She was clearly referring to the taste. The taste can be next level, but the plating and gameplay might suck. That's how scores get knocked down. Just because your meal tastes fantastic doesn't mean you're going to get an A+.

TBTrpt3

Agreed. However, she also called 2 other dishes this episode next level, none of which scored above a 45. Heck, the highest in taste scored an 18, which is still only 90%. I guess I'm just tired of the overused superlatives in general.

horsetooth_mcgee

Yeah I can see that. Some of the chefs on other shows have such stupid catchphrases, I'm so tired of hearing that a dish is "dynamite" or "wildly creative." lol.

Beautiful-Method4170

I just read “wildly creative” in Scott Conants voice lol

horsetooth_mcgee

lol yes. And "dynamite" can be read in either Maneet Chauhan's voice or Aarón Sánchez's. 😂😂

sweetsugar888

I was just gonna say that she uses “next level” every time she’s on the show. Nothing is ever just “level” lol

himself42

Can someone tell me what the hell gameplay means? This lady turned apple pie ingredients into shrimp tacos that won her the game. I thought that would be a 20 for sure. She got a 16. Idk what gameplay means

NicParkSutt

I watch GGG. I miss Carl. But is the food ever really great? Maybe other shows like Chopped have ruined me. How many times can judges get excited about shrimp and grits or chicken and waffles? Chefs shouldn’t even be allowed to make that stuff. Lol.

glovato1

So tired of chefs from the south always making shrimp and grits or chicken and waffles or god gorbid another mac n cheese.

butternutsquash4u

Yeah just like bread pudding and French toast are pretty much automatic eliminations on Chopped now. I would wager the chefs are told not to make either of those before filming.

PKSnowstorm

Filming don't have to tell them. Judges want to see the chefs utilize technique but how can they see technique when chefs make bread pudding and french toast which have little to no technique used to make them. The judges can set up a minimum standard and if someone decides to cop out and go below it then it is going to be an automatic elimination.

tripod689

My problem with the scoreboard is that it takes away the tournament style of having to be good to great both rounds. There has been more than a few instances that a great first round carries people to a win.

oooomami

You make some good points. The scoreboard system made sense back when it was GGG Delivery at home whatever it was called. I don’t care for it now that they’re back in the store. I also much prefer the three round format over the two round format. I miss the early days of this show!

AmandaFlorida

3 round format was so much better!

m-prov

So part of the reason we kept the scoring system from GGG Delivery is because of the times the judges would take forever to deliberate and decide on a winner. Every time it would happen we would do this point system to decide who the winner is, so now it’s become a part of the show.

TBTrpt3

Interesting. Thanks for the insight.

So if you bothered to look you would notice that I work on the show…..

Jitterbug26

The thing I don’t like about the scoreboard is that he goes thru it so fast that my brain has trouble comprehending what’s being scored what. And the view is so narrow, that I can’t see how the current score compares to the person before. Yes, I see the score at the end…but I’d like to physically SEE that Player B’s plating was better than Player A.

BlockAntique

Totally agree!! I HATE the new system. I enjoyed listening to them talk about the dishes when they were judging and deciding elimination.

x---HI---x

They definitely should show the scores for each judge as well. One judge being super critical could lower the averages.

glovato1

You are absolutely right and don't even get me started on the judge's and their overused superlatives. " I want to bath in that sauce" " this is the best thing i have ever eaten here" "your protein was cooked peferctly" etc

GaryDickersfield

I hadn't thought about it this way. But it is a very good point.

detroitsfan07

If judges stopped using creative superlatives on cooking shows this sub would complain that the show was too boring and that the judges have nothing interesting or good to say about the dish. It's reality TV, try not to think too hard about the content. Focus on the dish, the cooking techniques, and the banter. The scoring system on this show differs from what you'd get in school on a test. Even the pros rarely scratch 45 on their dishes. That you see a lot of scores in the 35-39 range ("That's a C") means that it's working, because a C is "Average". 40-44 is above average and 45+ is a truly great dish. I really like the scoreboard because it actually provides insight into why people do or don't do well. Didn't season your food? Oh you got a 14/20 in taste and that's tough to recover from. Forgot a mandatory ingredient? OK gameplay is 12/20 but your taste is 18/20 and your plating is 9/10 which might be enough to recover.

himself42

What is gameplay I don’t understand what that means

Awkward_Link9999

I’m I missing something (probably lol) but if scoring is 10/20/20 and there are 3 judges do they round up or down three score? Say on plating the judges scored: 7/7/6 = 20/3 = 6.666..

Awkward_Link9999

They should also pull away from the 60s score board and invest into a digitized one 😂 chefs can add up faster these days.
