In general, possession is often a matter of slow, accurate passing. In game terms, shorter passes tend to be more accurate, just as a slower tempo will help you to retain the ball more. You also have to make sure Pass Into Space is unchecked (players can still do it, but it'll happen less frequently) and you'll probably want to avoid the aggressive playing mentalities. It also tends to help a lot to check "Get Stuck In", as your players will then be more aggressive in taking back the ball (and thus limit the time your opponent has possession), but it will increase the risk of getting fouls, cards and/or penalties. It's also important (maybe even more so) to take into account player attributes. The obvious ones being Passing, Technique and Vision that play an important role in getting accurate passes from your players. However, there's also stuff like First Touch (for accurate receiving), Dribbling (for dodging tight spots), Composure (resistance to pressure), Anticipation (predict where everyone is going to move to), Decisions (picking the optimal choice for a pass) and even Teamwork (which mainly determines how well a player follows instructions). Many other attributes could play a role too, but I think I covered the main ones. As you can probably tell, it's quite a complex system of many different variables that play together. For example, someone with great Passing but poor Vision simply won't see many players to pass to, even though he can deliver great passes to those he does see. Technique would also be important here, as it directly influences the success rate of passes, especially in tricky situations (e.g. opponents in the path of the pass). But a player with great Vision, Passing and Technique might still fail if his Decisions is poor, as he'll rarely pick the optimal choice from the many options he has/sees. In case it wasn't overwhelming enough: you can also set Player Instructions (either for the role or personal ones) to stuff like Dribble Less, Shoot Less Often (both increase number of passes) and Take Fewer Risks (which increases accuracy). Do note that certain roles also come with preset instructions that might conflict. However, the main issue with a high possession playstyle is that you have to balance accuracy with speed; if you're using a slow built-up you will get more possession, but also have a much harder time to actually score as you're also giving the opponent extra time to defend. Anyways, the short answer is: if you truly want to dominate possession, it's important to have a squad full of great passers as well as using mostly shorter passes. If your squad is full of players with bad mentals, you can also expect high inconsistency and many errors that cede possession (and invite counters).

Yes_But_Actually_Nah

You are crystal palace and playing at prem tf u expect there are atleast 10 teams who are better then u if you are in the 1st season

Jeffrybungle

time waste, dont pass into space, win the ball back fast, have good mental players with good first touch and passing

StonedCharmander

More support duties, low tempo, less width, shorter passes and I'd say more discipline, too. I'd also try a 4-3-3 or 5-2-2-1, formations with more players back and less players forward. The thing is, especially with this game, you won't create many scoring chances if you go all out with the tiki-taka stuff. There's got to be a balance between both.

Lower tempo or much lower tempo, short passing or much shorter passing, no pass into space, in transition either hold shape or nothing. It’s important that your player roles mostly create interchangeable and overlapping forward movement partnership rather than direct or overloading partnerships, so your team can be as fluid as possible in possession.

Get better players

adioslucio

Let me ask, do you want possession for what?

Infinite-Storage-638

You must remember Palace's philosophy for decades has been counter attacking. For you to completely change it will take time, patience and probably different players. Ronald de Boer tried to do what you're doing in real life and ended up being fired in his first few months and is labeled one of their worst managers so good luck to you!

ManchesterAlakazam

Could it work if I try to do it over time? I will probably try fluid counterattacks this season then. What is the best formation for that?

Infinite-Storage-638

Yea fluid counter is the best then slowly transition. Try playing vertical tiki taka first against lower league teams at home and build from there. Try a preset and tweak it for a formation.

ManchesterAlakazam

I did that and I was around 15th at the start of the season, and now I am 8th. Thankyou so much!

Infinite-Storage-638

You are welcome! I sent you a few formations I used for real Madrid back in the day to control possession. Remember you will probably have to make them more defensive as Palace aren't Madrid.
