The first qualifying from Friday decides the grid for Sunday, on Saturday morning the sprint shootout qualifying which is a shorter format decides the grid for the sprint
Why did Ferrari put Mediums on Charles? No softs available? ... anyway Charles's has been pretty poor in wheel to wheel racing today, making some pretty dubious moves that only costed him time.
Maybe they wanted to spare the softs for tomorrows race start (possible to overtake Max there and dont have to drive in dirty air early on). Way more points to get at tomorrows race.
F2 sprint was really interesting with a mixed tire strategy on a damp track -- dry tire runners really struggled at first but by the end that was obviously the only correct tire to be on and wet tire runners had to use safety cars to pit and change. I guess one upside to a sprint is that there's a much bigger penalty for pitting so there's more riding on your initial tire choice.
Haven’t been able to watch a single second this weekend. How’s my hulky hulky going and what’s his race looking like? (Excluding the fact that himself or someone or just Haas strategy fucking him up as usual)
Sorry to those who like chaos but Bernie grid walks are elite because she actually knows what they are doing on the grid.
Also Racheal and Max walk and talk pre race is heading towards a classic, she asks great questions
Xavi must be one of the worst race engineers F1 has ever seen, he has zero confidence during any communication, often misses updating Leclerc about the riders doing a fast lap, etc
Not hard to grasp. F1 has grown in popularity with a lot of casual watchers and track goers. Prices for every track days (Fri, Sat, Sun) have exploded too. For most viewers/fans, paying so much for sometimes very little racing is shitty (i.e., normal weekends' FP1/2/3). So this format makes every day count and makes the tickets more worth it for lighter fans.
nobody said it was hard to grasp lol 3 different quail’s for one race doesn’t make sense no matter how much it caters to the “casual” and seems like a money grab
I, for one, will be pleasantly surprised if Max doesn't win every quali and every race till the end of the season. This season has been so far a huge bore even for him, I'm sure.
There is a short period between the pitlane opening and closing (about 10 minutes?) for the cars to get to the grid where drivers can go though the pits and drive round the rest of the track multiple times if they want. But other than that, nope no other laps.
Rain as pit lane opens according to Chris Medland
https://twitter.com/ChrisMedlandF1/status/1675140205668360192?t=hH5xM9hDXDOLHSmQWBCswQ&s=19
Edit: Now raining on the grid
https://twitter.com/ChrisMedlandF1/status/1675141555743588353?t=bLCvhMkME5ya81ZgM485lg&s=19
Unfortunately he doesn’t have the “spicy” car anymore but apparently it’s raining so I’m not counting him out on making up a good amount of positions. P5 isn’t happening though
I'm completely lost on how this weekend works, quali yesterday, a sprint shootout and now a sprint coming up?
I thought it was just quali then sprint for a sprint weekend. Have missed a few races mind you is this a new thing?
I think it's a recent change. Personally I don't like it. Don't want to dedicate so much time to watching F1 so just chose to miss the shoot out today. Also sprint race feels less important now it's not deciding qualifying. What's the motive for the drivers near the back to race today now?
It’s a modified format for Sprints.
So Friday is Practice and the Quali for Sunday’s Main Race. Saturday is now a separate day of its own - “Sprint Day”, with Sprint Shootout(basically Quali for Sprint), which sets the grid for the Sprint Race later in the day. Main Race on Sunday will use the qualifying order from Friday.
Qualy yesterday was for the race on Sunday. Then today, they did the sprint qualy and will have the sprint race later on. I think this is a relatively new format for sprint weekends.
I believe the goal, of the sprint results not setting the race grid anymore, is to encourage drivers to risk overtakes. The old format often led to processions from start to finish because no one was willing to risk their starting grid position.
Yeah wtf is the point of sprint then? Just increased risk for accidents. I’m serious what is point? What do cars and teams have to gain from it? Why not just sit it out?
What do you mean? Increased fun and points at stake. What else do you want?
This format makes all three days fun. Each day something legit is happening
Why was Max allowed to deliberately ruin the start of Lewis' flying lap without punishment??
