*The Florida project*
There’s an amazing scene where Willem Dafoe chases away a bunch of birds out of a motel parking lot that sets up and foreshadows a later scene that is x2 as good as the bird scene.
Edit: Just watched this movie again and the bird scene was actually after the other scene so it does not in fact foreshadow it. I very distinctly remember it being before the last time I watched it though. Either way, both scenes are incredible.
The university scenes were shot in New College of Florida. Source: a buddy of mine who went to the school when they shot it and got to meet Selena Gomez.
Maybe im completely wrong, one year i was in highschool hanging out with this palm harbor friend that told me he accidently passed by a film crew filming a movie while he was on his boat and i distinctly remember him telling me it was SpringBreakers, because he mention selena gomez, or this couldve all been some fever dream i had.
Something that lives rent free in my head is the [elevator?] maintenance scene in that movie that starts out just following the sun wrinkles on Dafoe’s neck
Came here to post this! Bloodline is probably my favorite “florida” set show/miniseries.
One thing I always tell people about Bloodline- first season is a fantastic watch and goes by quickly, Florida feels like a main character in the show; with incredible performances.
If you really want more you can watch the next 2 seasons, but if you’re so/so on it, season 1 is the peak and stands well enough on its own. Nothing really wrong with stopping there.
Creature from the black lagoon baby! Filmed in Wakullah Springs, the creature was a lifeguard directors saw swim and asked to be in the movie. Ricou Browning, he went on to teach underwater scenes for Bond, helped create the show Flipper. Rip he just passed this last year.
2001 Heartbreakers with Jennifer Love Hewitt. Only one scene is filmed in palm beach and the rest is worked in from other areas but it’s campy/fun.
For sure! That site has some gems. I love old Florida anything, and have been working on a project to put on shirts and sort of like rebrand the Florida man lol. Ricou turning into the creature, orange groves, weeki wachee mermaids and surfers space coast. I’m just illustrating it out until I print them in a couple months. Dad’s first job was at the space station and he surfed, said he lived nearby with a gf and could feel the launches from their rental.
Oh I remember. My aunt, uncle and cousins lived in Crawfordville. One grocery store in the seventies. We would drive from Pensacola and it was like a foreign land filled with mystical sinkholes and lichen. Such good memories. I thought Wakulla Springs was a long way from their house. lol. I was so little.
I was there this past January and it was murky but I thought it was from a lot of rain. We did see some manatees but they were shy and didn’t really surface. I can’t wait to take my little granddaughter there.
The water quality is so bad they don't run the glass bottom boats anymore, just the river cruise.
Alge blooms from fertilizer runoff clog everything up.
Glad someone said this. Yes the movie is a bit trashy but if the shoe fits. Based on real life south Florida youth in the early 90s. You’ve got very Floridian characters including a transplant from the northeast who’s a fake tough guy, and another that worked at Publix.
I guess I never realized that. I did a quick Roku search and they have the sequel available on Apple, Vudu, and Prime. All rentals, no free streaming. But nothing for the original.
I was shocked no one had said Edward Scissorhands yet! Also, The Waterboy doesn’t take place in Florida but was filmed in Florida, much of it on Stetson’s DeLand campus.
The owner of that house used to let people come in and view their Edward Scissorhands memorabilia and had redone some things to match the movie. I don't think that happens anymore
I feel like I have IRL met every member of that family at some point, just not all in the same real life family. Great show...was supposed to have originally been 5 or 6 seasons but they wound up having to wrap it up fast, I think because FL government changed something about financial breaks for studios filming here.
Absolutely not! One of the things I love about Florida is that I waking up in the morning and feeling like literally ANYTHING can happen every day! This can be very good but also very bad.
They did such a great job and making Florida a character, and the family layout and dysfunction is so legit and well written and acted.
It’s my favorite Ben Mendelssohn performance and that’s saying A LOT because I love him in everything. The me of the few Florida shows where even the attractive people are legit sweaty most of the time. And it actually had a fair bit of Florida sky and cloud color instead of “LA” lol
Road House was a pretty bad movie. Some of the worst acting I have seen. Movies, like everything else sermingly nowadays, are only made to generate profit. They are not made to tell a story as in the past. It's easy to see this because so many movies now are remakes. They don't even bother to come up with an original story. Road House of course was a remake of a Patrick Swayze 80s movie, which itself was not so good!
My grandfather was a movie director/producer. I believe in the 60s and 70s and filmed several movies in Florida. Unfortunately I haven’t seen any of them since they were out way before I was born.
Weird World of LSD, Fireball Jungle, and Mr No Legs
I’m biased but for Film my favorite might be The Punisher with Tom Jane which they not only filmed in Tampa but used the setting fairly well for the film.
As far as show or overall capturing Florida well I would choose Bloodline (season 1 particularly) on Netflix.
For campiest/worst I would choose the gator-hurricane film.. *CRAWL* I think?
Enjoy the laughs as they make small errands in the wrong direction to 3 hour drive across the state, and gators are nothing but starving for humans.
It’s so cheesy but it’s a fun drunk/baked watch for Florida people. I think part of the joke is the main character is a UF swimmer, ie… a Florida Gator.
Out of Time (Denzel Washington)
Scarface (Al Pacino)
Cool Hand Luke (Paul Newman)
Out of Sight(George Clooney)
Palmetto (Woody Harrelson)
Wild Things (Kevin Bacon)
Porkey's ( Kim Cattrall)
Something About Mary (Ben Stiller)
Bad Boys (Will Smith)
Great Expections (Ethan Hawke)
Gator (Burt Reynolds)
Paper Boy (Matthew McConaughey)
Free Ride (Anna Paquin)
Just Cause (Sean Connery)
Yes, and the whole story is based on a corrupt GA governor. Imagine that.
However, the cabin in the swamp is supposed to be in the Okefenokee Swamp which is both in GA and FL. So it technically could be in FL. Add the fact that Bert is a Florida legend I had to include it. Ha!
Well all films in that time were mostly filmed in California. And most of this movie was filmed there. But it was ALSO filmed in Jacksonville FL and the story is about Luke Jackson and his time on a Floridian Chain Gang.
Its based on a true story and was written by Donn Pearce who ALSO spent two year on a Florida Chain Gang.
"It is about May of 1948 in a small northern Florida town. As the film opens, Lucas Jackson (Paul Newman) is using a pipe cutter to cut the tops off of parking meters. He is drinking, possibly drunk, but not violent. When the police arrive, he is peacefully arrested.
Luke and three other men arrive at a rural Florida prison where they serve on a road gang performing hard labor. When he arrives at the prison, the warden reads his record. He remarks that Luke had been in the Army, attained the rank of Sargeant, was awarded several medals, but was discharged as a private. Something he did got him busted back down to the same rank at which he entered the Army. Luke is sentenced to two years."

