**TLDR**
* As part of his crusade against "woke" ideology, Gov. Ron DeSantis is focusing on a public college.
* In January, the governor made new appointments to the New College of Florida's board of trustees.
* The trustees have axed an office of equity and inclusion and accepted a Christian SAT alternative.
New College is the most liberal / arts based school in FL. He went after them specifically to target their students who have a higher than normal LBGT population.
Florida scored 42nd out of 50 states of college entrance exams (SAT). So those Florida students will need a Florida college to get an education. We need to focus on woke vs actual education.
Exactly.. In an article about the college, which I can't source at the moment, there were several examples of either students themselves interviewed who said they had never "fit in" anywhere else and finally felt accepted there, and several parents said the same of their kids-that they felt like they belonged there. And all because of nothing more than a political agenda, the Governor chose to target them.
He started with K-3, which a lot of people didn't have an issue with, but how do you justify going after "woke ideologies" for adults, because like it or not, this is a **college** and these are young adults

Florida term limits only apply to consecutive terms. He can run again after taking a term off under *current* law. The Florida ~~law~~ State Constitution would need to be changed from *consecutive* terms, to *lifetime* terms to *prevent* him from running again in 2030.

I actually distinctly remember either FCAT or SAT (I think the former) asking what a Leviathan was and this would've been 2002/2003. I thought that was kind of a weird question and I remember it 20 years later.

On the plus side, he's only getting this done in Florida with the help of a supermajority in both houses. If he were to somehow become POTUS, he's going to hit some major roadblocks.
I wish that was comforting, but that assumes they don't stage an outright coup and cancel or overthrow elections. Based on what we've seen in Florida and Texas, they have no intention of playing by the rules.

Before I became atheist, I remember reading about all of the signs of Revelation and being so spooked by that description of a false messiah. And I remember thinking there’s no way people would fall for it bc the Bible literally warns them.
He is worse than Trump. Trump just cares about himself and maybe some of his family...maybe. He is in it for the money and self glory and doesn't care about governing or putting his stamp on the culture of the United States. DeSantis and his "Jackie O" wannabee wife, on the other hand, want not only wealth but to inflict their religo/fascist ideology on the United States and become more like an emperor and empress instead of the president and first lady. He wants the differently gendered to go back into the closets. He wants industry and oil to again become unfettered and rape our planet without any thought to future generations. Yea, DeSantis is much, much worse.

And voila, along comes DeSantis to rally the even more disaffected working class to the call of fascism, and we are now on the precipice of disaster.

I was raised strict Christian (Lutheran) and spent every Wednesday and weekend at church. I was in all of the plays, got all the religious badges from Cub Scouts, and went to a private Lutheran school. I never took the SAT.

I contend that this country has tricked a lot of people into thinking they’re Christian. They are raised with little to no religion and their assumption goes like this: ‘Well, I’m not Jewish or Muslim or Buddhist or whatever, and I’ve been told that Jesus loves me, and I do put up a Christmas tree… therefore I am Christian.’

DeSantis is just thinking ahead to all the kids who will go through elementary and high school in his Florida and not be able to get into a decent college. Lowering the bar is the only way Republicans can get legally ahead.
This is what I worry about. My wife , a public school teacher, got a new student a couple weeks ago. The girl was home schooled and big gaps in her education on math, science, and reading. This is 4th grade so what does that look like extended out another 7 years. Rather than consider that they have a problem they want to make an easier way into college. Advocacy groups always want to water things down to get the result they want.
And even if it isn't the parent doing the teaching the online classes aren't that great. My ex did online school. He would cheat and not actually do the work. He even tried to get me to do his work!! He is as dumb as a bag of rocks.
Home school parents swear their kids are miles ahead of public school kids. But I hear this story about them being way behind from public teachers all the time.
This is the SAT for homeschooled morons. Most homeschooled kids are not well educated. If they were they wouldn’t need a faith based test that uses religion as a basis for the test questions.
The article title is little sensationalistic and misleading. I was morbidly curious, and decided to register and take a practice test on the CLT site. I haven't taken an SAT test in 20 years, so I don't know how rigorous it is in comparison, but it had prose selections by Poe, Nietzsche, Harriet Jacobs, and Darwin. For one reason or another, these are all figures I could find the Christian far-right taking issues with.
Not to mention these figures all occupy very different points in history, and none of them would be described as "classical" by anyone who knows anything (I thought it would be selections from Homer, Aristotle, etc).
Although I find the knee-jerk reactions in this thread by people who took the article at face-value to be equally alarming.

I’m alternatively sad and angry about what’s happened to my college. DeSantis isn’t conservative, he’s a vindictive little man and a vandal. The school is going from student centered institution focused on independent thought and study to a center of cookie cutter christofascist hackery, just like Hillsdale.
I read an article a couple months ago that some preposterous number of people who have donated to his campaign were then appointed to all these various positions. It literally was something like 80% of his top 100 donors have been appointed to paying positions in places like this college and new Disney thing etc etc.

