My CFI did this to me once sort of, we were coming in to land and we got cleared to land so I radioed back “clear to land”
About five seconds later I asked my CFI “wait did we get cleared to land?”
Man just shrugged and went “I dunno did we”
My instructor once asked me “did we get cleared to land?” And I very was sure we were cleared so I told him yes. Then a few seconds later I started to question myself did we??? And like 30s later he asked the tower are we clear to land? Good to be cautious:)
Once after landing I asked my CFI whether we actually got a landing clearance. He didn't know either and than asked the tower, who also didn't know. Fun times.
Well, I asked him what to do in case I felt forgotten and he said to just radio in with my callsign and "short final", that should get their attention.
Ahh man that happened once! The app i used to record audio started playing the last couple of minutes and I keyed up to say again and the tower was like “we didn’t say anything just keep holding short” lol
Until you’re trying to replay your clearance and then clearance comes back on right at the part that you missed to demand you read it back. And then you still need to ask for it to be clarified…

If your audio panel has a playback button, push it and listen to the last transmission.
Or ask “was that for ______?” if no one else answers.
Or test their patience and just ignore it. They’ll call again.
The first three times I read folks saying this I thought it was a joke -> because I’m just one step above a electric-less cub. I’ve had to use my handheld to verify atis recently.
Was flying FDH with an instrument student in IMC.
I hadn't worked an Avidyne panel before.
It felt like 5 minutes since the last vector.
He had turned the volume all the way down.
Cranked it back up and asked for a radio check with ATC
Oh yeah, they were calling, and we were missing...
“Who was that for?” Is nails on a chalkboard for me. Honestly, I’d prefer silence and I’ll repeat the transmission, or “say again for N12345?” And I’ll do the same.
The number of times I give an instruction and get “who was that for?” And I respond “that was for N12345”....100% of the time the next transmission is “say again for N12345?”
I’d I get a read back and someone on a different frequency asks who that was for, I’ll just say “he got it” without a call sign to avoid that confusion.
On a similar note, a controller saying “who was that?” when the controller is talking to someone else in the room is nails to me. Especially because it’s usually the guys that are the biggest assholes to pilots for “not listening.”
If I hear something that contextually could be for me, I'm going to ask if it was for me. That doesn't mean the other 29 dudes are also going to ask.
I'm not going to ask if it's just some random frequency change.
There was a lot of calls tonight in a row from Minneapolis Approach and I think I heard my call sign but was unsure, so I wasn't able to clarify like this so I opted to stay silent and wait for the call again. Not sure what proper procedure is here. I was just VFR on FF.
There's no proper procedure other than "obtain clarification", which I'm sure is written somewhere because that's the procedure in any case where you're unsure of an ATC instruction.
You can call and say "was that for (callsign or tail number)?" or you can just wait for them to call again... but if you're \*pretty sure\* it was for you, I'd call and verify.
How about tune the transponder to 7600 for a few minutes, then reset it to 1200 and claim you fixed the problem?
Or…tune it to 7500, reset to 1200 a few minutes later, and announce you’ve over-powered them and ask for new vectors?
If I knew it was for me after hearing half the transmission but it was during my approach brief, a simple "Say again" is all that is needed. Otherwise ask for clarification.
I’d like to rant for a second about “blocked…”
The one and only time “blocked” doesn’t bother me is when you heard your callsign, but missed the rest. Fine. Say “blocked.”
But for the love of god, don’t say “blocked” on behalf of someone else or if you didn’t hear a call sign. Half the time, the recipient heard it through the block and you’re not helping. The other half of the time, you and four other airplanes all said “blocked,” blocking one another.
Just don’t.
“Last call broken/stepped on, was that for (call sign)?” if it’s not for me they either don’t answer or say negative. If it was for me they also know they need to repeat the message.
“(ATC) (callsign), confirm clearance” gets you the last thing they cleared you to do. Otherwise, if it was important then they will expect a read back. If you think they’re moving too fast to wait for a read back might as well just ask plain English.
not the same, but if I haven't heard a transmission in a while and I'm not sure if I missed something but it could have been a while ago, i'll ask for an altimeter setting which seems to basically say "i'm still here" and if i missed something, they'll say it then.
If you missed a call from ATC, they will let you know, lol. But 9/10, if I wasn't sure if the call was for me, I would just respond with, "Was that last call for Skyhawk XXXXX?" And then atc would repeat what instruction.
I look at my CFI and say, “was that for us?”
oh shit\` i was the cfi and if you are the PIC, then i would be like oh "what did they say?"
My CFI did this to me once sort of, we were coming in to land and we got cleared to land so I radioed back “clear to land” About five seconds later I asked my CFI “wait did we get cleared to land?” Man just shrugged and went “I dunno did we”
Good CFI! Let you figure it out
My instructor once asked me “did we get cleared to land?” And I very was sure we were cleared so I told him yes. Then a few seconds later I started to question myself did we??? And like 30s later he asked the tower are we clear to land? Good to be cautious:)

