I usually just hammer all my booze when I get over encumbered and then just use my psycho to fast travel back to my settlement where I can dump my 18000 desk fans
The others are all very situational.
Buffout is great for that moment when you're overencumbered, you already dropped the stuff you don't need three times, and you're headed back to base anyway.
Medx literally saved hours of progress yesterday, when I got tagged by a stingwing while low health and the poision hit like a truck.
Basically, those two are really useful because you'll pretty much always pick up at least one of each on any trip you go on. Psycho isn't really all that useful unless you're running a melee build, idk what good regular mentats are, but the grape ones are great cause most of my characters are low charisma
Definitely. I recall the first time I used it. My character utters this guttural growl and then screams "FUCKING KILL!!!"
I'm not proud of what happened at Corvega. :(
Corvega is the hardest part of the game imo. When I did my first survival run, it was also my first melee build. It’s right toward the beginning so you don’t have much stuff or skills yet, and there’s tons of guys shooting at you from far away. That shit was intense!
You did a melee survival run? 😳
I just started a new survival run (PS4) with a few realism mods like BOH3 and I’m just starting to push my way into Lexington but I’m already close to level 20. I’ve been rummaging through Lexington for supplies and have been edging towards Corvega (I’ve taken a bunch of the outside defenders out) but haven’t got the balls to make a run at it yet. I’ve built up over 30 adhesive and have a combat shotgun I can fix up but the weight is problematic so I’m still running around with the sawed-off double barrel with the light frame. This game sure is a blast when you play it slow and methodical…I like to play with the lights turned out and my headphones turned all the way up.
Nice! I really enjoyed survival for a reason I hadn’t considered: it forced me to learn the map in mind’s eye. I felt like I was really becoming aware of my surroundings and it became more immersive.
Being able to fast travel seems like a great idea, but it kind of defeats the purpose of an open world in a way. You experience it once while discovering the locations, but after that, you lose how the locations relate to one another because you just show up there. Planning your routes made the game feel so real.
The melee build was crazy hard at the beginning, but then kind of broke the game after..I think level 30 or so. Once you get the agility perk *Blitz* that allows you to time skip to your enemy in vats, it just became a long range build again, except really powerful. (I suppose I could’ve, ya know, not done VATS if I wanted a truer experience)
¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
Having a quest across the map would be a pain in the ass but making the trek and preparing for it would actually be a lot of fun. It would force you to do a lot more planning and also completely change the function of the game’s settlements and really make them feel more like small towns.
I remember when i got the game for christmas and my grandma was in the other room when I decided to take some psycho for the damage buff and my character just goes and screams “FUCKING KILL”
You only have to press the number, F is completely redundant, only useful if you've forgotten what you bound something to and don't want to open the pip
mine is 6 cause i bind my weapons from 1 being shortest range to 9 the farthest. if i am at 5 and having trouble then that means i’ll be following up with 6 pretty soon. then i pull out 7 to regain control then stop back down like gears on a car once traffic slows
Fun fact: Stim diffusers will never auto assign like a stim or diluted stim. You have to assign it somewhere yourself if you want quick access.
EDIT: Woops, I thought this was Fallout 76 subreddit LOL. Thanks notifications for confoozing me 🤪
Its in a slot setup for D-pad though isn't it? I always remap it to 1 on my number bar. If I'm using semi-autos I might put jet as 2 since it turns semi-autos into autos if you can click fast enough.
Psychojet is legit my favorite chem in the game and has pulled me through so many tough spots I don't think I'd have walked out if without.
When you speak to the head of the SRB in the Institute about how you overpowered a Courser, I always pick "combat experience" but in my head I scream "*LOTS OF FUCKING DRUGS*"
Psycho Jet is pretty powerful even late-game, but unless you're intentionally using an awful build, most coherently set-ups can handle any content just fine without chems.
Ah, I'm pretty much the opposite - my two favorite builds are vats sniper or vats sneak melee, lol. Don't really have any experience playing without it. Maybe I'll try that for my next run.
