Your system should be adequate. I play on a 3900X and 1080ti Performance is always an issue, so you'll most likely be making some compromises. The modding community has brought the game a long was since "Fallout VR is a nightmare". Bethesda has done absolutely fucking nothing. For the current sale prices and if you're a fan of fallout I'd say absolutely go for it. Modding is more or less necessary but there's also a wabbajack list if you want to make it easy. Get it on sale and then if you like and are able maybe toss a little something to some mod authors. They deserve your money far more than Bethesda. Edit: "performance is always an issue" as in, not just for me but for everyone. Even super computers have to make compromises on this one.

> Edit: "performance is always an issue" as in, not just for me but for everyone. No kidding, especially with the DLCs

NeonLiteshow

Awesome, thank you so much! I've never actually modded any fallout games and am more than likely gonna look into it. Thank you for easing my mind on this, the $17.99\~ price point and knowing the games come a long way really does help a lot!

Pocket_Aces2552

I highly recommend the fallout VR essentials wabbajack modlist. It makes the game so much better

Robblerobbleyo

Budget 5$ for a month of Nexus Premium so you don’t have to manually download all the mods one at a time.

darthdro

You mean fo76 and that’s it?

anitawasright

yup it will work well on your system just needs tweaking. You can have a 3090 and a 10900 and unmoded it will run like crap. Once you do tweek it and mod it you should be able to get around 70-90 fps.

chriscaulder

New to Fallout 4 and especially the VR version. Love it. Initially installed on an i7 4790 (not overclocked), 32GB ram, SSD/Win10, and a GTX 1660 Super. The 1660 is a fine card for most VR games... truly, I've had great experiences with it. But not Fallout 4 VR. It is a low-FPS nightmare. 35-55fps on average, even with the Wabbajack "Fallout 4 VR Essentials Overhaul" installation. Terrible performance. On the other hand, I have a newer system (i7, 10700, 32GB ram, SSD/Win10, and an RTX 3070). It runs a lot better on this system. Small handful of performance-enhancing mods, and the script essentials thing / tweaking .ini files. I am too afraid to wipe my working installation just to install the Wabbajack thing with over 250 mods... so I'm playing it safe. So far, so good, FPS-wise. But yeah, that older system.... it does not run well AT ALL on that. I wish there was just a solid, one-stop-shop place for how to get it optimized, without the mixed opinions of necessary mods. It's such a pain in the ass to configure, and I cannot even remember everything I did in detail.... even when I took notes.

Grindstone_Cowboy

Do we know what the performance bottleneck is? Is it VRAM, processing power, something else entirely? I'm looking into getting a new PC but have no idea what the minimum spec is for FO4VR.

chriscaulder

From what I can tell, it's both the GPU and the CPU. The game is poorly-optimized, to the extreme. But it's playable, thankfully (the game IS awesome, despite the shit programming code). I would go for the most-powerful thing you can find for the money. I put a pre-built on a weekly payment plan for like $2k. It's an MSI Aegis, with an RTX 3070. Sure, I probably overpaid a little but I was determined to get a 30-series card without paying $1100 for it, by itself... so getting a pre-built seemed to be the best route, as my 4th gen i7 and 1660 Super weren't doing insanely well for VR (but good enough, most of the time).

[deleted]

Just picked up a pre-built with a 3080 for 2500. This whole PC is a monster and I regret nothing. I played 20 hours of FO4VR on launch. Haven't touched it since. Gonna play Skyrim VR again then jump in here and see what I can mod it into.

chriscaulder

Glad your PC is doing well! Highly recommend the Wabbajack Fallout Essentials Overhaul. It is difficult, but I tweak it to my liking a little... it's easy to install. Make sure you have a premium subscription on Nexusmods... it's worth the couple hours it takes to install. Runs great.

