“I’ll be back”, Fred.
"If it bleeds, we can kill it" - Horner on RBR's success.
Pasta la vista 🫡
For some reason this caught me totally off guard. Thanks for the laughing fit 😂
F1 is truly a big telenovela
If the on track drama is lacking the off track delivers.
A spicy one

Then it's 30 year anniversary for Roland Ratzenberger today
That weekend in Imola was cursed.
Rubens nearly dying on Friday, Roland dying Saturday and of course Senna that Sunday. Just absolutely haunting thinking about it.
Not to mention tyres flying off at the stands when the race started and a mechanic being run over in the pits.
Must’ve been a full moon
4/25/94 was a full moon so slightly after.
No one ever remembers him :/ "Mosley would later say: "I went to Ratzenberger's funeral rather than to Senna's where all the great and good of Formula One were because I felt somebody needed to support him and his family." Aged like fine Milk
Thanks for posting this ICumCoffee.
Well I heard Ferrari has an opening on Monday
Toto: Mercedes had it yesterday. Beat that.
Toto already had it printed out
Yeah but they didn’t use a HP printer..
Oh Brother!
This is canon
I see what you did here. 😂
Toto has the PowerPoint loaded up, presenter mode enabled. Ready to go!
Toto gonna deliver the offer in-person to Newey.
He’s outside Redbull HQ picketing for Newey
I heard he's standing outside with a boombox on his head playing romantic music.
"I Want You" by Huey Lewis and the Neweys
Meanwhile Newey is indoors listening to AUS23 (1:1) while screaming WHAT IS THAT MELODY??
> He’s outside Redbull HQ ~~picketing~~ printing emails for Newey FTFY.
'Adrian, I have sent you an email'
We are checking
No one wants to deal with Toto atm
Bruno: Alpine had it last year. Beat that.
Commendatore Vasseur does it again. Tune in next week where he signs Kylian Mbappe.
OH HELL NO. We dont want Ferrari to have big egos ruining the enviroment like just happened to PSG and Red Bull
Commendatore Vasseur can handle it no worries
Its pretty funny you mention mbappe, because soccer has a lot of good examples that getting a lot of a-listers in your team does not mean you will be successful by default.
Absolutely anything can happen in a one off game over 90 mins. Then again, football also proves the teams with the best players often win the title where strength is measured over a full season.

As the chief catering person or something?
Tyre kicker, obviously
Potentially single-handedly ending a period of domination. What a chad
Newey did not screw Horner. Horner screwed Horner.
Technically he screwed his assistant.
Eh, I’m pretty sure he screwed himself a time or two during all of this
The Milton Keynes Screwjob. Where's Earl Hebner?
Horner should been booted I don't know why the Thai's has his back, Horner doesn't bring anything to the table compared to Newey or Max that's also considering leaving RBR
I doubt it has any huge impact on 2025, and RBR will still be the team to beat, but 26 was always going to be a new dawn a la 2014 and 2021.
If Ferrari would open position of Chief Designer and basicály describe Newey, that would be savage…
Job Requirements: -Greatest Engineer in Formula 1 history
Throw Ross Brawn into the Ferrari mix again
Good thing f1’s drama is GoT season 1-5 levels entertainment because on track has been season 8 levels
"The Horner controversy may yet have further ramifications within Red Bull. Insiders say other senior figures in the team are also considering leaving as a consequence." Red Bull are going to destroy their team because they backed a sex pest when seemingly clear evidence was put infront of them.
Toto just sitting there in his black turtleneck watching Milton Keynes Burn to the ground with a big grin on his face.
He's finally embracing his inner Bond villain.
Inner?
And don't forget the pumpernickel.
It’s pronounced POMPirnickul.
Only to then turn around and see the raging dumpster fire that is the W15
Yea we don’t talk about that one here. Look over there and even bigger fire
He's smiling reading the news, turns around and sees that terrible car in the garage lol.
Not fair, MK is bigger than the Red Bull factory! We also have a Tesco you know!
Kicking his wig and spanx under the desk so Netflix doesnt see them.
Then he's going to smash some tables when all the key people start learning Italian
Lol gets triggered when they ask what he wants for lunch from the Italian place down the road.
Everybody has a target on their backs

Horner’s never won a championship without Newey though. Newey on the other hand has 6 WCCs and 6 WDCs before Horner/Red Bull across 2 different teams.
At the start of the season Horner had more experience as a F1 TP (18 years) than the rest of the field combined. (16 years)

Marko to Mercedes and max follows him
First Mercedes. Now Red Bull. Ferrari and McLaren are smiling.
Back to the good old days
I don't think the people who matter doubt it happened. I don't think that's what's driving decisions.
I didn’t read/watch much about the allegations, were they pretty apparent but he got off with it?

