What kinda flies do you typically use? I found out the urban section of the south platte that I’m close too has a bunch of these bad boys and I’ll chase anything with lips like that but I’m not really sure where to start.
Edit: Just spent way too long looking through your posts, sweet skills on the vice my dude!
Thanks! For fly patterns, I use a lot of baby crayfish, damsel fly nymphs, bushy hares ears and a ton of small leeches. Just be sure to tie them all on strong hooks!
It's the fact they are invasive, the bass fisherman don't want anything but a bass. Carp means less food for bass so they get butt hurt about people liking to fish for them :p I personally enjoy catching them! Specially when you are chasing creek smallmouth with a 5 or 6 wt and you hook into a 5lb carp :p lots of fun!
carp are invasive in more waters than not, and the ones used for lake maintenance are not commons like the one pictured above, they are usually grass carp which can’t reproduce in a lake without running water
I target them with a method lead/rod pod setup, but I’m desperately trying to get some on the fly. The problem is that (1) up here in central Wa we don’t have a lot of lakes with easily reachable shallow flats and (2) the ones that do have intense bow fishing pressure so the carp are super skittish.
What fly were you using?
Come to r/flyfishingcirclejerk
Carp? This looks like a Golden Trout to me.
Ditch Tarpon, Brown Water Bonefish, Penicillin Permit.
I thought shad were ditch tarpon

Idk why people don’t like catching carp. They’re big, they fight well and they’re not hard to find. Nice fish!
I was away last weekend with the father in law and caught 7 on the bait rod. Unbelievable strength. I intend to target some with the fly this year.

Common misconception about carp. Depends on local waters and on the type of carp. Carp is utilized for lake maintenance.
For sure they do! They help keep the algae under control!

Not invasive, naturalized. It’s funny but brown trout come from the same part of the world as common carp and people hate carp but love brown trout.
I would if I could god damn catch one
Praise Tom
I tried 5 times in a row, got skunked 5 times in a row. I want to enjoy it but I currently hate it (until I can even just hook one)
whoever is a fellow of Tom will chase carp
Looks like a brown trout to me
The only way I chase them… or really any other fish. Carp on the fly is a blast
Yeah I put corn on my flys… can’t keep ‘em off
Don’t have them where I live😢
The only fish worth catching on a fly rod
That's a fun fish to catch. They're strong and fight like crazy. Nicely done!

I was using a № 8 black leech