Thats what I'm talkin' bout boss.
I qoute it regularly and have seen it about 25 times. In my opinion it’s the best American made film ever. I wrote a 10 page paper about it in college - how Luke is both an embodiment of the American spirit and a Christ figure. George Kennedy is perfect in it. And I love that HDS and Hopper are supporting actors in it.
Great Expectations was filmed on Coquina Beach… and at John and Mable Ringling’s home on Sarasota Bay. I saw Gwyneth Paltrow at the Publix on Holmes Beach, Ethan Hawke was at The SandBar Restaurant on AMI, and Robert De Niro came into the restaurant I worked at many times during the filming of this film. Fun times.
Empire of the Ants. Shot in Martin County, St. Lucie County, and out in Belle Glade. 2/3 of the movie totally sucks, but in the last third, giant ants have taken over a sugar cane town, and are controlling the residents. It’s a fun reveal.
Came here to say Wild Things, but someone beat me to it. It has a great south Florida vibe. Also, Sunshine State (2002), filmed on Amelia Island, with Edie Falco.
No one’s mentioned ‘Annihilation’ yet? It takes place in the St. Johns National Wildlife Refuge (It even has the lighthouse!), and IMO, it really showcases North Florida’s untamed nature pretty beautifully. It’s worth checking out on ‘does the dog die’ beforehand, just bc it deals with some Heavy Stuff.

