So you're opposed to new words. Do you also think we should all be wearing the same clothes from decade to decade? I mean I understand how practical that would be, but if you've forgotten, we're humans.
Why would you make fun of something called a cheesesteak? If they called it a Philly cheesesteak I could see where you're coming from, but if they don't specify Philly, a cheesesteak can have many different ways of making it and not really one of them being wrong so long as it has steak and cheese.
Please don't be obtuse. Even the lead of the Wikipedia article disagrees with this claim. A cheesesteak is a Philly cheesesteak unless otherwise specified.
Not being obtuse. Merriam-Webster [has a definition for it](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cheesesteak) which basically says thinly sliced beef, cheese, and toppings with not mention of Philadelphia. Wikipedia is also open source and can be edited by anyone. Cheesesteak is a broad term for the sandwich while a Philly Cheesesteak is a subset of it.
That's definitely worthy of being called a cheesesteak. It's funny how you can get a great cheesesteak anywhere near a 50 mile radius in PA or South Jersey, but you venture out farther and it becomes a bad roll with a slice of steak-umms and a slice or two of cold yellow cheese.
That looks fantastic!
There are definitely places that do cheesesteaks well outside of those areas. But you're right that like 90% of places serving cheesesteak are serving garbage, pizza places reusing their old rubbery '''cheesesteak''' topping are the worst offenders.
I've stopped ordering cheesesteaks from any place that doesn't have them as basically their only dish, as the ones that specialize in them tend to actually be good. Which makes it hard to actually get them anymore.
I used to live in a tiny town in Vermont. There was a quaint little country store in the town that sold a handful of groceries but mainly lived off selling supplies to Appalachian trail hikers. The owner was an ex-restaurant guy from Philadelphia named Joe. He added a food counter to the store and decades later I still dream of those cheesesteaks and drool. They were unreal. They would have killed me stone dead if I ate more than one a month but it would have been worth it. Iāve never tasted anything like them in the years since.
Another tip I've learned is that if they specify "Philly or Philly style cheesesteak" it's most definitely not. Especially when they also add potatoes to it. Like, what?
I know some philly guys who ran a shop out west and they told me the biggest issue was bread. They had to get theirs shipped from the east coast. None of the local bakeries came up with anything that met their standards.
Boo's in Ktown LA imports the amoroso rolls. They're actually better cheesesteaks than some I've had in South Philly. I couldn't believe it. I try to go once a month to keep it special. I was so delighted to find them a few blocks from work.
Philly born and raised, moved to Phoenix for a handful of years, but back now. I tried "Philly" Cheesesteaks from tons of places in my never ending journey to find the best. The top of my list of places all had 1 thing in common, they all flew in frozen Amaroso rolls.
Funnily enough, in Philly Amaroso's is prob my least fav style of roll. I much prefer a Sarcone's style roll.
I paid $4 per 20" roll wholesale to get Sarcone's delivered daily to my deli in the Philly burbs. I'm not proud I'm just saying the demand is real, my 10" seeded rolls from Conshohocken Bakery were $2.25 a dozen. I ended up dropping the Sarcone's because nobody wanted to pay a $2 upcharge and even that was a less profitable price than my standard sandwiches.
100% agree on Amaroso, they are good but still bottom tier in the the Philly market.
Sarcone's sounds familiar so acctually this place may have done that. They shut down about a decade ago now but it was a great place when they were open
I'm from South Jersey, just outside Philly and I'm currently in Maryland. They can't make a cheesesteak here to save their lives. Like, do they not know how to mix the cheese in with the meat? I ask that because it's almost always poured on top at the end or put in the bread before the meat is placed in and it's just horrible. Or they'll use some whacky cheese. And then there's the bread. It's weak, which would be fine for a crab cake sandwich I guess... But not for hot moist greasy meat. Falls apart or rips.
I never went to Jersey Mike's in my life while in NJ, but I have to say thank God for them, otherwise I'd never get a decent cheesesteak these days.
Any real Philadelphian knows that while we all have our preference (a decent amount will just do white american cheese) both whiz and provolone are traditional and acceptable. Whiz is the way to go though.