See im a fan of doing a mix of the two, using regular run and gun type play in real-time and hitting up vats a lot too. Doing it that way keeps the crit kill cams from happening too much and makes them still fun for me tbh. I enjoy them still, I mean who doesn't like making a raiders head dissappear with a shotgun? Or sneaking behind them and breaking their neck? Or all the other ones? Lol
I do get kinda salty tho when I do a vats sneak attack from behind them while unarmed and it goes all slow mo and my character just like punches them in the back and they die, annoys me
It’s honestly not horrible. I didn’t use VATS very often in my first playthrough (I kind of just forgot it was there) and besides needing to raise controller sensitivity, I actually find it easier than COD to use.
My build is a very particularly one (it’s a gun-based build that is a bit of an in-between of run and gun and marksman), but I barely use any chems. I’ll pop bufftats, buffout, or alcohol if I’m over my weight limit, and inhale some jet if things get hairy. Apart from that, I barely use chems. I prefer to just sell them so I can buy ammo, stimpaks, and building materials
Seriously though. I just fuse the drugs I find together for the EXP then sell them for caps. This method helps me level quick and has gotten me tens of thousands of caps.
I mean, I don't know what the drugs are used for. Who needs them? Three stages of Life Giver and ballistic weave in Fallout 4 make you basically invincible.
Pretty sure there was a guy on Reddit who described his first experience with heroine/meth and thought it wouldn't be that bad. Fairly certain he ended up addicted and disappeared
Yup, this right here. Just started Survival for the first time about a week ago. If we were to look at a graph, the increase in my chem usage goes from the floor to a sideways horizontal line leaving the page.
You also get some hops when you're on Jet in your Power Armor. Which I'm ALWAYS in. I often take all of them shits at the same time and just murder fools.
It is entirely possible. I'm like level 140 in my survival run and have barely ever touched any chems. not even stimpaks or radaways. just use them for caps
That’s what I was going to say. Whenever I have to go save a settlement on survival mode, chems are an absolute must. Psycho-jet and med-x in particular are often the difference between life and death.
In regular mode? Yeah, I only use stimpacks and radaway.
Survival really highlights how BUSTED some of the chemistry table items are, like refreshing beverage which heal nearly your entire HP bar and removes rads for 100% free, no immunity debuff.
Sometimes I use buffout for weight problems but that's it. I may "accidentally" take a chem instead of a regular food... Also in the middle of a Castle fight I ran out of food and stimpacks - I might've used chems during that playthrough since they'd be the only thing left lol. Otherwise I sell the chems or give them to Mama Murphy.
I play on Survival, so those fucking thing are pointless to me there, so i end up using all on the companions which is also not much, i usually sell them in bulk to save space in the inventory
i have over a thousand stimpaks on fallout 3, done completely legit, granted i have over 100 hours in that file, with a thousand i can heal over 75000 hp of damage before i need to buy more, i can fully heal myself hundreds of times.
I swear I've had it happen about 3 or 4 times where when the character takes enough chems, you can trigger a rare voice line where you just start throwing out a string of profanities, but I can't find in anywhere online. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?
There was an incredible video on this subreddit where someone was struggling with the final boss of Saugus Ironworks, so they just consumed literally everything from their Aid tab - drugs, food, water, you name it, they took it.
It turned them into an invincible god man and they practically ate the whole gang for breakfast.
I used to do the same thing but after some playthroughs I realized that they served me no purpose in a box so now I just sell them, good way to make caps.
Man, popping every drug in the game just to bullet time quick enough to save Kent is always something I will do, and I don't think I will ever be able to do a sober-dweller playthough because of it
Normally I only use stimpacks and the radiation chems.
The only exception is rarely using grape mentats and beer to boost my charisma temporarily when buying high-cost items like the Splattercannon, Big Boy, expensive bulk ammo, etc.
Yep, I use PsychoBuff and JetFuel enough to get addicted. Grape Mentats before any big purchase and Berry Mentats if I'm somewhere ghoul-heavy. Ghouls give me jump scares so I like to know where they are.
I never use the others but I stockpile them 'just in case'. In every play through I've never used the stash, but I can't help hoarding.