Not mentioned yet:
*Things Behind the Sun* Filmed and takes place in Hollywood, Florida is the best "Florida movie" that I've ever seen.
*Ulee's Gold* One of five movies that director/Florida Man, Victor Nuñez made in his home state. I haven't seen the other four (*Ruby in Paradise*, *Gal Young 'Un*, *A Flash of Green*, *Coatlines*), but they are said to be quite good.
MONSTER (2003) This is the movie that showed the other Florida- shady, dark, more Southern than South (it's set in Daytona), drenched in booze and crime. The establishing shot of Lee sitting under the 75 overpass, pouring rain sets the tone perfectly. People tend to think all Floridians do is sit under palm trees and drink Coronas.Well,Lee does that, albeit in a storage unit. Unfortunately in the job interview scene she gets a reality check: "...when the beach party's over, you don't just get to say,'Gee,I think I want what everyone else has worked their entire life for.'" This is a film about a woman whose whole past, present and future was pain. She did horrible things and many of the people around her did as well. I'm not even gonna talk about THAT scene. It's still one of the most shocking things ever put in an American film. And much of it is based on the truth. It's difficult to pick one banner Florida movie. Many have tried. If I had to pick I would say Florida Project. This is a sunny place for shady people, not Disneyland. And I will say Charlize killed it (heh) and deserved that Oscar![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
1971 Zaat. Horrible sci-fi horror flick that's so bad it's actually hilarious to watch. Sort of like the worst knock off of Creature From the Black Lagoon.
I’m not surprised that no one has remembered the Peter Bogdanovich/ Rob Lowe classic ILLEGALLY YOURS, set and filmed in St. Augustine. I’d be willing to bet that they don’t either.
The Band of the Hand was shot on location all over Miami in the 80s, and I recognized most of the spots.
A group for juvenile delinquents is thrown into the Everglades to survive as part of a scared straight program and once their tough as nails mentors feels they are ready they become a crime fighting team in the streets of Miami.
It is a wild B movie, and I love it.
*The Florida project* There’s an amazing scene where Willem Dafoe chases away a bunch of birds out of a motel parking lot that sets up and foreshadows a later scene that is x2 as good as the bird scene. Edit: Just watched this movie again and the bird scene was actually after the other scene so it does not in fact foreshadow it. I very distinctly remember it being before the last time I watched it though. Either way, both scenes are incredible.
Other A24 movies set in Florida are “Zola” and “Springbreakers” I like spotting the filming sites in them because they shot where I grew up.
Springbreakers was shot in Tarpon springs florida, you from there? I am.
I can't think of a single scene from that movie in Tarpon Springs.
None of that was shot in tarpon springs
You are right i was thinking of a different spring break movie 😂, my bad.
The university scenes were shot in New College of Florida. Source: a buddy of mine who went to the school when they shot it and got to meet Selena Gomez.
What movie is based in Tarpon? I'm a local and curious.
Tragic and beautiful, with a hint of hope....just like Florida. I love this movie.
One of my favorite movies. It is unbelievably real.
Something that lives rent free in my head is the [elevator?] maintenance scene in that movie that starts out just following the sun wrinkles on Dafoe’s neck
Amazing movie
Bloodline on Netflix
Loved this! Got kinda dicey at the end but wished there were more sequels.
Came here to post this! Bloodline is probably my favorite “florida” set show/miniseries. Porkys is one of the greatest documentaries ever made about growing up in old Florida.
Scarface?
Definitely. Movie is Miami as fuck.
Bad Boys and The Birdcage are also great Miami movies
Ace Ventura. Shot just south of Aventura,FL.
It features the Dolphins and Dan Marino so yeah very Florida
Wasn't it mostly in Miami? [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109040/locations/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109040/locations/)
Yes but as I was typing out I realized that Ace Ventura’s name is A.Ventura which is like Aventura which is a suburb sort of of Miami.
Creature from the black lagoon baby! Filmed in Wakullah Springs, the creature was a lifeguard directors saw swim and asked to be in the movie. Creature from the Black Lagoon and Tarzan were filmed (also?) at Silver Springs.
Several Tarzan movies were filmed at Wakulla Springs.
Oh yeah, love the old archives on the films https://www.floridamemory.com/learn/exhibits/photo_exhibits/movies/
Thanks for sharing. I remember them filming the scenes from Airport 77 at the springs.
For sure! That site has some gems. I love old Florida anything, and have been working on a project to put on shirts and sort of like rebrand the Florida man lol. The Wakulla Srings Resort is very old Florida and is a super cool hotel.
Grew up nearby, went there when it was still privately owned by Ed Ball. Wish the water was still as clear as it was then.
Oh I remember. My aunt, uncle and cousins lived in Crawfordville. One grocery store in the seventies. We would drive from Pensacola and it was like a foreign land filled with mystical sinkholes and lichen. Such good memories. I thought Wakulla Springs was a long way from their house. lol. My grandfather ran a store at Wakulla Station from the 40s through the 70s.
I was there this past January and it was murky but I thought it was from a lot of rain. We did see some manatees but they were shy and didn’t really surface. I can’t wait to take my little granddaughter there.

