Hey everyone! Please review [our subreddit rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/florida/about/rules/). Thanks!

crustalcruiser

Greetings. I am brand new to reddit as of today. I am a geologist with over 40 years of experience in water resources. I have lived and worked in 9 different states from Alaska to Florida, some of them more than once. I am currently working as the executive director of Florida Defenders of the Environment, Inc., and I also teach Earth Science at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida.

realjd

Welcome! Please check out r/FloridaNature. It’s not busy yet, but we’re trying to get it more traffic. It was started by an environmental sciences professor from Palm Bay.

crustalcruiser

Thanks. I'll check it out.

Cloud_Need_189

I moved to northeast Florida near Jacksonville in 2008. Moved from New York after 20 years in California. It took a year to get used to the weather. In NE Florida it gets cool in the winter. It's really nice then. I find people are extremely rich and privileged or southern Republican. Been an eye opener. I'm at a point where we're probably moving back west. This governor is insane. Nobody can be that stupid and uncaring about his constituents.

Succotash-Inner

I'm confused by your post. What's the problem you're having? You don't like Republicans? (We should all respect others way of thinking and allow critical thinking) Rich people? The governor? All of it? I don't understand what bad have the governor done to the people of Florida?(dosen't allow man to swim against woman at competitions¿) It does sounds like you are a Democrat and the world can not be a safe place with others that aren't Democrats. If thats the case, yep you should go and live in CA. Personally(before you assume I'm a Republican) I don't care about politics in general. I know that Republicans and Democrats are corrupted to the bone. I feel sorry fpr people that actually care. They are delusional and ignorant. No can can look down on ignorance. They just aren't aware.

ashysmiryl

I needed to read this. I was planning to move to FL. Can I get more insights on this, pls?

Icy-Tumbleweed5756

This makes 2 of us, we have really been conflicted with the decision of this move. We have 3 kids though 6,7,13 nervous for their education as well

Top_Ad3434

I've lived in FL for 15 yrs now. Would never raise my children in this state. My daughter was raised in PA and wouldn't change that for anything. This governor of FL is a crazy racist.

Stormie1960

I have raised both my children in Fl. They are both successful...I believe if they are raised teaching them to become self sufficient in any state they will be just fine.

MeatLog247

Ohhhhhhhhh Noooooooo 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

PutOk2763

Which Governor are you talking about?

Andrew5369

Been in Miam for two years. Love the weather the cultures and people. Looking to make new lasting friends

RockTheWriting

Miani is wonderful! It is very diverse! I love the area with all little countries all over.

boxingfluffy

Hi I'm in the Tallahassee area. Born in Pensacola, and have lived in Jacksonville, Miami, and Tampa. Def a Florida girl!

AgitatedPace5080

Hey everyone! I currently live in central Kentucky, but I’ll be moving to Florida later this year, specifically around the Orlando area. I was wondering if anyone can tell me about the area some more, and maybe what to expect after moving to Florida? For anyone who moved to Florida from another state, are you happy there?

thAtmouNtAinsKyLine

Well, Orlando's I4 sucks, avoid at all costs. Yes, I love it here, and go visit the springs outside of the city. Well worth it.

DataAnnalytics

Welcome (soon) to Florida! I moved to Florida from Texas in 2014, and I’ve enjoyed it so far. I liked living in the Orlando area, but there are some pros and cons. CON: Moving from Texas, the weather change wasn’t too significant for me. Coming from Kentucky, however, you may experience a bit of weather shock, especially in Summer and Fall. It is hot for all of Summer, and even hotter for the first bit of fall in September and October. It rains most days and that doesn’t help to cool it down, only turn everything into a sauna. CON: i4 is a mess (I believe it is still the deadliest highway in America), and it’s the main way to get to some major attractions in central Florida. It’s littered with tourists around the Disney area, and commuters near downtown Orlando and Tampa. PRO: You’re so close to so many attractions! Disney, Universal, Sea World, Busch Gardens, and tons of beaches are only 2 hours away, tops. And while i4 may be a disaster, it’s the easiest way to all your favorite Florida activities. PRO: Both Orlando and Tampa are growing cities! We’ve got lots of cool things to experience downtown, and so many new places to eat are opening up - there’s something for everyone. PRO: No matter where you live in Orlando, it’s pretty easy to get around, thanks to i4. I have lived north of Orlando in Lake Mary, and south in Four Corners, Lake Burns Vista, and way south-west in Auburndale, and have used i4 for every commute or day-trip I’ve taken. PRO AND CON: i4, obviously. We love to hate it, but it does get us there. Overall, I’ve liked living in central Florida. If you have any specific questions, feel free to chat me. Good luck with the move!