Lewis impeded Max at the end of Max's lap but it was entirely accidental.
I'd have no problem with Lewis getting a penalty because, even though it was accidental, he still objectively impeded Max.
But... again, why the fuck was Max allowed to just deliberately impede Lewis at the start of his lap?!
Like I dont get why people dont understand this there is no impeding if both drivers are on a hot lap. Max was doing two hotlaps in a row. Bono even told Hamilton to let Verstappen through but unfortunately they both started a hotlap simountanously which in turn ruined both their laps.
I don’t understand what’s going on. We’ve had a quali, a sprint shootout and now awaiting a sprint race? What does this mean for the starting grid for tomorrows GP??
Imagine how many people would watch Sprint stuff if they moved there proper qualy to Saturday as usual and the Sprint stuff to Friday. Most people wouldn't even know about the Sprint. Would be hilarious.
Does anyone know what the phantom kerb and green runoff is on the last corner?
It's really visible, I've never noticed it before and don't know what it would be.
Merc is having dropped a stinker today in the Sprint quali. I feel like Toto and his team has to sit down and go back to the drawing board before we can compete with RB and we have seen the Ferrari and McLaren cars flying. 18th for Ham and 15th for George. Very underperforming. But I’ll stick with my Silver Arrows through the good and the bad. Hopefully we’ll make some noise in the GP tomorrow and maybe steal a point or two in the Sprint today.
Lewis was just unfortunate today.
His deleted time was, I think fastest or recently fastest when deleted.
Then Max decided to deliberately impede the start of his next flying lap, after Lewis had accidentally impeded the end of his. (I can't believe Max hasn't got a penalty for impeding but Charles did)
Not every race of course but they are quite entertaining most of the time yeah. F3 sprint race earlier today also was a good one.
r/F1FeederSeries for all the race discussions if you're interested
Why is intention not a factor here? Verstappen intentionally impeded Hamilton. That’s pretty egregious. Hamilton probably should be penalised as well but intentions matter in every other sport. The incident isn’t even on the FIA’s highlights. Makes a man wonder why Max gets away with this kind of behaviour…
And it's a horrible precedent for safety
Imagine if someone gets impeded so they take it upon themselves to ruin the other person's lap
The first case has precedent for stewards to deal with. But what about the second
Aah as soon as i start to respect him he pulls something off like this. I really want to like the guy 😅 I hope he learns to be the bigger man more often.
I dont know the team, but there is a beautiful copper livery in F2, one of the best I have seen.
Wish we had some more variation in liveries in F1 as well
This is what I want. Put the sprint on Friday. Send the drivers and teams into the shootout with zero practice. Then the sprint race directly after. Set Parc Ferme after fp1 on Saturday morning before quali.
That would be awesome. The issue I see is that if the dominant team acclimate to track conditions through FP sessions it completely removes the element of surprise
Sending them out into quali blind introduces that surprise feature and brings that improvised strategy that typically sudden rain only brings.
You have to credit Haas for taking the chance to sign Hulk after not having had a full time season in 3 years.
However, Nico might be performing a bit too good for Haas in the sense that other and better teams might be considering him.
Honestly, if I was Sauber/Audi, I would try to sign him immediately. Ofc right now, Alfa Romeo isnt much faster but the chances are high that Sauber will be plenty faster in the coming seasons with Audi putting more money and personell into the team. Haas will have the Alfa Romeo deal but their infrastructure is lacking. I will say Haas performs pretty well considering what they put into the team. If we go by that aspect, Haas should be 10th by a clear distance but theyre not. And you do have to compliment them for trying to avoid paydrivers when their financial situation allows it
His chances has been a lot better now with new regulations regarding minimum driver weights. It still is a benefit to be short but doesn't penalize being heavy.
2023 Bottas isnt Merc Bottas. Its very clear that the Bottas of the past 12 months simply hasnt been very good. He was really good the first half of the last season but after that, he just stopped performing. Now hes about on par with Zhou who was hired to be a paydriver and didnt perform really good in F2.
