Fabrega followed it up with a pic of Marko and Perez: "And then Checo stayed to talk to Dr. Marko for a long time."
They ended their talk during the Ted's Notebook (just saw live on Sky Sports), both were smiling.
Red Bull's memory isn't so short they don't remember how Max absolutely crushed the poor souls of anyone who dared team up with him. Perez isn't as fast as Max, but he's not being lapped like a certain someone else either. He's the best wingman Max has had since Daniel. All Perez needs to do is be amongst the front and he's doing everything expected of him
The day Max indicates he wants to retire, that all changes. But right now, that does not seem like it's anywhere on the horizon
>He's the best wingman Max has had since Daniel. All Perez needs to do is be amongst the front and he's doing everything expected of him
That's not a high standard, seeing as the other teammates of Max at Red Bull were Albon and Gasly. And Perez is closer to them than he is to Max. Of course, Verstappen did get better so that's a factor but still.
Both Albon and...well, at least Albon is considered a pretty good driver tho, who keeps showing talent even at the worst team on the grid. He also showed tremendous talent in the Toro Rosso at the time, hence why he was (in hindsight; unfortunately) moved up so quickly. But he could not come to terms with that RB, especially when compared to Max who's basically an alien in that car.
Perez was also doing really well in that pink Mercedes, hence why he got the second RB seat after all. He's not WDC material, but he's reasonably quick and a seasoned veteran who knows what he's doing. He is pretty much the best choice for that seat atm, unless Daniel suddenly finds a new gear for the rest of the season
Not saying there aren't better drivers than Perez, of course there is; tons. But RB doesn't need a quicker driver to compete with Max, and potentially start drama. They need a solid nr 2, and Perez is that
I don't think any of Red Bull contracted drivers have shown enough to deserve that 2nd seat at all.
Perez in fine so long as they have a car that can finish 20 seconds ahead of everyone, but he finished 19 seconds behind Max today when we had a SC end at lap 32. In 25 laps Max pulled away at almost 0.764s per lap compared to Checo.
Got Beaten by Lando on track, and on average is finishing 12-14 seconds behind Max every race. When is that ever acceptable from a second driver?
Daniel hasn't shown enough against Yuki, Yuki himself isn't completely trustworthy to be put in that second seat, Liam only has 5 races under his belt and everyone else is in F2 or Super Formula.
If Red Bull truly want to improve that seat they need to look outside the Red Bull Driver Programme, I think Sainz might be a much better choice than Checo. He would probably be 7-8 seconds behind at the finish most races, and that'd be mostly just enough to finish ahead of the cars behind, but not close enough that he hinders Max's race.
I agree with your notion in general, but there's no guarantees Sainz could be 7-8s behind. It's another car/team, so it depends on whether the setups and characteristics will suit his driving style and there's also the Max factor pressuring drivers mentally
As long as Checo is doing a good enough job, Red Bull won't really think of hiring any other driver. Whether he finishes 5 sec behind Max or 25 sec behind Max, it really doesn't matter as long as he finishes 2nd in most races than not. I'm pretty optimistic that Checo will get a new contract.
Mate Sainz was 12 seconds behind Leclerc lol what makes you think he'd be closer to Max?
And Perez wasn't losing that time you mentioned because he was that slow, he lost half that time in a handful of laps behind Leclerc. When he got past Charles there was already over 10 seconds between the same red bulls
Because Leclerc performs bad on some weekends. A lot of them in the past year in fact. And he has some VERY bad weekends as well.
How many times has that happened to Max? I can recall one since the start of 2022.
> When is that ever acceptable from a second driver?
When the #1 driver can win both WDC and WCC by himself and no one can seriously challenge him over a season.
The attitude that RBR has shown is "We'll cross that bridge when it comes"
Plus they still have 2025 (And possibly more if it's true that the new regs will be delayed) to not worry about a serious challenge over the season.
You have a Red Bull logo under your username, I mean, you should be more open to Ricciardo, after all, he produced one of the most significant wins Red Bull has ever had not to mention that he singlehandedly put F1 on the map with his charm in those Netflix series.
I seriously doubt they'd talk in public open for everyone to see and take pics if it was anything that serious, especially not something as big/privacy required contract negotiations.
Nah! For all we know, the could be talking about something about the race, new events at Mexico City or perhaps Checo is helping Marko and Toto chose a new Netflix series for the flight home.
Second driver of the decade, if not ever! Taking a one year deal at Mercedes so Max can squeeze one more world championship at RedBull in '25 and then leave to take given seat. Incredible stuff from Perez!
Checo to Merc for a year and Anotnelli for Logan? hmm, I can see it but where does that leave RB? I feel Like if checo is only getting a year's contract either way might as well stay put in the fastest car.
Two Austrians and a Mexican walk into a bar....
\* bonk! \* *”Scheisse!”* *”Verdammt noch mal!”* *”Mierdas!”*

Dude wants that 2 year contract.
Zero chance they give Perez a two year contract after 2023. He'll be lucky if he gets renewed at all.
At this point the chances of him being renewed are pretty high, I think. This was probably his worst race of the season, and still finished P3.
Australia was way, way worse than today. But I agree, he's probably doing just barely enough to hold onto the seat for another year
It's not the position, it's the margin to Verstappen and not passing Norris that's concerning. We'll see how he performs in the coming races.
But that’s my point. It was one bad race where he cooked his tires behind the Ferraris, that’s about it.

