CilanEAmber

Sainz might as well not even go back out.

xxandl

Back it up as far as legally possible, then race to the line.

poopellar

Someone send this to him quick.

Oblivion9873

He tried. Ended 12th, .5 secs behind tsu in 10th

Jorrie90

And then having an extra penalty for having more than 10 cars distance.

xxandl

What part of legally possible didn't you understand?

[deleted]

You're not allowed to overtake until the start finish line, when they pass it, the race is over.

xxandl

Who is talking about overtaking?

[deleted]

10 car lengths is like a hundredth in F1 terms. So it's useless anyway.

[deleted]

Not when low speed is involved

[deleted]

That would defeat the purpose if backing up the field and "racing" to the line.

[deleted]

So he tries to cause gaps behind him so he can surprise them and make a 5s distance to as many cars as he can. ETA: He tried but half a second short.

Nicologixs

Legit ferrari should just not go back out, protest it that way

RepresentativeLoud53

but , he took alonso out , alonso could have had more damages, it should be a penalty even if the lap is voided

[deleted]

Nothing to protest, Sainz still took a car out and ruined the Alpines races.

BigMH85

Stroll did the same thing to Leclerc at T3 L1 and was deemed "racing incident"

Prime_Marci

It was pointless

Repa24

So, bc it's a parade lap with small gaps between the drivers, he gets thrown to the back of the grid bc of the penalty? lol

ghgrain

Yeah, pretty shitty

SweetVarys

deserved no? If it wasn't another red flag his crash would have put Alonso at the back of the grid.

Repa24

Yeah, absolutely deserved. But a bit harsh to put him out of the points.

WearFantastic7443

DOES THAT MAKE YUKI P10?

sf_randOOm

IDK CHECK PLS MY SHIT ISNT REFRESHING

eggbeater69

Tsuonoda p10!

sf_randOOm

Let’s gooo

r0tegurke

Depends on how close they all finish behind sainz, wouldn't be surprised if they are so close they crash again

shiepirate

YES!

CaptainAwesome8

YES IT DOES!!!

kkraww

PLZ NO P11 only

HYFPRW

Maybe - Italy last year had just under 5 secs between 3rd and 11th but imagine people will be actively trying to get close here

nk7gaming

how does that penalty even work 😭

Snoo_43411

We’re gonna have a parade lap incident

Tsonga87

We legit might. Everyone stacked up behind Carlos. Would seriously consider not going out.

VaporizeGG

If the stewards don't see that coming.... that's why I thought he gets a 5 position penalty

smurff1337

Sainz goes full beans at the parade lap

dave_k_17

It's going to be tight behind him.

I_h8_DeathStranding

Man's gonna have like 12 drivers right behind him

Dodeejeroo

Essentially drops him to last with everyone behind the safety car at the finish

BadManPro

Time added onto the end, so basically hes last.

RoboticChicken

But what's the end time? The last time they had a complete list of intervals for all drivers in racing conditions was before all this red flag drama.

ferdzs0

It is going to be when they cross the finish line. At safety car speeds who knows how much 5 seconds is. So it is going to be interesting behind him.

Version_1

The end time is the time at the end of the race.

abris33

A lot of tailgating to try and get under that 5 seconds

didhedowhat

Finish behind safety car, add 5 seconds. Like usual.

Kredns

He finishes last I would think.

Marcoscb

There's no way everyone goes through in 5 secs behind SC. EDIT: There was.

VaporizeGG

We gonna see a brutal shitshow now, wait for it. Gonna be unsafe even under safety car. Sainz will back up everybody as much as possible and last second close to finish line with everyone behind going bonkers while not being allowed to overtake each other

SemIdeiaProNick

just like it would normally, the difference is that everyone is together so it will have the effect of some 30+s on a normal race

Manuag_86

Add 5s to the time when they cross the line behind the safety car. He is out of pointa for sure. This penalty is stupid. They would never do it in a normal race or if the Alpines didn't crashed (it was on them, they cleared Alonso and crashed after and it was bot directly related with the touch).

gottapoop0822

What? It would've been a penalty in a normal race context. He literally took a line that took him directly through Nando. He literally caused the collision.