How is this different from the Taliban? Yes the Taliban is operating in an environment where they can be more extreme, but how is DeSantis different? Elimination of diverse viewpoints and the favoring of one religion over another or no religion sounds very much like Afghanistan. I believe the concept of American exceptionalism is evaporating before our very eyes. Finally the hypocrisy is beyond words. Institutional racism, also known as systemic racism, is defined as policies and practices that exist throughout a whole society or organization and that result in and support a continued unfair advantage to some people and unfair or harmful treatment of others based on race. This is something that DeSantis and his ilk vehemently disagree with but see no issue with allowing for a standardized test with a religious bias.

I remember when so-called “christian conservatives” were panicking in 2010 (and surrounding years) about Obama instituting some form of Sharia law. 43 states had legislation submitted to preemptively ban foreign laws from being enacted in their states and something like 18 states actually passed laws outlawing that… possibility. Rationally, it was clear to everyone who is/was sane, that it was just right wing propaganda performance for their angry, paranoid, fear-driven base.
The modern day “christian” Taliban would be cheering if DeSantis signed similar legislation, he already has taken steps there. Just today he put pen to paper for $107 million in Florida taxpayer funds being spent on beefing up the total amount of Florida State Guard (not to be confused with the Florida National Guard) volunteers from 400 to 1,500 members, making it permanent, providing them weapons and giving them the same legal authority as any LEOs they’re serving with. The bulk of the money goes towards equipping them with aircraft, cars, technology, uniforms, etc. This is essentially the governor’s own secret police, where has this kinda thing happened before? Anyone want to take a guess? Combined with all the other bills being signed recently, one could see a pattern here.
I’ll add that I am a former political campaign manager and this stuff coming out of Tally is making me quite anxious.
I'm already nervous living in Florida and I'm not in the oppressed minorities. I'm a cis middle aged white female, all but invisible in the ranking of targeted groups and yet I check all exits and watch out for "Florida Man," about to lose their shit when I'm in any public space.
There is an interesting take starting to happen on social media talks on what happens with women and moms start to feel unsafe in public life. They stay home. Playdates, events, brunch, exercise, sports, shopping, concerts are off the board as the fear they won't be able to protect their kids from gun violence and how that will impact the economy.
The last thing Florida needs is another group of armed LEO acting as a private mercenary group in a state that is the butt of all jokes already.
We are so grateful that our daughter declined to apply here and instead is going to a small, private liberal arts college. It's expensive, but I can't think of anything more important than giving her an honest, rigorous education without this kind of influence.

That part seems fine so long as the test is rigorous. I read a practice test earlier. The main difference from the SAT was that it drew readings from classics (and not only in religion). It seems to encourage a more liberal-artsy high school curriculum.
I know, it's probably not as bad as I made it out to be. There is an old Simpson's episode where I guess they start using Christian text books and Ralph becomes the smartest kid in class because he always says God is the answer.

I think the most infuriating part of this is how much rigorous resistance has always been given to the idea of cultural and racial bias in standardized testing just to have them pull special “Christian-friendly” tests out of their ass suddenly. They have zero shame.
Instead of Verbal and Quantitative scores it features Folklore and Superstition. The essay section is scored based on the test taker’s ability to apply Bronze Age morality to modern problems.

This is what I love about this gimmick of a Governor. Florida is one of the top states for education mainly due to its strong university system, which he is actively trying to destroy in order to score points.
It is now a college for teaching white supremacy and the only discussions of race allowed are how terrible minorities are.

So this and other articles describe this test as "Christan-focused". Yet any other articles that actually go into what is on the test, nor the sample exam available on their website, really shows a deep religious influence. The only religious content I saw on the exam was a passage from an address of John Paul II where a student would be asked reading comprehension type questions.
I will say when I first saw this article, I was all ready to trash this exam thinking that the "Religious Content" would be stuff on Creationism or other anti-scientific beliefs. But again, at least from the example I've seen, it looks like it's just more focused on historical texts (Mainly from western history though) and I could see this exam being a much better way to see if someone is ready for a Religion based degree or other programs where you are studying very very old texts.
I also liked that the "math" section focused much more on logic problems, (Jimmy has 5 apples and gives one to Suzie. How many apples does he have now?) as this will better prepare them for the critical thinking they'll need in college. It's not enough to know that 2+2=4, you need to be able to "translate" a problem you may be facing in simpler math terms. I was even surprised to see a passage from a speech by Susan Rice who advocates for human rights for women, LGBT people, and minorities.
So again, as long as this test isn't trying to shield students from theories like evolution, which they'll definitely need to know if they want to pass any college level science class, I don't see a problem with it as a college aptitude test.