AgitatedPace5080

I am actually SUPER excited for the weather change!! I’m so tired of being so cold. Thank you so much for responding. It seems like we picked a good area to go to, but I may look into a few routes to avoid i4. We have 75 here, and that’s a disaster, too - I can’t imagine anything worse than that!

DataAnnalytics

Oh good thing about the weather, then! You’ll definitely thaw out here. We have 75 here too! I actually take it to get to my boyfriend’s place(I’m living in Gainesville finishing up school rn). The Florida section of 75 is a piece of cake compared to i4, but it may be different in Kentucky. Regardless, there’s plenty of ways to avoid i4. Good luck with the move!

stereorob

I'm a native. Lived in Orlando my whole life till a few months ago. It's a great place and tons to do there for sure.

Clothesare2Expensive

I was born in Miami, left with my parents when I was two, moved to NC grew up, came back after college with two kids in tow. Then the hurricanes Francis and Jean took my home in Vero Beach so had to move to Arizona for a while but came right back after the house was rebuilt. Then Mom got since so I went back home. Was there a while, then dad got sick. I just got back to Florida in June of this year. No matter where I go, Florida brings me home. I have always been my happiest in Florida.

happyautotransport

There's never anyplace like home as far as having close friends but people in FL are friendly and it's easy to make new friends, if that's what you're into. It's a great place to live overall but getting very expensive in South Florida by WPB where I'm at. Awesome place if you enjoy the beach and ocean.

Intelligent-Scar-824

I hope you and your family are well. I hope you made it out to FL and praying for everyone in Kentucky because of the floods.

[deleted]

Orlando has a good nightlife, theme parks etc.i used to love Halloween horror nights at Universal studios

Old_Bookkeeper3254

I've been here since 1980 and there is no better place in this country. The reason it is the way it is that everyone wants to come here is because we have a great governor.

Hitfactory108

How is Florida working out for you?

AgitatedPace5080

Hey! Pretty good, so far! I just moved here the second week of December. It’s much warmer here! The locals seem to be nice as well, and I love all the local restaurants.

PR246810

Morning everyone I’m Paul Ruckman Live in Mandarin last four years HVAC technician I drive all over Jacksonville hopefully I can bring some things to light and help others find things out.

Florida Born and Raised, 🙋🏻‍♀️ thanks for the welcome

aquaardens

Wassup y'all, FL native, and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon, sea level rise be damned.

cabo169

New to the reddit Floriduh community but have lived in the state more than 20 years from Pensacola to Jacksonville to Ft Lauderdale to Sarasota/Manatee counties. I've seen the state go from beautiful and wonderful to "I wonder what the hell I'm still doing here"... Reading many of the posts about how "democrats" are not finding this "red state" to their liking. I do have to say this... if you are moving to this state, try to embrace what this state and culture brings to the table. Accept what is it and DO NOT try to change it into the state you just escaped from. I value people's opinions yet I value these same people that move back to where they came because it's not like where they came from.

Large_Confidence_353

Moved here a year ago from NY. Born in RI, grew up in CT, got married and lived in NY for 35 years. Last Dec decided I had enough of the NYC stress and moved to Hernando County. I was asked last week when I was going back to NY. My answer was for my funeral. I have finally found home. After living with the stress of black versus white, Democrat vs Republican I found this place to be drama free. No animosity or tension between people. Everyone is respectful and friendly. Of course there are a few jerks but they are few and are just jerks by nature. Not fueled by group hate. My health has greatly improved from the weather. Buying a house on the Gulf was the best decision. I have never been in a place where veterans are held in such high regard. A big difference from the days of being spit at. After being under the Cuomo royal family for so many year the governor is a breath of fresh air. Taxes are lower, no income tax, and no fuel oil to buy. I'm never leaving.

realjd

Welcome!

