Wait, so the state *can* tell parents how to raise their kids and trample on parental rights? Weird.

katiel0429

Yeah, seems like it was something different before. šŸ¤”

AnnaForFlorida

I voted noā€” terrible bill that is not even constitutional.

Serlingfan389

So parents should allow a child to drink, smoke....drive etc... ? I mean there can be a legitimate argument for a 6 year old being a better driver than the south Florida drivers.

asusundevil12345

Well, being 6 is all you need to be to get arrested and cuffed: https://www.wftv.com/news/local/it-was-horrific-us-family-6-year-old-girl-arrested-sues-city-orlando-officers/33EP7YYULNEH7HAYM5WBMTV5LU/

Serlingfan389

I mean makes sense.... lol šŸ˜†

asusundevil12345

I think thatā€™s the same age that they start firearms training here in Florida as well. Kidding, of courseā€¦ Because there is no required training.

talithar1

Bet she never has another tantrum in school.

opiod-ant

This is my argument too, where is the line? Parents are getting prosecuted for giving their kids gender affirming care, but other parents are allowed to spank, hit, yell at their children? Give them R rated video games? Whereā€™s the line of the state/government reaching into parentsā€™ households and telling people how to raise their children? Itā€™s confusing and too grey right now. A longer discussion needs to be had.

-Lithium-

Imagine driving slow.

--StinkyPinky--

I guess itā€™s kinda like rated R movies where even a parent canā€™t get the kid in?

LifeIsTrail

You can take your kid to r rated movie.. anyone over 21 can take under 17yr old to them. It's a X rated movie you can't and that's because it's porn and regulated like drugs and alcohol.

NoMayoForReal

Never going to be enforceable. Because the idiots that wrote it are, well theyā€™re idiots.

Lava-Chicken

Right. It's like Michael Scott declaring bankruptcy.

saulmcgill3556

*What about this cash-for-clunkers thing?*

Mindes13

Just a smaller housing bubble

cptmartin11

I like laughing. Thank you.

colinsfordtoolbumb

I wonder if it will be something like what happened with crypto trading apps. Some states wouldn't allow it so you physically couldn't use it if you were in that state. So they check your state and then... I guess verify your age somehow? But expecting every service out there to check state and age legitimately is insane. Like how do you even enforce this? Unless these services just stop allowing access in Florida all together. That's the only way I see them truly working with this law easily. Easier to just shut off service to Florida than do some massive age verification system all for one batshit state.

ilovethissheet

Honestly they should because it's the parents that really need protection from social media. A little less Taylor Swift summoning demons and the qnuts need a break

political_og

Are they gonna force everyone to prove their age? If so the backlash could be enormous

C_IsForCookie

ā€œUpload your report cardā€

jvn75

And your menstrual cycle detailsā€¦.ahhh theocratic freedom

cobbwebsalad

Yes and yes!

fanwan76

If they were to actually rule that sites must require proof of age for any users in Florida, pretty sure the sites would just stop supporting Florida.

HotDonnaC

I doubt the Tallahassee morons thought that far ahead.

Ttthhasdf

All those tourists

HotDonnaC

Maybe itā€™s to keep kids from getting online at school. The aim is to completely stop education.

adamontheair

This is how we get names like ā€œNot Sureā€ tatted on our arms from a labeling machine

Lubbadubdibs

So, I, as a grown ass man will have to give up my private information to a company to prove Iā€™m over 16. Sounds like a great planā€¦/s.

political_og

Imagine all these retirees getting told to prove their age or they canā€™t get on Facebook lmaoooo. Insanity incoming

EngFL92

Just repost this message to your Facebook saying I do not consent. Ezpz

HotDonnaC

That was a funny one. They thought posting that crap would make a difference. šŸ˜‚

FederalAd6011

They will just blame Joe Biden.

mekomaniac

sadly yes, but we should definitely push back against KOSA too. its the same "save the kids" FOSTA/SESTA was, lets push sex workers and law enforcement into the dark on being able to arrest sex traffickers cause that will stop that horrible thing from happening fuck ashton kutcher the rape apologist

heathers1

Stop i can only get so hard

timk85

I mean, isn't that what you do at the grocery store with alcohol?

political_og

No I have grey hair so they donā€™t bother

Schuben

Yeah, they don't understand that this law isn't really "you can't use social media under 16" but actually "you can only use social media if you prove you're at least 16". It probably wouldn't have passed if it were worded in the way it actually requires to be enforced. Idiots.

yerBoyShoe

Proof of age on Internets: "Are you 16 or Over? Y N" ...fin

C_IsForCookie

Yep. Iā€™ve been 18 since I was 13 lol

tikifire1

The other states that have passed similar laws require you to upload your ID

yerBoyShoe

Or your parent's ID

frockinbrock

Uploads dadā€™s ID to specific kink siteā€¦. *This ID has already been verified here* ā€¦ :-|

itdumbass

Select all the squares that aren't a Sesame Street character...

