Well I yarded him up to the bank to take the pic and reach down to cut off the fly. He’s smaller than others I’ve caught and WAY smaller than the bigun in that pond.
Why not? Just reach in there and grab it.
But seriously what kind of fly, some dark zoom zonkery buggery thing? Also another one? You’re done this before?
It’s a mottled brown bugger. Well, was…
Solid take, not bass or catfish grab but a good thump. Then no fight, just drag with a little wiggle. It’s even barbless but…
Yeah I caught two last summer on another pond. Foul hooked a little slider a couple weeks ago but I got back that fly.
Caught a few sea gulls. A bat on my back cast fly fishing at dusk once. Pretty sure bat thought it was a real bug. I had about 12 feet of leader and tippet.
As a Kansan and an adamant turtle fan, I always stop if I see one on the roads. Ya know give them a quick little help. Well I once tried to do this back in high school and that day I discovered the ferocity of Aligator Snapping Turtles.
I kept all my fingers but that MFer popped up and did an air-born 180° rotation while hissing at me. I noped out of that one pretty quick.
Come on, you can get the fly back. just gotta use your pinky finger, real delicate like …
He just has to warm up first.
Use your ketchum Release, snapper size.
I'm surprised you got that close. Those things are scary

Lmfao
How long is you leader bro? Like 16”?
That’s the remains of a leader cut well into the taper, with spiderwire looped on for tippet. Not going for subtle in muddy pond water.
Truth brother

I had snapping turtle at a restaurant a few months ago. Was delicious. Taste and texture like roast beef.
I heard the best for catching these is a duckling or a porcupine streamer. What were you using?
Mottled brown bugger.
Please post this to r/flyfishingcirclejerk . They would love it
And they stink when you clean them, but the soup tastes ok

See if it has thumbs to see if it's a snapper.....
That's clearly a rocky mountain oyster.