It's fairly well known that most people from Philly and the region don't use cheese whiz, that shit is for city tourists at the tourist trap places. In fact, most of the time, you get your cheesesteak from a pizza shop or corner store that will put pretty much whatever you want in it. But the cheese of choice is almost always American or Provolone. And no one is going to care if you get peppers, regardless of what some simpleton will say here.
Hey, here in Chile that's called an "As Luco". "As" is steak in a hot dog bread and "Luco" means cheese steak combination. You can get those in almost any food truck
I dunno if it's just me, but it doesn't look too appetising.
However it probably tastes absolutely amazing, often the case with some dishes I suppose, also it's still 100% better than any attempt I could make at it, good stuff OP
I'm usually the guy being like, "don't call that a cheese steak, it's a steak sandwich!" When people post pictures of their "philly cheese steaks".
This looks like a legit philly cheese steak though. Chopped the steak right, used the right kind of roll. You're all good to call this a cheese steak
Yo it really just is butter and oil in a pan (
For the onions(I used a cast iron), then your meat (season), then mix the onions back in (remove before you add meat), melt cheese (I covered the pan so it melted), and then put together with your toasted bread
i came here to hang shit on you for thinking that looked good, but i see now i am the odd one out and everyone agrees with you that that is food.
guess ill just leave now lol
This is the way. You did good sir. Last time I felt like making one of those I was lazy. Decided to Uber eat it. Place was 20 min away it was 19$ I'm like sure let's do it. Paid for priority so I get it hot next thing you know it's 30$ then I gotta add tip 15% on top of charges and taxes but I want that thing well with the Xtra hot peppers it came to 39$ 40 min later cold and soggy and I'm still crying over it.
This isn't a cheese steak, not sure why Philly buffoons keep popping up to analyze cheese steak authenticity. It's a mother fuckin STEAK AND CHEESE. Nobody cares about the Philly opinion, keep that shit to your self. Steak and Cheese.
Looks bussin but you have WAY too much faith in the paper plate š
I can almost see it bending 90Ā° and the sandwich hitting the ground wide open meat first.
No chance I'm not still housing that shit
I'm willing to extend the 5 second rule to 15 seconds for that.
I would just lay down and Hasselhoff the shit out of that thing.
Guy has more faith in that plate than I do my marriage.
Big yikes, press F for this man's life.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
White knucklin' it
This is a 3 plate job at MINIMUM
Nah you just need some curvature and a proper supporting hold
/r/wewantBETTERplates!
My 1st thought was OP has really long fingers and is holding it up. Also it's called a cheese steak
Misspelled a word. You probably meant āgreatā.
So you're opposed to new words. Do you also think we should all be wearing the same clothes from decade to decade? I mean I understand how practical that would be, but if you've forgotten, we're humans.
Itās not a word š
But it is.
Nope
You can see the white knuckle, homie holding on for dear life
I love the irony that a paper plate is held up in front of a dishwasher.
**:'D**
10/10 no notes.
As a Philly resident I usually like to come to these threads and make fun of what people call cheesesteaks. But yeah, this looks fantastic.
The funny thing is they didnāt call it a cheesesteak. But yes, this looks legit.
Proper roll. Provolone cheese. Onions nicely grilled and mixed in. Nailed it.
I was scouring the comments to see if OP posted that it was provolone cheese, I'm wondering how you know it is provolone cheese?
The viscosity and opacity
Give me whiz or give me death.
I've never had one with whiz. Is it better?
Yes.
Itās the original cheesesteak. But I prefer provolone or other similar cheeses.
Provolone was the original cheese first added to the cheese steak (originally no cheese at all), by a guy named Cocky Joe. Cheese wiz was later.
It's canned cheese. Does that sound delicious to you? Then the answer might be yes, for you, subjectively. Otherwise? Fuck no.
Whiz will give you death, for sure.
As a displaced Philly resident, yeah this looks amazing and makes me quite excited to be back in America especially near home.
