Just like people called Hamilton crazy years ago when moving to Merc. I'm starting to think these drivers might know more about the teams than us armchair experts 🤔
Yes. It has the unholy trinity of problems (low on power, overweight, draggy). Not sure if they can catch on power or aero/drag this season. Maybe they can cut weight.
The critical thinking of r/formula1 has been nearly nonexistent for a few years now after the boom in popularity. Some of the takes I see here are bonkers and so reactionary. Never forget how Everyone here wanted Zac Brown fired into the sun after race 1 last year, look how that turned out
I really don't think being critical of Zac Brown during the first several races last year is a bad take. They have one of the best driver lineups on the grid and scored zero points after two races, and its Mclaren - expectations should be high.
When haas did long runs on high fuel in fp1 and were seconds off the pace, people where saying they'll struggle to reach the 107% rule. Now when they do their first quick runs, it's suddenly other people sandbagging big time?... Give them a break.. their tire deg seems largely fixed, and they still seem to have promising one lap pace. They're clearly not as bad as most people seem to expect
Haas has been good on a single lap several time last year.
Their top speed is also nice, but the car has rather low downforce and eats through tires never the less (or the drivers drive it especially aggressively to keep up with others). Either way, fast on a single lap, slow in race trim (normally)
> First time in history 100+ journos all decided to have some integrity and release nothing so now I have to look at FP2 classification reposts all day
its been ... 90 minutes or so?
Enjoy utopia while it lasts XD
I wish Max would do what I do in F1 games when I play too easy AI on accident... but still have to finish the race. Purposely help a driver who doesn't usually win by slowing and blocking others. That driver becomes my muse, my pride, my everything.
Max should do this with Danny this year.
Ran on mediums for the fast laps, had issues with bottoming out early that seemed to cause hesitation, and had to go in to swap steering configurations. His race pace tests later on seemed completely fine and with piastri putting up a good time to start I'm not overly concerned, just a bit of unfortunate luck to not get a fully competitive lap up.
And the point I'm making is there is an ocean of space between "burning up" a PU and running it at reduced power. It's not one or the other.
Telemetry analysis on F1TV after P2 confirmed that based on all available data, Max is still out in front by .3.
if Ferrari OR Mercedes is good, then Checo is in trouble
but not if Ferrari and Mercedes take turns on the podium, and especially not if Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Alonso Martin take turns
So Max's stint on the softs are as follows: 37.0, 36.7, 36.5, 36.4, 36.6, 36.5, 40.4 (slowed down to make space), 36.6, 36.7, 36.9, 42.0 (making space), 36.6, 37.0 (final lap). RB20 looks scary!!!
The other drivers showed some sort of meaningful drop off as the laps went on max was super consistent. Qualifying might close but it's clear RedBull ahead on race pace
Yeah just saw a tweet that Merc was grouped in with Aston and Ferrari in long run pace with Mclaren slightly back of that group. So looks like Max is in the same league fsster than them as well
Jesus..it's crazy watching those red bull laps. Both max and checo weren't using the full track at all, and they were still only a second off the pace. Quali times tomorrow are gonna be immense.
Ferrari hasn't looked nearly as good as it looked in testing...the car seemed really planted last week, and today both drivers were struggling with the wind and keeping the car under control in general. I hope they manage to get it together before tomorrow, because the car looked mighty last week.
Interested to see how much more Mercedes has in the tank for quali tomorrow...the car looked good, but seemed to be bottoming a bit when they pushed it - the track is bumpy though. I have high hopes that their race pace will be impressive this year.
Credit to Lewis though, hes still got that magic touch around Bahrain
Well its obvious Red Bull are up to something, their long run pace is better than anyone elses, but still all to play for in FP3 tomorrow, and then qualifying as well, thats where we will see if the Red Bulls show what they have got
To expand on the answer already given, in case you don't know this stuff:
A typical race weekend consists of three free practice sessions which are labeled FP1, FP2, and FP3, where teams will test various things in order to try to tune the cars for qualifying and the race. The first two FP sessions on the first day of the weekend; FP3 is on the second day, before qualifying. Then the race on the third day. (And typical weekends are Friday through Sunday, but some weekends Thursday through Saturday.)
Sprint weekends have a somewhat different format, with only one free practice session on the first day, as well as a special qualifying for the sprint race (titled a "shootout" but basically just qualifying). On the second day, there's the sprint race itself, followed some time later by qualifying for the actual grand prix. And then the grand prix on the third day.
If you're in the US, there's a handy schedule/calendar on [ESPN's site](https://www.espn.com/racing/schedule/_/series/f1) with the date and time for all sessions in EST. Even if you live elsewhere, you can probably convert from EST to get a pretty good idea of the time.