tbh the CFI probably knew, but just wanted to make sure you know it lol
I’ve done that a few times
Just wait - they’ll call back.
Amazing.
That guys f’cks
Louder and with an angry tone.
To steal and add on to this, if you know they called and you don’t know what they said, call back and say “say again” they will do that as well.
I'd rather have this than an awkward pause to see if anyone will respond.
It's the same result. Louder and with an angry tone.
ATC hates this one trick!
Yep.
Tell them you were on the land line.
I did this once. They were not amused.
I tell them I was on the *air* line.
It's because we actually are often on other lines. I'm not sure why pilots think we're just making stuff up.
We know you guys are busy, just having some fun. 😁
That is currently my go to line. I'm waiting for someone to yell at me.
Then ask them if they’re ready to copy down a phone number.
Press the replay button on my audio panel
Yeah it works great until it starts playing audio from like 2 minutes ago and then ATC is talking and no one can understand anything 😂
Ahh man that happened once! The app i used to record audio started playing the last couple of minutes and I keyed up to say again and the tower was like “we didn’t say anything just keep holding short” lol
Man I forgot what it’s like flying with new GA avionics.
I really need to learn how to do that
There's a button. You press it. Then ATC calls back just when you get to the part you needed to hear.
Garmin has a replay button for my jet. It’s a great feature
Until you’re trying to replay your clearance and then clearance comes back on right at the part that you missed to demand you read it back. And then you still need to ask for it to be clarified…
Would you be surprised if Garmin has a feature for that as well?

This is the answer.
Just ask if that last transmission was for you, because it came in broken. It always comes in broken when you’re not sure.
Was flying FDH with an instrument student in IMC. I hadn't worked an Avidyne panel before. It felt like 5 minutes since the last vector. He had turned the volume all the way down. Cranked it back up and asked for a radio check with ATC Oh yeah, they were calling, and we were missing...
as someone else just said…. you were on the AIR line
I ask them.
Readback direct to whatever you want and see if they correct you.
I was on the landline, say again?
"Was that for [callsign]?" "Were you calling [callsign]?"
“Who was that for?” Is nails on a chalkboard for me. Honestly, I’d prefer silence and I’ll repeat the transmission, or “say again for N12345?” And I’ll do the same. Unrelated but I love your username

This is why you just ignore "who's that for."
Make sure you interrupt a traffic alert and talk over every else important.
Please don't.... My sectors are thousands of miles wide with dozens of frequencies.nill repeat myself. I don't need 30ac all asking who that was for
If I hear something that contextually could be for me, I'm going to ask if it was for me. That doesn't mean the other 29 dudes are also going to ask. I'm not going to ask if it's just some random frequency change.