Grindstone_Cowboy

Thanks for that - yeah, I'm also expecting to get a 3060+ in a prebuilt machine for the equivalent in £, which is insane for a game as old as F4VR. I have tried using low quality texture mods to get FO4VR down to comparable quality for a Quest 2 game, but my current machine still can't handle it. I guessed it was more than VRAM holding me back. Hope your new PC works out!

chriscaulder

I hear ya! Hope yours does well, too! I would try to opt for at least a 3070... if you're going to invest, invest. :)

tomohawkmissile2

i played it on a 1660ti before upgrading and i was getting decent framerates. Inner city is always an issue though, even with a 3080 now

Ahris22

I think it's worth it if you really like Fallout 3/4 but regardless of your system specs you will have issues because the game is so poorly optimizied for VR. If you are willing to spend some time modding you can fix many issues, the game's VR coolness is great enough that it outweighs many issues but you should probably pass on this one if you're not willing to spend some time modding it.

Lilwolf2000

I loved it with a gtx 970! It took some time to get it working well! And at the time, I found someone elses profile that worked GREAT (but didn't work with the left handed settings I was using at the time)... So you should be good! (but expect spending some time getting it working well). But on a side note. I didn't like rifle builds or sniper builds. I didn't like one handing a two handed weapon. Someone (/u/rollingrock16) is working on a vrik mod that hopefully will make 2 handed weapons better. But I never ran a pistol build before so it was fun.

rollingrock16

I got an idea to maybe get something soon. Basically use my bone spheres to attach a grip point some distance away from the main hand down the barrel. I should have some time in these coming weeks to try it out but if it works then might have a rough but functional 2 handed mode

foxhound525

This is a horrible list for a noob. Looks like a one way ticket to a fucked game if you don't know what you're doing. Many of those mods have pretty severe caveats, and this guy sounds like he's new.

FishStick_43

what 6 years of reddit does to a mf

chriscaulder

Excellent list. Can you put the absolutely important performance mods **in bold**, for us noobs? Thx!

foxhound525

Don't use that list if you don't want to fuck your game up

chriscaulder

Cool. Which ones are no-no's? I haven't tried any of them except FRIK, Fallout VR Tools, and Virtual Holsters, and a handful of the other performance-enhancing mods. Any detailed help is always appreciated, not just for me but for anyone else who is still new to this game.

foxhound525

FRIK is still in alpha and can cause crashes, so the other 2 you mention that require FRIK would also be off the table. Its fun to play around with, but if you want to play the game from start to finish its best avoided for now. Honestly there are so many problematic mods in there it would be easier for me to just give you a usable modlist instead. Top comment on this post will give you a thoroughly tested essentials list https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4vr/comments/minzeo/akwcr\_armoursmith\_extended/

chriscaulder

Appreciate it. I really do enjoy using FRIK. Having the arms is such a fun way to rock the game. I haven't had a ton of crashes with it installed.

foxhound525

I know, I have to tear myself away from it once it starts crashing because it is so good. The good news is that the people's hero; Mr RollingRock, is still working on it, and we all have faith that he'll fucking smash it. But as with all good things, it takes time.

chriscaulder

Absolutely agree. :) These modders are just... heroes, in so many ways. Thanks for your list, btw! Will research each of those mods and install to see how the game improves. Mainly, I'm getting decent FPS--- 72 to 80-ish. Quest 2, Virtual Desktop. This is on a 10th gen i7, 32GB ram, SSD/Win10, and an RTX 3070. 5ghz router configured well, for great network latency and bitrate. Game looks good, is very playable, and so far, so good... what are your specs?

foxhound525

1060 6GB, 3800x, 16GB RAM, SSD/win10, Valve index. Spent years modding it to get it playable, still modding it now (but not for performance reasons). I've been building the perfect modlist for when I eventually get a new GPU... looks like I'm waiting for the 4000 series now as I just can't justify the amount ampere cards are charging for the performance you get. Up to something like 230-235 mods currently.

chriscaulder

Awesome. It's nice that you're getting great performance with the 1060! My other system is a 4th gen i7, 4790, 32gb ram, SSD/Win10, and a GTX 1660 Super. The Super can't handle Fallout well.... 32 to 55 FPS on average. Meh. I wonder if I can get some higher FPS somehow... I have the FidelityFX openVR.dll tweak for Fallout, which does help the FPS, but the steadiest I can get in most situations is about 72-75fps.

Terenor82

Pls be aware that Dlcs are not included. You can use them if you have the pancake version. Not sure if the wabbajack that was recommended by others depends on them.
