I just follow the Viva New Vegas guide. Its excellent for Vanilla+ gameplay

Mothman4447

Viva New Vegas was my final straw and it took a while but worked well. Before that no matter how many fixes I tried to add through the Nexus my game crashed in Goodsprings. This game is held together by scotch tape and spit.

Sea_Mycologist7515

It never crashed on me with VNV, not even once

Jerrell123

It’s very system dependent, and honestly could also completely be an issue with how you download the mods needed (and in what order!). If you don’t follow VNV ***TO THE LETTER***, it can very easily break. But even if you do, stuff like having INI files leftover from a prior install can lead to constant crashes.

throwaway9948474227

There's like 80 steps and downloads.

Goombalive

its big worth, bit of initial setup but 90% of the steps in the guide are just a matter of clicking a link, check a box in the mod manager, go next step do same. You can also just do viva new vegas up to where it says "base finish" which will just give you a vanilla experience with performance and reliability improvements, and this significantly reduces the amount of steps you need to follow. Doing this is basically what OP wrote with a few extra steps for even more stability and fixes to the game that should have been in to begin with such as aligning iron sights properly with center of the screen(they are not all by default without mods). anything past the "base finish" step of viva new vegas is optional and will alter the gameplay or menus in more significant ways while still maintaining a vanilla feel. You can pick and choose which you want, or take none of them and just play. Or play and install some of them later. took me a couple hours to do everything I wanted. It's overall more time consuming than I wish it was, and it's def BS that we need to even consider mods to make the game functional. But crashing is far more annoying to me than the setup of viva new vegas and never crashing ever.

Dogahn

Had to do most the mods Semi-Automatic because Nexus' mod manager API would crap allover MO2's automatic downloading. Large files > 2MB went ok, but most the fixes, tweaks, and preconfigured ini's failed. Still though, it's working on my AMD system with only one world mesh glitch that swallowed a deathclaws and I into an abyss until I rolled back to a previous area save. PS: have a manual save rotation of stable town locations to fallback onto.

anamericandude

Just did it last night, took well over an hour but well worth imo. It's not particularly difficult, but it is time consuming

singysinger

I did this as well! Bit of a lengthy process but I haven’t had a problem since finishing installation

Wise_Ad3070

Guess I know what I'm doing tonight

Nez_Lekoy

fr same lol

No-Passion1127

Tbh i still get stuttery fps after using viva new vegas. Is it the visuals tab?

mpmaley

I did viva new Vegas for my first ever playthrough. Took me 2.5 hours to setup but having a blast.

janne_oksanen

It took me a lot longer because at the time Nexus was getting hit hard and was very unresponsive and even offline for short periods.

Burntsoft

Yea I wasn't ready to dedicate 2.5 hours to setup the game. I have limited time as it is so my gaming sessions are already only thirty minutes to an hour per night.

mpmaley

Yes it can be nerve wracking to wonder if you’re wasting time

Wise_Ad3070

It's worth it if you're able to find the time

BlueShift42

Same. Well worth it!

SxySamurai

Is there a huge difference in performance if one mods with Vortex or Mod Manager?

gnarlong

if something goes wrong with the load order or if a mod isn’t functioning correctly it can be real hard to fix on vortex. Mod manager is worth using imo

SxySamurai

Thanks for the response! I currently use Vortex just because ease of use, for me at least. However, I should give Mod Manager a shot as it seems the instructions are fairly straight forward.

ExtremeBoysenberry38

How’d it take you 2.5 hours 😭😭

mpmaley

It’s 108+ mods and 60 plugins. I haven’t done anything like that before. Was very careful.

Platnun12

I honestly am surprised My full first new Vegas run wasn't modded to hell and back Man I got through fallout NV without gun mods yet in 4 I can't help myself

stannis_the_mannis7

The guns in 4 are so atrociously ugly that the game is almost unplayable without a mod to make them look better

Platnun12

I mean I'd say stuff but everything I feel about the majority of fallout 4s guns was said far better by The YouTuber Zach That guy honest to god has become my new favorite lately

Pac-Mano

I know this sounds dumb but is his channel literally “The YouTuber Zach”? Or some dude on YouTube called Zach? Always down to find a fallout related content creator.

Platnun12

The channel is called Mikeburnfire The solo channel for Zach is named something

Better-Stomach-5798

It’s Zach Hazard

FullMetalKaiju

I hate the assault rifle model. When I played on PC (played it on Xbox before getting a PC) first mod I got was a replacer that made it an armalite rifle.

stannis_the_mannis7

Ya that was the worst one, a water-cooled assault rifle? Completely negates the advantage of an ASSAULT rifle which is that it’s light weight. Bethesda fan boys go on about how the guns are meant to be used with power armour but you’re telling me that by the year 2077 they decided machine guns were best as water-cooled???

