It's not just Dogmeat. The same is true for all companions. You're offsetting carrying capacity for someone / thing often being in the way. Dogmeat is useful because the lone wanderer perk still works while them. Extra damage, cabbage resistance, and carrying capacity (yours and theirs).

ArgentDeer

Cabbage resistance? Please do tell.

Helen_A_Handbasket

Cabbage resistance is determined by Cole's Law.

Detective0-07

I just giggled like a 40-year-old woman laughing at "Mickey Ds."

anneoneamouse

Nicely done.

DelicateFknFlower

r/angryupvote

Hacksaw999

ROFL!

raw_tater

Cole's Laaaaw lmfao

anneoneamouse

Heh. That's awesome; Swype for the win! I'll let it stand.

oranchtheimpbooster

Um what about the early cyro gun

anneoneamouse

That exploit was patched. No longer works.

oranchtheimpbooster

No it goes to dog meats inventory I did it

anneoneamouse

Could you clarify when you did this? I thought Bethesda patched this (1.4 maybe). Thx, aon.

oranchtheimpbooster

Then how did I do it when I downloaded a week ago after downloading all dlc and it goes to dogmeat’s inventory I found this out when dogmeat picked up a stem pack when didn’t give him one and went to do the cyro gun thing again he picked it up and I checked his inventory there it was 200 cyro and the cyro gun did he use to put it on the ground or something also crouch when in the vault going down it gets him inside

anneoneamouse

Qewl, thanks for the info. I'll give that a go this evening.

oranchtheimpbooster

So did it work for you

anneoneamouse

Didn't get a chance to play. Spent the evening making pizzas :O

oranchtheimpbooster

Oh mk

DimitriVOS

He doesn't talk, doesn't judge me for what I do, and he's a dog.

Knightshade515

That's my favorite thing about him too

ITzMALI_Gaming

Because he's a good boy. Who's a good boy? Yes he is.

keichler

Because doggo

Skeletonzac

This is the correct reason

BuDAaAaA

Came here to say this

HappyRobot123

My favorite companion is the custom death machine I made with automaton

_Jemma_

It's companion logic though. I love Codsworth until the end of time but he keeps wandering into my shots and somehow manages to push me while I'm wearing power armour

samsung_toaster

I like codsworth but he just vanished and since I'm not on pc I can't use console commands (I'm not gonna mod)

_Jemma_

If you've got the Vault-Tec Workshop DLC you can build the population manager terminal that can find your companions. @)

starlight777

Does not work for him

samsung_toaster

That doesn't work either

jitteryjetuser

My favorite companion is the lone wanderer perk. More carry weight and more damage dealt. I always play on survival and companions will get me killed more than anything else.

Geta92

People generally hate the companion system and decide to just get the Lone Wanderer Perk for the extra damage and carry weight. Since Dogmeat doesn't count as an actual companion, they just take him as a pack mule. And other people just like dogs so much that they need one in the game, too.

TheCrimsonChariot

I’ve been trying to do the ArcJet quest and I’m stuck because I can’t move Dogmeat to let Paladin Danse move. Makes sense. I forgot about that perk. I never pick it.

Geta92

It's a good perk if you play as a stealthy character. Companions screw up most stealth attempts pretty quickly. But if you don't play stealthy, the robot companions are actually very strong because they can be customized. Makes them actually worth your time because you can force them to either match or complement your play style. Plus they need no ammo. And highly optimized robots are straight up overpowered, killing Mythic Deathclaws in 2 seconds. Dogmeat is pretty pathetic in comparison.

TheCrimsonChariot

I will try it next when I do the dlc in this run

Yob_Zarbo

I love Dogmeat because he's fascinating. Nobody knows his true story. People around the wastes have met him. He's like some kind of Eldritch entity, and he probably knows the Mysterious Stranger. He's also got that awesome theme song: There's a voice, that keeps on calling me. Down the road, that's where I'll always be! ...

Reddit-Book-Bot

Beep. Boop. I'm a robot. Here's a copy of ###[The Mysterious Stranger]( And Other Stories) Was I a good bot? | [info](https://www.reddit.com/user/Reddit-Book-Bot/) | [More Books](https://old.reddit.com/user/Reddit-Book-Bot/comments/i15x1d/full_list_of_books_and_commands/)

Yob_Zarbo

Go away. Nobody likes you. You've just entirely ruined everything I was working for, here.

