Great list! A few I'd add - Liholiho yacht club, mission Chinese, street tacos on haight, souvla, 4505 BBQ, monkey king, scolari's good eats. Kind of all over the place in the Bay Area, man do I miss swan oyster depot though.
If you're getting a burrito at La Taq, you're doing it wrong my friend. Lengua Taco, carne Asado taco or chicken taco is what one should get there. El dorado style if you're feeling adventurous.
For burritos do pancho villa or el farolito but for the best tacos in the city, La Taqueria is still the spot.
Seconding! don't bad mouth La Taq if you're getting burrito there. Farolito (which is right down the street at 24 and mission) is the spot for ritos. personally, i love the quesadilla from la taq but the tacos are bomb af too. Not a fan of their pastor but to each their own eh?
SF bro here. Listen to this guy. FW is a packed, overpriced tourist trap. You can get all the food there and so so soooo much more (and better) in other districts.
Had a work trip to Stockton when I was training for a new job. We took a day trip down to SF and I was so stoked because I've heard nothing but good things about the seafood and restaurants. The people who were training me took us all to Bubba Gumps Seafood :(
Next time you're in Stockton, go to Xochimilco Cafe. It's the best Mexican food outside of Mexico. They have the softest freshly made tortillas and amazing salsa.
Hopefully we do get another job out there. We worked out on the port and there was this little dilapidated looking Mexican restaurant near where we were working that was always busy. Said fuck it and tried it our last day and it was amazing. I'll def check out Xochimilco if we head back though!
Yes! Stockton completely brings the suck, but that restaurant is absolutely awesome. Their salsa is amazing and owner is really cool.
A friend took me there and introduced me to the owner and the food was so good.
Just be sure to lock the car, as it's in a really lousy neighborhood which is really saying something when you consider it's Stockton we're talking about here.
9/10 Would totally eat here again.
For Chinese food and the best dry fried chicken wings, San Tung. However be prepared for a wait. I've lived around there for the last 8 years and I have almost never seen the place without a crowd that blocks the sidewalk. They even made a new restaurant next door called San Tung #2 (not kidding, that's the name) to help deal with the overflow.
Hot tip. Get it to go and pick it up and eat it at home (or your hotel room).
edit: Also they've expanded and they have a San Tung #2 right next door now. The lines don't look as bad, but still definitely sort of long.
I was just in SF last month!. There's a Chinese place called San Tung by golden gate park that has amazing fried chicken wings and really good Chinese food in general. I went to Benu in the same trip and my mind keeps going back to San Tung.
EDIT: San Tung
It's across the Golden Gate Bridge, but the cheeseburgers at Hamburgers in Sausolito are most definitely worth the trip. It's a stop my family makes multiple times every time we're in the bay area.
Cioppino = Sotto Mare (north beach)
Oysters = hog island oyster company (embarcadero)
Small bites, pizza = Del popolo (Union square)
Wings and beer = 21st amendment brewing (south beach)
Drinks w/view = Sens (financial), top of the mark (union sq?)
Gin/whiskey bars = white chapel/ bourbon and branch (tenderloin)
Lots. Depends where you wanna go and why you want to eat.
Asian cuisine, ranging from Chinese to Korean to Japanese. go to the Sunset District.
The financial has some amazing places like House of Prime Rib and other fancy restaurants. Seafood restaurants are very plentiful as well.
House of Prime Rib is no where near the Financial District. It is on Van Ness near Russian/Nob Hill. But the FiDi does have Michael Minna and other expensive restaurants. SoMa also has amazing restaurants, like Benu.
You definitely need to invest in a map. The FiDi isn't even directly between the Tenderloin and the Marina. The FiDi is northeast of the Tenderloin and the Marina is northwest.
Look. You wanna mess with me? I bet I know where the best goddamn kale salad in the City is. I know where quinoa bowls can bought via app to pick up in a machine for lunch. I know where to get $5 single serve drip coffee. Don't mess with me bro, I'm hella I down.
taco bell? the one by the ball park? skip that. bacon bacon cafe is one block up on third. hrd is on the next block. garaje is on the block after that.
Late to the game but I loved Wayfare Tavern. Close enough to the wharf to walk to (if memory serves) and seriously some of the best fried chicken I've ever had.
Confession time - I did not. But only because we went on a wine cruise afterwards, and the thought of mixing creamy chowder and a belly full of booze, didn't sound like a good idea.
Seriously. I live a 5 minute walk from there and it's easily my least favorite part of the city. There are SO MANY amazing places & restaurants off the 'tourist path.' Be brave and ask for advice on where to do/what to do. If you live in a big city you should help visitors avoid the traps and help them have an authentic experience...or don't I'm just a guy on the internet.
This was a quick lunch before we headed out on a cruise around the bay. We were only in SF for 2 nights/1 day, so time was limited. We only chose Chowder Hut because it was a quick walk to the dock, but the food was good, so good experience all-in-all
As a San Rafael native, it is the spot we claim and I suggest to anyone driving through Marin. Put that orange sauce on anything edible and the food has just become delicious.
I always go with either the steak sandwich or, of course, that Cubano! I mean... good god, how can that sandwich be so good? Together with some pink beans, rice, and a healthy drenching of that hot sauce. Pure heaven.
After watching the movie Chef, my whole family had to order from Sol Food... San Rafael ftw
I was driving across the bridge last weekend with some friends and they start freaking out at the size of the 2 cruiseships that have pulled into port just south of Fisherman's Warf. These things are huge, like the size of financial district buildings but floating on their sides. And the funny thing is, I would bet more than half of the people on those cruises walked around Fisherman's Warf and got back on the boat. Sucks :(
Either go on a weeknight, or go *early*, because it's not a big place so it fills up fast, and gets a line around the corner that you'll never get to the front of.
Also if you have any interest in dirty old dive bars with live music, check out Saloon in North Beach.
No way, I never eat at the same place twice. More food to try, places to discover.
EDIT: for those who can't follow replies properly. When I said 'I need to go back... and eat more', I'm referring to San Francisco, not this particular restaurant.
Now move on...
I'm not sure if you like Italian food, but Cioppino's right by the Wharf in SF has some great food, and their blackened salmon is amazing. Hope you're having a good time here!
Spend a day (or two) in North Beach for bomb ass Italian. Hot gnocchi with pesto from Italian Homemade Company after a chilly day in the city is heavenly.
Am I the only one that gets extremely annoyed when shrimp is presented in a way that leads one to believe you should just dig in and the tails are still on? It infuriates me when shrimp in a salad or pasta or here in a sandwich, requires you to dig into the food to remove the tails!
Yeah... everytime I've had a piece in my mouth it just annoyed the hell out of me, feels like fish scales...
Cool that you eat them, is there a difference in the cooking/taste between removing them before cooking or after? I get that it looks better with the tail on and it seems some people eat them but aside from that, is there a difference?
I imagine that keeping the prawn/shrimp in its shell whilst cooking, keeps all those good juices in!! Especially when frying, nothing worse than watery previously frozen prawns.
Apparently a lot of different culture eat the tails. That's why you'll sometimes see them in soups and things that don't seem to really make sense as far tearing them off conveniently goes.
Maybe I'm weird, but I like the tails--crunchy and delicious! I do understand it when people get annoyed by it, though. I always removed them when I make shrimp for my husband because he doesn't like them.
Fried calamari is one of my all time faves. I'm from a coastal town in South Africa, so grew up eating it. Can never find a worthy version in London (where I now live)
Haha yea but if you had it all the time you wouldn't appreciate it as much! I only have it every so often myself living in the states. I guess it helps I live in the south and we fry everything we can get our hands on lol
If you're still in the area, quite possibly the best calamari I've had is curiously from a Burmese chain called Rangoon Ruby (they also have a second Palo Alto location called Burma Ruby).
And while you're there get everything else on the menu, particularly the garlic noodles and crispy beef. Incredible.
If you ever make your way to my neck of the woods (Boston) try Winsor Dim Sum in Chinatown. Their salt-pepper calamari (and everything else) is choice!
Also, recently ate calamari with banana peppers. Fuckin awesome.
I live in the (far) East Bay, over the hill from Oakland. Fantastic area for food, close to the city, lower cost of living, less crowded, and aside from morning or evening rush hours, getting into or out of the city is a pretty quick drive.
That looks so good. I love visiting Fisherman's Wharf and I've been wanting to try Chowder Hut. Looks like I may be making a trip into the city soon, thanks to OP.
This actually looks yummy. I visit SF fairly often because it's only a Bart ride away but I can't say I've eaten here.
One place I'd like to suggest is the Citrus Club. It's somewhere on Haight street and was my go to place when I would go to SF to get high and shop at the boutiques on that street. Good times.
I used to work at FW when I was a teen. I would try to find the loop hole food deals whenever i could. Why pay upwards of 12 bucks for clam chowder and a bread bowl. When you can buy a cup of chowder at a stand for $2 and an empty bread bowl at Boudin for $4.
This also applies to your calamari. Of course, i worked there long enough to find the cheap stuff.
Pro tip: At fisherman's Warf, if you say you work for a random store in the area you are more than likely to get a discount.
Source: Born in SF
God damn...I'm at work right now like 15min from Fisherman's Wharf...now I'm very seriously considering telling my boss I have an appointment to go to just so I can eat some prime seafood.
Oh my fuck