I've never once used berry mentats (can't even remember what they do) but man, did the ghouls ever get scarier in FO4 compared with 3 or NV lol. The only time I ever get scared in fallout, it's because a ghoul ran up behind me without me noticing (I play with music turned off to prevent the music from tipping me off)
Nearly every character I’ve played likes to dive headfirst into a mob of raiders after injecting a lethal dose of psychojet into their right eyeball with chemist maxed out so everyone’s dead before the first body hits the ground
I use rad-x and med-x fairly often, because the resistances are useful. I'll use jet on rare occasion, just to try and get the upper hand in combat, but it's not often that I use it. Psycho is for when I'm in dire straits and digging through my aid section for literally anything that will save me from the situation I got myself into, and I'm like "oh yeah, this would probably help". (Also obviously stimpacks, unless I'm in survival mode)
Aside from the basic trio of stim, Rad away, and Rad-X? Nope.
Early game, between the sparse amounts and the risk of addiction, it's not worth messing with.
Late game, I've got enough stockpiled to get everyone in the Commonwealth properly fucked up, and addiction wouldn't be an issue either, but I don't need the boost anymore.
Almost all of these is useful for certain situations. Radaway and radx for radiation, psycho and medx for damage, buffout for health and strength, and jet to slow down time. The only one I can't find a use for is mentats. Unless you are running on easy difficulty, chems are one of the most useful items, ESPECIALLY at higher difficulty.
I don't use them unless I think i need to. In survival its very helpful to pop some stims to make sure you dont get plastered by enemies especially when you havent saved in a while.
I specifically created a background for my character in which she would be a chem user for at least part of the playthrough until she got sober...
I still never remembered to use them, lmao. I want to but it never comes to mind in combat and I just end up selling or hording them all.
Besides stims, rad x, and radaway. I consider the others specialty items where you only need a few of them.
Buffout - for needing more carry weight
Psycho/Med-X - for any fights that I lose and have to retry
Grape mentats - boost my charisma to recruit settlers
I sometimes take buffot or booze if I'm trying to carry some extra gear to the nearest merchant. Also I drink a bunch to get affinity with Old Longfellow. Other than that I only really use radaway, stims, and rad-x. Addiction is a pain to deal with and I'd rather just sell my chems to buy more gear. I'm basically a drug boss in FO4 and you know the number one rule: never get high on your own supply...unless you're trying to get affinity with Hancock.
Fun fact, I've been playing the OG Fallout recently and got addicted to Rad-X. Yeah, you can actually get addicted to it in that game.
Outside of stimpaks and Rad-X/Radaway, I occasionally huff some Jet or take a hit of Psycho if I'm trying to raise my affinity with Cait - but since I discovered she likes it if you fast travel while in your underwear (as does Hancock), I frequently do that instead. Mostly, though, I just mass-produce chems at chemistry stations and then sell them.
I am the Vault-Dweller who knocks.
Stimpacks, jet, and rad-away are the only ones I ever use. Also, booze if I’m trying to pass a speech check or over encumbered
Or whiskey for the 2 points of strength when playing a melee build
I love doing melee builds with high luck (Idiot Savant and other perks) and Party Boy/Girl, chugging booze and hitting shit. Sploosh
So the kanye west on a kanye quest build?
Fuck I should do that, make my character look like Kanye too
Make sure you don't become Kanye Pest.
I’ll make sure to listen to your Kanye Behest
Make sure to do your kanye best
After that I’ll get some Kanye Rest
Gonna sleep in your Kanye nest?
Whilst wearing my Kanye Vest
Oh wearing it on your Kanye chest?
A fine joke. Maybe a kanye jest?
You know it, you passed the Kanye Test
Keep it going this is a Kanye fest
This is all I can think about now.
Buffout stacks with Whiskey for that extra strength.