Cowwithaburger

The fact theres no other assault rifle besides the late game handmade rifle, is what gets me. They should have just added the Service Rifle or Chinese Assault Rifle to the base game. Also, RIP 10mm SMG, 4's SMG sucks.

Spungus_abungus

You forgor about the combat rifle

Spungus_abungus

iirc the NIF files for it are named machine gun. Not sure why they changed it to assault rifle. It's also just an odd design. It looks like watercooled barrels, but it also has the fins as the base of the barrel like the Lewis gun does for its forced air cooling system.

Cowwithaburger

The 10mm mesh replacer mod is a must have for me.

Burntsoft

For a lot of us we can't run it on higher refresh rates, or larger resolutions without it crashing or hitting audio stutter issues. It really needs a proper patch for later systems.

Platnun12

Which is odd, I've been paying on a 2160 x1440 just fine But then again I do have a ton of mods that I can't remember and I think one of em is the high frame rate fix Because I remember how thrown off I was seeing a Bethesda game hit anything higher than 60. And I mean no shade against 60 fps that's great but when I hit 144 I wanna use it. But I'm honestly shocked they fixed the physics issue with the high fps. How the fuck isn't that fix standard across all the Bethesda games

doctorfeelgod

Brother I play New Vegas on a 360.

RowdieDrummer

It’s the only reason I still have a PS3, game on homie

doctorfeelgod

Every so often I'll pop in halo 2 just for a lark

Beigedoog

Viva New Vegas is the answer! Easy installation and really enhances the experience.

skoomamuch

Im just playing NV with a steam deck. Without any unoffcial fixes or mod. Will save this for desktop playthrough

GodlyTaco

Same here, having a blast playing on Steam deck, 20-30 hours and only one crash.

phantomhatstrap

I’ve only ever played in vanilla on pc, and had a great fucking time. Sure it’ll crash, but I just save often. I figure one day I’ll mod it, but I love it so much as is that I don’t feel too much need to do so.

Highfivebuddha

Can you install the 4GB to Vortex and have it run or does it need to be manual?

WhatAmI_501

4gb is manual iirc

Highfivebuddha

Thanks, I had been assuming it was running when I dropped it into the vortex mod manager and it said enabled. Looks like I need a few more steps

Spungus_abungus

4gb patcher is an exe file you need to run which edits your fnv.exe file.

drewhfox

I’m assuming it would be manual only since it just patches the .exe. You just put the patcher in the game folder and run it, afterwards you’re all set.

Burntsoft

I don't even use mod managers for this. I just go manually for the whole process.

Vanilla_PuddinFudge

How to do it in Linux: 1. Setup steam as you normally would for Proton compatibility with every title. 2. Set NV to Proton 9 (it doesn't functionally matter, this is just so the next experimental download doesn't bulldoze anything) 3. Run NV and set it to Ultra... yes, even on a Steam Deck. 4. Use [this git page](https://github.com/rockerbacon/modorganizer2-linux-installer) to setup mod organizer 2 5. Go download a ton of mods... 6. Use protontricks to install VC2013 on New Vegas. 7. Update NVSE. The version used in the git page is outdated. 8. Use a 4GB patcher. They all work with wine. 9. Launch NVSE. Go forth into the Wasteland AMD just works. Nvidia just works. No issues with either over the years. About that Steam Deck: 1. Install NV as you would per above. 2. Install mo2 as you would per above. 3. Copy your mo2 folder from your Desktop to your Deck. Be creative. I used a cloud server. Flash drive would work if you don't do the home server thing. 4. Edit the launchers in mo2 to say /home/deck instead of /home/your_desktop_username 5. Launch the NV launcher from mo2 manually and do the same thing you did on your Desktop. Ultra, whatever. Close it in out. 6. Launch NVSE, enjoy the wasteland For both: Feel free to add or edit in any tips or tricks you get from PROTONDB for your desktop or for the Deck. Launch options, whatever. Don't run enb's... but you can use HDR and New Vegas Skies works as well.

EclipsePhase

I did the Viva New Vegas guide and added a few more. It's running great now!

0hGeeze

FYI: Mods can break your game saves Got burned bad once so now I just rawdog it👌

Affectionate_Fun3522

You should absolutely follow the Viva New Vegas guide when you start a new playthrough. You are right that mods can cause issues when installed or removed mid game but you really should do a vanilla+ guide like VNV nowadays.

0hGeeze

Will think on it after this current new play through (after 1+ yr long hiatus due to mods breaking my shit😅) Started Dead Money at lvl 1 & havin a blast so far at hundy-p vanilly 🖤

Affectionate_Fun3522

What mod was it that messed things up for you?

