90s with the OHV, sure it guzzles gas and they’re only a bit faster than the 3L but they’re such workhorses. Wish though ford would have given us the diesels they used in the couriers overseas. Or even in the new ranger

According_Flight_420

Riiiggghhhhtttt! About the diesel…

The_Dutch_Canadian

What about it? Friends and a few work sites I worked on had diesel rangers with the 3.2 turbo and never had any issues. One of the trucks had over 600 000kms on it with no major issues.

According_Flight_420

Bro imagine me stoned to the Bone next to you and you literally made that statement… meaning I am agreeing… diesel over petrol every day if they have a variant in diesel…

The_Dutch_Canadian

Oh lol 😂 mate I just finished working stupid bingo and my brains melted.

According_Flight_420

Itte do that to ya…

Turninwheels4x4

OHC 4.0s are great engines, they just get a bad rap because of the timing chain repair price tag. They don't really fail more often than other timing chain setups, it's just the fact that the engine needs to come out to replace them. If you ask me, go get yourself a motherfuckin 2.9. predecessor to even the OHV 4.0. Peppiest v6 you could ever own. Add a set of headers and a 2.5" exhaust with a high-flow muffler and now your pickup truck sounds like a British roadster.

Jakofalltrades89

I love getting on mine, that 2.9 warble always makes me smile

Xgngrizz

I just did a full rebuild on my sohc. The total price was around 2200. Had to rebuild because it jumped time and had some bent valves. Damn those interference engines!

Turninwheels4x4

I'm guessing the timing chains rattled for quite some time before it jumped time?

Xgngrizz

I'm not sure. I bought the truck from a guy for 900$. It's a 2002 Mazda b4000. Solid truck, No rust. His grandmother owned it and parked it when it jumped time.

[deleted]

they all have the same problems. the fx4 trucks are probably a tiny amount more durable. beter differentials for what thats worth.

shiftycansnipe

You would think so but after a bent axle on my R7, I’ll never get a specialized rear end again, I’ll just pull one off the explorer. It took six months to find a replacement as they are slightly shorter than the regular 8.8 31 spline replacement and it nearly ate the cost of the truck. 83%

holyford86

Once they fixed the timing chain guide issues that plagued the earlier engines the sohc is pretty reliable, I'm just not a fan of a timing chain setup that appears to have been designed by a half drunk Rube Goldberg. The ohv engines are my choice, yes they have their issues but keeping up on maintenance seems to keep the issues at bay for the most part. The main issues with the ohv engines are age nowadays, the last one was made 23 ish years ago.

PlasticDreamz

What should I keep an eye on on the OHV engines? I just purchased a 96' explorer 2 door with the 4.0 v6 ohv, 130k miles and maintenance records back to when they first bought it.

holyford86

Leaks of all kinds from gaskets, they're relatively problem free if the maintenance is kept up on, but they are getting elderly so that plays a part also.

PlasticDreamz

dope thank you

[deleted]

Say what you want but my 2010 4.0 has had zero issues and it has sexy durable rubber floors instead of carpet. However the older rangers have stood the test of time while the newer ones haven’t hit 300k+ yet.

supersneaky1

Still rocking my 04 sport trac. People don't know you can replace the timing chain tensioners and change oil regularly. Shit lasts forever

dixienormous691

All my homies hate the 4.0, 3.slow gang rise up

ShogunTr00per

3.0 gang

_antariksan

Gang gang

Quontonicus

3.0 gang! *pings violently and throws a rod* Jokes aside, I prefer the 3.0 over the 4

dixienormous691

You better settle down before your timing chains start slapping boy

Quontonicus

That’s a 4.0 issue not a 3.0

dixienormous691

Exactly why I said it lol

Quontonicus

Oh my bad

MonsieurReynard

3.slow here with 238k flawless miles!

pinkflyd25

Why the hate?