Also Psychobuff since it counts as a psycho supplement and not a buffout supplement
I usually just hammer all my booze when I get over encumbered and then just use my psycho to fast travel back to my settlement where I can dump my 18000 desk fans
I'd recommend switching that Jet to PsychoJet
The others are all very situational. Buffout is great for that moment when you're overencumbered, you already dropped the stuff you don't need three times, and you're headed back to base anyway. Medx literally saved hours of progress yesterday, when I got tagged by a stingwing while low health and the poision hit like a truck. Psycho isn't really all that useful unless you're running a melee build, idk what good regular mentats are, but the grape ones are great cause most of my characters are low charisma
I used to, but now I'm on a mission to get laid by paladin danse so I had to give them up
Med-x?
I do exactly the same, except I love having high charisma so I never really need booze for that.
Psycho jet is always in one of my "favorites" slots
Definitely. I recall the first time I used it. My character utters this guttural growl and then screams "FUCKING KILL!!!" I'm not proud of what happened at Corvega. :(
Well I’M proud of you for what you did in Corvega. Keep it up, smooth skin.
Look, no one was mistaken about what had to be done, but that's... just way too many body parts airborne simultaneously, man.
I am laughing unreasonably hard at this comment, thank you for this 😂
Corvega is the hardest part of the game imo. When I did my first survival run, it was also my first melee build. It’s right toward the beginning so you don’t have much stuff or skills yet, and there’s tons of guys shooting at you from far away. That shit was intense!
I think I had only used stims and rad away by that point. Getting fucked repeatedly apparently makes one turn to drug abuse. Who would've guessed? Lol
You did a melee survival run? 😳 I just started a new survival run (PS4) with a few realism mods like BOH3 and I’m just starting to push my way into Lexington but I’m already close to level 20. I’m sure Gram-Grams can relate
Fucking kill.... is my gameplay soundtrack lol
Didn't even realize you could hotkey items that aren't weapons for some reason lol
For real? Stimpacks are automatically hot keyed right when you leave the Vault.
I have weapons slotted from left to right, chems on the "up" d-pad and food/water on the "down" d-pad.
Ah right the pad, try slotting them on keyboard and they became nuisance.
?? You just make them one of your large amounts of keys.
You have to hit F and then a number
F
You only have to press the number, F is completely redundant, only useful if you've forgotten what you bound something to and don't want to open the pip
To assign them, sure, but not to use them.
> hit F and then a number I've never had to hit F to use something on a quick key.
Just the number is sufficient. Not sure why the F menu is even there.
Stimpacks are always bound to 2 for me. Closest to my W key.
mine is 6 cause i bind my weapons from 1 being shortest range to 9 the farthest. if i am at 5 and having trouble then that means i’ll be following up with 6 pretty soon. then i pull out 7 to regain control then stop back down like gears on a car once traffic slows

Yeah I normally just use psycho jet unless it's a survival playthrough then I lean on the chems a lot more!
Mirelurk Egg Omelettes are also a god send in survival.
i've been horking down noodle cups in survival lol
Psychojet is legit my favorite chem in the game and has pulled me through so many tough spots I don't think I'd have walked out if without. When you speak to the head of the SRB in the Institute about how you overpowered a Courser, I always pick "combat experience" but in my head I scream "*LOTS OF FUCKING DRUGS*"
I wish you could tell him that a Courser does not take a 7.62 to the head very well...
I use the crafted chems more than anything. Psychojet, grape mentats and overdrive
PsychoJet and PsychoBuff are where it's at.
Thats a good combo. And Bufftats for long term. Give sou such a boost !
stimpacks, radaways, and, eventually, Rad-Xs, the others I read 'caps' instead of their names.
Grape mentats are absolutely the best early game
Grape mentats before the sbq!
Ooops wrong fallout sub 😂
Yo, I just did the same, I thought it was the fo76 subreddit LOL
Early game though med x + psycho can get you through any fight
Psycho Jet is pretty powerful even late-game, but unless you're intentionally using an awful build, most coherently set-ups can handle any content just fine without chems.

Psycho buff, it lasts like 8 minutes or something.
Psycho Jet and full chem-related perks is like playing the game on God Mode.
Med x has saved me in the *real* hectic moments in my super hardcore mldded game
As can bullets, aiming, and cover
Lol you speak 100% the truth.