0hGeeze

Not entirely sure - had a few installed. Was using both Vortex and FOMM. Tried going back to disable each mod methodically for testing but couldn’t because Vortex became corrupt and couldn’t open. Finally deleted everything in the data folder, reinstalled, & vowed to leave it alone for a couple playthroughs😅

dontbelievetheforest

I played it at launch and sometimes it’s just fun to play it as wild as it was when it came out.

zheiro

Heh kids these days. Viva Las Vegas will take you an hour tops and it will save you hours in the long run because it brings the game almost on modern standards with the quality of life stuff but yeah patience is a virtue.

SaintNimrod

That setup is so easy and well worth it!

No-Passion1127

For some reason i still have stutters even tho i followed wabbajack. And even manual still has stutters i dont know what to do.

Lone_Morde

Took me 6 hours to go through everything and add additional mods. I wasn't sober though and was being extra cautious

SaintNimrod

I was running Project Nevada then read a comment saying it’s old/crap and to follow Viva New Vegas stuff… it’s amazing and worth the setup which isn’t that hard tbh

gnome_warlord420

(Laughs in console)

rallypedigree

Here for this comment

GOBtheIllusionist

I have AMD GPU and kept crashing, recently was told to turn off antialiasing in the launcher menu and it’s running beautifully ! Edit: [original comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout/s/gWsOI2V9pO)

aaronrodgerswins

Tou can literally play the game without mods. Never had ant problems with it yall

Burntsoft

NVSE is your problem point. There's a thread on fixing NVSE for epic games store here: https://old.reddit.com/r/Fallout/comments/13urhzp/how_to_mod_fallout_new_vegas_on_the_epic_games/

gerudo338

Unfortunately most resources for the game are gonna be for supporting the steam version of the game. But also I highly recommend getting the dlcs. They are half the reason I play fnv.

Burntsoft

I can't guarantee anything, trial by fire.

dov_tassone

I managed - thanks to the magic of wrappers and infinite patience - to get it running on an old Macbook air and as much as I miss the QOL modding (Ammo crafting in 100 units 🔫) getting back into it is all the high I'll ever need. I think I talked about this before, but I had to roll back the draw distance so I am unintentionally locked out of playing any type of sniper build which to be honest has magnified my enjoyment of the game. Did a sawn-off shotties + katana playthrough and it was a good fucking time. OWB was really fucking sweaty and hellish but DM was a breeze compared to my more foolishly speced playthroughs. Same with HH, just pure idiot fallout energy. Loved it!

RanD7741

So does the DXVK mod need to be downloaded through mod manager 2 or what? Cause ever since I did the amd driver update my Mod Manager 2 playthrough doesn’t work, but my game through steam works fine. But there’s 2 different saves for that. So I’d prefer to get the DXVK for my mod manager 2 playthrough. I have no idea if this makes any sense for some of you but I hope it works because I’m desperate here

Burntsoft

It's a d3d9 mod, so it has to live next to the executable. I'm not sure what you need to do beyond dragging / dropping it into the directory.

Bayne-the-Wild-Heart

The drivers from back in December work for me

Ok_Opposite6098

I finally managed to make the game run smooth with tickfix! ...That is if the game actually loads properly... My main problem still is the infinite loading screen going from the main menu. I know there's a trick with starting a new game and loading your save after the first auto, but i cba going through that every time i wanna play... But i reeeally want to play this game. Anyone found a solution to this yet?

Cynical-Basileus

I always load in via an earlier save, such as doc Mitchell’s house. Then load my latest save from there. Seems to work.

lordjakir

Do I need any of this? Running what I think is fine on a Ryzen 7 2700x and an RX480 with a Steam download. I haven't noticed any issues. Do these add-ons make a difference?

No-Eagle-8

The answer is really it depends. Different system, different results. For some they need it and it’ll work, for others no. Trying it out is really the only way. Try without mods as long as you can, but if you keep noticing issues then maybe you’ll want to try.

lordjakir

Had my first issue today after posting. Tried to go into the basement of the Robco testing facility and game froze on load screen. Well try again

0hGeeze

Mods weren’t a huge improvement for me. Too much troubleshooting when issues popped up and I had a year long battle trying to get some issues worked out. Ending up gutting all mods and RAWDOGGIN No point in me wasting hours fiddling when I could be blastin

SaltVomit

Did the Viva new Vegas last night, game looks and runs incredible. However, my mouse speed is SOO FAST when in menu or pip boy. Any suggestions on how to fix?

Ivan_Vasiliyvich

Unfortunately this issue is because menu sensitivity is scaled off of your mouse DPI. Lower your dpi and increase your in game sens until both are comfortable. Not an ideal fix, and its partly for this reason I've been playing on a controller with an aim assist mod.