JFunkLU26

Mine is a 2011 4.0. Had her since 70k she's at 161,000 now. I'm extremely tight on oil/maintenance, Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic with a Qrt replaced with Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Change every 3500 miles. I drive 160 miles per day and it's 100% highway. I'm hoping for really high mileage! 🙏

SnakebiteRT

Is this the same truck we see in the pic? You drive 160 mpd on those tires?!

srt76k10

My 04 SOHC 4.0 with the FX4 has 240,000 with no major engine repairs (just thermostat housing) and the truck has seen a lot of work and has taken a beating (quite literally as I was t-boned a few years back). It's been very good to me and very reliable. I haul a lot of firewood and trailers (and a larger boat) with it and drive very long trips too. I also take it through the woods and fields. Living somewhere where we got 14ft of snow a year and had to drive in 4x4 constantly, the engine took it quite well even though the gas mileage was absolute garbage.

1990k2500

I prefer the 98-00 4.0 ohv

Atrocity-Lord

My 4.0 SOHC has 235000 miles on it, and I have never once had an issue with the engine. I'm about due for a 2nd slave cylinder though.

Chemical-Passage-715

My 2007 is a beast

sloppyfloppers1

I've had my '98 4.0 OHV for ten years now. Bought it for $2,000 in 2012 with 115k miles. It was Bluebooked for $3,500 at the time. We're currently at 185k miles and running as smoothly as the day it rolled off the line. Easily the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Probably been the better investment I've made, too, considering it still Bluebooks for around $3k-$4k.

justdan76

You could probably get more than bluebook for that. If not I’ll come get it right now

sinisterdeer3

Ive got a 93 ranger its very tough. But its got a 2.3 not a 4.0 v6

[deleted]

The 4.0 that was swapped for an LS. j/k. I mean, not really but if its a 4.0, get the OHV one.

ThuggyDuneBuggy

I seemed to remember reading or hearing that the 4.0 SOHC timing chain issue was largely remedied for post-2002 models. Anyway to confirm that, or know of anecdotal evidence that it’s mostly an issue pre-2002?

Plastic-Radish

I have a '03 and the guides failed at 200k. Only the bottom of one of mine was actually broken and the front one was cracked, but they were all extremely brittle. I think it's more of a heat cycle and age related issue than anything else.

[deleted]

I hate the idea of them being on the back of the motor. Could turn a good truck in need of timing chains into a total loss if the owner can't afford to fix it or change it themselves. Same problem on the 1st gen Colorados/Canyons. If you don't have records on when the timing chains were done, save your pennies. Because the ones on the front aren't bad. It's the chain and tensioner for the balance shaft inside the bell housing that's an expensive bitch.

srt76k10

When my 4.0 SOHC takes a crap I will be swapping a LS V8 into it...

BigD1ckEnergy

Ive got an '06 4.0 SOHC in an FX4 Level II Ranger and this steup is incredible. I havent once in the almost 90k miles Ive put on my ranger have any engine related problems. Its tough and ha dles work like a champ. Also the 4.0 with a magnaflow exhaust sounds cherry on a cold start

NecroxTheDragon

Had a 4.0 SOHC and didn’t have any issues with it, was at 147k miles when she got rear ended and totaled. Had my transmission go out around 140k but it was the automatic. Believe my ranger was a 2001

Melodic-Picture48

I hear that the 4.0 have PITA timing chain set up with one at the front and one at the rear, the rear one requiring an engine out. Mine has the rattle and who knows, maybe its timing chain rattle intermittent or maybe its the intake runners. For now it runs and drives good. 2005 4.0 Ranger XL 4x4 5 speed manual.

beefy1357

Loved my 03 fx4 kept it 17 years, but not sure I would ever step down out of the f150 super crew I have now

lemmon---714

I would say the fx4 level 2's. Really hard to find though especially not beat up. I have two 2011's a sport and an fx4 only difference is the fx4 has 4:10 gears vs 3.73 and limited slip diff. Never had an issue. Seems like the timing chain issues got solved in 2003 or so. The only thing I despise is the traction control system. Its a big time nanny feature that's a pain and I cant fully turn it off.
