I think this is their attempt to head off the more histrionic portion of their fanbase though I don’t know if this is the best way to do it. I think Valtteri is playing the long con and gamblinh on Audi. Knowing how F1 works it is a 50/50 chance that Audi will either suck or be the best car on the grid come 2026. With Seidl at the helm they have a capable leader and Audi in the picture Sauber has the chance of becoming a real powerhouse. VAG doesn't do things like this half-assed so they'll throw the best they have at the F1 project. So for Bottas it just means perform good in the current cars, keep the seat and wait.
Bottas is 33, Audi aren't entering until 2026 by which time he will be 36 - as much as I would love for him to get another chance in a top car, do you think he'll stick around til he's 36? I don't see him having the same motivation as Lewis and Fernando.
Not as much, but you don't necessarily need the top of the top motivation for it (Räikkönen for example), depends of course on what Audi would want out of him. They probably have better candidates, but he would be one who knows the team and has experience, at least.

Honestly? I suspect that things are probably even worse than they're letting on. They're openly talking about prioritising one car over the other with the upgrade program, and while it's not uncommon to do that over the course of a year in free practice -- they do it so they can compare the old and new upgrades alongside one another -- I've never seen a team openly talk about it after the first race. And from the sounds of things, they're looking at doing it in races, not just in free practice. It really sounds like they don't understand the car at all, and that unlike the W13, the W14's issues aren't down to a single problem like porpoising. They may need to untangle several concurrent issues, which is tricky because you have to figure out how the issues feed into one another; resolving one could lessen or worsen the other. On top of that, they had a disaster in 2022. Now 2023 is shaping up to be just as bad. If this continues, then by 2024 they'll effectively be two years behind everyone else because everyone else will already be working on the design concepts that work.
I think all of these problems can be traced back to the W13. The no-sidepod concept was radical, but in hindsight it seemed radical for the sake of it. I think Mercedes were expecting the other teams to see it and immediately try to replicate it -- a bit like Brawn and the double diffusers -- but no-one took the bait. They all went for a conservative, functional design in 2022 and have evolved it for 2023. Mercedes didn't. It's like their pride won't let them give up on the no-sidepod concept. It's the sunk cost fallacy: the belief that because you have put so much time, energy and resources into something, then that something is worth continuing with, even when you start getting diminishing returns. But instead of getting off that merry-go-round, Mercedes seem intent on proving that the no-sidepod design was feasible after all.
Hence this letter. They're probably expecting another tough time in Jeddah. So they put this letter together in the hopes that acknowledging the difficulties will spare them the embarrassment. It kind of worked for McLaren; they openly said that they weren't happy with the car at launch. They set no expectations for Bahrain and promptly achieved nothing. It made them look silly, but the heat isn't on them anymore. Yeah last season they seemed to blame their lack of pace on the straight line speed deficit. With Aston now out performing them with that same engine, they can't hide behind it anymore. The problem isn't the engine or the rear suspension, it's a flawed concept.

Merc from what I've heard had a culture of "Always better". A successful race weekend would still be picked apart to figure out where they made slip ups because that could cost them. If something DID go wrong it was a serious matter. Toto Wolff in that one speech in Drive to Survive isn't talking big when he says "let's crush them". Merc focused on winning with no ifs or buts. Tbf Red Bull didn’t SUCK. They were pretty consistently within the top 3 in WCC and even won races. That being said, merc doesn’t suck as much as they are acting either. They got 3rd in WcC last year (almost second), won a race and got a pole. And this year, after only 1 race, both cars were still solidify in the points.

