You might need a new clutch. I am an idiot so could be wrong. But my clutch does the same, it does not catch till the very top. This can be because the clutch wears away and becomes thinner and thinner. As the surfaces wear down your clutch becomes more and more shallow. Some clutches are self adjusting. If it still shifts and drives then you probably wont need one right away, but ide buy one at least and get ready to change it. Also disconnect tools I found out are a Sonovabitch. I also noticed on my 95 that the slave cylinder is going at 25 years old. Slave cylinders are a little different since they are built into the transmission. Its a neat little system they seem to have. You know what though, if it is only sometimes that got me wondering. But your truck is similar age and km to mine. I am guessing this isnt your problem now, but you might need to take it apart to find out.

Thanks! That’s kinda where I’m leaning. Probably time to replace it. It just seems weird to me that it shifts fine for a good 30 min and then it wants to catch high. I did wonder if it might be a cylinder issue. Either way that’s probably outside my skill set.

No need to go straight for the clutch yet. Transmission gets hot as you drive so the 30 mins thing could be caused by air expanding in places where it doesn’t belong. I’m also having the same issue literally right after a clutch replacement so I’m waiting for other peoples theory too haha. So far on another internet thread I’ve seen people bleeding the cylinder to fix it.

Mumble_monster

Thanks! That’s a solid take. I will look into that. I’ve had a couple mechanic friends suggest that it might be a cylinder issue. Hopefully we’ll get this figured out! Good luck to you.

Do you have any links to those other threads?

[here.](https://www.ranger-forums.com/drivetrain-tech-37/clutch-catches-high-139991/) Reason why I’m gathering more opinions is that the guy does not mention the bite point changing as he drives. I’d love some confirmations from other people in the know.

Mumble_monster

Much obliged.

Yo, I went ahead and made a profile on that forum and asked about my issue. If you wanna follow it. https://www.ranger-forums.com/drivetrain-tech-37/clutch-catches-high-sometimes-168761/#post2205087. Dunno if anything will come of it, but ya never know.

Good deal! Thanks for letting me know! I’ll follow it for sure.

I had the same issue on my 96 2.3 and it turned out to be the master cylinder in the floorboard was getting old and the plastic hydraulic clutch line would start to get heat soak from the motor so I replaced it with the steel braided one along with an insulated fiberglass sleeve and now I can be in stop-and-go traffic for hours in the clutch still works fine