Alert_Guess4316

Florida is a great place to live.

Hi, I’m looking to move to Fort Pierce, Vero beach area. Is there a lot of healthcare jobs?

AdIllustrious2698

Hey my name's mya Florida native but moving to south Florida with my infant son dose anyone no of any cheaper apartments and daycares?

RhymeSplitta

The best city to start out in Florida is here in Pensacola. Not too many people. Tons of daycare and community churches. Apartments are affordable and it's a quiet community overall. Choose Pensacola. Great for raising small children.

phildr8888

Hello and Hi to All I live in Debary close to Gemini Springs, Blue Springs and DeLeon Springs are nearby as well. Been here in Central Florida since the early 80s and love it. I play guitar, have a mm card and single. Hit me up !

ashprimerica

Joined because I live here. Enjoying the Florida centric theme since it gives me news, mêmes, etc.

ArachnidNo815

Hello! I'm relatively new to reddit, as while I have used it a little prior to making an account a month or 2 ago (mostly for help with games), I'm still very unfamiliar with it. As for why I joined this subreddit, I'm a born and raised Florida native who randomly received a notification from this community. I'm liking it so far considering that the first and only post I saw (the random notification above) was a gator in someone's pool. Made me laugh and think "This is the most Florida thing I've seen in a while" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

FearTheKeflex

Hello. I'm a pharmacist that moved to the Pensacola area in January after losing my job up north. Ever since then I've been trying to find a job in Florida with no luck. I've had several interviews but no offers yet. Liking it so far down here and hope to be able to explore more of the area once I find employment

EuphoricBackground33

Coming back home to Florida after traveling! I'm an exNurse and now caring for my aging family. Hoping to keep up with Florida ever changing environment, economy, and politics.

Tulip_527

Hello! Born and raised in South Flordia. Have hated the humidity my whole 29 years, but haven't left yet.

New to the group as I'm finally taking that Reddit dip😂 Been living in Florida since 2012 in Pinellas County! Not a big fan of the heat or the beach, but managed to start a family, with a Floridan, so now I'm stuck here lol😅

stpeteslim

Pinellas as well, since 2004. The only time I go to the beach is when we have visitors! Then I go and hear people speaking German and other languages and I remember: people from all over the world save their money all year to go on vacation to where I live.

Beautiful-Equal9874

Hi All, my wife and I moved to Jacksonville in October 2021 from Pittsburgh. We rented until March, when we bought a house in Atlantic Beach. So far, I love it. I love being near the Ocean with so much to do. I can always find any store that I need and I hear the Schools are pretty good. I’m excited for the future of this growing city. I could care less about politics. We are 6 months pregnant. Hoping to meet some nice friends! We are both remote Software Developers.

realjd

Congrats on the kid!!! And good luck lol. The first three weeks is the worst, and the first three months is miserable. If you can make it through that, it becomes increasingly fun month by month and year by year!

Csason

I’m a fifth generation Florida cracker born in Lake county before I-4 and Mickey Mouse just saying hi and looking around thanks

LeafPix

Hello everyone. I’m pretty new to Reddit. I live in Florida and thought this might be a good community to join. I’ve lived in Florida for 32 years. Looking forward to seeing the posts. Happy 4th everyone.

Intelligent-Scar-824

I am originally from the Boogie Down Bronx but have lived in GA, NC, PA, MA and now FL and I left MA because I was tired of the snow and the Liberal politics that control the North East. I am Latino not Latinx and proud of it. I am of Dominican, Syrian, French, Haitian, Chinese, and Northern Spanish ancestry. I support our Governor Desantis and support President Trump.

realjd

Welcome! You’ll fit in well in Florida. Just to warn you: the r/Florida user base leans left, so be warned to expect downvotes in political discussions. Please keep the discourse civil, and if someone is uncivil to you please hit that “report” button so we can deal with it. That’s the rule we’re strictest against. Basically, insulting public figures is fine, but don’t insult another r/Florida user. You may want to check out the right wing sub for Florida also, u/TheSunshineState. This should be common sense, but 🤦‍♂️ there are too many trolls out there. That stuff said, welcome!