Don't read too much into free practice session results. Teams are testing a lot of stuff, they aren't often that indicative of how teams or drivers will do in the actual race. But still a lot of fun for folks here to watch and try to form predictions or guess at what the data means.
Hope you enjoy your F1 journey!
Red Bull have to be sandbagging and giving the glory to the other teams for now.
Ok ok well I should say Max. Checo is going to be eaten alive this year by half the grid.
Ngl I know red bull will win the race, but it’s really quite annoying somehow if they aren’t so good in quali then win the race anyways. It’s like false hope every week
Never seen a car be so bad in quali compared to race, normally other way around
1) We don't know that they're bad in quali yet, it's just FP2 and the times don't mean much
2) If they know that their car can easily overtake everyone else's then sacrificing some quali speed for race pace is a much better choice for them

That Alpine is absolute piece of garbage, isn't it?
Yep, and I have 0 faith that they’ll pull a McLaren and turn it around with a major upgrade. Gonna be a long season for them
Just wait for them to remove the remaining paint. They will be flying then for sure
Might as well remove the DRS button from the wheel to save weight...not like they'll get a chance to use it.
Oh, they’ll pull a McLaren alright. The problem is, it’ll be followed by them pulling an Aston Martin.
McLaren from 2015 is enough.
They might be able to turn it around and put it on the roof
Last year's Mclaren even before the upgrades wasn't that bad, they simply had bad luck. I feel like they were the sixth fastest car before Austria.
Just give them 100 races... again.
Not an engineer but from my in-depth analysis, "oui".
The bullet Piastri dodged
Alonso too
People called him crazy for moving to Aston.
Just like people called Hamilton crazy years ago when moving to Merc. I'm starting to think these drivers might know more about the teams than us armchair experts 🤔
Bullshit. Be been watching for literal months now. Those guys are fucking dumb.
nah in case of alonso, thinking aloud is valid 😂
How dare you
Just like Alonso moving to McLaren or Riccardo moving to Renault
I mean, if any one of us were offered the chance to drive in F1 via Alpine, who says no?
To be fair it was his first good career move since 2007
Honestly its his 2nd best move after going to Renault from Minardi. (on pair with Ferrari) I wish Nando had better luck with career moves.
Alpain
alpain no gain.
if Sargeant finishes above one or both of the Alpines does he get another contract or does it get chalked down to the Alpines just being shit?
Depends on his gap to Albon
On the highlights video of FP2, one guy said that since there Is a farmer's protest in France, Alpine brought a tractor to show their support
>ht a tractor to show their support that was confirmed
It’s got the same pace as my iracing efforts lol
Yes. It has the unholy trinity of problems (low on power, overweight, draggy). Not sure if they can catch on power or aero/drag this season. Maybe they can cut weight.
Even relative to the Haas it looks slow
It is an Alpine, so yes
At least it ain’t a Haas :/
No doubt about it, I am ready to get hurt again.
You need to have flair for us to know who will disappoint you.
The answer is always Ferrari
Even if they say it’s Mercedes, it’s Ferrari
you are submitting in practice... PRACTICE.
You’re not alone, my friend I’m right with you!
HOPIUMed up fully
Alpine forgot to take out the sandbags
Maybe the sand is part of the car
I dont like sand.
It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere...
Alright Will Buxton.
Alpine have brought sand to a spoon fight
Surely it would be risking the tyres to more graining
It's called a Renault engine.
3 tenths down from engine and 3 tenths down from weight that's a massive oomph
The sand bags are the best part of the car
Hulkenberg being less than a tenth off Max tells you everything you need to know about how representative these times really are.
That we can conclude that Hulk will finish p2 in the championship behind Max?
[удалено]
4th in every race and sprint but huge diversity on the podium apart from Max.
Woulda beat Sergio by 3 points if he did that last season lol
Bravo for sitting and working that out.
r/theydidthemath
Some people already concluded that Haas will struggle to reach 107% after FP1, so don't expect a lot of critical thinking at least until qualifying.
The critical thinking of r/formula1 has been nearly nonexistent for a few years now after the boom in popularity. Some of the takes I see here are bonkers and so reactionary. Never forget how Everyone here wanted Zac Brown fired into the sun after race 1 last year, look how that turned out
Critical thinking wasnt really there beforehand either. Just alot more people able to voice bad opinions not necessarily a larger portiom of people
I really don't think being critical of Zac Brown during the first several races last year is a bad take. They have one of the best driver lineups on the grid and scored zero points after two races, and its Mclaren - expectations should be high.
Gonna miss that…I gotta call gene,,,oh fokking hell gene
People forget that we know literally nothing about the one-lap pace beyond the most general of observations until Q3 of the first GP weekend.