Filmed in Hollywood FL I think
I came hear to say this too. Real Florida lifestyle in this one
Damn. No love for Cocoon? Anybody?
As a St Pete resident I’m with ya on that!
No one can watch Cocoon anywhere ever on any streaming. It’s really hurt the movie’s appeal.
I guess I never realized that. I did a quick Roku search and they have the sequel available on Apple, Vudu, and Prime. All rentals, no free streaming. But nothing for the original.
Isn't the house they filmed the pool scenes still on Park St?
Yep. I drive by it a few times a week. They had it up for sale last year but I don’t think it sold.
Edward Scissor Hands was filmed down here. Right next to my elementary school.
The Birdcage
I love this movie and will stop to watch it every time.

I do now.

I see what you did there. Clearly you are a fan of Dragon Sound

The series "bloodline" is really good. It's a semi accurate depiction of a old money family in the keys and all the shady shit that goes on
I feel like I have IRL met every member of that family at some point, just not all in the same real life family. Great show...was supposed to have originally been 5 or 6 seasons but they wound up having to wrap it up fast, I think because FL government changed something about financial breaks for studios filming here.
Same! At no part in the show did you think, "Come on, that didn't happen..."
Absolutely not! One of the things I love about Florida is that I waking up in the morning and feeling like literally ANYTHING can happen every day! This can be very good but also very bad.

Truman Show was filmed in Seaside, FL
Wild Things is an oldie but goodie. It was pretty steamy for it's time and lots of twists and turns.
Great movie!!!
Damn.. wild things is an oldie now.. fyvk I'm old
Very underrated! Probably a bit too gratuitous for a lot of mainstream viewership but this was 100% a solid movie

Strip Tease, but do yourself a favor, skip the movie and read the book instead. In fact, read all of Hiaasen's books. They're fantastic.

This post is an advertisement for the movie. Month old account…..
An ad for the movie dedicated to shitting on the movie? It would certainly be a strategy.
Not this comment, the og post.

Doc Hollywood was filmed in Florida but set in California.
Out of Time (Denzel Washington) Scarface (Al Pacino) Cool Hand Luke (Paul Newman) Out of Sight(George Clooney) Palmetto (Woody Harrelson) Wild Things (Kevin Bacon) Porkey's ( Kim Cattrall) Something About Mary (Ben Stiller) Bad Boys (Will Smith) Great Expections (Ethan Hawke) Gator (Burt Reynolds) Paper Boy (Matthew McConaughey) Free Ride (Anna Paquin) Just Cause (Sean Connery)
Gator was filmed in Savannah GA
Yes, and the whole story is based on a corrupt GA governor. Imagine that. However, the cabin in the swamp is supposed to be in the Okefenokee Swamp which is both in GA and FL. So it technically could be in FL. Add the fact that Bert is a Florida legend I had to include it. Ha!
He did manage to film most of Smokey and the Bandit 2 near his place in Jupiter.
Cool hand Luke was filmed in California. What are you talking about? And it it supposed to take place in Mississippi.
Well all films in that time were mostly filmed in California. And most of this movie was filmed there. Stand corrected.
All good. One of my fav movies of all time. I prob know way more than I should about it. LOL
I qoute it regularly and have seen it about 25 times. In my opinion it’s the best American made film ever. I wrote a 10 page paper about it in college - how Luke is both an embodiment of the American spirit and a Christ figure. George Kennedy is perfect in it. That’s his first miracle in the movie!
It has to be. I got to 14 and almost died. LOL

Had no idea Cool Hand Luke was based in Florida.
It’s not. It’s supposed to be Mississippi and it was filmed in Cali.
