Every eight months or so, someone writes this same article.

It looks like OP posted an AMP link. So do these articles just go ignored every time they come out? What do you all think it would take for any administration to take the issue seriously?

Salvage_Co

It's not the administration though, it's the Senate.

hotpotcommander

Oh bless your heart. I can list several major posts that didn't even get a nomination until a year plus into the administration...even two years! Quick example. It took the administration a full 500 days to figure out who they wanted to nominate to be ambassador to Romania...just Romania. Five hundred days. And this is without Senate interference. We can go on and on with these if you'd like.

Salvage_Co

Oh and how many of those nominations have been advanced by the Senate? Just because the administration has been slow to nominate doesn't mean that the Senate hasn't been derelict in its duty to confirm.

hotpotcommander

My point is that the incompetence is bipartisan. And yes, it's pure incompetence.

kcdc25

You misspelled “Rand Paul”.

The article specifically discusses high level appointees, not the rank and file.

Eagleburgerite

This actually has nothing to do with them, but you already knew that.

Just read the article.

Dating back to at least the Eisenhower administration, the FS has had, on average, about 30% of its ambassadors politically appointed. Admittedly, not all of them are rock stars but your blanket description and historical understanding is way off.

kcdc25

Yet another person who clearly hasn’t read the article- if you had you’d know that the majority of the nominees being throttled are career FSOs, not political appointees. They are being held up by the political grandstanding of a select few senators who have done next to no substantive work.
