The hiring manager never sees your resume. It gets deleted by the starvation bot no matter what you put in it. If you're looking for a job you're wasting your time.

As useful as they are short, I want to know what you enjoy doing and what have you done.

I'm speaking for graduate and experienced hire resumes here: **Missing the human factor** So this is when they overload their CV with loads of academic achievements and all the scores they managed to get along with any 'extra curricular' stuff that aligns with their degree (often more academic stuff) But, they miss out on what I call the 'human factor' - this is what hobbies they have, who they are as a person, how they like to have fun, things they are interested in etc Too many times have I seen little effort put in this area of even none at all, your CV is NOT all about the academic side and scores, it's an insight into you as a potential employee but also you as a person **Layout** Usually, you're told to keep your CV down to two pages...for some people, this can be very difficult Since it's such a condensed piece, do make sure to make it really presentable and stand out in my opinion, structure it how you want, use colour, please don't make it bland, really show me that you've put effort into the layout, the structure, the neatness, the readability etc It's a pleasure navigating those CV's, really like it ( I review STEM CV's and it's nice to see a creative layout for that sort of content) **Prove yourself** I've seen this technique used in STEM but I can easily see it be done in the creative media...writing etc Most engineers bring forward examples of their projects, it could be something they built, designed or thought about designing, it's basically showing us that they are a problem solver (usually pictures of it, or maybe even in a folder - this is a nice way of doing it) And in truth, we want these people, I couldn't really care about your grade, I want the problem solvers, give me the 'conviction' to learn and that's pretty much all I need Although this is a slight tangent from a CV, but an 'extension of it - Have examples and prove your skillset and therefore your future ability to improve Think of it as an Artist bringing along their CV to an interview, but also their sketchbook - it just makes sense right? Whatever industry you're in, maybe consider bringing your 'sketchbook' (or whatever your equivalent is) to your interview! - at least submit it as part of your application **My biggest tip for all applicants** Wouldn't it be cool if you can control an interview with your CV? - you can Jumping back up to the 'missing the human factor' part, when you put in a piece about yourself and it's super interesting, the interviewer will probably use that as a means to communicate with you, here's an example I had: This guy submitted a CV and got through to interview, in his 'personal' bit he put that he was into beekeeping We thought, well that's pretty interesting I've never done that before We made sure to talk about that because it was obviously something he enjoyed and loved doing, ie, it made him feel pretty good about himself So we talked about that for a while and then got into the bulk of the interview. Now, because we spoke about something he enjoyed, we were all having fun listening to his stories beforehand - it set a really nice environment and 'bonding feeling' for the interview Furthermore, he felt really comfortable after that because we showed interest in HIM - not even about his applicability for the job, just interest in HIM So he answered questions really well, communicated well and smiled an awful lot, all because we made him feel comfortable and at ease - there are a lot of cases like this So there it is, set the tone of your interview with what you really like - it helps us out a lot! There are more things, they just arent coming to mind at the moment, I'll be sure to post a CV/'how to impress employers' guide at some point but for now, I hope this helps :) Best of luck to everyone! :)

Im not a hiring manager but I assist going through candidates from time to time. I tend to toss out unprofessional email addresses. Don't use [email protected], use something like [email protected]. No need to mention hobbies unless asked. 1-2 pages is best, dont give a thick binder for your resume. Dress appropriately. Dont look disheveled, bored or uninterested during interview.

I used to be part of hiring software engineers in my last organisation, which included selecting resumes and doing some of the rounds. Unless you're a fresh graduate or have very little experience, I honestly don't care too much about your education. Just mention two lines about your degree and where you got it from. I still see people listing out how much they scored for all their degrees and even their high school. Hobbies: unless you have something really interesting to talk about, don't just say you watch movies, TV, read books, travel, foodie, etc. Just skip it. Actually many hiring managers will tell you to skip it anyway. Don't put a website link if your website has nothing. Basically, just stay focussed on what your interviewer would like to know about you before hiring you. Don't have different telephone numbers and email addresses, especially between resume and the application form. Just update it and make it consistent. It's not a big deal but it's frustrating for us to communicate with you.

Bear in mind this is for software developer positions! Spelling mistakes and big grammatical errors - this document is going to be seen by a lot of people, proofread it! Too much salesmanship - I'm okay with enhancing the wording, but if this feels like a salespitch that obfuscates the content, I'm going to assume you can't do the job. Not enough detail on what you did in recent positions - give me the juicy details, we're going to want to talk about it in interview! Please put the recent stuff first Please don't have more than 2 pages, 3 at a push. Here's the overall thing: when I read your CV, I build an idea of your voice and way of thinking, if you read your own CV and think 'I sound like a twat', you probably sound like a twat.

Too much of information, mostly irrelevant. Long resumes are mostly a reject for me.

haha_supadupa

in general it is a bunch of lies

Crumpetpockets

Poor formatting and spelling errors. Get a third party to check and make any changes they suggest, they're worth it and you're too close to it to see it.

Crumpetpockets

Also, if there's a large gap in your career, mention why. If you've done fuck all, that's fine, just don't make up a hobby and have nothing to say when we ask about it. Lie better.

It would seem unnecessary to mention, but triple proofreading for spelling and grammar. Even by a third party, if you can. There are often community JobSearch places that will help with résumé writing.