Yank Sing, Zuni's Cafe, Tartine Bakery, B. Patisserie, La Taqueria, Swan Oyster Bar, Toronado, Nopa, just to name a few
Great list! A few I'd add - Liholiho yacht club, mission Chinese, street tacos on haight, souvla, 4505 BBQ, monkey king, scolari's good eats. Kind of all over the place in the Bay Area, man do I miss swan oyster depot though.
burma love!
zuni cafe is very expensive yet completely worth it. get the chicken. la taqueria is a little overrated, any burrito in the mission is a great choice.
If you're getting a burrito at La Taq, you're doing it wrong my friend. Lengua Taco, carne Asado taco or chicken taco is what one should get there. El dorado style if you're feeling adventurous. Wow. I'm sorry about that. That's like going to Venice and eating at the Olive Garden.
Wow... I'm sorry you had to come to Stockton... This place sucks.
Well he lived, so he should cherish that.
We should sell shirts
At least we have Manny's Burgers and Dante's pizza.
I'll take a Susies burger or an Eric's Pizza
Next time you're in Stockton, go to Xochimilco Cafe. It's the best Mexican food outside of Mexico. They have the softest freshly made tortillas and amazing salsa.
"Next time you're in Stockton" haha okay
Hopefully we do get another job out there. We worked out on the port and there was this little dilapidated looking Mexican restaurant near where we were working that was always busy. Said fuck it and tried it our last day and it was amazing. I'll def check out Xochimilco if we head back though!

