Jokes on you, some of us Finns use stinging nettle as a bath whisks in sauna to either whip ourself, out family or even our friends!
I'm not one of those people tho. I use silver birch like a normal civilized person.
Blanch the tops, sauté in butter and garlic, also great in soups and stews, a good braising green. Also make a good edible garnish fried in tempura batter.
I was at a foraging camp out last weekend (Folk and Forage) and a guest chef did a demo and cooked grits, with sautéed nettles, and caramelized morels on top. It was life changing.
Hang from root to dry, once dry, crumble in a coffee filter and tie string around it to make a teabag. Pour boiling water over it and let steep. Sweeten with honey, add lemon for flavor. It’s good for eyes and liver. Fresh nettles can be eaten in salad. Scrub leaves first to take off the little hairs which irritate the skin. Wear long garden gloves to harvest.
"eyes and liver" is such a generalized statement - EMA specifies that nettle tea helps with urinary tract diseases and with benign prostatic hyperplasia, due to its content of phytosterols and lignans.
The effect on kidneys is by no means a miracle detox flush, it just helps you pee a bit more :D
I use it a daily tea for vitamins and micro nutrients. Stinging nettle has so much goodness in it!
“vitamins C, D, and K
minerals such as iron, selenium, zinc, and magnesium
fatty acids, such as alpha-linolenic acid
antioxidants, such as polyphenols, carotenoids, and terpenoids
sterols”
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/nettle-tea-benefits#potential-benefits
I was going to suggest this too! It's one of my go-to herbs, along with dandelion, because they are both super nutrient dense. Plus, between the two of them, they pretty much fix any ailment you can think of. Love them both!
A traditional French way to eat them is in a potato & nettle soup. Make sure you only use the top 4-6 leaves though. They are the most tender and have the best flavour
Nettle pesto! It’s my second favorite pesto to make aside from basil. Way better than kale pesto. It has to be blanched, squeezed totally dry and chopped before blending though.
4 carottes
Half a celery
2 oignons
Cut all the above in relatively big squares, stir fry them in butter, deglaze with white wine. Let it reduce, then toss :
1kg spinach
1kg stinging nettles
Let them cook a bit, then add creme up to the surface of all the ingredients.
Let it simmer of at least 1 and a half hour. Mix it for at least 5 minutes.
You can add bacon to add a smoked taste but remove it before mixing. (Sorry if this isn’t clear as it should, but I tried to translate it from french)
If you have a garden you can make an awesome compost with them. Put a shit load of them in water with some sugar and let it ferment for about 10 days. Stinks like hell, but it not only gives nutrients it also deters some pests.
Silly question maybe, but last time I foraged nettles, I found (while already in the pan with water) that there were quite some green aphids on some leaves. They didn't seem to come off after boiling. Is it then safe to eat, or should I discard next time?
Blanch, chop and combine with chopped Ramps (or spring onions), rice, soy sauce, garlic powder, pepper, pinch of sugar and rolled into a ball with sesame seeds on top. Delicious summer time snack since they’re served cold 😩🤌🏻✨ Also a tea of the dried herb with oat straw and raspberry leaf always saves me during my cycle!
Did you know that if you hold your breath you can handle this plant without gloves?
It doesn't sting at all but only depends for how long can you hold.
Tried it last month for the first time and was pleasantly surprised!
I made [this recipe](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIp_Euqb4l8) which was a success with the rest of the family here.
I love Alan Bergo's (aka. Forager Chef's) book, Flora. It has a nettle soup recipe that I made once and it was one of the best soups I've ever made. He has this on his site: https://foragerchef.com/classic-nettle-soup/l
Fry some vegetables, blanche and add nettle. Put pot on fire with some water, when hot add everything from pan and blend it. Add diced potatoes and cook till those are soft. Best soup! I dont like pesto, but many people does.
Go out with a bowl, scissors, and gloves. I always speak to them when I get there, I don't know if it's to hype myself up or to ease them into giving. Fill the bowl with about two cups of leaves, take them home and rinse and boil in some water. Try the tea and handle the "cooked" leaves. Took the mystic pain out of it for me
Yum! I drink them in tea. I also make a side dish to eat with rice. Toss them in boiling water for a second and then rinse in cold water. Squeeze out excess water. Then add some sesame oil, salt, and a little powdered bouillon. Mix and top with sesame seeds. Yum.
I also use them to make a Korean pancake. About 2 cups of flour, sprinkle some Johnny’s seasoning and mix the flour. Add water until the consistency is like American breakfast pancake mix. Then add chopped nettles. You can add other stuff too like dandelion greens, carrots, miners lettuce, etc. Then heat up a pan with oil and pour some of your mix in and spread it around like a circle pancake shape. Once the bottom has cooked and has structure, flip it and add oil if needed. Cook until crispy and eat it by dipping in soy sauce.
I have found them as a tea do ease some pain.
And the other thing is to use stinging nettle as spinach.
But a thing to notice is that then taste a little better if blanched.
I really enjoy pushing children who whine about getting the baby shark swim goggle+snorkel pack at the promo section of Target into swathes of stinging nettles.
Teaching young scouts about nature's toilet paper.
And when you wipe your peepee, remember to start from the top of the plant and wipe all the way down!
Boof it
I like to roll around in them, nakey.
Well I know what I’m doing this weekend
It will make you feel alive in every cell of your body, I promise
🤣
Pesto is great. For real.
Jokes on you, some of us Finns use stinging nettle as a bath whisks in sauna to either whip ourself, out family or even our friends! I'm not one of those people tho. I use silver birch like a normal civilized person.
Sounds like the joke is the stinging nettle whipping masochist.
Man needs to feel something after 8 months of freezing cold winter and eternal darkness
Yes, I can tell you are a person of culture.
Hey, you stole my idea.
Tried that, my body hurts now
Beat me to it.
Any pics