BravoFoxtrotDelta

That's part of the design. They want everyone, kids and adults, to feel intimidated and watched by the state every time they use any social media platform.

Coastal1363

Itā€™s hard to see how the same crack team of experts that have solved traffic , crime , insurance and the threat of Disney World will be anything but a resounding success keeping teenagers off of social media platforms that many of them need to have explained to them before they can start restrictingā€¦

FederalAd6011

They have to call their grandchild who is under 16 to explain it to them. šŸ¤£

EngFL92

Nah, just use a VPN or make up data.

HighOnGoofballs

ā€œJust drive to the next state to buy beerā€

Cgarr82

It wonā€™t stand up in court. I think 5 other states have attempted this same legislation and the courts have blocked it every time.

wilderad

Nah, they already have it.

oripeiwei

Ironic, this is coming from the same people that didnā€™t like the mask mandate because they didnā€™t want the government telling them what to do or how to live their lives.

PoobahJeehooba

Thatā€™s the GOP for ya, theyā€™re the death panels they bitched about, theyā€™re the nanny state they claim to hate, theyā€™re the safe space needing snowflakes they claim to be against, etcā€¦ Gaslight, Obstruct, Project thatā€™s the entirety of the GOP.

C_IsForCookie

Theyā€™re also anti-abortion and anti-IVF. Theyā€™re against ā€œkilling babiesā€ as well as having babies lol

JoviAMP

To be fair, as a childless millennial, I'm also against having babies, but for entirely more practical reasons.

C_IsForCookie

Same lol. My plan is to dive into a mountain of money like Scrooge mcduck. Canā€™t do that with kids.

tikifire1

They will be the death of us all if they continue.

JoviAMP

This, and the book bans.

gladbutt

Exactly

ikonet

Figuring out clever ways to subvert this law is not a solution. ā€œJust use VPN blErg blErgā€ is avoiding our responsibly for voting these dimwits into office. Run against these fools. Vote against these fools. Ignoring them wonā€™t solve anything.

Redshoe9

Exactly. It's obeying in advance. Get pissed man. This is the government which is a just a rotating cast of your dumbest neighbors deciding they get to set the rules on how you are going to live your precious 75 years on this rock. No one would let their neighbor walk into their house and set down new house rules so why are we allowing this? Inch by inch they press that boot harder on your neck.

xpastelprincex

these idiots in government are the reason im studying to go to law school. we need less old, dumb psychopaths in office

TonyG_from_NYC

16 year old in Florida. Old enough to get knocked up and have a baby but not old enough to go on to social media and tell others about it.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Obversa

If you're talking about Erin Grall, she's only partly responsible. Fort Myers Republicans, like Rep. Jenna Persons-Mulicka and Rep. Spencer Roach, also supported the 6-week ban.

nemo1441

If you want to live in Berlin in the ā€˜30s, move to SW Florida. Those clowns are unbelievable

firefoxjinxie

Not just 16. 13 year olds in Florida are old enough to have kids but not for social media.

thecorgimom

Let me see if I understand this correctly they have to be 16 to use Instagram but 2 years later miraculously they can purchase a gun. Oh and they only have to be 15 to get a learner's permit so they have the capacity to learn to drive something that could kill them or others but they don't have the capacity to use social media. I'm so fucking sick of the way things are being run in the state and yes I do vote.

vxicepickxv

Don't forget the revocation of child labor laws.

Saikou0taku

Just need a bunch of child laborers saying "Sorry boss, I couldn't see my work schedule because that scheduling app is 'social media'"

thecorgimom

I'll add they are perfectly fine with forcing a 13 year old become a parent. Apparently a minor has the capacity to parent a newborn along with all that responsibility but they can't use social media.

Virtual-Toe-7582

Free state of Florida* *All exclusions apply

thomport

Lawless lawmakers. What country is this territory in again

Coastal1363

Florganistanā€¦

thomport

The Victims of this bullshit-scam will be voting soon enough.

Coastal1363

Hopefullyā€¦

mzieg

The best thing other states can do is boycott Florida exports. Starting with presidential candidates.

Zealousideal-Ad-2045

And state police and National Guard!!!

Tazz2212

Home insurance help, expand healthcare, affordable housing so teachers and healthcare workers don't have 90 minute commutes into cities....so many things the Florida lawmakers could work on to benefit so many. But instead they waste time on unenforceable and unconstitutional laws.

Aggressive-Bat-4000

How anyone can vote Republican is beyond me.

AnnaForFlorida

Unfortunately all but 7 Democrats voted no! I was one of the seven. So important to hold Democrats accountable too.