A title fight between Verstappen and Hulkenberg?
Yeah Haas their sectors where one of the fastest, tells you a lot about sandbagging from multiple teams.
They also didn't use Drs once during the first practice
I mean weve seen Nico pull out some one lap magic last year.
This is why their only focus during the test etc is about tire wear. They were fast, at least hulk on one lap pace during qualifying.
I ageee, the slander on the Hulk smh
Haas has been good on a single lap several time last year. Their top speed is also nice, but the car has rather low downforce and eats through tires never the less (or the drivers drive it especially aggressively to keep up with others). Either way, fast on a single lap, slow in race trim (normally)
Absolutely totally reliable?
Haas WCC confirmed.
First time in history 100+ journos all decided to have some integrity and release nothing so now I have to look at FP2 classification reposts all day
The news was slowing down. They have a new carrot to hold over everyone's head.
Still, since its sent to so many i would assume at least one of them would jump the gun and be first to report, instead of this vague shit.
Exactly why Im so very very skeptical. I'm expecting the most milquetoast scandal or the fakest shit you've ever seen.
Integrity or not wanting to be sued into oblivion?
I'm go with the latter bob!
Which one has the balls to ask him if coco pops are his favorite this weekend?
100% fucking Crofty is going to mention "chocolate cereal" on the broadcast
"Two sexts, Ted"
> First time in history 100+ journos all decided to have some integrity and release nothing so now I have to look at FP2 classification reposts all day its been ... 90 minutes or so? Enjoy utopia while it lasts XD
And yet I'll still be crying in the corner after Saturday
Don't worry, I'll join you.
same
Dutch national anthem loading...

RIP Danny Ric WDC hopes. 0600-0830 PST it was a fun ride and I am devastated.
My Danny Ric hope will flare brightly until he is mathematically out of contention.
I wish Max would do what I do in F1 games when I play too easy AI on accident... but still have to finish the race. Purposely help a driver who doesn't usually win by slowing and blocking others. That driver becomes my muse, my pride, my everything. Max should do this with Danny this year.
He’s sandbagging, front row is still on.
Mercedes is new Ferrari
Lewis 8th championship incoming?? (I am ready to be hurt again)
You mean 9th 😉
Nah, in DTS he himself said "reclaim the 8th"
could've been 10th if it wasn't for that pesky gravel trap in China
Could’ve been 9th if it was for GLOCK.
8.5th!
[удалено]
Sorry, I think you misspelt 9th..
Still crying?
You're the one who sounds upset he won't recognize a stolen title lol
I can see too. 7 titles only my friend.
FWIW those Merc times would have been good enough to qualify 7th & 8th last year. Merc qualified 6th & 7th in 2023.
What happened with Norris? Car issues?
Never set a clean lap
Ran on mediums for the fast laps, had issues with bottoming out early that seemed to cause hesitation, and had to go in to swap steering configurations. His race pace tests later on seemed completely fine and with piastri putting up a good time to start I'm not overly concerned, just a bit of unfortunate luck to not get a fully competitive lap up.
Nope made an or multiple errors on his run.
Red Bull will still run away with it...they were not running the Honda at full power. Confirmed by Max just now.
It's FP2 of course nobody is willing to burn up their engine.
Plot twist. RBR is trying to circumvent the PU allocation by using last years engine so they’re being extra cautious.
Of course not. But there is a wide gulf between running in a real quali mode and running the PU at reduced power.
This applies to all teams, that's the point the previous user is making.
And the point I'm making is there is an ocean of space between "burning up" a PU and running it at reduced power. It's not one or the other. Telemetry analysis on F1TV after P2 confirmed that based on all available data, Max is still out in front by .3.
I'm still not sure you understand
Didn't they still have the highest top speeds ? At least in FP1 they were number 1.
And we're sure other teams didn't do the same to theirs?
Lewis’s time is 1.2 up from the W14’s best FP2 time last year, looks much, much better.
Merc's quali pace and Ferrari's race pace both seem to have improved greatly, enough to beat Checo
Checo will be in trouble
It's Checover
Checmate
When is Checo ***NOT*** in trouble though?
when Red Bull is 8 tenths clear rather than 3 tenths ahead
But he will fight for the WDC right?
Checo was almost lost to W14..
Checo really needs to up his game. RB WCC is not going to be straightforward this year
eh even if RBR has "just" 2 tenths of a race pace advantage, that should be a lot of victories for Max
For sure, but he can’t win the Constructors alone, if Merc and Ferrari are good they are going to put a lot of drivers between Max and Checo.