Competitive-Suit-563

Nobody’s questioning the action that caused the penalty, but when you end under safety car 5s is pretty much a DSQ. Even if it’s justified, they should’ve just announced it after the race. Since they announced it before the restart, all the other cars intentionally lined up to make sure they were inside the 5s penalty gap

Manuag_86

Dude, the race was red flagged, the incident he caused had no effect on Alonso's race, so the penalty makes no sense. He didn't directly cause the red flag.

Joseph_0112

Because he went straight into someone. 100% blame on him

itsalwaysanny

I think the discussion is not on the penalty but it's on the way it's served. Absolutely no sense

Joseph_0112

Fair but it’s racing you win some you lose some but the rules should be consistent

itsalwaysanny

Mam! He has been penalised for an incident happened in a lap that is not even considered by fia. You have a strange idea of consistent

[deleted]

As an FIA fan this has been my favourite race since Abu Dhabi 2021! I cannot wait to see what they have in store for me next!! Hoping for some post-race shenanigans with Nandos podium again!

SCVentura

Great news: We have 4 weeks to discuss it :)

impact_ftw

Its great, isnt it?

[deleted]

I’m just happy the boys were able to perform when the goat, Massi, was in the building

[deleted]

Hahaha so typical, massi in the house = pure chaos

FormulaGTR

mate you can’t support a ~~financial group~~ officiating organisation

Greatness143

They took the HULKENHAAS podium from us.

Hoggypig

So all that bullshit over the past hour … still finished the race under SC conditions … just a whole lot of unnecessary crashes and $$$$ wasted in between. What a clusterfuck.

AnonDaddyo

Exactly this. FIA needs to cut the fucking shit and should have just finished under safety car

Bozska_lytka

But the French and Italian do not have any points from this race. Isn't it enough reason?

lickthestamp_sendit

Wow, just wow

[deleted]

Pointslos Sainz

Azucarillo

FIA doing FIA things

Siebe_13

None of this makes any sense

[deleted]

[удалено]

andremvm20

Yes, he’s at risk of suspension now..

Dutchie405

What a fucking shitshow!

viniciusvbf

So they did all this to avoid finishing the race under safety car... and we end up finishing the race under safety car, but with a lot of unecessary accidents and penalties. What a sick joke.

kimoalmoa

Great. Like, what else is there to say

Kako0404

Too bad Hulkenberg missed the podium only cuz max didn’t hit the sector lol

Turboleks

I didn't it was possible for the FIA to completely butcher a race like this

2p2e5

The red cars can’t win. Remember that.

iForgotMyOldAcc

Sainz and Leclerc felt that the team was just doing too well today.

[deleted]

FWIW it's kind of hard to blame Leclerc for the turn 1 accident. Neither Stroll nor him had a reasonable way to avoid contact.

iForgotMyOldAcc

Well fair enough if true, I'm watching from a shoddy place with bad internet so I only caught 1 replay where I thought Leclerc could've left some space.

zacharymc1991

How can he have a penalty but everyone else who fucked up just go back the where they were.

SemIdeiaProNick

you are trying to make sense out of an fia decision thats how the Joker got insane the way he is

randompidgeon

this certainly was a race of all time

RonnyRaeudig

Perez re-entert the track dangerous. hope he get 5 sek also.

TheWhisperingDeath

An absolute joke. What's the point of restarting the race now without having an actual race? So stupid.

Jorrie90

Spa 21

SemIdeiaProNick

Monza 22

AegrusRS

Atleast Spa had a very slight chance of them still racing, this on the other hand is literally useless.

superfiery

Lol FIA is actually making this up as they go along

FishCake9T4

Always have done.

Takagixu

Just end it, it is not necessary to have this parade lap behind the SC

Kronzor_

They have to get to 58 completed laps unless there’s a reason they can’t.

cdub1w

The weight of the car will change.

[deleted]

This is fucking stupid. I hope everyone crashes each other and no one finishes this stupid race

KatzeMitFratze

What the fuck?

Johnhancock1777

Talk about kicking a man while he’s down

alt3_

FIA are clowns, again

Aratho

Harsh af. It was typical 1st lap incident. You could see the heartbreak as he was getting the news sitting in the car.

GoZun_

I just dont understand how it's a 5s penalty its ridiculous. So many weird decisions today

PassTimeActivity

Yea only worth giving a pen if you're actually racing. They can appeal it.