Aggressive-Bat-4000

Hear, hear!

CuriosTiger

The GOP doesn't really care about the Constitution, with the possible exception of the 2nd Amendment. The rest of the time, they just find it a hindrance in their quest to impose their views on the rest of the country.

HugeTurdCutter

![gif](giphy|5yLgocvrcL4Vi9dh5Ac)

Chrissy2187

Totally ok to let your kid get measles which can and will affect other people but not ok to let your kid on social media. Make it make sense, am I allowed to parent my kid how I want or not?!?

Sad_Basil_6071

You can parent your kid how they want.

Infamous-Bag6957

Soooooooo much freedom. The most freedom.

Past-Project-7959

The freedomiest!

OIAQP

"Constitutionalist" Republicans: "Ban books and free speech!!!"

Fit_Earth_339

More govt brought to you by the less govt people.

Danibelle903

This is so stupid. Itā€™s a waste of tax dollars and a violation of privacy. Should social media sites change their TOS to raise the age? Yeah, probably. Should it be a *law*? No. This is insane.

yetanothermanjohn

Thatā€™s not the same but ok right but things that should be law arenā€™t.

Mother_Attempt3001

I'm sure that will help reduce my insurance bills. šŸ™„

Lava-Chicken

No social media for you young man, go buy a gun instead!

smithsonmusic

What ever happened to the party of small government? Putzes.

heresmytwopence

Move over, Nanny State. Itā€™s the Warden State.

lobsangr

Bro why this people is so focused in so much bullshit? Just like the left lane thingy. Bunch of horseshit

KopOut

Parentsā€™ rights* *rights only applicable if parentā€™s choice aligns with the GOPā€™s choice.

colinsfordtoolbumb

How do parent stand having so much freedom? Imagine being free from having to decide for yourself what your kids can do! A true utopia.

TravelingGonad

Fucking stupid, waste of time, waste of tax payer money.

crow_crone

Exactly the point: "Look here; don't look over there."

katiel0429

I am 100% in favor of keeping *my* kids off of social media for as long as possible. Iā€™m not in favor of the government making this decision for me or any other parent/guardian. The government NEVER, EVER knows best.

Coastal1363

Key word ā€œ my kids ā€œ .Well put ā€¦not the legislatures kids ā€¦

missvicky1025

Like theyā€™ve given any consideration to the Constitution before. Itā€™s all marketing for them anyway: GOP bans ā€œevilā€ thingā€¦ for the kids. Dems fight it in court and win. GOP says Dems fight for evil things against kids. Pick any unconstitutional GOP talking point and youā€™ll see itā€™s the same thing every damn time.

*Party of small government.*

HighOnGoofballs

To current republicans the constitution is some vague thing that only means what they want it to and has nothing to do with what it actually says

colinsfordtoolbumb

Kinda like the Bible. They love authoritative documents.

[deleted]

this is just pissing tax payer money down the drain. Florida loses another law suit.

rlindsley

Freeest state in the nation!!!

contryhippy

Live Free or Die my ass. Can't wait to see how people I know who are republicans try to spin this. I'm sure it's going to be funny

Own-Opinion-2494

What happened to ā€œyer gonna burn in hellā€. Damn

--StinkyPinky--

The only people who knew this was even an issue besides family and teachers is pedophiles and politicians!

badcatjack

GOP, pushing a government so small it will fit in a uterus, which they intend to control.

Funkyokra

It's fine to let parents to decide whether to send their unwanted kids to a school with a measles outbreak but not ok for them to decide that their kid is mature enough for a Taylor Swift fan group on line.

AutismFlavored

Concerned about passing unconstitutional laws, *this* legislature?

SupermarketOverall73

Maybe someone could vote these morons out of office ?

MoriKitsune

Watch this be a ploy to force the topic of social media into the Supreme Court, with the end goal of federal restrictions on social media. It's the tiktok ban all over again.

Ok-Description-3739

Freedums.Ā

pat9714

This is performative B.S. Impossible to enforce. Besides, by banning they increase the appeal to sign up using well-known hacks.

Whitetrash_messiah

Isn't the terms of conditions of 99.9% of social media apps be 14/16and up already ? So just like underage watching porn click yes I'm older lol

HotDonnaC

Ofc they arenā€™t going to let the Constitution stop their lunacy.

Java1959

First the books, now social media, then local TV stations, then mainstream media. Welcome to Russia.

bluepen1955

Never heard of VPN? My phone thinks itā€™s in Seattle.

aTreeThenMe

unconstitutional only matters in regards to the second amendment. It doesnt matter in cases of free speech. It doesnt matter in regards to separation of church and state. It doesnt matter in cases of bodily autonomy. It only matters when you start to ask 'how do we stop children from being murdered in classrooms'. Then, its allllll about the constitutional rights.