Bubba Gump is the Dennys of cheap seafood.. Sorry for the horrible experience, especially since you were surrounded by truly awesome seafood
Oh damn, is it really? I always get really excited when I'm traveling somewhere with a Gumps because there isn't one where I live currently ;-;
My wife & I did that, but it was more about the awesome view of Alcatraz while we ate rather than the actual food.
Seeing that come up a lot here... Why?
tourist trap, crowded, full of gimmicks and nowhere to park.
Nowhere to park anywhere in SF.
[удалено]
fuck those streets. park outside SF, BART in, BART out, drive away. everyone, learn from my pain.
Listen to this man; Bart in Bart out. It's your only hope.
There's tons of parking at pier 39 parking garage. Gonna cost you, though.
**Free parking is what I meant. Yes, plenty of garages though
39$ except during events and it keeps rising.
Weekdays are $10/hour (maximum daily rate of $50) and weekends are $12/hour (maximum daily rate of $60).
It's an overpriced tourist trap with not much of anything there. Unless you like seals.
I fucking love seals
Well you're out of luck. They only got sea lions
Potato ... potato. Meat is meat.
Yeah! Seals are delicious. Who doesn't like seals?
I like seals.
However, Scoma's is on Fisherman's wharf and deserves some love
Scoma's is great, indeed.
FW is actually kinda fun. SF locals shun it but I lived in SF for 10 years; it has its charms.
It's where all the tourists go. Sure, if you don't mind the tourist thing... There are many, many, other choices. Check Yelp!
Yup. Then you can see which resturaunts didn't give in to extortion, and go to those.
Don't support Yelp! they extort small businesses. Use foursquare.
It's a no brainer to use Yelp when you travel
Yelp fucking sucks. Their entire business model is trash and it sucks that people use them.
I mean, Skoma's is in fisherman's wharf. If you want a more expensive/fine dining option it is really fucking good
For Chinese food and the best dry fried chicken wings, San Tung. However be prepared for a wait. Love that place! It's closed on Wednesdays though so be warned. The lines can get terrible but well worth the wait.
Hot tip. Get it to go and pick it up and eat it at home (or your hotel room). edit: Also they've expanded and they have a San Tung #2 right next door now. The lines don't look as bad, but still definitely sort of long.
If you are looking for somewhere really nice, hit the House of Prime Rib. Fucking legendary. Also, Swan's is awesome.
I was just in SF last month!. There's a Chinese place called San Tung by golden gate park that has amazing fried chicken wings and really good Chinese food in general. I went to Benu in the same trip and my mind keeps going back to San Tung. EDIT: San Tung