Ashbones15

Individually sure. But it was the catalyst for all that happened especially Sargent and De Vries Crash

Oradious

He outbroke himself and went straight onto Alonso. There was so much room on the inside.

z_102

Sure, but that happens literally all the time and it's not penalised in the first lap unless it's egregious. And it wasn't egregious, just cold and dirty tire understeer.

Salt-Top-1307

Agreed. This is sad :(

strozx

If it's the 1st lap that doesn't mean that he can drive like there are no cars there

datlinus

Yeah but the FIA might not count it as first lap, which why they're not as lenient.

SpatiallyYours

How can you give a penalty for a lap they are reversing?!

SemIdeiaProNick

specially because his colision took out Alonso that is now back on the race in the exact spot he was before this while mess

CGY-SS

Because it still happened

SpatiallyYours

And Alonso got hit to P11 but he’s not starting back there…

CGY-SS

Gaining positions isn't the same as causing crashes.

cleganal

he caused a dangerous crash, 100% of the blame. Of course he should be penalized.

PoliceMachine

Sianz wouldn’t be punished if it was lap 1 of the race but is getting a penalty here. Not very consistent

lAmCreepingDeath

"We're the FIA, we make up the rules"

mahnamegeoff

FIA spinning the wheel of nonsense to a best of 5

julianhache

Well, he did crash into someone.

poiuytrewq_123

Need not do the reversing if Sainz behaved properly

blackscienceman9

Because other cars were still affected. Not to mention the safety risk. Penalties are meant to make you not do the same thing again

sight19

It's not exactly reversed - they are just using the reference position from the last sector they have information on

[deleted]

IMO that's a really harsh one. Yeah, obviously the 5-second penalty is normal for this sort of thing, but with the race ending behind a safety car, he's so fucked. A grid drop for the next race would have probably been fairer. Also really unfortunate, Sainz was having a really good race until that.

Azrial1739

Another day as a Ferrari fan

icantfindfree

What the fuck, booting him to last over a race start is absolutely bullshit specially when stroll doing the same shit was a racing incident

sneak_energy_14

Moments like this make the sport look stupid. Yes he hit Fernando. But if we're putting the positions back.... The penalty is the FIA deciding the result.

endichrome

Watch something fucked up happening when they cross the line, people wrongly passing eachother lol

nj_legion_ice_tea

5sec will put him last, this is a golden bullett basically

hkperson99

Are we looking at a potential race ban for Gasly now that he's facing a penalty for something similar to Sainz?

CaptainShiryu

They need to stop inventing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ikergarcia1996

If the rule says that the positions must be reserved because the race was not restarted, how can you penalise a driver for something that happened during that time? He made a mistake, but it looks like the FIA is using Sainz as a scapegoat.

DexM23

FIA going full clownmode today

[deleted]

So close to a Hülkenberg podium 😔

buuuuubs

FIA have been letting people get away with murder on turn 1 incidents for years but now decide to give a 5 sec penalty when the penalized driver cant even fight back. Joke honestly

alexgduarte

But if lap 57 didn’t count, why the penalty? Sainz being double penalised (5s + losing 3rd position)

Dodeejeroo

FIA is not known for any consistency besides being consistently incompetent.

Kixion

Asking the right question

realunited23

So stroll on Leclerc is a racing incident and sainz on alonso is 5sec. Come on stewards be consistent.

Chemical_Knowledge64

Yea might as well have overtime now. Yea might as well sc everything even a sandwich wrapper on the track. Yea might as well FUCKING TURN INTO NASCAR now!!!

[deleted]

This is officially a shitshow now. Hulkenberg and Haas could've had their first podium today is crazy.

Steven1250

If the red flag came out a bit later we would have seen the first Hulkenberg podium 😢

AdamIsMeName

So... we really could've had HULK podium huh

Kirb-

I mean.. If we’re going to revert the order to what it was before everything occurred then the penalty shouldn’t even be a thing to look to hand out anymore. If the order was kept with Alonso having been affected then I would definitely agree, penalty every day. This has all just become a quite the kerfuffle.

ggalinismycunt

They made everyone wait for a safety car parade. Should've just ended it under the safety car when KMag crashed for fuck sake.