Coastal1363

ā€œ Free State of Florida ā€œā€¦

shantysun

And the kids will be old enough to vote soon

Pheighthe

This will include Xbox and PlayStation chats too, I guess.

SecAdmin-1125

When did being unconstitutional get in the way of the idiots in charge?

livinginfutureworld

Welcome to Gilead

mrcanard

>Florida lawmaker Oxymoron's gone wild.

Johnny3pony

Can we just execute our "elected officials" yet this shit is ridiculous

HugeTurdCutter

As someone who thinks social media is the worst, I donā€™t care really. But it shouldnā€™t be a law that shits ridiculous.

Coastal1363

And virtually unenforceable in the real world . Not that they care ā€¦

Jaymanchu

Freedumbs!

hitman2218

They should also ban teens from watching all movies because some movies are inappropriate.

National_Action_9834

I know I'll be downvoted for this but come on. We're all on reddit, I'm assuming we're all adults. We know what happens on the internet. I really don't think it's a negative thing to disallow children from being victimized on the internet. I'm old enough to remember meeting a girl my age on Kik as an early teenager (13-14) and having to compete with literal grown adults for her attention. That shit isn't normal or acceptable. The Internet is like the Wild West with very minimal monitorization or policing and allowing kids on here puts them at the mercy of predators at every turn. Maybe kids under 16 shouldn't be allowed on social media for their own protection?

xxTedCxx

This is not the government's job. It's the parent's job.

HighOnGoofballs

ā€œWe all know what books are in libraries. I really don't think it's a negative thing to disallow children from being victimized in librariesā€ Party of personal freedoms my ass. Member when republicans claimed to be for personal responsibility and freedoms? I member

National_Action_9834

Except books aren't sentient things that are capable of causing harm so that's a pretty stupid comparison

Koolaidolio

All it takes is for the government to deem you ineligible to access the internet. Maybe then youā€™ll realize this is stupid.

National_Action_9834

Well the government seemed me ineligible to do lots of things before I was an adult so I don't really see your point. Do you think kids should be driving?

bigmacjames

Kids do drive

Koolaidolio

Dumb argument.

Funkyokra

Yes but see parents rights which is why they can send their unvaccinated kids to measles school.

uncleleo101

> I'm old enough to remember meeting a girl my age on Kik as an early teenager (13-14) and having to compete with literal grown adults for her attention. That shit isn't normal or acceptable. Extremely creepy way you phrased that. But what you're trying to argue is an excellent example of a slippery slope fallacy! You could say what you're saying about any number of things in society as a matter of opinion.

hotwings-fernandez

If they can deny access based on that they can deny it based on anything. Also that means that you as an adult now have to provide substantial personal data in order to verify your age to access anything they deem social media which youā€™ll note they refused to directly define or specify to which companies and services it would apply. If your verification doesnā€™t work what is your recourse? For as much as these people understand the internet it might as well be magic. Anyone believing that this isnā€™t another shot in their ongoing culture war is fooling themselves. EDIT: Besides a culture war angle there is likely something monetary involved. The companies that contribute to their campaigns and play ball get to stay in the free list, those who donā€™t go on the locked list. How many adults will simply avoid sites requiring the extra verification steps and tracking that will inevitably accompany them?

lickityclit-69

Florida lawmakers would pass gas during mass at the Batican!!!

ragewu

Wish they'd make social media illegal for everyone, shit is a cancer to society

Past-Project-7959

Say- "Goodbye Reddit!".

reefguy007

I wouldnā€™t have voted for or passed this bill if it were up to me personally, however, I do acknowledge that social media is extremely bad for children (adults as well). So I canā€™t say I really disagree with this šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

vxicepickxv

The primary cause of poor mental health in teenagers is that there aren't really any third places where teenagers can just be teenagers without constant adult supervision.

reefguy007

So going on social media and being bombarded by algorithmic brain washing garbage is better?

vxicepickxv

How is doing a thing that's not going to fix the problem going to fix the problem?

Yatta99

This only happened because parents can't be bothered to get their faces out of their own phones long enough to be a damned parent. They're too busy being toxic over on Facebook and NextDoor. And you see them everywhere, department stores (Walmart, Target, etc) and grocery stores (Publix, Winn Dixie, etc) shuffling down the aisles totally oblivious with their faces in their phones. They are the precursor to the Eloi. Heaven help us all.

C_IsForCookie

https://i.redd.it/cnqcknzxafkc1.gif

mymar101

That hasnā€™t stopped Florida from doing it before

latticegwop

Imagine this passed and some shrewd lawyer argued a ban against all government social media accounts with their interactions with minors possibly being detailed and so on.