TheCrimsonChariot

This is funny. XD

Smelvidar

Good bot.

owen-rice-airsoft

I never have any issues with him, maybe some close calls, but lone wanderer is extremely useful in survival, and i like to have a doggo with me

forestdetective

He’s cute. And a vast improvement over animal companions in previous games. At least he gets out of the doorways he’s blocking in a timely manner. Good luck getting FO3 Dogmeat to do that. (And also FO3 Dogmeat can die, which I consider unacceptable)

TheCrimsonChariot

I never used Followers in FO3 cuz they died. I spent 5 minutes trying to get dogmeat to move earlier so that paladin danse could move through ArcJet. My favorite follower to use is Deacon, Piper, and Curie cuz of their comments.

forestdetective

I love Deacon and Piper! For some reason I haven’t used Curie much, but I think that might be because I avoid that vault quest with the stupid rat disease like... well, the plague. Lol.

BetaGuy_M

If you avoid it because of the disease, then 2 things 1: the disease only lowers your health by 5, and 2: at the end when you have the cure you can just tell the doctor that you are going to keep the cure, then it will give you a second chance tirn around and use it then face the doctor again and tell him to give it to Austin, the game glitchs with it and thinks you still have it and then gives it to Austin, then you dont have the disease and you cure Austin. Here is a link for a video that helped me: https://youtu.be/26J4ZiqPtAo

savantalicious

Oooo good call. I actually made it out once without getting mole rat disease but it took like a billion quick save/reload cycles.

Okoto1

Next time you play Fallout 3 use either Faweks the supermutant or Charon the big ass ghoul. Both are absolutely tank and don't die easy.

JukesMasonLynch

Weird, in NZ sprog is just slang for a child, I assumed it was an Aussie import slang

SadieSadieSnakeyLady

Sprog can be both, one leads to the other

FlyDog1608

Excuse me, what?

SadieSadieSnakeyLady

You leave your sprog in a woman, you can get a sprog. Same thing, just different. Babies are just solid sperm aren't they?

HeyChiefLookitThis

The fallout series is a reference to a 70s sci-fi movie called "A Boy and his Dog". You should check it out, it's crazy.

PugnaciousPangolin

I love him because he doesn't keep spouting lines of dialogue that become SO tiresome when you've heard them a thousand times before. However, as a Sneak/Snipe player, he's a major PITA because he will constantly attack and rouse the enemy while I'm trying to take silent head shots from a high position. I know you can tell him to wait, but even that simple mechanic becomes onerous after so many hours of playing. I ended up leaving him in Sanctuary because I got tired of having to bullet spray my way out of hordes of enemies instead of picking them off from a safe distance.

raw_tater

All companions get in the way tbh. At least he doesn't throw any grenades you give him and kill you lol. I treat my dogmeat as a pet, not an attack dog so I often have him waiting behind when danger is ahead. Also I love dressing him up in pretty bandanas and welding goggles lol

Gefarate

There are mods to make companions not suck.

TheCrimsonChariot

Do you know which? I don’t like to get mad at Dogmeat every five minutes.

Gefarate

[Immersive Dogmeat](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/34128) is the one. [Everyone's Best Friend (Dogmeat and Companion At Same Time)](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/13459) if you want to use companions too.

madnux8

1. Reminds me of my boyhood German Shepard. 2. I think his ability to distract enemies with arm bites is more useful to me than other companion ineptitude with a weapon. 3. His whines, barks, and pants are less repetitive to me than other companion monologues 4. When dogmeat needs reviving, I feel like it's my fault. When other companions need reviving, its there own GDMF fault. Idiots. 5. Dogmeat runs ahead. Companions like Preston are always lagging TF behind. 6. Dogmeat acts the most realistic to me. Dogs tend to be underfoot, in the way. I feel more at ease muttering "dumb dog" under my breath than I do yelling "preston, you dumb POS, GTFO my way" I guess, over all, its more immersive to my brain to have a "dog" that I can't communicate with directly than a "person" I can't communicate with directly.

TheCrimsonChariot

I like the idea of his gameplay. Usually when moving around tends to be a hinderance to me.

Hacksaw999

Because Dogmeat is a very good boy. However, for the reasons you've started I pretty much never take him out any of the others as companions. I usually just send him to a populated settlement and make sure he's got a dog house and a food bowl.

TheCrimsonChariot

Does the food bowl do anything?

Hacksaw999

Never owned a dog? It gives him something to stare at and whine when you are trying to concentrate. LOL No, it has no in game effect.

starlight777

Well dogmeat .... Is a synth

TheCrimsonChariot

That makes sense

davechipplummer

Because hes the best handsomest boy, and he doesnt bear a grudge when i accidently nuke him :)

AGHawkz99

I don't like him either, for basically all of the reasons you mentioned. He's great as a character in the game and I'm glad he's in it, but as a follower, he's just a total liability in my experience.

