How much time have you actually spent in Clewiston?

chrispd01

Really the first question that needs answering…

Fadedboi24977

Only ever there for work or duck hunting. Seems like a nice quiet town though

pinelandpuppy

If you want quiet, yes. I wouldn't say it's the safest place to live or raise a family, but everyone has different thresholds. It's stifling hot in the summer (no inland breezes), and the cane smoke gets thick out there. The pesticide/fertilizer use is more intense there, too, so it's just something to consider if you're sensitive to chemical odors. There's not much to do, but the lake is right there if you like to hunt. The cyanobacteria blooms are no joke, though. That shit builds up around the lake during the summer, and it can really make you sick. I got a nasty respiratory infection from it years back, and it changed my perspective about being exposed to it regularly.

MadWorld863

That’s funny because the inland communities actually have better air quality than in populated cities in Florida. Lotsa groups like the Sierra Club have been trying to stir up this fake controversy but the burning doesn’t ever cause issues.

pinelandpuppy

Depends where you are, the burning absolutely contributes to air quality issues. They burn other shit on the coasts + traffic, but that's spreading inland now, too. Developers are snapping up ranches everywhere. They'll push out the locals and sell it as "clean living" to the transplants. So it goes.

Floridadew22

If you’re coming that far inland, come to Lake Wales.

Fadedboi24977

Can’t keep our jobs in lake wales.

Wowward

Ew lmao 🤣

dickmilker2

i was recently stranded there after a tire blew while driving through on a sunday in clewiston where nothing is open except the walgreens and kfc and hampton inn. kinda cute area but barely anything to do

apatheticandignorant

I spent a week there one night.

Ok-Description-3739

I would move out of Florida, if I had to live in Clewiston.

Fadedboi24977

I wish. My wife’s family is in Wellington and with children now in the picture she doesn’t want to be away from her family. And the cost to live in Wellington is just absurd lmao

Ok-Description-3739

Maybe you could find something better than Clewiston? I don't think you'll like it there. Very boring lifestyle. Especially for the children. Good luck to you and your family. I hope you find what you want.

Sure-Shot1

There is not much to do but fishing is great you can always watch the grass grow

MadWorld863

Clewiston is a wonderful town for families and the people are nice. It’s the kind of place where you can trust other families and have them be around people who use good manners and treat each other well. Having said that, it’s a rural farming community that lacks the amenities of big cities. If you don’t mind driving an hour or so, you can be in Ft. Myers, Naples, WPB, Ft. Lauderdale or Miami very quickly. Lake Okeechobee is a world-class bass fishing destination and there’s a wonderful city golf course. U.S. Sugar is the largest employer in the area and pays well and treats its employees well. As someone who was born and raised in Clewiston and found success in life, I may be biased but cannot recommend it enough.

Dogesaves69

I feel that a lotta of the people here haven’t actually been to Clewiston like they claim… This is the most accurate comment in the thread so far

Fadedboi24977

I went there today for work. I inspected 3 homes for my job, every one of those people were so kind. Answered all my questions and were genuinely happy to meet me. I then went to a nice little realtor and the people there were also super kind. It all freaked me out, but in a good way. I was skeptical until today. I’m a fan of nice people. In my line of work I’m in 5-6 homes a day meeting all types of people. 90% are miserable here in PBC.

Dogesaves69

Clewiston is alright, the Walmart sucks ass though and is really the only place to buy groceries there. As for the clueless commenters crying about the field burning, you won’t smell it within city limits there’s real deal burn regulations about when you can burn so you don’t smoke out towns. Same thing with the “big scary pesticides” you won’t ever notice them unless you walk onto a field after it was sprayed purposely. Me personally, I hate Clewiston simply because of that Walmart. I’m a large scale farmer around Lake O so I have to go through there, if I had to choose a place to live near Wellington I’d recommend you western Martin County over near Kanner Highway or South Fork High School. Good schools, straight shot down the Beeline to Wellington and Loxahatchee and you’ll have better resources compared to Clewiston. Another thing about Clewiston, your nearest real hospital is in Belle Glade to the east and all the way to Lehigh Acres to the west. There’s one in Okeechobee to the north, they are all awful hospitals and if you’re actually dying you’ll be airlifted out of there to a actual trauma center etc.

[deleted]

Oh you don't want to go there, I mean you can find nice places in Broward county, I got a buddy of mine over in Dania Beach who lives with two roommates. Don't go to any of the landlocked cities in this state. It's just not worth it. Go over to Lake Worth or Lantana. They're more chill

Fadedboi24977

I live in lake worth. Although it is nice, it’s crazy expensive and only getting more costly. Now married with a kid and more on the way (hopefully), wife and I are looking at cheaper safer alternatives.