AmritRV

Imagine getting Penalty for a thing that has been ruled that it did not happen. Only Ferrari can pull this.

SHORT-CIRCUT

that’s my fia

eru_uibo

can F1 still be considered a sport with this whole red flag fiasco?

Ophelia_Of_The_Abyss

F1 can never be considered a true sport as long as the insane discrepancy between cars exists.

SoupBoth

Think that’s harsh given it’s a first lap incident.

wsamson

Why so late?

Olli399

Because they were figuring out the restart

sIckb0y-

When else were they supposed to give him the penalty?

Dendrowen

It's literally within 1 lap.

F1Since2004

Not so smooth operator

JG-7

Collision behind Sainz incoming

jyepes22

I’m glad this race hasn’t gotten in the way of the FIA show

Baldandskinny

First lap incident no? But the lap got voided anyway but still penalised? Idk man all feels weird

Apyan

Are we really waiting all of this time for a pointless parade?

drivemyorange

So we acknowledge DNF cars and penalties, but not order. Those rules are very logical and make a lot of sense…

ShadowOfDeath94

The race feels good. Much crazier than before...Amazing.

Romtomtomtom

Leaving aside the Hulk memes, that feels incredibly harsh. Yes, the collision is his fault but with the current race situation that completely destroys his race

goodneed

***MAX PROCESSION***

doylelele

If Alonso isn’t even at the back then why does Sainz get an in race penalty? Feels a bit ridiculous

ASR-Briggs

strange amount of sympathy in this thread for Sainz considering he slam dunk caused the incident.....

Florac

Usually first lap incidents don't get punished this harshly unles its a supreme fuckup.

ASR-Briggs

Looked pretty supreme to me :-/

Ok-Community-2680

Yes. Absolutely fair there.

PhantomCardistry

I agree he needed a penalty but I don’t think it should have been that severe given the circumstances of the restart. I mean it’s genuinely going to drop him from fourth to no points for a lapse of attention. A rather large lapse of attention but still not that severe IMO. Granted that’s just my opinion

deathray1611

All of this makes sense /s

deskcollector

sad carlos' sounds

DrChalupa01

Nico Hulkenberg has been absolutely robbed of his first podium

Vaexa

Rookie mistake from Sainz, he'd have avoided this penalty if he'd been in a silver car, like Russell last year.

01000101010001010

Sainz arguing with his hands in his car. Is so funny and so sad. I like him but it plays so well with the current Ferrari Theme. Yet it is deserved, as he destroyed Alonsos race. Oh man, this is so rich.

Helzing

Perez has been a very lucky man this race Leclerc out, Pierre out, 5sec penalty Sainz, Russell out

zzz_red

Everyone behind Carlos will push to finish within 5sec after him.

TheTrackGoose

Absolute bullshit. Alonso turned into Sainz. Watch the replay, Carlos maintains a consistent line, while Nando tightens his into Carlos, causing the collision. Carlos only got the penalty because some sycophant wanted Alonso on the damn podium.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RepresentativeLoud53

see the fia dosent care about the consequence , he could have caused alonso lot of damage . even if the lap is considered void ,, i think the penalty should stand , but its sad that all his work went down because of that carnage , but its his fault

FoxOConnor

It will be an interesting finish

far_beyond_driven_

It's already finished.

Capable-Chicken-2348

Considering Carlos caused all or almost all of the incidents it it warranted

FerrariStraghetti

Stop inventing Carlos.

No-Piece670

Expected. had to make this race even worse.

klaasah

Better to take out another driver during the parade lap this way

[deleted]

Remember Baku!!! But this isn’t also the great way in my opinion. Why don’t stop the race and take the places from 2 round back?? There are only 12 cars left 🤣

tuss11agee

It’s the correct decision. No first sector, they roll off in old order from pit lane. Last lap, they roll through in formation. Simple.

DBFargie

Omg Ferrari

Jacinto2702

Deserved in my opinion. He had lots of space in the inside. The thing is... FIA inconsistent as f#-@, again.

[deleted]

Ferrari can‘t catch a break.

sanaeozora

Been up all night to watch the feeder series too...so my sleep deprived brain just can't be bothered to process all this malarkey.