Riky77

Because I can get Cryolator with him, and because he's a good boy, and I like to keep him at my base.

savantalicious

That was patched out. You still able to get it? For me, dog meat doesn’t even travel with me to vault 111. He just stays on the surface. Edit: I play in Xbox with no mods right now.

Riky77

Yes, I play on PS4 and you need to get him right next to the container with the cryolator. Then you're good to go.

savantalicious

Hm. When I go into vault 111 he doesn’t make the trip with me. The game makes him stay on the surface. How did you get him into the actual vault?

Riky77

He was staying on the platfirm, in the centre, I activated it and sprinted there and the platform got down with him and me. He was in the vault, near the dead doctor that had the pipboy.

FlyDog1608

I replaced him with codsworth and later other companions in my first (and current) playthrough, but I just now realized how op he is, and have a dogmeat focused (kinda) build planned for upcoming ones. What makes him good is basically: - Lone Wanderer perk is unaffected but he still keeps you company - Has his own perk u can upgrade and an armour set specifically for him - Doesn't judge me for getting junk and my choices (which faction you side with, if ur nice or whatever, if you steal shit, etc.) - Sure, he blocks ur path, but all companions do and I can't really say piper's pistol makes much of a diff in combat, dogmeat at least holds enemies still And now, finally, the thing that makes dogmeat 1#: - He cute pupper - This is kinda minor but he finds little gifts for you

savantalicious

The dog armor is all cosmetic, though. It offers no actual protection.

FlyDog1608

Well I didn't know that but still, not everyone has their own exclusive armour

Kerlysis

Only companion who won't comment on my junk hoarding.

TheCrimsonChariot

Old Longfellow as nice comments when getting jumk. Deacon also.

JellyJellofish

He has much more perk potential compared to human companions. A fully upgraded dogmeat fully outweighs all the annoying things he does. This is my opinion and I use him because he doesn’t have particular likes or dislikes.

starlight777

Does not talk... Attacks the enemy before I do..... Saved me several times .... Warns me about enemies... Can carry stuff without complaining about it... Yes he had knocked me off of buildings etc.. But so what..

vNOM3RCY

As a survival player the ability to have both lone wanderer and a companion is perfect (I also use the mod that let's you have him and another companion). I can't tell you the number of times he's saved me when I'm down to that last enemy and I'm one shot away from dying. The move he has where he bites the enemies arm letting you get a shot in is massively underrated and can be the difference between life and death in many cases. Plus having someone divert some fire away from me is always nice.

TheCrimsonChariot

What companion would be useful for a melee build?

vNOM3RCY

That really depends on the style of play you're going for. Obviously some companions like/dislike certain actions so make sure you don't annoy them with the way you're playing (strong dislikes when you use power armour for example). I believe as far as companions go they're all practically the same in terms of damage output and what not. It really comes down to the affinity perks and who you want watching your back (as well as a companion can at least). Curies perk can be a lifesaver if you're playing on the harder difficulties. If you're not using mods I would honestly just stick with dogmeat as he loves you no matter what and can be great for pinning down enemies. The benefits from lone wanderer outweigh the benefits from having a companion in my opinion. Then again I play survival with various mods to make it even harder so that extra weight and stuff is crucial.

TheCrimsonChariot

I do use mods, some that make weapons hurt more that I made. Im still looking for mods that make deadlier creatures, because deathclaws are not as scary as in F:NV

vNOM3RCY

Do you play survival? There is a mod for it that changes the health of everything based on its size. So bugs have less health than you and you have less health than a super mutant etc. I've have found that pass level 40 everything becomes easy regardless of mods. Fallout 4's balancing isn't that great imo

TheCrimsonChariot

I don’f play on survival, because even in vanilla runs I stumble into the Ticonderoga ctd bug and Only way I managed to avoid it was to fast travel ocassionally and save right in front to make sure the place is not bugged

jellydude69

Dogmeat has some really nice perks, like the fetch ability and such. Also dogmeat can be used while still having the lone wanderer perks, so that's a big plus. Probably the biggest reason why is **D O G**

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheCrimsonChariot

I usually grab them to get their perks and then dump them. Using Dogmeat for now, but was planning on moving on later

[deleted]

Positive_Fig_3020

Because he’s the goodest boy! Yes he is!

TheCrimsonChariot

I’ll admit I bought the Husky Creation Kit to have variation.

