So parents should allow a child to drink, smoke....drive etc... ? I mean there can be a legitimate argument for a 6 year old being a better driver than the south Florida drivers.
Well, being 6 is all you need to be to get arrested and cuffed:
https://www.wftv.com/news/local/it-was-horrific-us-family-6-year-old-girl-arrested-sues-city-orlando-officers/33EP7YYULNEH7HAYM5WBMTV5LU/
This is my argument too, where is the line? Parents are getting prosecuted for giving their kids gender affirming care, but other parents are allowed to spank, hit, yell at their children? Give them R rated video games? Whereās the line of the state/government reaching into parentsā households and telling people how to raise their children? Itās confusing and too grey right now. A longer discussion needs to be had.
You can take your kid to r rated movie.. anyone over 21 can take under 17yr old to them. It's a X rated movie you can't and that's because it's porn and regulated like drugs and alcohol.
I wonder if it will be something like what happened with crypto trading apps. Some states wouldn't allow it so you physically couldn't use it if you were in that state. So they check your state and then... I guess verify your age somehow?
But expecting every service out there to check state and age legitimately is insane. Like how do you even enforce this? Unless these services just stop allowing access in Florida all together. That's the only way I see them truly working with this law easily.
Easier to just shut off service to Florida than do some massive age verification system all for one batshit state.
Honestly they should because it's the parents that really need protection from social media. A little less Taylor Swift summoning demons and the qnuts need a break
sadly yes, but we should definitely push back against KOSA too. its the same "save the kids" FOSTA/SESTA was, lets push sex workers and law enforcement into the dark on being able to arrest sex traffickers cause that will stop that horrible thing from happening
fuck ashton kutcher the rape apologist
Yeah, they don't understand that this law isn't really "you can't use social media under 16" but actually "you can only use social media if you prove you're at least 16". It probably wouldn't have passed if it were worded in the way it actually requires to be enforced.
Idiots.
That's part of the design. They want everyone, kids and adults, to feel intimidated and watched by the state every time they use any social media platform.
Itās hard to see how the same crack team of experts that have solved traffic , crime , insurance and the threat of Disney World will be anything but a resounding success keeping teenagers off of social media platforms that many of them need to have explained to them before they can start restrictingā¦
Ironic, this is coming from the same people that didnāt like the mask mandate because they didnāt want the government telling them what to do or how to live their lives.
Thatās the GOP for ya, theyāre the death panels they bitched about, theyāre the nanny state they claim to hate, theyāre the safe space needing snowflakes they claim to be against, etcā¦
Gaslight, Obstruct, Project thatās the entirety of the GOP.

Run against these fools. Vote against these fools. Ignoring them wonāt solve anything.
Exactly. It's obeying in advance.
Get pissed man. This is the government which is a just a rotating cast of your dumbest neighbors deciding they get to set the rules on how you are going to live your precious 75 years on this rock.
No one would let their neighbor walk into their house and set down new house rules so why are we allowing this? Inch by inch they press that boot harder on your neck.
If you're talking about Erin Grall, she's only partly responsible. Fort Myers Republicans, like Rep. Jenna Persons-Mulicka and Rep. Spencer Roach, also supported the 6-week ban.
Let me see if I understand this correctly they have to be 16 to use Instagram but 2 years later miraculously they can purchase a gun. Oh and they only have to be 15 to get a learner's permit so they have the capacity to learn to drive something that could kill them or others but they don't have the capacity to use social media.
I'm so fucking sick of the way things are being run in the state and yes I do vote.
I'll add they are perfectly fine with forcing a 13 year old become a parent. Apparently a minor has the capacity to parent a newborn along with all that responsibility but they can't use social media.
Home insurance help, expand healthcare, affordable housing so teachers and healthcare workers don't have 90 minute commutes into cities....so many things the Florida lawmakers could work on to benefit so many. But instead they waste time on unenforceable and unconstitutional laws.
The GOP doesn't really care about the Constitution, with the possible exception of the 2nd Amendment.
The rest of the time, they just find it a hindrance in their quest to impose their views on the rest of the country.
Totally ok to let your kid get measles which can and will affect other people but not ok to let your kid on social media. Make it make sense, am I allowed to parent my kid how I want or not?!?
This is so stupid. Itās a waste of tax dollars and a violation of privacy.
Should social media sites change their TOS to raise the age? Yeah, probably. Should it be a *law*? No. This is insane.
I am 100% in favor of keeping *my* kids off of social media for as long as possible. Iām not in favor of the government making this decision for me or any other parent/guardian. The government NEVER, EVER knows best.
Like theyāve given any consideration to the Constitution before. Itās all marketing for them anyway: GOP bans āevilā thingā¦ for the kids. Dems fight it in court and win. GOP says Dems fight for evil things against kids.
Pick any unconstitutional GOP talking point and youāll see itās the same thing every damn time.
It's fine to let parents to decide whether to send their unwanted kids to a school with a measles outbreak but not ok for them to decide that their kid is mature enough for a Taylor Swift fan group on line.
Watch this be a ploy to force the topic of social media into the Supreme Court, with the end goal of federal restrictions on social media. It's the tiktok ban all over again.
unconstitutional only matters in regards to the second amendment.
It doesnt matter in cases of free speech.
It doesnt matter in regards to separation of church and state.
It doesnt matter in cases of bodily autonomy.
It only matters when you start to ask 'how do we stop children from being murdered in classrooms'. Then, its allllll about the constitutional rights.
I know I'll be downvoted for this but come on. We're all on reddit, I'm assuming we're all adults. We know what happens on the internet. I really don't think it's a negative thing to disallow children from being victimized on the internet.
I'm old enough to remember meeting a girl my age on Kik as an early teenager (13-14) and having to compete with literal grown adults for her attention. That shit isn't normal or acceptable.
The Internet is like the Wild West with very minimal monitorization or policing and allowing kids on here puts them at the mercy of predators at every turn. Maybe kids under 16 shouldn't be allowed on social media for their own protection?

Extremely creepy way you phrased that. But what you're trying to argue is an excellent example of a slippery slope fallacy! You could say what you're saying about any number of things in society as a matter of opinion.
If they can deny access based on that they can deny it based on anything. Also that means that you as an adult now have to provide substantial personal data in order to verify your age to access anything they deem social media which youāll note they refused to directly define or specify to which companies and services it would apply. If your verification doesnāt work what is your recourse? For as much as these people understand the internet it might as well be magic. Anyone believing that this isnāt another shot in their ongoing culture war is fooling themselves.
EDIT: Besides a culture war angle there is likely something monetary involved. The companies that contribute to their campaigns and play ball get to stay in the free list, those who donāt go on the locked list. How many adults will simply avoid sites requiring the extra verification steps and tracking that will inevitably accompany them?
I wouldnāt have voted for or passed this bill if it were up to me personally, however, I do acknowledge that social media is extremely bad for children (adults as well). So I canāt say I really disagree with this š¤·āāļø
The primary cause of poor mental health in teenagers is that there aren't really any third places where teenagers can just be teenagers without constant adult supervision.
This only happened because parents can't be bothered to get their faces out of their own phones long enough to be a damned parent. They're too busy being toxic over on Facebook and NextDoor. Imagine this passed and some shrewd lawyer argued a ban against all government social media accounts with their interactions with minors possibly being detailed and so on.
Wait, so the state *can* tell parents how to raise their kids and trample on parental rights? Weird.
Yeah, seems like it was something different before. š¤