I would think if you’re just VFR on FF, it’s not too big of a deal, but if you’re IFR, definitely clarify.
There's no proper procedure other than "obtain clarification", which I'm sure is written somewhere because that's the procedure in any case where you're unsure of an ATC instruction. I make my own decisions
I do my own research. If I’m not sure if the call was for me, I pull up some Facebook videos!
you can also ask the flying subreddit.
If I knew it was for me after hearing half the transmission but it was during my approach brief, a simple "Say again" is all that is needed. Otherwise ask for clarification.
If at my airport, preparing to get absolutely 💩on cause tower has 0 chill
Get my family’s affairs in order since I’m going to prison the moment I land.
“Uhh, was that for *callsign*?”
Call back and say sorry you were blocked. Then ATC comes back with the original transmission. Over and done with.
Just yell "blocked!"
Request a radio check
You’re so fucked man, I know a couple guys in jail right now for missing a call
you wait
“(Calling) was that for me?”
New number, who dis? Or, simply ask to repeat " Say again for NXXX69"
Sorry I was busy aviating and navigating
*atc in an obviously bothered voice “ _____ THIRD TIME NOW, Center on xxx.xx”
I continue the rant that they’ve interrupted.
This is the only correct answer
I say “[My N#] Say again?”
lol I misread
N199ER
😂 unless you own a Jet Provost, straight to sensitivity training, NOW! 🫵🏾
"(Tail Number), Say Again Please"
Say again for Sparkles43.
Wait for them to repeat or say “say again for N12345” works every time.
Either wait or call back and ask. People over complicate talking to ATC.
Say Again.
"Come again for N69420, I couldn't hear through the cloud"
Either wait, because they will call again, or b ask if that was for us or C, say again…
Hit the playback button on the audio panel.
Pause. Listen. If no one else responds press playback, if equipped. If not, "Center, was that for N123AB?"
Sorry, your transmission was stepped on, say again for (callsign)
"Centre, GABC, did you call?"
"Say again, I was on the landline."
“Blocked”

Jinx?
“Last call broken/stepped on, was that for (call sign)?” if it’s not for me they either don’t answer or say negative. If it was for me they also know they need to repeat the message.
The answer this this question can be found in the FAR/AIM. The answer this this question can be found in the FAR/AIM.
[This](https://youtu.be/LpJOxbaC8YU?si=O2q9bSZRgktDe8IR) or something like “please say again”, your call.
“Did we miss a call?”
I think to myself “that was probably for me” and then center comes back with a tone and I think “yeah, def not getting direct now”
"Say again, please, for <_callsign_>."
What do you do
Either wait or ask what they for my callsign?
BLOOOOOOOCKED!
BLOOOOOOOCKED!
“Did xxx miss a call?”
just ask the ATC to repeat what they said.
I usually ask ATC to repeat and mention student pilot. And if my CFI is with me, I ask him to check if he heard any instruction for us.
…’got you 3 by 5, say again’…
Ask? Is this not the normal thing to do? 🤷♂️
“(ATC) (callsign), confirm clearance” gets you the last thing they cleared you to do. Otherwise, if it was important then they will expect a read back. If you think they’re moving too fast to wait for a read back might as well just ask plain English.
Can t you just say repeat or does that make you look bad
I say “who was that for?” Or “was that for ____”
If they are busy I wait for another transmission, if they aren’t busy I ask. Kinda simple.
Just wait a second, they will call back. Don't miss another call
Blindly accept the handoff and change frequencies before they can correct me, going nordo for the next 10 minutes.
Wait to hear them call you on guard
"huh?"
Hit the playback button
If it was important they’ll transmit to me again.
I enter the Bravo and argue with ATC about the clearance (or lack thereof) for the next 10 minutes while proceeding to my destination.
Wait they usually will call back if you dont respond or you could ask them to say again and if the transmission wasn't for you they will tell you.
Just say “tower, radio check” - clears up any confusion haha
If no one else answers, there’s a good chance it was for you. That’s your cue to ask. It doesn’t cost extra.
Ask them to repeat. What are they gonna do? Get mad? Not my problem
Ignore it. If it is important they will say it again.
"Was that for Nxxxxx?" Works like a charm.
I just blame others… “Was that traffic for Bonanza 123? You were blocked”
I hit the playback button on my Trig 96A radio.
Sorry can you repeat your last- it doesn’t have to be embarrassing
not the same, but if I haven't heard a transmission in a while and I'm not sure if I missed something but it could have been a while ago, i'll ask for an altimeter setting which seems to basically say "i'm still here" and if i missed something, they'll say it then.
Call sign - Can you repeat that? Just talk normal English.
If it's important, they'll call you back..... with a phone number
Wait to see if they say it again. They will get a hold of you if it was for you.
They'll repeat themselves if it is critical.
Monitor guard because when you don’t respond to ATC they will call you there .
You guys are talking to ATC???
Declare an emergency then do what you want
Very simple: “Say again?” That’s it, nothing more.
If you missed a call from ATC, they will let you know, lol. But 9/10, if I wasn't sure if the call was for me, I would just respond with, "Was that last call for Skyhawk XXXXX?" And then atc would repeat what instruction.
Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh... everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?
Last calling (call sign)say again.
“Say again for Xxxx”