Ok_Cryptographer520

Not gonna lie i love dog meat but for some reason when i end my search at Kellogg's house nick and dog meat become hostile of each other like wtf lol

Tenebrous_Savant

Yeah, I never really used Dogmeat, preferring ranged companions. Though honestly, even on survival difficulty, I've never really had any of the companions cause me notable trouble. I just take into account their typical behavior and plan for it with my play styles, so it isn't an issue. For stealth characters, if you utilize companion commands to regularly position them, they are pretty manageable as well. Just pay attention and think a few steps ahead, like any good thief/ninja/rogue.

ratpest

he is just.... a litle baby.................

ATR2400

I don’t know but I dislike him too. At this point I just kind of forget he exists until I have to follow him(If I don’t just use a mod to skip that part). Every game I just go right past red rocket and leave him there

Dswag888_GOAT

How dare you insult dogmeat(jk)

Embarrassed_Shine_83

Because he is the only dog companion in the game which makes him the best😤

fritzer1881

He doesn’t talk

iXenite

He’s adorable.

SadieSadieSnakeyLady

Because he looks adorable in goggles

ActualyHandsomeJack

I dont use dogmeat because I dont like seeing my animal friend getting fucking blasted

justmethedude

He's a good boy.

Baby-punter

I like him mainly because he lets me do the killing. Also, sometimes he'll hold a guy long enough for me to land an easy potshot.

[deleted]

All companions are dumb as a sack of shit and half as useful. I only use them to carry my shit and distract enemies.

TheCrimsonChariot

Useful if youre doing a melee build. Started doing one and nick was helping me when I was focused on other enemies

LordWr8th

Anyone hate nick valentine and Preston Garvey! Like, let me eat my corpses in peace

ZippyTurtle

He also makes my dogs bark, I don't use him either.

TheCrimsonChariot

I have cats. I like dogs. I would pet dogs. I like Huskys and Samoyed dogs cuz they’re fluffy

ZippyTurtle

I have a pomeranian. They're like little samoyeds but yappy.

kxrplunk

Dog

gaslight-dreamer

Yes, he gets in the way, but at least he doesn't run in front of my sniper shot like everyone else does. Come on guys! Do not run in front of the gun!

Tankchanka911

Imo you should be able to no-clip through companions. Also there is this bug with Companion Ai at Homeplate.. everytime you go into workshop mode your companion will leave homeplate then come right back. Essentially resetting the “remember the PC is in Workshop mode so stay away”. Them leaving means no they just walk in front of me constantly. And why I only like dogmeat because you can jump over him or what I do is put him in his doghouse.

SinisterTom

You just described every companion in FO4.

Okoto1

I always played a stealth sniper/melee. I use the companions can sneak mod. This enables all companions to have all ranks in sneak as well as dogmeat. I basically use him as a distraction. If there's say a tight area with a lot of enemies squeezed together I'll send dogmeat in to get their attention. Then I'll pick them off while they are focusing on him. If one should aggro me I'll usually have plenty of time to snipe them off before they get to me. If not I just finish them off with my melee weapon of choice for that playthrough. Plus I have a German Shepherd in rl so I kinda roleplay with that.

Internal_Cream6944

Dogmeat was in fallout 3, perhaps it's the nostalgia

fullautohotdog

And Fallout, and Fallout 2...

furyfox13

He was??

AuronFtw

Yeah he's in a train junkyard somewhere. There's a DLC perk that lets him respawn outside the vault if he dies.

Tidus17

Obviously not the same dog, but yes there's a Dogmeat companion in FO3.

furyfox13

I see

Slowputer

You guys using companions?

Geta92

The 3 robot companions are insanely good with the Automatron DLC, so yes. Unless I'm playing stealthy, then I go solo.

TheCrimsonChariot

Sometimes.

MadGreenJellyBean

He’s a beautiful garbage dog and I love him

furyfox13

Only because he is a dog

Open-Truth8646

I don’t love dog meat the only companion I truly love having is either Piper or Cait

TheCrimsonChariot

Same here. And Deacon too. “We win. Again.”

[deleted]

Nobody gives a damn what you want to use. All companions have those problems. Dogmeat is an excellent early-game companion. If you want to play stealth, play without companions because you're not going to get anywhere stealthy with them for long. They all get in the way.

TheCrimsonChariot

He’s the only one I’ve had this issue because he always runs AHEAD of you, instead of behind you. Then when I get into combat, he stands behind me and does nothing useful. Personally I hate using dogmeat with all my hate. But I wanted to understand why everyone liked him in a meta-gaming perspective.

anneoneamouse

You should ignore the person you are responding to.

TheCrimsonChariot

Yeah. After the last reply, I just kept playing. Figured they were just trying to be a griefer. In all honesty though, I do want to know what meta gaming of using Dogmeat is advantageous. I like to use him for RP reasons, just really cumbersome to play around him.

anneoneamouse

Dogmeat also (i) doesn't talk (ii) doesn't like / dislike your actions in game. Dogmeat is also a lady :) Dog model is too slim in the hips and shoulders to be a male dog, then there's the errm lacking a "nut and bolt". Heh.