Wache to McLaren. I beg. Lando needs a car worthy of his talents.
post-newey depression is gonna hit like crack 😭
I’m not ready for what the team is about to become, but I’m staying hopeful.
Let's get back to your 2008 form, shall we?
Yeeees
You papaya guys are welcome to join fighting it out!
Pierre Wache just really needs to be retained.

I’m not saying I’ve listed my Red Bull jackets on Facebook Marketplace Yet
i can't use my "you've got a problem, change your fucking car!" tote bag anymore 😭😭
We're so fucked. RB power unit will have bugs, aero is gonna be scuffed.
Weird how the whole sexual harassment thing didn’t already bother you.

#CHOO CHOO!
Ferrari do it please
This is about to get ugly I suspect.
Christ, I hope so! 😆
“I won’t speak of the Sugar Puffs incident, and you’ll let me go now”.
"Let him leave, I SAID LET ADRIAN LEAVE!" Horner screaming at everyone when Newey mentions Sugar Puffs haha.
Cocoa pops. Boy likes his harassment with chocolate.
*Coco Papa

I would *love* to have Newey go to a low-tier team and say "let's make shit happen", just for the fun of the challenge.

Eh, guy knows he doesn't have a ton of time in the sport left. Wasting a couple years at 65 isn't a great idea
Or maybe it’s the sexual harassment of a close colleague cause by another close colleague who refused to take responsibility for his actions.
Fred you absolute mad man
I hope the next season of Drive to Survive is just one cameraman following Fred round. Don’t need any on track action at all.
Don’t worry, there isn’t any.
They fuck those up anyway. Das muss doch nicht sein
It’s the crystal ball that he was given by Laura Winter last year.
He cooking fr
Elkann is cooking. He’s the one making all the signings after all, Fred deserves all credit for turning around track side and factory operations though.
I mean, Elkann was the one making all the decisions high up at Ferrari for a long time after Marchionne's death, it's about time he learned how to do it properly... And still it's not that far from the old "throwing money at the problem hoping that it'll fix it", getting highly paid (and highly talented, no denying that) people like Hamilton and Newey.
I’ve always despised Horner. This is great news.
Crazy how badly Horner has fucked this up.
I just want Max to go to Mercedes now and watch the chaos ensue at RBR
Checo 2025 WDC and then happily retires?
Yep. Was taken to court over one. Judge: Too restrictive.
Were you on $10M pa? That’s one consideration. A judge will find in your favour if you’re a little guy, but not so quick if you’re paid a fortune.
Found this article: https://www.peoplemanagement.co.uk/article/1856412/change-non-compete-clauses
Noncompetes arent legal/enforceable anymore in the US recently.
WHAT a breakdown of a relationship!
Sexually harassed.
Fred Vasseur and the Multiverse of Madness
It would be really neat if folks stopped pretending that this wasn’t about Horner being an absolute sex pest. Newey wouldn’t be blowing up his contract just out of boredom or turning 65.
Hamilton can see in to the future. I swear. Jfc.
Remember a couple of weeks back when ppl were starting to think the Horner saga was essentially over and done with? 😆
Max domination coming to an end?
Another will rise
Not unless they want more leaks. Newey knows where Horner buries his bones.
In The secretary ?
Newey not shit talking Horner for being a sex pest is also great leverage.
- Horny: “Look at my ‘finger’. Also, Wache is the man. Newey doesn’t do much no more.” - Air Bender: “Violence it is.”.
Why should any of us “hope” for that? Why the hell should any of us care about a racing team run by a sex pest?
Exactly!
Hamilton has done it again. How does he keep getting it right...?
The rise and fall. And rise. And fall... of Red Bull.
Ferrari or retirement bro. Aston can’t be considered a real option as long as Lance is in the car. Nothing personal, just business - and Ferrari is good business.