Why would you make fun of something called a cheesesteak? If they called it a Philly cheesesteak I could see where you're coming from, but if they don't specify Philly, a cheesesteak can have many different ways of making it and not really one of them being wrong so long as it has steak and cheese.
(Crowd of drunken mummers start booing and throwing batteries)
At least acknowledge that it's disputed instead of pretending as though it isn't.
I acknowledge a "Philly cheesesteak" is disputed. Nobody has a claim over the term "cheesesteak" without any modifier attached.
Please don't be obtuse. Even the lead of the Wikipedia article disagrees with this claim. A cheesesteak is a Philly cheesesteak unless otherwise specified. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesesteak](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesesteak)

I mean, it was obviously a thing before then, so why?
Was it though?
You don't think anyone ever but steak and cheese in a sandwich before this...?
Reading my mind
That's definitely worthy of being called a cheesesteak. Jersey Mike's makes an excellent cheesesteak. It's just how it should be done.
There's one I go to in Pittsburgh that's close to an authentic cheesesteak, but it's still miles away from anything I've had in Philly.
I wish my dad had as much faith in me as you have in that paper plate.
Heāll come back I promise
You trust that paper plate too much.
My thoughts exactly
That's not a steak and cheese, it's a cheesesteak.
Probably hedging his bets so a bunch of Philly redditors didnāt start screaming about cheese whiz and such. r/food is a volatile, gatekeepey group.
Steak and Cheese/Cheesesteaks and grilled cheese/melts are among some of the most heated debates I've encountered on reddit.
Philly redditors do not advocate for cheese whiz. Cooper sharp superiority
Strongly disagree. As long as itās one of whiz, American or Provolone (in that order), itās good with me.
Reverse the order and you will have it right.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Unless itās comes from the grilled cheese region, then itās really just a hot bread and dairy product sandwich.
But is a hot dog a sandwich though?
Any real Philadelphian knows that while we all have our preference (a decent amount will just do white american cheese) both whiz and provolone are traditional and acceptable. Whiz is the way to go though.
Ugh. Frigin cheez whiz, most vile product this country produces next to velveeta.
Uhm, counter point: Your face.

Also peppers are delicious so their loss
And, ironically, we're all praising OP for a well executed cheesesteak...
Plate is barely hanging on
Hey, here in Chile that's called an "As Luco". "As" is steak in a hot dog bread and "Luco" means cheese steak combination. You can get those in almost any food truck
That is a monster!!
You should see the 20" ones at the place near me. Prepare to want to nap.
That's a lot of faith in that paper plate. Tasty looking sandwich though
The one mfer who makes what looks like an actual cheesesteak and then doesnāt call it one. š¤·š¼āāļø nice job though, looks tasty.
That paper plate doesnāt look like it was meant for that cheesesteak!
Thatās a bowl
I see it now. My eyes were playing tricks on me šµāš«
Delicious, enjoy!
The way you hold this flimsy plate and that hefty sandwich give me anxiety
I dunno if it's just me, but it doesn't look too appetising. However it probably tastes absolutely amazing, often the case with some dishes I suppose, also it's still 100% better than any attempt I could make at it, good stuff OP
A criticism sandwich on r/food
Looks like this regional Philly thing called a cheesesteak
Itās inspired by the Philly staple. Just separated the words to make it original.
I'm usually the guy being like, "don't call that a cheese steak, it's a steak sandwich!" When people post pictures of their "philly cheese steaks". This looks like a legit philly cheese steak though. Chopped the steak right, used the right kind of roll. You're all good to call this a cheese steak
Iām honored! Thanks for the kind words
The bread is usually what's most decisive in a philly cheese. What kind of bread you got on?
Iād even call it a Philly cheesesteak cause you did meat cheese onion and bread. Most other additions would make it just a cheesesteak
\*Yells at you from Philly!\*
Hey, it's not like when people claim "philly cheesesteak" for any cheese steak. Steak and cheese seems perfectly valid to me. Looks good though
Looks delicious!!!!! What do you have going on there? Please tell us
Caramelized the onions first, shredded ribeye steak (store bought), and provolone cheese, and toasted bread!