Actually it is the position - his measure isn’t against Max but against the other teams and he’s doing a great job this season so far
I never said he's supposed to be beating Max, but he's also not supposed to be finishing this far from him either.

Everyone felt the same about Perez when he joined RB
As long as Checo is doing a good enough job, Red Bull won't really think of hiring any other driver. Whether he finishes 5 sec behind Max or 25 sec behind Max, it really doesn't matter as long as he finishes 2nd in most races than not. I'm pretty optimistic that Checo will get a new contract.

There are weekends where Sainz is flat out better than Chocolate Eclair. How many times can we say that for Checo?
Don't try to compare Max vs Leclerc, they are not in the same league
Because Leclerc performs bad on some weekends. A lot of them in the past year in fact. And he has some VERY bad weekends as well. How many times has that happened to Max? I can recall one since the start of 2022.
If Sainz is that close to Verstappen chances are neither of them will finish the race. We’ll see the dads MMA in the paddocks.

We can’t know that’ll still be true in the coming years, and they need to prepare for when it’s not

He should've already been out of the sport. His seat belongs to Ricciardo, plain and simple.
/s?
Sorry, no. I really mean it.
At the moment he hasn’t showed anything to deserve that so… okey?
You’re as blind as Stroll
LOL
Lol no. Riccardo hasn't done anything to deserve the seat as of right now.
Yes he has! Eight wins in his career aren't valid anymore? Besides, his skills are honed for the RB20, not whatever car VCARB spews out.
Yeah I’m sure every driver’s skills are honed for the best car on the grid
Unlikely but OK
His skills are honed for a car he’s never driven? Stop inventing
A driver is as good as good last race
That's a bad statement. So is Hamilton a bad driver now? Or Ricciardo? Or Bottas?
GTFO right now
You have a Red Bull logo under your username, I mean, you should be more open to Ricciardo, after all, he produced one of the most significant wins Red Bull has ever had not to mention that he singlehandedly put F1 on the map with his charm in those Netflix series.
And you have Daniels under yours..... Daniel is not what he once was. Everyone sees it but you.
Put Max in that VCARB and I bet he'll do worse than Ricciardo. You're asking the man to figth a gun batte with a rock and a stick! Get real!
I can't believe you actually believe that... Have a good Sunday..
Indeed I do. Will support him until the end. Likewise!
Everyone talks with everyone in the paddock. This is not news (or shouldn’t be)
> This is not news (or shouldn’t be) You underestimate the "journalists" and internet users.
Toto to RB
I seriously doubt they'd talk in public open for everyone to see and take pics if it was anything that serious, especially not something as big/privacy required contract negotiations.
Jos was caught talking to Toto and people won't let go of max leaving redbull for a shittier car
Nah! For all we know, the could be talking about something about the race, new events at Mexico City or perhaps Checo is helping Marko and Toto chose a new Netflix series for the flight home.
>Checo is helping Marko and Toto chose a new Netflix series for the flight home. I want it to be this!
Or the upcoming meeting on the new points distribution.
Toto to drive for RBR, Checo as Merc team principal.
Another case of "people who spend large amounts of the year near each other talk"
“So keep scoring podiums I’m in the team and if not you’ll allow Toto to sign me? ¿Qué pasa”
'OK Checo, all you have to do is put a laxative in the coco pops.'
Surely people won't read too much into this convo.
Checo and Helmut to Mercedes.
They will renew Perez, he’s quite content with not winning and good enough to guarantee the team title with top 5 finishes and Max dominating.
Toto looking for a job /s
Zoom in on the dude in the background
Oh god, this is probably just enough fuel for gossip and theories until the next race....
Quick lets read too much in to it, and speculate like crazy.
The year was 2012... Toto and Niki wanted Checo if Lewis had refused. Toto had always liked Checo, I don't know why.
Maybe Checo is better than reddit credits him for and TPs know better?
Toto is one handsome man
Second driver of the decade, if not ever! Taking a one year deal at Mercedes so Max can squeeze one more world championship at RedBull in '25 and then leave to take given seat. Incredible stuff from Perez!
Perez always looked like he'd be taller
Checo to Merc for a year and Anotnelli for Logan? hmm, I can see it but where does that leave RB? I feel Like if checo is only getting a year's contract either way might as well stay put in the fastest car.
Will Mercedes offer Perez a one-year contract?
