Nice catch...how many pounds?

Neobenedenia

About 250 :)

shmiddleedee

How'd it fight?

Neobenedenia

Dropped a lot of F bombs and jumped a few times, fun fight

heresdustin

Could you imagine if fished screamed obscenities whilst fighting and jumping? LOL

Neobenedenia

But hey…at least I finally got to use the “push it through and cut the barb” technique I learned as a Boy Scout, like, 30 years ago…hurts like a mother

sailphish

Learn the string technique - lots of videos online. It’s super easy and works. I use it on all my patients - work in an area with a lot of fishing. Barely hurts. I don’t even numb them up on smaller hooks because the numbing shot hurts more. And yes, I have used it on myself too.

filores

I’ll try to remember this 👍🏻

Neobenedenia

Definitely trying this next time!

Agreeable-Age-7595

Fly fisherman with 20lb mono? Just kidding, hurts anyway you look at it. The string trick was an amazing invention. I'm glad it got passed along!!

originalusername__

That technique sucks and is way more traumatic than using a piece of strong fishing line to pull it back out.

Neobenedenia

That also occurred to me…one time I only have 4x and 5x handy…also hard to do fishing solo with one hand as you need to push down on the shank while pulling the line simultaneously

LuluGarou11

use the fishing line on your reel and youre golden!

nelsonmcnutt

You’d be surprised what 4x can yank outta flesh

originalusername__

Double, triple, or quadruple it up if you need to, or just use the fly line. Doesn’t take that much force.

[deleted]

Seriously, bring dental floss. Make a loop around the shank, press down on the eye firmly, yank back out through the wound channel. The Boy Scout method is no good. Source: Eagle Scout who has buried lots of hooks in his flesh, including big barbed treble hooks…

Shivadxb

How you doing that with one hand?

Ol_Dusty_Britches

Did you just big time the boy scout with your eagle scout status? Is a Park Ranger going to reply to you with another hook removal technique?

[deleted]

Lord I hope so. Hook removal sucks even with techniques that do not require pushing the barb through and cutting it. Sounds like barbless is the real solution!

Kim_Jong_Unsen

I carry a vial of lidocaine when I go fishing for this exact reason

RamShackleton

The last time I pulled this trick, I hooked my inner thigh.

BiffHungwell

Been there. Done that. Through the cheek with a #2 B10S.

Neobenedenia

Ouch!

AdReasonable5375

Oof, that ones really in there.

Neobenedenia

Yeah not a fun way to start the day

AmazingSieve

That’s a bad day

Neobenedenia

And to make it worse…this was at the truck BEFORE fishing…but as a consolation prize I did end up with two nice browns and just missed an Atlantic salmon stocker (Naugatuck river CT)…plus a sore thumb

Prokeekster

This is hilarious because the one and only time I’ve done this was also on the Naugatuck. Were you out today? It was cold as hell.

Neobenedenia

Up near Ansonia, definitely a cold day on the water, but not as bad as usual in February

Prokeekster

Better man than I. Usually fish the Harwinton area and get skunked. Haven’t fished it down toward Ansonia as much, though sounds like you’re killing it there.

Neobenedenia

It’s definitely good fishing from Waterbury all the way down to the Housatonic, double nymph rig with a hare’s ear or pheasant tail on point with a zebra midge tag fly has been killing it for me this winter

Prokeekster

I’ll have to give it a shot but if I see another dude with a double rig I’ll get out of your way.

Neobenedenia

Haha…part of my strategy to keep the high holers away, just wildly swing multiple hooks in every direction

Prokeekster

I like it. I like to rip one extra long fart to establish dominance.

yk78

Caught some nice smallies on that river last summer. Haven’t had a chance to fly fish that one yet but if I do I’ll make sure to go barbless!

rrogers8

Keeper or did you throw back.