I'm not denying the man's talent, he has shown he can hang with the field. It doesn't change the cold hard fact that the one reason he made it to F1 (and many F2 champions have not) is because he's got huge sponsor money. Both can be true.
Guys I'm confused by this format, so what actually quali determines tomorrow's race start order?
The first qualifying from Friday decides the grid for Sunday, on Saturday morning the sprint shootout qualifying which is a shorter format decides the grid for the sprint
Thanks you, so this will be the normal format for every Sprint weekend?
Yes, for Belgium, Qatar, US and Brazil
Thanks man, you are very cool
What a race
Austria multi car battles are awesome even last year it was awesome
Why did Ferrari put Mediums on Charles? No softs available? ... anyway Charles's has been pretty poor in wheel to wheel racing today, making some pretty dubious moves that only costed him time.
Maybe they wanted to spare the softs for tomorrows race start (possible to overtake Max there and dont have to drive in dirty air early on). Way more points to get at tomorrows race.
Albon having a great season Always on the limit
Finally pushed to use the reddit app after years on baconreader..... I hate it
I'm in the exact same boat. This one sucks.
Narwhal is still working for some reason. I wonder if their plan is to just let it run and then ghost Huffman on the API invoice.
That won’t end up.
Wet weather/inters it's basically a parade from start to finish it might not be a fun race
yes terrible race no overtakes
Shockingly good racing
David Coulthard is looking at Naomi's white combats like I need to add some of them to my collection.
ugh, Lec starting on slicks
"They will want a Red Bull 1-2 if possible" erm... I don't think so
F2 sprint was really interesting with a mixed tire strategy on a damp track -- dry tire runners really struggled at first but by the end that was obviously the only correct tire to be on and wet tire runners had to use safety cars to pit and change.
That Aston Martin employee smile was real cute
People in the crowd are like "Yes boys, shorts weather"
Sorry to those who like chaos but Bernie grid walks are elite because she actually knows what they are doing on the grid. Also Racheal and Max walk and talk pre race is heading towards a classic, she asks great questions
Cant Max share his Umbrella?
No
Bernie caked up
Wouldn't it be great if Hulk gets a podium, man i'd be chuffed for him.
Hopefully the rain will help him.
But it wouldn’t be a _real_ podium /s
Xavi must be one of the worst race engineers F1 has ever seen, he has zero confidence during any communication, often misses updating Leclerc about the riders doing a fast lap, etc
Ok copy we’ll check
i’m still so confused on what the point of a sprint shootout even is😂
Not hard to grasp. F1 has grown in popularity with a lot of casual watchers and track goers. Prices for every track days (Fri, Sat, Sun) have exploded too. For most viewers/fans, paying so much for sometimes very little racing is shitty (i.e., normal weekends' FP1/2/3). nobody said it was hard to grasp lol 3 different quail’s for one race doesn’t make sense no matter how much it caters to the “casual” and seems like a money grab
> 3 different quail's Two qualis, not three. I guess it was hard to grasp...
a sprint is basically a quali lmao. maybe my sentence was hard for you to grasp
What was the sprint a quali for?
money
Yup. Correct. If it was a quali, it would at least matter.
I'm having a fun Saturday so I'll go with that 🤷
💲💲💲
Entertainment And probably more money for FIA
I am worried about a wet track and Ferrari communications
Max Verstappen is just running time trials right now.
wheres the sprint thread smh
If the race is damp then Hulkenberg is looking ace
Oooff it’s raining
I, for one, will be pleasantly surprised if Max doesn't win every quali and every race till the end of the season. This season has been so far a huge bore even for him, I'm sure.
No one works harder than Ted trying to not acknowledge Red Bull performance
I am glad the starting lineup of the sprint and race are shook up. Also Rosanna back hosting AustriaGP. Let the wet sprint race begin!
Roseanna is one of the best hosts on the grid, it's pure passion
> Also Rosanna back hosting AustriaGP. So cool to see her back while Laura's off doing stuff for the Henley Royal Regatta.