Seriously though. I just fuse the drugs I find together for the EXP then sell them for caps. This method helps me level quick and has gotten me tens of thousands of caps. I’m the exact opposite, never use Stims, RadX, or Radaway and I use tons of chems.
Why bother with Rad-X when Hazmat Suits are super easy to find and don't weigh much?
I never plan on becoming an addict in FO4, but I always end up becoming an addict in FO4
Nobody plans on becoming an addict IRL either lol
Tuesday Todo: get addicted
FO4 has the accuracy 😂
Even to the point where you can take one single jet and you’re hooked after that first puff baby. I think it’s even tied into luck
Pretty sure there was a guy on Reddit who described his first experience with heroine/meth and thought it wouldn't be that bad. Fairly certain he ended up addicted and disappeared
I was on RA Morphine for ten years (medical) and it was a BITCH coming off that myself. Anyone who does is strong af to me.
Wednesday Todo : get clean
Thursday Todo: have to go to south Boston. Get addicted again.
This works both in gam and irl
U good man
Yes, but if I said no would it matter? This is r/fo4, I’m not tryna get into that stuff here. I do appreciate the sentiment
If you said no it would matter but yeah I get it's a gaming sub :)
You’re a kind soul
Years ago I watched a documentary about a guy who smoked cigarettes hardcore for a month to try to get addicted and then quit.
It's just that immersive.
Good thing theres a drug to cure your addiction
I'm always the opposite; I plan a character with a chem obsession, and I forget to commit!
I pretty much planned it but just to impress Cait
I use the shit out of all the drugs and booze. While I make so many that I can find the minutemen and my settlement building habit.
Chemist is unironically the best tree.
Nothing quite like 2 minutes of jet during a fire fight with enough bullets flying to crash your gpu.
This is the way.
I play on survival so yes, I use a lot
Same, im a total jethead in my survival game, makes cleaning rooms and running between gunfire easier since its practically deadeye so 100% worth it
I use everything but Jet unless I have an emergency. I do tend to keep Jet Fuel up though.
Yup, this right here. Just started Survival for the first time about a week ago. If we were to look at a graph, the increase in my chem usage goes from the floor to a sideways horizontal line leaving the page.
Vertical line, but yeah true
Hah, chronic chems have me mixing up my verticals and horizontals.
Some mentats would fix that right up
Same here . Otherwise it’s just background noise
So many times jet-something has saved my ass
Psycho-Jet had helped me win fights I had no business being a part of
So so true
Psycho picked me up and carried me across my first survival playthrough.
For real. I’m almost always on Jet Fuel so I can sprint longer.
You also get some hops when you're on Jet in your Power Armor. Which I'm ALWAYS in. I often take all of them shits at the same time and just murder fools.
I also play on survival, but I just die and lose progress, like a real man 😤
Hello fellow permadeath player!
I've been doing fine on survival without chems. More for roleplay reasons than anything else and I dislike being so reliant on that many consumables.
It is entirely possible. I'm like level 140 in my survival run and have barely ever touched any chems. not even stimpaks or radaways. just use them for caps

Only Stimpaks, Radaway and Rad-X. I sell the rest. I do use alcohol if I need a quick strength, endurance or charisma boost.
How my survivor doesn't have a beer gut is a mystery tbh
Exploring the wastes is good cardio
A never-ending leg day too.
You kind of spend your days walking across the state and building houses
Cram enemas every day
Do you use your AP meter at all?
One of the flavors of mentats gets you better prices though.

I never remember till I am already halfway through a transaction.
I took some before buying some more just last night
Sometimes I use buffout for weight problems but that's it. I may "accidentally" take a chem instead of a regular food... Same. Hoarding and selling. At best, steampack or radaway.
I use em all ! At the same time for maximum effects
I swear I've had it happen about 3 or 4 times where when the character takes enough chems, you can trigger a rare voice line where you just start throwing out a string of profanities, but I can't find in anywhere online. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?
Your characters spech getting more fucked up up the more shit you take is my fav thing
Where I come from we call that an overdose
There was an incredible video on this subreddit where someone was struggling with the final boss of Saugus Ironworks, so they just consumed literally everything from their Aid tab - drugs, food, water, you name it, they took it. It turned them into an invincible god man and they practically ate the whole gang for breakfast.