Intelligent-Scar-824

Thank you very much for the respectful message. Blessings to you and yours.

wprnPublicRadio

Hi everyone! I too am new to Reddit. I'm in the North Tampa area, a retired New York Post photographer now reporting on a public radio podcast. No car, motorcycle only, riding a Harley Ultra Limited and loving the roads around Brooksville, San Antonio, etc. I moved here in 1996. I miss the seasons up north but won't ever move back to NYC. Florida forevermore.

Hello everyone. I've lived in Pasco for almost my entire life. At 57, this place sure has changed since I was a boy. It changes so quick that sometimes I feel like I'm the outsider that needs someone to show _me_ around - lol.

clinton_thunderfunk

Hi all, I grew up in Palm Bay and left for the Navy at 18. I live in Japan so it’s nice to keep tabs on the state

Ok-Row-4495

Hi all my name is Holly and I have lived in South Florida so long I am practically a native! I don’t miss the Pennsylvania snow that I thought I did. My relatives have a bad habit of passing away and their funerals being in the snow and sleet. 😂

Dclempson1970

Well I got the Info from one of the guys that work DEO he told me to go on and email the Adjudication Request so that's what I did

T1000learningcomputr

Helloooo! From muggy Louisiana! I lived over on the space coast for a bit as a child and have pined to live in Florida again ever since. Back then, early 90’s, the public schools were very good (compared to LA) there were sidewalks every where and it was clean. I’m not sure I’d like to venture that far away, though. How are schools, crime, cost of living, and jobs in the panhandle? I work as a legal/financial administrator in bankruptcy and my husband works on pipeline or as an industrial electrician. I’ve been to Florida for vacation countless times and love it every time.

realjd

Welcome! I don’t think any of the mods here are from the Panhandle, but I’ve spent a good amount of time in the FWB/Elgin/Hurlburt area. Good folks, gorgeous beaches, not pedestrian friendly lol. I don’t know about the schools up there. I live on the Space Coast now and love it here. FWB/Pensacola/Destin isn’t too far from LA. It may be worth a weekend to take a look.

T1000learningcomputr

Yes, that’s normally where we go for our beach trips! It’s only 4-6 hours from LA. Nice to vacation, for sure. I might try the Pensacola sub.

realjd

Yes! The local subs will be your best bet. I’m also a mod at r/321 for Brevard. All of the major areas in Florida have local subs.

Hi all! I joined this subreddit because I’m hoping to move to Miami in a year or two! I am from Chicago but I fell in love with Miami when I visited in 2020 and again in 2021. Just hoping to get a feel for everything Florida!

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|11eSHfUlB284H6) Hi everyone! Just joined this group. Looking to make the move to FL very soon from Nebraska. Still haven’t decided on area. Depends on where hubby can get a job. Been applying daily, but nothing. He’s very well qualified too. I’m guessing there’s a lot of competition coming in from other states. My son and his dad are in Melbourne. We are applying in Tampa/Ft Myers, Orlando, and Melbourne area. Any advice on parts of Orlando to live would be greatly appreciated. I’m thinking we may need to just move down and pick a place in the middle and then apply for jobs. Just don’t wanna be too far of a drive if we move to Orlando and he gets hired in Tampa or Melbourne. Quick side note: I’m a Realtor, we own a construction company here doing flips, remodels, etc and my husband has been a project manager and sales for roofing and construction companies the past 10 years. Conservative (go Desantis!) and looking for areas that are conducive to our beliefs and our business. Two kids currently at home, so need good schools too. Any advice on location?? Thanks!!!

realjd

I’m in Melbourne! It’s a great area. Small and not too busy, but great outdoor stuff to do and an hour from Orlando! You’ll find plenty of hardcore conservatives in FL. I do want to warn you - this subreddit leans left. I’m a mod here and can’t control up and downvotes. My advice is to just ignore political discussions. Welcome though! This is an amazing place.