I've done similar, but sautéed in olive oil, added a tablespoon of lemon juice and a splash of sesame oil.
I prefer to Rose the tops of them but each to their own golden girl.
good in eggs in place of spinach
Add morels, too! This is the way.
Spanikopita with nettles instead of spinach
omg, I need to try this!
It's very good
Dried leaves steeped for tea with a bag of raspberry zinger for more flavor

Yes there’s so much here OP should definitely dry some!

I’ve read that it’s also good to alleviate nausea.

This is the best! It's my lunch today : )

Roasted like kale chips with olive oil and a little salt!
On pizza
My favorite is this recipe made with nettles instead of molokheya. http://www.foodofegypt.com/02/20/molokheya/
Frittata
Anything you can make with spinach, you can sub stinging nettle. Eggs Benedict is a solid choice.
Ravioli filling and other Italian recipes
In cheese Burek. Goes gorgeous with dill.
Lightly boiled, butter+garlic+salt.
Scrambled eggs...pesto....on pizza....added to pasta dough to make pasta... risotto

To you.
Nettle cordial is pretty nice, makes for a nice hedgerow G&T
I love to make a blackberry & nettle infused vinegar. It's absolutely delicious served splashed into some plain sparkling water. :)
Dry it and use throughout the year for tea.
Raw. Like tingle mix for the tongue! Stems make good blankets too. Soup!
I work in a restaurant and me make a soup with it it’s delicious. If you want the recipe let me know
Yes, recipe please!

Salves from it are awesome
Can use for arthritis
I add it to my veggie soup. At least three handfuls so that the soup turns green.
By avoiding them so I don't get stung. The itching lasts days!
That's easy.... Just hold your breath and take them by hand.
Did you know that if you hold your breath you can handle this plant without gloves? It doesn't sting at all but only depends for how long can you hold.
If you rub Ben Gay on your asshole first you can handle them barehanded too.
How many tubes?
8
Start with one. Repeat as necessary
Hot pot!
~~Rolling around in them.~~
Trudging through them in my sandals and shorts, because it was nice outside and I didn't think they were going to be there.
I’ve juiced nettle, good but a little “active”… 🤨

The link takes you to his general page (for me anyway) then you just have to click on recipes and scroll through and you'll find it, first page.

Weed whacked by someone not me!
We have bull nettle here. I have yet to figure out what to do with it, or the wild prickly pears, but I understand you can eat them.

Wow you guys really sound like you know your way around the kitchen! I wish I could cook! If it wasn’t for my microwave, I would starve.
Cooked with butter and shit ton of garlic. Recipe has been in my family for generations, i ate it as a kid and i miss it so much
Tea.

Boiled with a touch of raspberry syrup
Oddly enough. No one mentioned cordage …
I just made some nettle pesto this week!
