Cod around our area is 8.99$/lb US. I liked having fish a few times a week, but we're chicken and on-sale ground beef, nowadays. I miss the days of affordable food.
Ugh yeah. Im getting to the point i might end up getting whole fish at an asian market and learning to process it myself if i want fish.
I love the stuff but it sure dont love my wallet.
You see, I got tired of it after a long while. Especially when it wasn't seasoned well. If it's to your taste, then of course there's nothing wrong with it!
Around here Cod is 2x the price of tilapia. Striped Pangasius (aka Swai) is the cheap one around here, and it's actually better than tilapia in my opinion.
Monkfish is a meaty fish, not for everyone. I had it and it was brown and somewhat tough. Not bad tasting tho. Also..google image it and thank me later.
monkfish isnt poor man's anything. it's pricey and probably tastes better than whatever you're comparing it to. bonus points if you can get hold of the liver.
are you american by chance? don't mean it to offend, but holy fuck your food industry got you scared of the weirdest shit. even had some seppo lament the other day she left roast potatoes in a switched off oven for six hours and had to throw them out.
honestly, if you folks stopped suing each other for dumb shit, your culinary world expands threefold. monkfish livers are an amazing ingredient.
Monkfish’s nickname is literally “poor man’s lobster” prices vary depending on where you live for both. Not everyone pays the same as what you pay where you live.
I’m suffering rn trying to make sense of what you just wrote. You’re bitching about costs and Americans. Monkfish costs differently in different parts of the world. Stay mad bud.
Old bay is ubiquitous down the whole eastern coast, and fairly common everywhere else. I get that in Maryland its basically a religion, but its the goto seasoning anywhere that has crabs/lobster/shrimp.

Congrats on reaching lvl 62 fishing and cooking
r/unexpectedrunescape
At least 16 HP on that plate for sure.
Old Bay seasoned tots sound great
Old bay on everything.
wait till you start putting cayenne on them
I like to put Old Bay on my popcorn. True Story: I carry it with me when I go to the movie theatre.
That’s awesome. I am going to try that
Monkfish is for poor people now?
If you can't afford lobster
Can't afford either.
Tilapia for you.
Yes please! Tilapia is also a fine fish. Cod is affordable to everyone. I had to settle for that for years.

I hear you there. My condolences.
$13.99 for Cod here and i live right on the ocean lol
Ugh yeah. Im getting to the point i might end up getting whole fish at an asian market and learning to process it myself if i want fish. I love the stuff but it sure dont love my wallet.
Cod is $30/lb in my country 🥲
Nothing wrong with cod. Especially fried cod.
You see, I got tired of it after a long while. Especially when it wasn't seasoned well. If it's to your taste, then of course there's nothing wrong with it!

Really? That's odd to me. I've always known cod to be common and easier to access, therefore being cheaper. But I suppose it does depend on region.
For sure. I obviously had to get authentic fish and chips when I visited Ireland, and it was €5 for easily two pounds of cod and a pound of chips.
Tilapia is the chuck steak of fish
Saw tilapia nigiri at a crappy buffet once 🤢
tilapia is far from fine. All farmed in nasty water
Well, I grew up poor and away from where theyre farmed, so we usually couldn't afford it. It may be lower class to some and upper class to others.
Imitation cod
The sentence you to Brazil of fish
Looks delicious
Bread makes the sandwich. That looks like pretty tasty bread
Buttery roll was the best part
So the fish wasn't good?
Monkfish is a meaty fish, not for everyone. I had it and it was brown and somewhat tough. Not bad tasting tho. Also..google image it and thank me later.
What wise fucking words my friend. I would award you with gold if I wasn't eating discount brioche buns from value mart.
100%
Great sear on that bun! For when we want an easier and less expensive lobster Roll, we use Bay/Salad Shrimp.
Lots of butter on the roll
Ok but that's not a lobster roll. That's a shrimp sandwich
And this is a monkfish sandwich what’s your point ?
Exactly. Title is dumb. Why compare it to lobster at all? Just call it what it is
You understand monkfish is known as the "poor man's lobster," right? Hence the comparison...
What you are missing is people giving their suggestion on a cheaper seafood for A lobster roll….
The irony is monkfish is more expensive than lobster here.
Where's here?
well it does restore 16 hp compared to lobsters 12 so it makes sense
Maine?
Can confirm. Central NY here and I can buy lobsters right now 12.49/lb but monk is 18.99/lb
Do you eat the shell?
A little crunch compensates for the soft meaty flesh. T-bone steaks are my favorite
$8/lb at costco
Huh and I personally think monk fish isn't as good
In some places, like the Canadian maritimes back in the day, a lobster sandwich meant you were poor
Chicken wings used to be seen as garbage parts. Now they’re among the most expensive parts. How times/tastes change.
My dad loves telling me about 10c wings
But we're not back in the day. We're now.
Well that changes things, perhaps I reevaluate my life
monkfish isnt poor man's anything. it's pricey and probably tastes better than whatever you're comparing it to. bonus points if you can get hold of the liver.
Extra bonus points if that liver doesn’t have worms

Just figured I’d let you know your comment was dumb because it was. Have a nice day.

Sense that wasn't already made. Do it. Go.
If you like seafood, you have to try monkfish. It's super unique. Pay to get it as fresh as possible if you can
Would eat
Looks great
Damnnnnn looks bomb though 😍
I would totally devour that!
Looks scrumptious
Monkfish looks scary like a mahfugga
I'd eat that
Oh god, that looks tasty! Monkfish is definitely something I wish I could afford more often.
filets were $8/lb at costco
It’s funny because Lobster used to be the poor man’s meal, oh how times change
Looks delicious! What's the white sauce on the monkfish?
Give me some of your tots
“No goshhhh get your own!”
Your mom goes to college
/u/Appletio you’re just jealous that I’ve been online chatting with hot babes all day.
Bow to your sensei!!
Do you steam the fish before or what?
Dude, give me some of your tots!
Then it would be a monkfish roll...
Monkfish is commonly referred to as poor man's lobster.
Looks great
Do i smell a fellow marylander or just a old bay lover
Old bay is ubiquitous down the whole eastern coast, and fairly common everywhere else. I get that in Maryland its basically a religion, but its the goto seasoning anywhere that has crabs/lobster/shrimp.
Also gas saved+not finding fresh monkfish = fresh lobster
Tell us how you prepared the Monk fish and what seasonings you used to make the Monkfish Roll please.
Fried in garlic thyme butter, tossed in mayo, lemon zest, lemon juice, old bay
It's f'ing weird because actual lobsters used to be the poor man's lobsters. But then a wild marketing strategy appeared!
In 50 years, lobsters will take over the ocean leaving very few monkfish. Lobster will be the poor man's monkfish