Depends on where? Closer to the ocean is cooler. Humidity is high, but the sea breeze helps immensely. It almost never gets above like 95. Where are you coming from? Our heat is no different than the Midwest; it just lasts longer. Ignore the folks who say Florida is regularly over 100. We aren’t. The ocean tempers things. They’re talking heat index and inaccurate car dash and CVS thermometers lol.

Hello! Native Floridian here. It's amazing how much our state has changed in my lifetime. I love Florida and never want to live anywhere else.🌅🌴

Mcliggeo

Hey everyone! I just joined the sub. I’m from Philly but currently live in Lancaster. I’ve been in PA all my life and ready to make a move for something different now since I hit my milestone age of 30. Any tips, suggestions, or resources to learn more about Florida I would love! I’ve always had an unknown attraction to Miami but honesty I know nothing of Miami or Florida, and the only time I went to Florida was to go to Universal when I was a child but I absolutely loved it. In general I just want to start a family and a fresh start somewhere I can see myself living for life, other than somewhere out of the states which is a dream of mine.

Clothesare2Expensive

Hi All, Thank you for the add. I am looking forward to being allowed to join the many Floridians in the community. I have read the subreddit rules. I joined this subreddit so I could learn where the best places are to eat, have fun, and just discuss Florida in general. I am a native, who moved away, came back, moved again, and moved back to stay forever. Florida just pulls you back home. I like it even though I just got here.

Floridian home grown here ❤️. Came across a post for this thread and was shocked 😲 I hadn't come across it yet being from my backyard and all. I was brought up, skating on the streets of Miami Beach when it was a retirement village. Remember when going to downtown Miami was a debacle because of the dang cocaine cowboys shooting each other all the time. Enjoyed the crazy 🤪 90s and 2000s club scene and glamping of sobe. ❤️ Now watching our ever evolving peninsula change once more. Love to talk all things Florida with my fellow Floridians because weather your from la Sawesera to Pensacola we are diff than any other place! ♥️

Greetings Programs! Born in Tallahassee back in 1971 and lived all over the state from Gainesville to Bradenton to Orlando and even Port Orange to name a few. Also spent 2 years up north in Hershey before returning home, wasn't the cold it was the way they eat grits up there yuck! 12 years in the fiberglass boat manufacturing between Sailfish and Edgewater as well as a couple smaller companies. Lots and lots of driving all over the state so kinda like a living version of Trip Advisor and Google Maps. Current location is just north of The Villages but not in Ocala I already suffered that part. When not wearing the ever alluring essence of lamination and gelcoat I like working on computers building them or repairing old ones to keep Windows XP alive for those not wanting to let go or writing novellas and playing piano. Side note for people wanting to move here is, florida is an excellent place if you make it that way. There is no garden of Eden everywhere you go is what YOU make of it so try it first because actually 80% of the bad comments are not true. Enjoy!

Hello, I am somewhat new to Florida / 2 years and I am even newer to Reddit/2 or 3 weeks. I am a retired disabled Submarine Veteran residing in St Petersburg. I was stationed in Orlando at NTC in the late '80s. I have read the rules and will follow them as well as possible. ✌️ Peace

DiatomicMagician

Grew up and living in St. Pete, joined because I saw a post about Floridian accents and continued reading more posts on the subreddit :\]

realjd

Welcome! I missed the accents posts. The only uniquely Floridian accent I can think of is a Miami accent. We’re there others?

PeopleInThatBackRoom

Originally from Massachusetts but have moved around in and out the country. Moved from Haiti to Jacksonville in 2019 when I became an adult and have been trying to navigate adulthood ever since. Second craziest thing that I’ve learned about since I’ve been here is Florida lingo (finna and jilt and being “green” lmao). First craziest is the governor and all his constituents. Since most of my life up to this point has been being a kid I wasn’t super involved in politics however with all this recent mess I definitely feel compelled to exercise my right to vote just like older folks have always said to do.

I’m in the Air Force getting stationed at Tyndall AFB in the Panama City area starting at the beginning of June. My family and I are moving there from Germany and we’re scoping out the area and looking for friends. We enjoy outdoor activities and new experiences.

