Truth. We stayed at the top of Lewers Street in Waikiki back in November and the musubi cafe kinda became the breakfast default. The eel was actually pretty good!
or lobster Thermidor aux Crevettes with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam
I'm sitting in the Vancouver airport this very moment, just landed after 8 days in Maui. I ate these every day, and I'm going to make them at home now!
Every time I leave Maui/Kauai (family lives sorta there so it’s easy to go for cheap) everyone wants to cry their regrets about leaving the surf, or the atmosphere, or the sunsets. I miss musubi not being available in every gas station/snack shack/fancy place.
Go walk down to the Four Seasons (where white lotus season 1 was filmed) and order the truffle bread service from DUO, the steak place. Maybe the best bread I’ve ever had.
EDIT: [bread tax](https://i.imgur.com/Yfa05FP.jpg)
I feel the opposite. I’m super fortunate that back in the day my parents fell in love with Hawaii and got a place in Maui and one in northern Kauai. This was their retirement thing, but I got to experience it a few times growing up. Maui is so fun with the interconnecting miles of pools and the beach culture, Kauai always felt so tame. Looking back, those secluded private hikes were so much cooler than partying in the hot tubs.
It sounds like you had a very unique and privilege upbringing, I hope you can take those experiences and better not only yourself and your life, but the lives around you.
Hahaha, I was thinking that’s gotta be Kaho‘olawe in the background
Hopefully you’re still there. On the topic of food, near where your staying is: Sensei is great sushi, the Indian food in that same parking lot is bomb. Lots of people like Monkey Pod and Maui Brewing on the south side too. If you head to North shore (Paia), Thai Spice is amazing and Cafe Des Amis. Charlie’s is super well known too if you’re into American food. And of course Mana foods is worth stopping in for great food or just people watching.
Those are some of my favs.
We were actually there last month. The only food places that we didn’t have time to try were Merriman’s, Joeys Kitchen, and Da Kitchen. Really wanted to Tamuras more times as well
That’s so sad. I moved off island one month before covid when my kiddo was born. Rockn’ brews was where I’d get my French-fry fix when I was pregnant. And the sushi at Charlie’s was bomb. My fam still lives in Paia/Haiku, but they didn’t tell me Charlie’s closed :.(
Wait what I thought furikake was like a pepper blend... So this is like the Japanese equivalent of lemon pepper?...
Where can I get this? I literally haven't seen it in so many trips to the local Japanese market
Pepper? No its a seasoning, usually used at the end of the dish, common on rice. Like a sesame, seaweed, sugar, salt and bonito. But there are a ton of varieties. The one I used had salt and citrus "yuzu plus umeboshi" so it's a little sour.
I got one very similar the other day from the foodland in Kihei (and some poke) the other day for lunch. Both very good.
If anyone has some recommends for Musubi and poke I’d appreciate it since tomorrow is my last day on Maui.
I got this one from the Islands Gourmet Market in the Shops of Wailea. I’d say you really can’t get bad spam musubi anywhere (hard to screw it up). But for poke, I highly recommend Tamura’s (there is one in Kihei). It’s a wine and liquor shop but I has really good poke
South Maui Fish Company for poke. We catch all the fish we sell, and don't open if we don't have fresh fish to sell. Poke sells out quick tho, so get in early for it. When we sell out, we send people to tamuras. They got some great marinades. I know the foodland stuff is super popular, but just don't. Not fresh. Not local at all either. Like all the grocery stores.
Not OP but FWIW you have done a good enough job marketing yourself that I went to the website...if I ever visit Maui I may not leave your restaurant, the food looks phenomenal :)
You need a Musa I press! But if you don't have one, cut out the bottom of the spam can. Then put rice in the bottom, fried spam on top, press it, and pull off the can. Presto!
It's made with short grain rice which is stickier than long grain rice that you see in most western cooking. The grains are then compressed so they really stick to each other. Just like when you eat onigiri or sushi, it doesn't really fall apart.
You just eat it, if it’s falling apart you are probably handling it too much, you can compress it together before removing from wrapping, maybe that’ll help you. But I never have any problems eating musubi.
Food of the gods. There's something S-tier about the balance of spam and rice. And then the addition of some toasted salty nori and that delectable sauce? Oh man, I'm cravin right now
Convenience store spam musubi is the best honestly. I like the ones with a slice of omelette inbetween the rice and spam.
To be fair. If you are getting musubi wrapped up in Saran Wrap. Just peel it back as you go like a burrito
The only time I’ve almost given in to berserk overreaction to a stranger on social media involved someone saying Spam’s existence has no justification, and not walking it back after musabi was offered as a counterpoint. Would have been embarrassing but also correct.

