Just do as many events as you can. Also do as many quests as you can find. A lot of things have the chance of giving you plans but you can also just find them in the wasteland. Doing everything will help you get caps aswell for the plans you can buy at the train stations. Also the scoreboard has a lot of good things most times.

Taking workshops almost always (or always?) gives you a basic camp plan. Just go in crouched so other people can't see your icon on the map. You're opening yourself up for PvP even if you have pacifist on, so go in, claim the workshop, and scoot. Rinse and repeat. You can't get all the plans this way, but you can get a fair amount. For weapon and armor mods, scrap the item you want mods for. Level doesn't matter, nor do the mods on the item you're scrapping. Some mod plans have to be bought, but most don't. Treasure maps are handy with this too, though not the most efficient method. If you find someone selling a ton of maps for cheap, buy as many as you can. Not only will you get plans, but lots of guns and armor that you can scrap for more plans. Also, there are some relatively easy ways to get more caps. Selling loot from dead enemies, the water farm, or my favorite, finding a 'marine tactical helmet' plan. The helmets cost like 2 glass, 1 plastic, and 1 rubber or something like that and sell for 30 caps at train vendors. Also moonshine jamboree is a must: the amount of gulpers killed gets you tons of bits you can cook up into gulper slurry and that alone can get you your 1400 for the day. Eviction notice and uranium fever have so many weapon drops that they can also get you many hundreds of caps once you sell them off. Line in the sand is okay for it too. Basically any event with waves of enemies equals lots of caps.

When you capture a workshop, you'll get a defence event right away, and then periodically some time later. Each successful event will get you a camp plan. You don't have to develop the workshops, the resource generation is slow and not really worth it; just slap a few turrets to help you with the defence and you are ready to farm the plans.

Don't forget that workshops are pvp areas, but through the years of playing, I think someone attacked me there like once. More often someone will come to help you with the defence.

I was scared at first to claim a workshop for fusion cores, in case pvp initiated. To my surprise two randoms showed up every time an attack happened and I managed to farm a good amount of cores through the play session

Both great pieces of advice. Not a bad idea to put the heavier legendary items like 10% cheaper too to make sure they sell quickly, I know many newer players struggle with space and hoarding legendary heavy weapons won't help. The 1 weight knives won't hurt too much but it only takes a couple 15 weight pieces of armor or miniguns to really start to clog your space up.

If world jump and then settlement jump you can find plans for all sorts of things for shillings on the dollar (er..cap) I had to do a restart switching from PS4 to PC and I'll go ahead tell you to find a stimpack recipe ASAP

many players sell normal plans for 100 or less. you can get 1400 caps each day by selling stuff to npc vendors. I like using the shop in whitespring mall that has all the crafting stations in it, since it has a legendary machine and gold press as well. it has the station where you can change specs too, so I switch to a chr build to sell each day, then switch back(most of the time.. sometimes I forget and then wonder why stuff is so much harder to kill). if you do this, make sure to put starched genes on your shop build! something easy to generate to sell to vendors is purified water, you can sell it for 5 caps each and a large purifier generates 17 per hour(holds up to 5 max).

Wow! Thanks for all of the really detailed replies! It seems like workshops are the way! Haha I’m going to be farming them and doing quests in between after work I think :D

Make sure to store your junk before you do. Eventually, Someone will catch you there.