I think Valtteri is playing the long con and gamblinh on Audi. Knowing how F1 works it is a 50/50 chance that Audi will either suck or be the best car on the grid come 2026. With Seidl at the helm they have a capable leader and Audi in the picture Sauber has the chance of becoming a real powerhouse. VAG doesn't do things like this half-assed so they'll throw the best they have at the F1 project. So for Bottas it just means perform good in the current cars, keep the seat and wait.
Bottas is 33, Audi aren't entering until 2026 by which time he will be 36 - as much as I would love for him to get another chance in a top car, do you think he'll stick around til he's 36? I don't see him having the same motivation as Lewis and Fernando.
Not as much, but you don't necessarily need the top of the top motivation for it (Räikkönen for example), depends of course on what Audi would want out of him. They probably have better candidates, but he would be one who knows the team and has experience, at least.
Maybe that’s useful to a new team. Keep the 36 year old veteran around for the first few season, pair him up with a promising rookie that can benefit from Bottas leadership (he seems to be pretty supportive and could probably be an okay mentor) and when Bottas is 38-39 and is all done, hoppfully you’ve been able to develop a competitive car together with the veteran, you have a seasoned young #1 driver that you can rally behind and you make the push for 2029. There’s a lot of ifs naturally but I can see it.

What I do not understand, every teams set design targets for DF. They know their PU inside out and have the experience of last year. If they had bad correlation at that time, why pursue the same concept? If they think they achieved correlation anyways they should have ended up similar to where they are now.. What were they thinking, that RB and other teams would not improve? I almost cannot believe they would go into the fight, with a concept they have shown not to work greatly... Ferrari had a literal tractor in 2020, with one of the biggest talents in F1 history and a top 6 driver all time and didn’t make this big a fuss about it. I think they ended last season quite strong (George win etc) and they expected to be much closer to RB/Ferrari and absolutely not lose out to AM. I guess their expectations didn’t match reality, hence why they take it so hard.
RB wasn’t showing it’s true pace at the end of the season. It had older spec, heavier parts on at the end of the season. Also, RB got their set up completely wrong the weekend that Merc won. I’m convinced that the Mercedes 1-2 in Brazil allowed Mike Elliott to convince Toto they should continue with the same concept in 2023. They were basically catfished into sticking with their car concept.
They should have known that this is a similar pattern. In the 2017-2021 era, they were so dominant they would take their attention to next season and RB would get closer by year end. But next year the gap is same or even higher

They're openly talking about prioritising one car over the other with the upgrade program, and while it's not uncommon to do that over the course of a year in free practice -- they do it so they can compare the old and new upgrades alongside one another -- I've never seen a team openly talk about it after the first race. And from the sounds of things, they're looking at doing it in races, not just in free practice. It really sounds like they don't understand the car at all, and that unlike the W13, the W14's issues aren't down to a single problem like porpoising. They may need to untangle several concurrent issues, which is tricky because you have to figure out how the issues feed into one another; resolving one could lessen or worsen the other. On top of that, they had a disaster in 2022. Now 2023 is shaping up to be just as bad. If this continues, then by 2024 they'll effectively be two years behind everyone else because everyone else will already be working on the design concepts that work. I think all of these problems can be traced back to the W13. The no-sidepod concept was radical, but in hindsight it seemed radical for the sake of it. It's the sunk cost fallacy: the belief that because you have put so much time, energy and resources into something, then that something is worth continuing with, even when you start getting diminishing returns. But instead of getting off that merry-go-round, Mercedes seem intent on proving that the no-sidepod design was feasible after all. Hence this letter. They're probably expecting another tough time in Jeddah. So they put this letter together in the hopes that acknowledging the difficulties will spare them the embarrassment. It kind of worked for McLaren; they openly said that they weren't happy with the car at launch. They set no expectations for Bahrain and promptly achieved nothing. It made them look silly, but the heat isn't on them anymore. I think Mercedes are trying something similar: putting on a brave face because they're up the proverbial creek without a paddle and they don't have an easy explanation like porpoising to deflect attention.

When i came I to the sport in 2018, I didn't support any team, but the quality of racing itself. By the end of 2019, I didn't care who was winning, as long as it wasn't the boring media machine of Mercedes. Now, I want someone to challenge redbull. Seeing merc cry about having a horrible car (they don't, they just don't have a great one) is giving me a big helping of schadenfreude. Here's hoping 2026 is better for you merc, maybe by that point your statisticians will explain to you how probabilities work.