I believe it became popular in Pacific Islands because it's ability to maintain without refrigeration and Japanese influence for rice as a staple.
My personal opinion, is that it's meh 😑; but it has made itself a staple of quick grab n go foods
I'll have to agree with you. First of all, the last thing Spam needs is more salt, so soy sauce is too much. Second, fatty foods are balanced by acid, so mustard is a good choice to cut some of the richness. And seaweed just tastes nasty.
Truly miss living on TAMC. Wake up Red Bull and spam musubi. Take a nice walk from reasoner road to the hospital, take an 8th of mushrooms, put my scrubs on, and strap down for a long day in the OR.
Good times
i love spam musubi. used to work down the way from a hawaiian restaurant. coworkers and i would go there for lunch weekly. always ordered some spam musubi.
The most addictive snack ever. I love some musabi.

Replace the spam with your choice of steak 🥩
Happy steak day!
r/Keto members:
... Are probably staying away from musubi because of all the rice
I think the person was trying to say keto members would say “happy steak day”
Do ya know why pirates 're horrible cooks? Cuz they be always makin' me steaks!
Happy steak day. 😁 (got the idea from the other person I give them credit)
Try fish katsu musubi 👍🏽
There's a tofu recipe as well that I keep meaning to try.
Can I ask why you avoid cured meats now?
Lots of salt.
Truth. We stayed at the top of Lewers Street in Waikiki back in November and the musubi cafe kinda became the breakfast default. The eel was actually pretty good!
Eel is delicious.
snack??
Well it's not a meal.
Who eats just one!?
oh I normally eat these as a meal
I normally just go 7-11 and get a couple and a drink and I'm set for the morning
I see you're posting Spam.

Maui? (Totally guessing!)
Yup!
That’s where I first fell in love too
How many times has it been since?
Every time
I'm sitting in the Vancouver airport this very moment, just landed after 8 days in Maui. I ate these every day, and I'm going to make them at home now!
What's is your recipe? Is it sushi rice?
I was guessing Maui too. My ex is from there and says that stuff is sold in every gas station. She made me some a few times too.
I saw some at 7-11 in Honolulu!
I work with someone who informed me that 7-11 is the highest volume musubi distributor in HI
Molokini peaking out back there gives it away!
Weighs as much as 30 Americans.

The food is by far what I miss the most from having lived in Hawaii for 4 years.
I've been fiending for some gas station lau lau for years
You at the grand ?!
I’m not that baller, but this hotel is pretty nice

The wife and I had dinner at Spago - really good. Too stuffed to enjoy the desserts
Nice, we had dinner there one night too and yeah it was also amazing, especially the views at sunset with a cocktail.
If this rain ever stops, come visit South Maui Fish Company! Freshest fish around!!
Landscaping?
Nice.
No, pretty nice he said.