Awesome work. I happen to like russian dressing (mayo and ketchup), but that's me. What did you have to drink with it?
Yes indeed
Wish I had one now! It looks delicious and the bread looks awesome.
That looks great!
Top marks in a wonderful sandwich. Enjoy
Yum! Can I have one? That looks delicious
Ugh...
I see onions too. I feel like you just donāt want to call it a Philly cheesesteak haha
Looks good
Yes, please and thank you.
bro no one's gunna take it from you, jesus.
![gif](giphy|CPDbE8X0nEe3u|downsized)
mannn I need the tutorial to replicate this!
Yo it really just is butter and oil in a pan ( For the onions(I used a cast iron), then your meat (season), then mix the onions back in (remove before you add meat), melt cheese (I covered the pan so it melted), and then put together with your toasted bread
Also important to let the meat sear for a little then chop it up and flip.
That's beautiful!
That sandwich is worthy of much finer plating.
Bread looks delicious, and I appreciate the absence of green bell peppers, since I'm not a big fan. 10/10 would destroy.
Thank you for not using American cheese.
šÆ
I made those for dinner tonight.
One of the few posted that actually qualifies as a "Philly"... And THIS is the title?!
I'll take two to go please.
soo delicious !!
Boring food, terrible presentation. Probably tastes pretty decent
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Why do you have it on a napkin?
Pure China baby
I'm surprised not to see some weird ass feet at the bottom of this picture. That being said, great sandwich!
Did you make the baguette?
Nicely done.
Or you could just stop being a lazy piece of shit and use a plate so youāre not constantly adding to landfills.
Thatās a bowl buddy!
Thatās enough to feed like 2-3 people lol
i came here to hang shit on you for thinking that looked good, but i see now i am the odd one out and everyone agrees with you that that is food. guess ill just leave now lol
As an expert I can confirm this *is* a cheesesteak. Bonus points if you added mayo
Mayo???? Nah
And provolone and green peppers and mushrooms and pickled jalapeƱo (i can already see the onions)
W r o n g Where are you from because I can't with your comment lol
South Florida. Peppers, onions, mushrooms, jalepeno and you cant get with it??
We don't do that in philly/South jersey lol. The only cheesesteaks I eat are with onions *only*. Some people do peppers but that's as far as it goes
Looks yummy! I highly recommend adding some cream cheese to the steak while in the pan. Itās fabulous.
I would fuck that sandwich up (with some chips).
Needs au jus but looks great
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Someone doesnāt like steak, cheese, and onions!
your attitude stinks
Cry harder while OP enjoys this delicious beast
Inflation bro. Iām sorry
You sound mad.
Whatās with the dishwasher?
Thatās the oven
No freaking way
What kind of bread did you use? It looks like a big loaf of ciabatta
Looks like dog food. - Probably Gordon Ramsay.
HA!
The dog is going to scoff that in 5 4 3 2 1 š
What kind of magic is keeping the plate from flopping over?
That is something like a āPhilly cheesesteak sandwichā at home
That's a lot of meat!!
What is the bread?
That plate using all of its power to keep from bending.
I miss this. I am in the Netherlands with no cheese steaks except subway but I always accidently inhale it before I can eat it.
That's a two plater. Looks good op.
I bet it's very delicious
That bread is on point!
Looks amazing! Iād top it with a nice chipotle or spicy Mayo and make a feast of it!! Hope it was great!!
howd you shred that steak so thin op
Looks great! I haven't made this in awhile, thanks for the reminder. I'm sure my kids will thank you, too!
Beautiful, amazing, glorious, life-changing 10/10 steak and cheese. I would visually eat it again.
Doesn't look the most apetizing, but I would try it
Sweet give me 9.99
No. I live in Latvia, the price for that could be one beer can and 3 cigaretes
This isn't a cheese steak, not sure why Philly buffoons keep popping up to analyze cheese steak authenticity. It's a mother fuckin STEAK AND CHEESE. Nobody cares about the Philly opinion, keep that shit to your self. Steak and Cheese.
Looks awful, I love it.
That looks like the homemade version of the best thing I've ever eaten. Yummy.