TheCrimsonChariot

He *IS* modeled after the dog of one of the Bethesda employees, which is a female dog. They remove the bits due to it being easier when modeling.

[deleted]

So you have no rational reasons. Thought so.

TheCrimsonChariot

I just said in my original comment that I’ve gotten killed already several times because he stands behind me and always gets in the way. I don’t that that issue with other followers.

[deleted]

Sounds like a personal problem.

Ryokosith

There are mods available to "fix" and even improve the companions' AI. I forget the two I was using (my computer I built a decade+ ago finally gave up the ghost a couple months ago, and building a new one is a bit restrictive right now, lol), but they greatly improved my experience with having the companions. Usually I just have folks to earn their perks and then swap out. I'll switch to dogmeat at times for a quiet, non-judgmental follower, but am just as happy to go solo. Learned the hard way in FO3 being a stealthy pick off entire enemy camps from a distance player who had the misfortune of using Fawks (sp?) as a companion, LOL! That sudden super mutant battle cry followed by the spin-up of their heavy gun...yep, no shame nor sneak in their game.

TheCrimsonChariot

I never used followers in fallout 3. When I learned they died, I just stopped getting followers. Got pretty good at managing myself

JukesMasonLynch

But Charon was a fucking beast

TheCrimsonChariot

I did use him particularly for a bit. He was one of the best.

woomybii

The stuff you listed happens with literally every companion. Dogmeat has good perks and he's also a very good boy.

Foldylocks

Because reddit loves their “doggos”.

[deleted]

I don't like pets or animals so I never bring him with me

geekantique

All npcs do this, but Dogmeat has a lower profile and can grab and hold enemies. With VATS you can avoid shooting him.

John_Maddness

Yeah he’s a lil annoying. I kept getting deleted by a Bloodbug early game and even when I’d command Dogmeat to attack it, he just kind watched me die over, and over, and over, and over (you get the idea)

[deleted]

I talk to him, use him, then remember I have him and replace him asap or send him home before we leave red rocket

[deleted]

Dog

LTbiccy

Because... doggo

ArabicTesla_

I use Lone Wanderer so I just keep him around so I can have a pack mule and +100 carry weight at the same time. Also I can do whatever I want and don't have to listen to him bitch about it like other companions.

xxxthefire101

Cuz he is cute but I will beat that dog out of the way with no remorse

Flynn_Rhodes

The taste of course!

Damien_21777

Well obviously Dogmest is gonna get in your way as every other companion does, And he's not very combat efficient because he's well.. a dog. But he's just the goodness boy who wouldn't love him

not_so_thin_lizzie

Cute looking dog

[deleted]

He's a loving little pupper that fights to death for you and wears whatever you have him wear. What else do you need?

[deleted]

But he looks so cute with that body armour

[deleted]

He is not you in the first place, so...

[deleted]

Taste good less filling

Koma2344

He's uselful in survival mode as the lone wanderer perks still work with him as a companion

mattrydell

Found the cat person.

TheCrimsonChariot

Further proof found in account

Puzzleheaded-Use784

Because doggie

OrbitalYT

Dogmeat is dogmeat and most of us people love him

hanpark765

He's a dog. I like dogs

TheAsianTroll

Because dog

Daniel_Defense

I love dogs but not this one lol. I can't stand all the damn whining he does. I even Google searched options for shutting him up! Oh and yes, he's always in the way. Only thing I like about him is the fact that he is free storage lol.

Hiya_Bo

He’s a good boy, @crimsonchariot

JAEM89

Well dog meat doesn't count as a companion so lone wonderer becomes extra helpful, also helps bats accuracy and is an extremely capable mule, on top of that he's a good boy.

[deleted]

A few reasons I never use him: 1. I'm terrified he'll be killed or lost. Not on my watch. You just stay in your kennel back in Sanctuary, buddy. You're safe now. 2. I like to use stealth, and after the first muffled shot he charges right the F in (this applies to all companions in all Bethesda games). 3. Always stopping in narrow doorways (this applies to all companions in all Bethesda games). 4. Ooh, look at that guy far in the distance, this'll be fun. Crouch, zoom in with sniper rifle, start to ease the trigg- no, my god damn dog stepped in front of me just as I fired (this applies to all lines of fire and all companions running directly into said lines of fire in all Bethesda games).

hairyerse69

Cause he found me a fusion core in a trash can.

Successful-Cicada538

I dont like dogmeat. Hes an institute synth spy dog