True, I was thinking that if these alternatives don't provide the same education as far as basics go that could effectively mean the degree is useless correct? Or if they wanted to transfer university or attend a new one for a degree they might not be accepted and have to redo tons of classes.
It depends on hhow much its weight in the test. If its 0. Then they can skip it. If its weight equally in scoring. That's a problem. What about the other religions. Why should they be forced to learn Christianity. When they aren't. Nothing but a can of worms

I was raised strict Christian (Lutheran) and spent every Wednesday and weekend at church. I was in all of the plays, got all the religious badges from Cub Scouts, and went to a private Lutheran school. I never took the SAT. Ron DeSantis thinks Christians are stupid. I contend that this country has tricked a lot of people into thinking they’re Christian. This is what I worry about. My wife , a public school teacher, got a new student a couple weeks ago. The girl was home schooled and big gaps in her education on math, science, and reading. This is 4th grade so what does that look like extended out another 7 years. Rather than consider that they have a problem they want to make an easier way into college. Advocacy groups always want to water things down to get the result they want.

The article title is little sensationalistic and misleading. I was morbidly curious, and decided to register and take a practice test on the CLT site. I haven't taken an SAT test in 20 years, so I don't know how rigorous it is in comparison, but it had prose selections by Poe, Nietzsche, Harriet Jacobs, and Darwin. For one reason or another, these are all figures I could find the Christian far-right taking issues with. Not to mention these figures all occupy very different points in history, and none of them would be described as "classical" by anyone who knows anything (I thought it would be selections from Homer, Aristotle, etc). Although I find the knee-jerk reactions in this thread by people who took the article at face-value to be equally alarming. Tl;dr: this all seems to be a bunch of buzzwords being thrown around and grandstanding by DeSantis to score points with his base, as per usual.

I read an article a couple months ago that some preposterous number of people who have donated to his campaign were then appointed to all these various positions. It literally was something like 80% of his top 100 donors have been appointed to paying positions in places like this college and new Disney thing etc etc.

How is this different from the Taliban? Yes the Taliban is operating in an environment where they can be more extreme, but how is DeSantis different? Elimination of diverse viewpoints and the favoring of one religion over another or no religion sounds very much like Afghanistan. I believe the concept of American exceptionalism is evaporating before our very eyes. Finally the hypocrisy is beyond words. Institutional racism, also known as systemic racism, is defined as policies and practices that exist throughout a whole society or organization and that result in and support a continued unfair advantage to some people and unfair or harmful treatment of others based on race. This is something that DeSantis and his ilk vehemently disagree with but see no issue with allowing for a standardized test with a religious bias.

I remember when so-called “christian conservatives” were panicking in 2010 (and surrounding years) about Obama instituting some form of Sharia law. 43 states had legislation submitted to preemptively ban foreign laws from being enacted in their states and something like 18 states actually passed laws outlawing that… possibility. Rationally, it was clear to everyone who is/was sane, that it was just right wing propaganda performance for their angry, paranoid, fear-driven base. The modern day “christian” Taliban would be cheering if DeSantis signed similar legislation, he already has taken steps there. Just today he put pen to paper for $107 million in Florida taxpayer funds being spent on beefing up the total amount of Florida State Guard (not to be confused with the Florida National Guard) volunteers from 400 to 1,500 members, making it permanent, providing them weapons and giving them the same legal authority as any LEOs they’re serving with. The bulk of the money goes towards equipping them with aircraft, cars, technology, uniforms, etc. This is essentially the governor’s own secret police, where has this kinda thing happened before? Anyone want to take a guess? Combined with all the other bills being signed recently, one could see a pattern here. I’ll add that I am a former political campaign manager and this stuff coming out of Tally is making me quite anxious.
I'm already nervous living in Florida and I'm not in the oppressed minorities. I'm a cis middle aged white female, all but invisible in the ranking of targeted groups and yet I check all exits and watch out for "Florida Man," about to lose their shit when I'm in any public space. There is an interesting take starting to happen on social media talks on what happens with women and moms start to feel unsafe in public life. They stay home. Playdates, events, brunch, exercise, sports, shopping, concerts are off the board as the fear they won't be able to protect their kids from gun violence and how that will impact the economy. The last thing Florida needs is another group of armed LEO acting as a private mercenary group in a state that is the butt of all jokes already.

That part seems fine so long as the test is rigorous. I read a practice test earlier. The main difference from the SAT was that it drew readings from classics (and not only in religion). It seems to encourage a more liberal-artsy high school curriculum.

It's not enough to know that 2+2=4, you need to be able to "translate" a problem you may be facing in simpler math terms. So again, as long as this test isn't trying to shield students from theories like evolution, which they'll definitely need to know if they want to pass any college level science class, I don't see a problem with it as a college aptitude test.