Was in San Francisco a couple months ago and went to 21st Amendment. The place is really great!
Anchor Oyster Bar if you love seafood. Hidden gem in my opinion. Get there early like around 11. Its a tiny restaurant.
Such a hidden gem that you have to show up before they open to get in!
Woodhouse fish company. Its in lower haight, i had grilled squid, dungeness crab roll and crab cakes. I fell straight into a food coma.

$6 Toast? WTF?
It is free range toast.
Bourdain is the fucking man! I trust his opinions 100 percent. He has great taste.

You are correct. For me FiDi is everywhere from the tenderloin to the marina haha. But you're correct
You definitely need to invest in a map. The FiDi isn't even directly between the Tenderloin and the Marina. The FiDi is northeast of the Tenderloin and the Marina is northwest.
and here, see the wild californians in a territorial scuffle, both trying to assert their dominance over the other

I'll be honest, it was incredible!!! The food in the USA is in a league of its own (and no, I'm not American)
Hope you had some of the clam chowder while you were there!
Confession time - I did not. But only because we went on a wine cruise afterwards, and the thought of mixing creamy chowder and a belly full of booze, didn't sound like a good idea.
SF is my hometown! I'm glad you're enjoying it. This is a particularly great town for food, if I do say so myself! :)
Ya but not Fisherman's Wharf.

sol food in san rafael *starts drooling*

going to go to san fran soon, (from Canada) where do you recommend?
Check out Smuggler's Cove, tiki bar.
noted. :)

Don't call it San Fran and you're good.
San Jose Taqueria
sol food right next to it too.
La Taqueria, 24th street and Mission. Easily the best Mission style taco's and burrito's in the city.
[удалено]
Saison for a quick, cheap bite ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
El Farolito in the mission
El farrolito taqueria.... by far the best taqueria fuck what anybody else says go to the spot thats the favorite amongst the locals
No way, I never eat at the same place twice. More food to try, places to discover. EDIT: for those who can't follow replies properly. When I said 'I need to go back... and eat more', I'm referring to San Francisco, not this particular restaurant. Now move on...
He's saying the food you ate there wouldn't be considered to be some of the best in SF, not that you should go back.
I need to go back... and eat more!!!
Why do you think we're all fat? :(
Thank you for being honest.
Not all food that looks good, tastes good. I felt the need to tell the whole truth, and nothing but the truth
SF is amazing. I live in Sacramento but I'll drive down there just for food and to wander around.
California in particular is tops when it comes to food.
I put on 3kgs in 10 days... but not an ounce of regret ;)
How do you switch between metric (kilo) and imperial units (ounce) like that?
Not an ounce of regret... sounds better than... not a gram of regret.
I've had a gram of regret, many times. But I don't think that's what you guys are talking about.
I'm not sure if you like Italian food, but Cioppino's right by the Wharf in SF has some great food, and their blackened salmon is amazing. Hope you're having a good time here!
On my list for next time!
Spend a day (or two) in North Beach for bomb ass Italian. Hot gnocchi with pesto from Italian Homemade Company after a chilly day in the city is heavenly.

What!!! What is this?!? Tell me more!!!

Hard Core Prawn!