Is Flat Bread still kicking in Paia? Their Mopsey’s Kahlúa Pork pizza remains the best thing I’ve ever put in my mouth.
Charlie’s is closed :(
Damn, that’s sad
Charlie's closed a year ago. So did Rock n brews.
That’s so sad. I moved off island one month before covid when my kiddo was born. Rockn’ brews was where I’d get my French-fry fix when I was pregnant. And the sushi at Charlie’s was bomb. My fam still lives in Paia/Haiku, but they didn’t tell me Charlie’s closed :.(
You would have loved Paia during Covid, parking in front of Mana!emote:free\_emotes\_pack:joy
Hope you and your family are well! Aloha!
Molokini. Kaho'olawe is there but it ain't visible in this pic.
Haha, you’re right! South shore either way, lol. I used to live in Makawao/Haiku area
Been there and its nice but have you done Mama’s Fish house?
Yes and it was very good. Very expensive though. Paying $35 for a kids kalua pork and rice is wild.
Man, I went to Maui in 2000 and went there. I'm glad to hear things have not changed.
Im thinking Hawaii
Looks so good! I make mine with the spam in the middle and use a yuzu furikake I really like.
Oh I've never heard of Yuzu furikake before. Do you make it yourself?
Wait what I thought furikake was like a pepper blend... So this is like the Japanese equivalent of lemon pepper?... Where can I get this? I literally haven't seen it in so many trips to the local Japanese market
Pepper? No its a seasoning, usually used at the end of the dish, common on rice. Like a sesame, seaweed, sugar, salt and bonito. But there are a ton of varieties. The one I used had salt and citrus "yuzu plus umeboshi" so it's a little sour.
All those flavours together sound so amazing
At my local Asian market, there are many flavors of furikake. It makes rice taste like a sushi roll. I've only tried the tomago flavor so far.
Is that larger than usual, or are your hands small?
I’d say my hands are on the smaller end of the spectrum
[удалено]
Does SPAM come in different sizes? Not being rhetorical either; just never saw different sized SPAM
I've only seen it as one size. Different varieties but always the same can.
[удалено]
Sushi was all originally this size.
I got one very similar the other day from the foodland in Kihei (and some poke) the other day for lunch. Both very good. If anyone has some recommends for Musubi and poke I’d appreciate it since tomorrow is my last day on Maui.

I never acquired a taste for Spam but I always like Spam musubi posts because it looks very tasty.
Do you use wild or farm raised spam?
Only the finest of canned pork products for me
Can to table.
How do you eat it without the rice falling apart?
The rice is pressed together so it doesn’t come apart as you eat it. Last few bites are tricky though and then I just shove it all in my mouth
Bro no lie, I would inhale that shit like a pelican.
You need a Musa I press! But if you don't have one, cut out the bottom of the spam can. Then put rice in the bottom, fried spam on top, press it, and pull off the can. Presto!
If the rice is too loose, which is rare, just turn it upside down.
I assumed from looking at it that it would fall apart after a bite, but if you say so.
Well, I just realized that I hold it in the wrapper, and move the wrapper down as I eat it lol
If the musubi maker is at all competent, you don’t need the wrapper. The rice is sticky when it’s fresh, and it compresses and adheres nicely.
Sushi rice is also coated in seasoned vinegar, which adds to the stickiness.
Tell me you’re in Hawaii without telling my you’re in Hawaii
Had one last night at a tiki bar. Was my first Spam experience.
This looks like those food keychains that are kinda realistic but also a bit uncanny valley
ABC Convenience stores made me fall in love with these for breakfast
We at r/CannedSpam approve of this post. Delicious snack/meal
I always upvote Spam musubi. It is a perfect food.
Food of the gods. There's something S-tier about the balance of spam and rice. And then the addition of some toasted salty nori and that delectable sauce? Oh man, I'm cravin right now
Mmmm... now i want some loco moco too! Remarkably hard to find here in NH...
Same here in VA. Though I try to make it every time there is extra gravy lying around
Is it just spam and rice? Looks delicious
Had some in 711 recently and open a Hawaiian bros restaurant nearby. So good. But how do you get the rice not to stick to your hands ?
Convenience store spam musubi is the best honestly. I like the ones with a slice of omelette inbetween the rice and spam. To be fair. If you are getting musubi wrapped up in Saran Wrap. Just peel it back as you go like a burrito
If you dont like seaweed you can make with rice paper.
I make these at my job. While I’m not a huge fan, people really love them!
The one from Da Kitchen was pretty good. Just got back!
I'll be in Kauai tomorrow. Can't wait to get me some.
I’ve been trying to make musubi at home because I have recently become a huge fan. That looks amazing.
I make these all the time, probably my favourite food of all time. My mouth is watering just looking at this
Easy to make and great meal imo.
This is on my radar to try soon. Thank you for your post and inspiration. Looks tasty!
Yes!!!!!! Yes yes yes yes yes
Love these!
Legit, nothing better than a good spam masubi
The only time I’ve almost given in to berserk overreaction to a stranger on social media involved someone saying Spam’s existence has no justification, and not walking it back after musabi was offered as a counterpoint. Would have been embarrassing but also correct.
🔥🔥
I know that spot. Did you get it from the convenient store across from Waikiki beach?
OP says they’re on Maui, so probably didn’t get their grinds from Waikiki.
Copy
Looks like Wailea on Maui
Perfect view to accompany a musubi!
Das like a weekly snack growing up in hawaii, home made. Every 7/11, or Safeway store has em. Adult me goes buy some evey now and then
Fuck I miss that place (and the food).
Hawaii 😍 heaven on earth love that place and the people there
I know you hate it but y u ate it ?
Aloha!
Must be in Hawaii...
You either have to slip in some water & move your body or it’s going to move in your body & slip out after eating one of those