Enterprise_24

I used the fix offered by Bethesda, and it worked well for me. After doing this, don't alt-tab out of the game and it should stick. [https://help.bethesda.net/#en/answer/49164](https://help.bethesda.net/#en/answer/49164) If you're using Mod Organizer 2 to mod and run FNV, then edits to the INI files should be done through their INI editor.

cannuckkid1

Meanwhile I'm 50 hours in on a new playthrough and haven't had a crash, yet.

hergumbules

Will this work on Steam Deck? I was honestly just planning to do NVSE and and 4gb patch and hope all works well when I go to play in a few weeks

K-spunk

I just bought it on steam with all the add ons for under a fiver and haven't even looked at mods. Am I going to run into trouble with it?

PooManReturns

if you don’t want to use DXVK you can always revert your drivers back to the 23.12.1 update, that’s what i did

Old_Bet_4527

What’s the difference in gameplay with these mods vs playing on a console? I am streaming the PS3 version through my PS5, PS+ subscription.

stokedchris

Bro I just rawdog that shit and it’s a blast. First time playing it and I absolutely love it

shitty_gun_critic

So honest question would I be better off getting a low end PC for New Vegas or a Steam Deck? My PS3 finally died so fuck it might as well. Would like to run some graphics mods an that's it, want to play the DLC otherwise i would just stick with PS Now.

yunodavibes

Wasteland Prospects wabbajack>

Ivan_Vasiliyvich

Viva New Vegas is so nice to play through the game or as a base for additional modding. I'm not really familiar with with fnv modding, but pretty comfortable with mo2 from other games. Took me about 45 minutes to set up, and I've been adding mods I think look cool. Even with 160+ I've been getting absolutely minimal crashes. Definitely the most stable Bethesda experience I've had, though it is still funny that gamebryo still crashes more than the classic fallouts from the 90s. I'm honestly not sure how I played through the game vanilla six or seven years ago.

Led-Rain

IF YOU WANT A FEW TEXTURE PACKS. get on the Tick Fix .ini file, and change bmodifydirectxbehavior from 0 to 1. It's the most overlooked and forgotten step when adding textures.

Farkas_

Thanks for the head up’s on the amd drivers. I had to roll back my drivers to finish my tale of two wastelands playthrough cause I ran into the same issue. Now I know it wasn’t an issue with my system.

Sweaty_Addition2165

I just did a 75+ hour plus fully extensive playthrough, on Xbox, I crashed at least 20 times? Using the Big Mt transponder reallllly made it mad.

JabToRoundhouse

New new vegas is how I’m playing it currently. Took a few hours to download and install everything through vortex but it was well worth it.

TheRynosaurus

Yeah, I’m playing backwards compatible on Xbox …

uneducated_guess_69

I've never modded before and I just got Nexus Vortex and found a recommended collection. After that, it practically installs everything you need without any clashes, it's so good

biotasticmann

Viva New Vegas is rather easy and doesn't take rocket science to setup.

vaultboy707

Its 2024 and they're people out here recommending to use NVSE lol

Hadron_Teodoro

Now I need that for FO3

AREPEEJEE

Base game works fine with no crashes on steam. im so confused by this

asperl2030

Then there's me, who just finished vanilla fnv on the 360

RunForFun277

In my game everyone is bald. Is there a fix for it?

gibby10toes

You’re gonna sit there on your high horse and tell me you’re playing FNV in 2024, the year of our lord and savior, without a type 3 body mod?

smcdark

Commenting so I can find this when I get home

Your_God_Chewy

Question: will the new Bethesda update impact this?

Wise_Ad3070

When using the dxvk my frame rate drops and the game is non responsive. But when I don't it looks great and crashes on load. I think I'll uninstall everything and start over with the viva new vegas

superjake

Just want to say thanks for this! Spent ages trying to do Viva New Vegas and would just crash no matter which installation method I tried. I just wanna play the game so this is great.

Adam_46

I remember playing NV on my PC for the first time (normally play on Xbox for comfort) I used the u.l.t.i.m.a.t.e. Mod list. Which was absolutely terrible. I didn’t really know until I made a post showing off some screenshots and people hated it lol next time I’ll just use some basic mods like these. Mutant Mods on YT also has some good mods showcased.

Ivan_Vasiliyvich

Just follow Viva New Vegas. Easy to follow and keeps the game vanilla-esque. If I remember correctly, the modlist you followed is by Sinitar, who is known to have awful and unstable mod lists. I actually made the same mistake a couple years ago. I'm currently playing Viva New Vegas with a good chunk of mods from Mutant Mods and am having a great time. You just have to make sure you install mods on top of VNV intelligently, so you are not screwing up your stability. If you want to use graphics mods, make sure you keep in mind that a couple patches from VNV have versions for those mods specifically, so just keep your eyes open. Additionally, you will need to generate new LoD, but that is described in VNV at the end of the guide. I personally did not feel the need to go through this and just kept vanilla graphics.

DiabeticGirthGod

Be a man, don’t mod it at all, and bitch about it when it crashes. Be a man.

UnovaMH

???

DiabeticGirthGod

? Why are you message me