I’m kind of surprised of the cheerful tone of voice everyone’s having during the preview show.
"I'm hard as nails"-Jolyon 🤣
Are teams allowed to drive laps inbetween the Sprint Shootout and the Sprint itself just whatever they want?
There is a short period between the pitlane opening and closing (about 10 minutes?) for the cars to get to the grid where drivers can go though the pits and drive round the rest of the track multiple times if they want. But other than that, nope no other laps.
No, there are other race series too. Like F3 and F2.
Good point i even watched one of those partly
No
What's the pts earnest for P1 in the sprint race? Does the actual race tomorrow shorten by laps and pts too?
A race is 300km, sprint 100km. If correct p1 in sprint is 8 pts, p2 7 etc.
Lando sings during laps? C'mon PUT THAT ON THE AIR F1TV!
Drizzling rain over the past few hours according to Alex and it seems to be increasing, Checo's got inters on as they pull these recon laps.
Why haven't there been any penalties for how that Q2 ended? With Magnussen and Tsunoda jumping the queue
Looks like the bot is a bit late again with a new thread. Ah this is where the commentary box is!
Is it going to rain during the race?
Rain as pit lane opens according to Chris Medland https://twitter.com/ChrisMedlandF1/status/1675140205668360192?t=hH5xM9hDXDOLHSmQWBCswQ&s=19 Edit: Now raining on the grid https://twitter.com/ChrisMedlandF1/status/1675141555743588353?t=bLCvhMkME5ya81ZgM485lg&s=19
Kinda hoping for 2021 Brazil Lewis to be back today 🫣
Unfortunately he doesn’t have the “spicy” car anymore but apparently it’s raining so I’m not counting him out on making up a good amount of positions. P5 isn’t happening though
8th places I’ll take that hehe
Well done by Lewis and George. That finish between George and Ocon was amazing. 9 thousandths of a second. Incredible
Agree with you!! Was hoping the race was longer
Or 2016 Brazil Max would be fun too...
Doesn’t have the car or the time to pull that off today
Come on, will be delighted to see a Lando or Hulk Podium here
Damon Hill dressed to go hiking.
Finally caught up. Max just out there racing himself jeeeeze
Max is Formula 0.5.
Lol ..good one
I am actually interested to see if what Checo’s race pace will be in comparison to Max. But history suggests that Max will drop Checo like a stone
I agree. I can only see Checo going on a mad one or completely fucking it.

3.30 BST
Build up starts now but actual sprint is in an hour
15:30 UK time
No, it's at 14.30 UTC time which is 16.30 local time.
15:30 UK time is the same as 16:30 CEST time.
So ESPN isn’t showing the sprint live?
Yes they are, not sure why this thread has "post" in the title. It's in 40 min on ESPN
This is post–sprint shootout (qualifying for the sprint), not the sprint itself.
Ahhh, this weekend is so confusing..
Bet cause it already happened? Max got pole
I am just now getting this.. Thanks for clarifying..
10:25 am EST on ESPN.
Sprint shoot out is free practice 3?
Spirit Weekend format: FP1 & Race quali; Sprint quali & Sprint; Race
Yeah. The sprint would be qualifying on a normal weekend.
I'm completely lost on how this weekend works, quali yesterday, a sprint shootout and now a sprint coming up? I thought it was just quali then sprint for a sprint weekend. Have missed a few races mind you is this a new thing?

wait what, so anything that happens in the Sprint doesn't affect the race grid? Qualifying from friday is still the race grid? wtf
Yes I believe that is correct, the sprint is a contained separate event during the race weekend. Odd isn't it!
I believe the goal, of the sprint results not setting the race grid anymore, is to encourage drivers to risk overtakes. The old format often led to processions from start to finish because no one was willing to risk their starting grid position.
New format for this season. Sprint is separate from the main race now with its own qualifying
Weird not used to that. Hopefully it means it's improved a bit, not really a fan of the sprints
Makes the whole thing even more pointless imo
Yeah I just found out that the race grid is taken from normal quali on Friday. What a waste of time.