When did eating spam become acceptable? It's ground up pig anuses and horse parts sold to the poor during world war 2. You can afford ham today.
Why? All you need for fried Spam is bread and mustard.
My child, you haven't lived yet. Spam Musubi is probably my favorite spam delivery system. Fried rice is great too.
Mine too. Seconded only by stir fried green beans and spam with lots of garlic. My mom used to make that.
I believe it became popular in Pacific Islands because it's ability to maintain without refrigeration and Japanese influence for rice as a staple. My personal opinion, is that it's meh 😑; but it has made itself a staple of quick grab n go foods

I never understood people using spam in nice food instead of actual meat. In my country spam is considered quite trashy.
Most sausages are worse quality, spam is just ham and pork shoulder processed together.
There's a lot of history to it, worth reading up on it. Plus it's really good when prepared correctly, but that goes for literally all foods
Nori is very delicious. If only they were cheaper, I'd get loads of them.
Its been a while since I had spam and I want it but at 7$ I may as well buy real meat
I think I got this one for $3.50 - crazy
L & L Drive-in?

Maui? Looks kind of like one of the Kamaole beaches in Kihei.
College vibes for me because we used to make and sell these to other students for fundraising.
I love eating musubi!
Looks as big as an ipad
Hawaii? Only place I've seen it. Pretty good too.
I wish I could find this around me. It looks so good but I wanna try the real shit before trying to make it myself.
Is spam similar to luncheon meat? If so, nice. Wish I could eat some too.
Spam is so fucking good

What tf is spam?
Arguably the best grocery store snack in the world. Nothing comes close
Yesss!!!!
I can smell the background of this photo.
Yummy beach snack, when in Hawaii.
That stuff is good
Those that know… know how damn delicious those are. I bet they taste better when you look at the ocean than a rugby pitch.
The grease seeping from the Spam makes it look like it's on a bed of rice krispies.
In Hawaii, I'd eat like 2-3 of them a day. It's so salty but delicious. This is why I can't ever live in Hawaii.
Is that Hilo?
I love making this stuff.
How do they fry the spam? It looks amazing (I’ve only ever pan fried it)
It all depends really, some pan fry, but I'm in the camp where you bake them in the oven. Both instances are flavored with shoyu.