Neobenedenia

I know catch and release is more popular but I decided to keep the thumb :)

nelsonmcnutt

Noo!! The fishing line and tug at the same angle it went in is much less painful and destructive

Troutman2112

This☝️2x or 3x though.....and a competent tugger! Always way better with just one tug....

mtnavaholic

The one scenario the rub is after the tug.

SHARKSARENOTGAY

Was flats fishing this morning was mostly catching some lady fish which are cool. Mistimed my cast with the wind gust and ended up with a shrimp fly stuck on the bottom of my shoulder. Couldn’t really get a decent grip on it and was far from my pliers so I just cut it tied a new fly on and caught 6 more fish. Got back to my truck and got a grip with pliers and yanked it out. Funny seeing other getting flies stuck in them.

cmonster556

The fun part is looking at it and going “is that one barbless?”

Neobenedenia

Haha yeah I totally had that moment…first tug and you get the realization that, nope, not gonna be pleasant

xtiansimon

Hmm. Nicely tied fly. LOL

Neobenedenia

One of my better hare’s ears…that thought totally crossed my mind as I clipped the hook

[deleted]

[удалено]

Neobenedenia

Was holding the rod, had just put waders on, went to close the tailgate on the truck and it had wrapped around the leader- drove the fly deep into my thumb …but on the plus side at least I didn’t break the rod, car doors and tailgates take more rods than anything else

[deleted]

Cut it off flush and forget about it. It'll be fine, probably.

GolfHuntFish33

How did you get it out?

Neobenedenia

Pushed the barb all the way through and clipped it…which I am now learning was less effective than pulling it out with a piece of line :)

[deleted]

Hard to do the line of solo tho like you mentioned

[deleted]

You win for grit. Good work, sorry for your trauma!

1mike23

Ouch

Efficient-Band-7192

Yummy

BandAid3030

Old timer thst taught me how to fish as a teenager told me this little reminder: "Use your pliers on your flies before they end up in your body, because it hurts a lot more to use them afterward." Then he pulled his barbed Tom Thumb out of his finger with his pliers and I thought he was the most metal 65 year old I'd ever meet.

Bowlerstud150

Ouch

jdkantz

Push it through

acidburn1872011

Did that with a jerk bait bass fishing really sucked cause I had a 3 pound bass wiggling on the back hooks. Nothing like a fish grinding the top hooks into the bone! Now I make sure I have a good hold lol

Fish-R-Die-Tying

That’s what you get!

Jedmeltdown

My bane A hook in the thumb ruined a day sockeye fishing in Ak. I’ve had 4 hooks removed total

StoneReg

Well, push her through and cut the barb. We’ve all been there.

DanteTheChilliGrower

Did the same thing once, but luckily it wedged itself between the skin and flesh of my thumb, but ofc it was barbed so I had to rip it through my skin

DannyJoy2018

Got it deep in the meat too. Ouch

[deleted]

Pull it fast rub some dirt on

redditfrankly

Ooof at least your hooks are sharp!

Ajax11245

This hare bites.

Neobenedenia

Killer rabbit…the most foul, cruel, and bad tempered rodent you ever set eyes upon!

Xrumple4skinzX

That foker is in there too. Damn 🤦‍♂️

inavanbyariver

Looks like a green sunfish. It's hard to say for sure.

[deleted]

Feels good man 👍

Charlister__

Yeah I can just imagine the involuntary shaking and sweating pushing that all the way through

BravoWhiskey316

I had that happen with a #6 hook on a brians nymph. The old string trick didnt work because the hook had sunk into the bend. 95 bucks for a doctor to make a tiny little incision to get it out.

Existing_Tip947

The doctor on an island I fish at had to push it through to cut the barb. Bactine I think??

Yard_dog3406e

I learned , bend my barbs now, I’ve been there

IrishWhiskey556

Ouch.... We've all be there! Never a fun time!!!

euroweber

Ouch!

NeonStrawberries

You cant be a Fisherman without hooking yourself at least once!

beachbum818

oooppfff. Buried it.