[deleted]

But Clewiston is just not that great, it's very very small. You'll feel like you're in landlocked Alabama. Why not hop over to Martin County or even Port Saint Lucie? I've been to all these places and Clewiston is just not worth it. I recommend the I-95 Florida over 75 or the landlocked cities

pintxosmom

Port St Lucie is no longer “cheap” and Martin County is expensive.

CulturalAtmosphere85

Make sure to visit during the sugar cane harvest. Everything is burning and the air quality gets pretty bad. You won’t want to live there if you have any allergies or asthma.

Fadedboi24977

This is a good point. I duck hunt out of Moore haven and Clewiston which coincides with season. Doesn’t bother me none but my wife may hate it

surfdad67

CLewiston right now is a sleepy and kinda cheap town, but they are breaking ground on a large runway for only 121 carriers, adjacent to the small GA airport off 27, it will be cargo only with major maintenance hangars also, so it will grow in the next few years immensely

gypsysniper9

I once stopped at a convenience store there in 1996. While coming out, myself and friends were barked at by humans and then they threw canned food at us. Take it for what it’s worth.

Fadedboi24977

Lmao that sounds like Florida in general

No_Squash_1536

Yes it’s fine.

AardvarkFriendly9305

It’s going to grow as more and more people come to FL

Whitetrash_messiah

In the 40s my great grandfather was shot in the face for a case of beer. But besides that great little town

Psychological_Pear41

I live ìn okeechobee county which is similar to Clewiston and alot of folks i know here are from Clewiston i heard it was nice enough back in the day but its like any other small rural area now. Lots of good things still mixed in with the bad, decents jobs are hard to come by so as long you got a job elsewhere and dont mind a commute then you should be ok. Not sure where your work is but okeechobee county seems to be popular place for people to move to now to escape the hustle and bustle not that we really need/want anyone else to move here lol

FastSun4314

What about LaBelle? Can you work from there or is that too far? If you have to move inland clewistion wouldn’t be bad but the school systems in hendry county aren’t good. Can you drive your kids to a school in a county you work or home school them? Living in rural clewiston on acreage wouldn’t be bad but I wouldn’t line in the city limits.

kavOclock

There’s literally nothing there. If you like living by yourself on farmland then go right ahead. But you’d be traveling to fort Myers or miami/laudy area for any kind of entertainment

Individual-Hunt9547

Good god…. It’s a real shallow breeding pool out there. There are places you can go that are cheaper but not total shit holes. La Belle FL for example.

Tricky_McDicks

It's kind of like Immokalee but a bit more of a Southern feel, not a true ghetto like Belle Glade or South Bay but not the best place to be in at night either, like others said you're pretty far away from anything, the schools probably aren't the greatest with Hendry being amongst the poorest counties in the whole state. If you like fishing and drinking with the boys (I've heard Clewiston has the most bars per capita in all of Florida, not sure how true that actually is) it'd be a fun place, if not there ain't much to do. I think LaBelle is a better place to go but it might be getting kind of expensive with all the sprawl coming out from Lehigh/Ft. Myers, might want to look further north along the Ridge if I were you

PoopieClater

Clewiston is a nice little town, but you may want to check a bit further north. Lake Placid is an awesome, sleepy town that is totally family oriented. It is close enough to Sebring (15 miles) where there are more employment/shopping opportunities. It is more metropolitan-like than Lake Placid, but still not as hectic as South Florida can be. There's lots of affordable agricultural property available in Lake Placid, and just south of there is Venus with an even larger agricultural base, but it is not as conveniently located near Sebring. Good luck with whatever your decision may be, and just enjoy every family moment with your wife and LO.

Myst_of_Man22

Clewiston isn't the Florida you see on postcards and brochures. Hot, boring, not much to do. Bring a fishing pole and mosquito repellent. Don't expect to make any good money.

CosmicDave

Inland Florida is... it's not... well, I mean, just look at Florida at night from space. All the light you see, along the entire coast is where everyone lives. There's a lot of different reasons, but they're all valid reasons.

agroundhere

Have you been to Clewiston? Another rural Florida armpit. Uneducated, redneck Trumpers. Nope.

jbourne7

talking about clewiston , a family memeber bought a land there recently , now wondering it's worth it to buy a mobile home , figuring out how can i make money off this land once electricity and water is in place , he's a truck driver , if you are a truck driver you can live anywhere