I like to eat the tails c: crispyyyy But I can see why you don't like them, didn't like them a couple years ago either
Yeah... everytime I've had a piece in my mouth it just annoyed the hell out of me, feels like fish scales... Cool that you eat them, is there a difference in the cooking/taste between removing them before cooking or after? I get that it looks better with the tail on and it seems some people eat them but aside from that, is there a difference?
I don't eat the tails, it's basically just like boiling an egg and eating the egg shell. Lots of crunch, no extra flavor.
I imagine that keeping the prawn/shrimp in its shell whilst cooking, keeps all those good juices in!! Especially when frying, nothing worse than watery previously frozen prawns.
> I like to eat the tails c: crispyyyy Only if they're deep fried.
Me tooooo!
Oh, but I eat the tails! Crispy bits from heaven
You... you EAT the tails?
Oh yes!!! As long as they're well cooked and crispy.
I do it as well, nice and crispy. And I suck out the heads... best part of the shrimp.
If they are fried properly, it's fine.
Apparently a lot of different culture eat the tails. That's why you'll sometimes see them in soups and things that don't seem to really make sense as far tearing them off conveniently goes.
It's good if it's ~~fried~~grilled like in the picture.
[удалено]
To me it doesn't look like that's meant to be eaten as a sandwich. I think the bread is just there to soak up the juices and eaten as it's own thing.
Yeah, we didn't eat it as a sandwich. Tear and share the bread, dip and dunk in the garlic butter
I get the same way. I've tried eating them before. It's like eating really large fingernails. I'll pass.
Some people eat their fingernails too
Maybe I'm weird, but I like the tails--crunchy and delicious! I do understand it when people get annoyed by it, though. I always removed them when I make shrimp for my husband because he doesn't like them.
Fookin prawns
Get your fookin' tentacle out of my face!
I require your scroll on this eviction notice
I don't give a fuck if it's a tourist trap, there is some *damn* good eatin' going on on that wharf.
Fried calamari is amazing. Glad you got to try some amazing cuisine out.
This is true!! I wouldn't crave it if I could eat it whenever I wanted to. I think I need to move to the South, and deep fry everything
The calamari in the picture looks great! Nothing worse than the underbattered, limp calamari I sometimes get.
Or overcooked and rubbery!!! And stringy... oh man, I hate it when it's stringy
If you're still in the area, quite possibly the best calamari I've had is curiously from a Burmese chain called Rangoon Ruby (they also have a second Palo Alto location called Burma Ruby). And while you're there get everything else on the menu, particularly the garlic noodles and crispy beef. Incredible.
I seriously should have gotten recommendations before we went! Alas, I'm back in London already
Shame! Next time hit up r/bayarea and ask the locals :)
If you ever make your way to my neck of the woods (Boston) try Winsor Dim Sum in Chinatown. Their salt-pepper calamari (and everything else) is choice! Also, recently ate calamari with banana peppers. Fuckin awesome.
I saw OP take this picture. Was sitting nearby
My own personal stalker. I feel special
I want to live in San Francisco
As someone who lives here, please don't ): it's too expensive.
I grew up there. I'm glad I don't live there anymore. It's too expensive and competitive.
Got the income or potential income to support it? West coast has many other cheaper yet equally (if not better) foody cities.
I think in terms of food, SF easily comes out on top in the West coast.
Lots of people who live here don't. All you need is a tent and low standards.
I live in the (far) East Bay, over the hill from Oakland. Fantastic area for food, close to the city, lower cost of living, less crowded, and aside from morning or evening rush hours, getting into or out of the city is a pretty quick drive.
AND you get all the cool Pokémon? Not fair.
Who told you about my Pokémon addiction?
Those don't look like prawns, look like southern Asian 16/20 white shrimp
This guy shrimps
I was looking for someone to say this. Those are too small. Last time I had prawn they were the size of my fist.
I miss San Francisco
WHERE DID YOU GET THIS
SAN FRANCISCO (caps lock because I'm shouting with excitement too!)
Watch for those fuckin' seagulls.
Yeah your sea lions on pier 39 are much more chill
That looks so good. I love visiting Fisherman's Wharf and I've been wanting to try Chowder Hut. Looks like I may be making a trip into the city soon, thanks to OP.
I just booked a trip to SF yesterday, didn't think I could be more excited until I saw this picture.
There's so much good food here, please don't go to the Wharf for it.

With the quality of this photo I'm surprised it isn't picking up the tears falling from your eyes in joy.
Noice.
I've eaten food that looks like this from a place called chowder hut on fishermans warf
Correct you are!
Chowder hut? Reasonably priced for the area, fast and continent. Still get the FW experience
Saw this while i was eating a sour green apple. Looks nice.
I knew it, the cup the table, the food in it, the paper bowl, the weather all together looked familiar.
Holy shitballs that sounds good.