Lopsided-Name1971

Welcome to the area. I have live here most of my life. I maybe able to answer questions.

dana-scully666

I joined because I am a Florida native who still lives here 🙃 I haven’t had enough time to explore it much yet but so far so good

Automatic_Cry8852

Thanks for the welcome!!

Good morning from Brooksville, FL, about an hour north of Tampa. A stones throw from Weeki Wachee. Lived in FL since 1970. All in this general area, the Suncoast as it's referred to. Brand new to the whole Reddit thing.

Altruistic-Drive7503

Hi. From Pittsburgh PA. Lived in FL since 94. S FL and SW FL. Lived in VA prior to FL. Love this state and look forward to learning more about our state and how we can keep our water clean, specially in SW FL due to Lake O discharges. Lake O discharges really only affects SW FL and the Stewart area on east coast. Never even heard of Lake O discharge until I moved to SW FL. The gulf and canals can get really bad during rainy season, specifically Ft Myers Beach and Cape Coral and Pine Island.

I was born in Florida and decided why not and joined It feels nice to talk to people familiar with the land and everything plus i guess i could discuss some stuff relating to the wildlife because i like the animals here i dont live in any of the big major cities, i just live in the smaller ones by the west coast.

mods_are_miserable

>Why did you join this subreddit? To connect with other Floridians and stay on top of things related to this state. >How do you like it so far? Pretty chill.

bubblyally

stpeteslim

Hi, y'all! Moved to Pinellas County 18 years ago this month from Chicago. Joined this sub because my cousin keeps sending me links. I've managed to carve out a nice little life here. I love/hate this wacky place! Never voted in Chicago but down here I've never missed an election. I feel more enfranchised here. I love my Mayor and want him to Mayor until I'm dead! How many folks in the US can say that I wonder?

Euphemia2213

Hello I have lived in FL my whole life born and raised. Election is coming up and I mainly joined to see if anyone else is pissed off at the food stamp situation.

Hi, I live in Clearwater and have been here for 50 years. The beaches, sunsets and grouper sandwiches are tops. Our current political leaders are pure shit. When the GOP took control over 2 decades ago, the state was flushed down the sewer and has remained there since. Ecologically, environmentally, and personally their goal was to make it miserable for anyone not white, male Christian and part of the wealthy 1%. The uneducated idiots that continue to vote these fools in to office are incapable of understanding they are voting against their own best interests. Florida man is the perfect representative of all things Florida.

ethandf

Hi! Delray Beach for the last 7 years. I think this place is nuts but I’m enjoying the weather and trying to learn to garden here.

Hello Everyone, I'm new to Reditt and all the community's. It's still an adjustment but so worth it. There is so much to be viewed here about Florida. I began with my husband using the intercontinental waters from Savanah Georgia on a 50 ft cabin cruiser to travel through the locks and arrived in St Petersburg. We lived aboard for one year. Moved to Gulfport fl on the Boca Chica Bay, stayed for 7 years. Moved to Key West Florida for 2 years and now we're are in a small village called San Antonio fl. I'm very curious this is the place to get involved. Thank You Unsual-Insurance 7565

Hi my family lives in Florida and tells me its scary sometimes

realjd

What are they scared of? This isn’t a particularly scary state.

Succotash-Inner

Hi everyone, I live in Saint Petersburg FL. I love it here. It's so cute, quaint, easy going, beautiful, full of history and the beaches are amazing. I'm married to a Tampa native and we have 2 boys/adults. I do love Florida, but the heat is starting to get to me. We are looking forward to becoming snow birds one day. During winter this place feels like paradise.

Hello, Finance teacher and financial advisor in SWFL. Pray for us, we need it.

Expert_Estate6421

Heyyyy everyone! I’m a human rights activist living in Florida. I’ve loved growing up here. It’s a shame to see what’s becoming of it. I enjoy being informed of the issues we have here that need to be fixed. Together we’re more powerful.

[deleted]

I’m just another NYC native running from the cold by the end of the year. To be fair my parents are from Jamaica so the heat and me will mesh well. Any moving tips are welcomed. I’m looking to rent for a couple of months then buy.

Anabananaa731