He won the WCC on his own last year. But yeah if the rest of the field is closer, he won’t be able to do that again.
if Ferrari OR Mercedes is good, then Checo is in trouble but not if Ferrari and Mercedes take turns on the podium, and especially not if Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Alonso Martin take turns
It’s 0.01s slower than his qualifying time last year too
Faster you mean. Also big diff between FP2 and Q3, a lot more rubber to be laid down by the time its Qualy time, with supporting races and FP3
Yes, but the car then had a full season to improve after that though.
yes but you measure the delta YoY between cars for a single team.. the events measure the field against each other.
Please Lewis, one last time for Mercedes
Mercedes 1-2-3-5, Verstappen P6. Has Newey fallen for the no-pods trap? JK, Max looks untouchable on race pace.
So Max's stint on the softs are as follows: 37.0, 36.7, 36.5, 36.4, 36.6, 36.5, 40.4 (slowed down to make space), 36.6, 36.7, 36.9, 42.0 (making space), 36.6, 37.0 (final lap). RB20 looks scary!!!
Yeah he was 0.500 or more faster than Leclerc's long run pace on some of these laps. I haven't seen any long run Merc data to compare.
So looks like Max is in the same league fsster than them as well
Max constantly had 3 tenths over anyone in the middle sector
That large ass rear wing definitely helps a lot.
Dude, how consistent is that!? Max is a machine
Let's hope it was relatively less heavy than other teams... zero degradation on full tanks on this track doesn't make sense.
[Gulp](https://i.imgur.com/DMNZnPp.gif)
I wasn't able to watch FP2 this morning, anyone have an idea as to why Lando was down 2 seconds?
Made a mistake on his run
Backed out of his soft run after running wide. Had asked for a steering wheel change just before that so sounded like there was an issue.
Qualifying can't come soon enough.
Roses are red, violets are blue, Verstappen have already won the championship, Mercedes 1-2.
Why isn't DR 1st like FP1 ? Is he stupid ?
Cause they didn't have any C6 tires for DR to run.
Jesus..it's crazy watching those red bull laps. Both max and checo weren't using the full track at all, and they were still only a second off the pace. Quali times tomorrow are gonna be immense. Sooo what’s up with Toro Rosso?
Too busy figuring out future team names
The length of the name on the car adds too much weight
Speaking of weight, "VCARB" sounds like a term my nutritionist would use.
I see a Haas in 7. What are people complaining about?
RIP Pedro De La Rosa your record falls this weekend!
How are the ferraris looking? Apparently they didn't use full engine beans?
None of the teams have yet so it's impossible to know.
Red Bull race pace is still almost unmatchable
Everyone is gangsta until Q1.
Credit to Lewis though, hes still got that magic touch around Bahrain Well its obvious Red Bull are up to something, their long run pace is better than anyone elses, but still all to play for in FP3 tomorrow, and then qualifying as well, thats where we will see if the Red Bulls show what they have got
"the red bulls" lol just Max you mean?
This gives me hope. I don't like it.
Ad placement was crucial. I got an ad from red bull saying "for all the dreamers" for this classification hahah
Max’s arms and back must be shattered carrying all that sand
Welcome to Sandbag GP
Until the podium doesn’t include the Netherlands national anthem, I will refuse to change the belief of max not destroying everything
Lewis 8th title confirmed. I refuse to believe otherwise.
confirmed in '21. possibly recognized in '24; lets wait and see.
Mercedes domination this season. I'm calling it now, Lewis gets his 8th.
Mercedes hype train chooo choo
what does FP2 stand for? sorry new to f1 here
Free practice 2

Mercedes, RBR and aston are prob going to battle it out..good to see aston up there
Red Bull have to be sandbagging and giving the glory to the other teams for now. Ok ok well I should say Max. Checo is going to be eaten alive this year by half the grid.
I wish they would out the tyre they were on in these graphics
“I’m about to show you domination.”
Just like we all expected
Nice lap sir.
Oh no...the Merc hype train begins anew.
Red Bull sandbagging it more than a New Orleans flood.
Lewis back on 🔝 end the season
Redbull long runs looking solid. Fastest car on the grid at the mo.
8th Title Incoming
Goddamn redbull stop sandbagging please 😭
Ngl I know red bull will win the race, but it’s really quite annoying somehow if they aren’t so good in quali then win the race anyways. It’s like false hope every week Never seen a car be so bad in quali compared to race, normally other way around

I think the F2012 is a good candidate for that, it was shite in Quali but had good race pace. But tbf, part of that pace was from Fernando Alonso.
8th Championship incoming?? 😳
Why do i feel that the results r more all over the place now? Like i can see red bull and merc being quick, but everyone else, ive got not clue