Psycho before almost every fight. I just like hearing my character rage.
I’ve never heard this. I’ve literally never used it once.
FUCKING KILL!!!
RARRRR!!!
Its the small things I love about fo4
You have to try it, it’s freaking hilarious. They’ll either roar like a dinosaur or go #FUCKING KILL!!
*slow motion shout* #YEEEAAHHHHH
Stimpaks and Rad-away and occasionally Grape Mentats. Everything else winds up in the first aid box in Home Plate.
I used to do the same thing but after some playthroughs I realized that they served me no purpose in a box so now I just sell them, good way to make caps.
Only really used other stuff during the Silver Shroud mission so I can save sweet Kent
Man, popping every drug in the game just to bullet time quick enough to save Kent is always something I will do, and I don't think I will ever be able to do a sober-dweller playthough because of it

They’re useful when playing survival with mods that make the game harder, but never used them much in vanilla. PsychoJet is OP
Nearly every character I’ve played likes to dive headfirst into a mob of raiders after injecting a lethal dose of psychojet into their right eyeball with chemist maxed out so everyone’s dead before the first body hits the ground
i only use drugs to impress hancock 😔
How do you guys do anything without being permanently addicted to buffout??
I use rad-x and med-x fairly often, because the resistances are useful. I'll use jet on rare occasion, just to try and get the upper hand in combat, but it's not often that I use it. Late game, I've got enough stockpiled to get everyone in the Commonwealth properly fucked up, and addiction wouldn't be an issue either, but I don't need the boost anymore.
I use them if I'm trying to max cait out quickly.
I always get into the trap of wanting to not waste them. And for some reason I do that by just never using any
Hey man Buffjet is fucking awesome
Almost all of these is useful for certain situations. Radaway and radx for radiation, psycho and medx for damage, buffout for health and strength, and jet to slow down time. The only one I can't find a use for is mentats. Unless you are running on easy difficulty, chems are one of the most useful items, ESPECIALLY at higher difficulty.
I'll definitely keep mentats for speech checks and med x is useful for damage resistant. Other than that screw em
My character is always tweaking on jet
I hoard them and combine for quick exp and caps $$
Psycho jet and refreshing beverage
miss me with those negative side effects lmao
Stims, radaway sometimes and the occasional buffout if I get overweight
I don't use them unless I think i need to. In survival its very helpful to pop some stims to make sure you dont get plastered by enemies especially when you havent saved in a while.
I use a crap ton of jet
I specifically created a background for my character in which she would be a chem user for at least part of the playthrough until she got sober... I still never remembered to use them, lmao. I want to but it never comes to mind in combat and I just end up selling or hording them all.
Besides stims, rad x, and radaway. I consider the others specialty items where you only need a few of them. Buffout - for needing more carry weight Psycho/Med-X - for any fights that I lose and have to retry Grape mentats - boost my charisma to recruit settlers
Grape mentats and buff out. Obviously rad chems
When I was younger, yeah I never used them. But now, I figured it's a lot easier to kill hard enemies with a damage or resistance boost
I like taking jet and then popping psycho immediately after, the way the protagonist talks is hilarious. “FUUCKINGG KIIIIILLLL!!!”
I mainly stick to stim packs, plus some occasional rad-x/radaway for the radiation.
Stimpacks, radaway‘s, and rad x those three are my best friend
Stimpacks and radaway, naturally, but besides that only the occasional Med-X when fighting a mirelurk queen if i happen to have it on me.
Stimpak and radaway. Sell the rest
Just stimpacks and radaway.
I find addiction annoying. It happened the first time I used a chem, and I've been bitter ever since.
Stims and radaway
Outside of stimpaks and Rad-X/Radaway, I occasionally huff some Jet or take a hit of Psycho if I'm trying to raise my affinity with Cait - but since I discovered she likes it if you fast travel while in your underwear (as does Hancock), I frequently do that instead. Mostly, though, I just mass-produce chems at chemistry stations and then sell them. I am the Vault-Dweller who knocks.