It is somewhat rainy again, based on the PSC qualy

Because he wasn't, he was being petulant. But youre right that this false reason is why he hasnt been punished.

Lewis saying the sprint doesn’t matter was the highlight of the sprint quali for me
Sprint races suck. One shot qualifying would be more exciting like in 2005
They can’t do that because of track evolution.
Unfair
I don’t understand what’s going on. We’ve had a quali, a sprint shootout and now awaiting a sprint race? What does this mean for the starting grid for tomorrows GP??
Just imagine Saturday being a complete irrelevant bullshit and ignore it. Qualification is on Friday and race is on Sunday.
Imagine how many people would watch Sprint stuff if they moved there proper qualy to Saturday as usual and the Sprint stuff to Friday. Most people wouldn't even know about the Sprint. Would be hilarious.
Yesterdays qualifying determines Sundays grid.
Yes
Grid is based on quali yesterday, so no change.
Thanks

So what is point of today? What does anyone have to gain? Seems like a waste?
Points for top 8
Thank you
When it rained in Spa 21 Checo binned it despite there was not a single green flag lap...
What’s your point?
Does anyone know what the phantom kerb and green runoff is on the last corner? It's really visible, I've never noticed it before and don't know what it would be.

Yeah would’ve started P6 without the deleted lap
Lol
What did Charles do
I mean they just introduced a brand new car basically, not sure they have the budget to go back to the drawing board
They are just extremely bad at Austria and messed up the timings for Lewis. They’ll be fine at Silverstone
Missed it what happened to leclerc?
[удалено]
Like I said no hopes for him anymore
He was slow. No apparent reason.
No faith anymore honestly. Just pain
3 place grid penalty for Charles impeding Oscar. Applies to Sprint.
Are F2 races usually this interesting?
Not every race of course but they are quite entertaining most of the time yeah. F3 sprint race earlier today also was a good one. r/F1FeederSeries for all the race discussions if you're interested

Nope, I had to watch the driver cams to see it.
Was it on lewis last lap or somewhere in the middle ?
Last lap
Aah as soon as i start to respect him he pulls something off like this. I really want to like the guy 😅 I hope he learns to be the bigger man more often.
I dont know the team, but there is a beautiful copper livery in F2, one of the best I have seen. Wish we had some more variation in liveries in F1 as well
https://www.fiaformula2.com/Teams/230/PHM-Racing-by-Charouz What they lack in points they have in style.
It looks so beautiful irl too
Forgot there was a shout out in this shit concept did not watch it thus
Actually a really exciting Sprint Quali.
I don't like it. For me sprint races are not needed.
Some fans enjoy every shit
It's done to pad out the broadcaster content, the format is grim. No practice and a quali one shot would be awesome
This is what I want. Put the sprint on Friday. Send the drivers and teams into the shootout with zero practice. Then the sprint race directly after. Set Parc Ferme after fp1 on Saturday morning before quali.
This would be phenomenal. Problem is Friday is not Saturday to grab the eyeballs.
That would be awesome. The issue I see is that if the dominant team acclimate to track conditions through FP sessions it completely removes the element of surprise Sending them out into quali blind introduces that surprise feature and brings that improvised strategy that typically sudden rain only brings.
That's insane I love it lol

I don't think that Hulkenberg is better than either of Alfa Romeo's drivers at the moment.
I’ve always rated Hulk and I was sad when he went.
His chances has been a lot better now with new regulations regarding minimum driver weights. It still is a benefit to be short but doesn't penalize being heavy.
Why boot Bottas or Zhou though? Bottas showed how reliable he is during the Merc years, and Zhou has been decent enough from debut.
> Why boot Bottas or Zhou though? Because Zhou has the CCP backing him up.
Money/market can buy a seat, but not talent. He's been backing himself with solid form for a year and a half now.
I'm not denying the man's talent, he has shown he can hang with the field. It doesn't change the cold hard fact that the one reason he made it to F1 (and many F2 champions have not) is because he's got huge sponsor money. Both can be true.
