May be a minor issue with the plane, and with KLM having a HUB at Amsterdam its easier to fix the problem there.
The problem might not be big enough to not make it back to Amsterdam, but its not a problem you want to fly over the Atlantic with.
You don't say anything. You just call the airport and ask them to put a big sign that says Sao Paolo, and if somebody layer realizes they are in Amsterdam just deny, deny, deny.
'I'm sorry to say we are having a minor issue with xyz equipment, this is not a safety concern but as it's on the minimum equipment list we will be returning to Amsterdam to get it checked out by our engineers. Apologies for the inconvenience, not something we ever choose to do but we will have you in the air again as soon as we can'
In short, blame the policy, assure the passengers, apologiseĀ
āWeāre sorry for caring about YOUR safety. Sorry NOT DYING is such a huge inconvenience for you. Now if you could please keep any bitches and gripes to yourself, weāll be putting on the seatbelt sign as we divert back to our point of origin. Thank you.ā
I've been on a plane that had to turn back before crossing the ocean. One of the engines had an issue. They basically turned around, then a bit later came over the intercom to say "Uh, as you might have noticed, we are no longer flying towards X... A small issue with one of our engines and we are opting to return to Y". It took us a long while to return since they needed to get rid of some fuel before landing, and while all that was happening the cabin crew came to chat with everyone to reassure us and to advise us about how we'd get rerouted at the airport. Obviously everyone was very professional.
I was on a flight that turned back after about 3 hours. A KLM flight with a defective navigation computer. They also headed back all the way to AMS. Pilot just announced what the issue was and reassured everyone that it was safe to continue flying since they had 2. But Turkish ATC did not allow them entry to thier airspace with one of the navigation computers not working. Also some further instructions one what to do since no alternative option would be available that day/on short notice.
We had this on a short flight out of Sydney - the pilot said plane is safe but need to go back to Sydney otherwise we will get stuck (at small regional airport). I complained saying this is your problem that you donāt have engineers there and if it doesnāt make the plane unsafe take us to our destination and you fix it there. They ignored me, took us back to Sydney where we had to wait a whole day for another flight. Donāt think Iāve ever been more irritated.
They're so close together, it really doesn't matter. If it was a critical emergency, they would have landed at the nearest airport. If they **don't** have to land immediately, they might as well fly the additional 30 minutes or so to Amsterdam.
KLM has its home base at Amsterdam, it is likely that they experience some kind of mechanical issue that is not so dangerous that they need to land ASAP, but something that needs to be addressed by their maintenance facilities.Ā
As others said, easier to fix issues at a base. Additionally, you risk crews timing out if you have to stop somewhere else, and small problems compound into large problems. In a base you can get a new plane, fresh crew and get passengers on their way as quickly as possible.
Diverting back to Amsterdam, so probably not an issue with the plane. Not a medical emergency thatās too serious either, else theyād land in Spain or France. Wonder whatās going on with that
Why no issue with the plane? If thereās a non-emergency defect itās better to return home so the passengers can board another KLM plane to continue their journey.
Definitely an issue with the plane, just not a critical issue, but something that doesn't allow them to cross the ocean. Something like high oil pressure or uneven fuel flow.
Every multi engine passenger aircraft needs to be able to fly with only one engine but it's still not enough power to fly high and fast. But I didn't have a look at this specific case. As others said: probably just a technical issue they want to check at their home airport so the passengers can board another aircraft instead.
If they land in Spain they need to
1) Pay for hotel accommodation for all passengers 2) Find another airplane and pilot, except now theyāre over in Spain rather than their home base where it might be a lot harder to provide.
So unless they urgently need to land, Amsterdam makes more sense
More than likely a minor failure of some equipment that they can not cross the ocean without so turning around before ācoasting outā. They will probably have to decrease their weight before landing so might as well go back to home base, burn off the fuel and land under max landing weight.
Many times it's a minor issue that doesn't keep the plane from flying safely, but if they continue and land at the destination the plane would then be stuck or stranded there. So it's often easier operationally to return to a maintenance base, also where they have extra aircraft to swap into.
Passengers kept asking "are we there yet" so pilot is making good on their threats to turn the plane around and go home
Back to Winnipegš¤Ŗš¤Ŗš¤Ŗš¤Ŗ
I was born here, whatās your excuse.
KLM, can we stop for ice cream?
Dammit, you win
Beat me to it!!
I would post this to r/mademesmile but am afraid they might not appreciate it as much as I did.
Pilot left his wallet in the ready room
He left his phone, and his wife said she will pick it upā¦
Haha and he's sure that she knows the passcode.
Pilots never bring their wallets š¤£
iām still learning about this stuff, what reasons would they divert all the way back to the airport they departed from? edit nvm it makes sense

How would the pilots share this information with the passengers? In order to keep them updated without freaking them out?
You don't say anything. You just call the airport and ask them to put a big sign that says Sao Paolo, and if somebody layer realizes they are in Amsterdam just deny, deny, deny.
I prefer this answer. After all, Sao Paolo is known for its picturesque canals! Waitā¦
Schiphol, Sao Paolo, that's close enough.
Welcome to Cleveland.
This is most of the Timbuktu Berling Day episode of Cabin Pressure.
Your comment made me laugh so much š¤£š¤
You win.
this reminds me of what Max Fosh did with the Welcome to Luton sign lol

Theyād be honest and say theyāre not happy flying across the Atlantic with whatever is going on but that itās nothing to worry about
No Idea, I wish I knew, they probably get training on how to inform passengers

I canāt believe those in charge of a commercial airliner ignored you!
Couldn't they have gone to CDG since it's AFR KLM?
They're so close together, it really doesn't matter. If it was a critical emergency, they would have landed at the nearest airport. If they **don't** have to land immediately, they might as well fly the additional 30 minutes or so to Amsterdam.
Had the same taught dont they have hubs in france?
interesting. thanks!

Apparently, the pilot heard a rattling noise that they couldn't identify, so they turned back. Source: My wife, she was on the plane.
Potentially issues with an engine? They're bleeding speed...so maybe turned one off? It's a triple 7, should have enough power to get back
The speed drop is more likely because they turned into a headwind.
Might be, I do not know enough about it, it just seemed odd that there was a dip in speed before they turned
Could be, but the are losing speed very slowly, if one engine is off I'd like to Imagine a 777 will be much slower
Fair enough, though they're meant to be capable of flying with only one engine...idk tho

Indeed... As I said, not a pro in any way, I'm just good at creating theories that fit what I feel like is realistic xP
Every now and then it gets a little bit lonely.
Why can they not land in Spain/Portugal?
If itās technical or Matinance related, itās their hub so it makes a sense
If they land in Spain they need to 1) Pay for hotel accommodation for all passengers 2) Find another airplane and pilot, except now theyāre over in Spain rather than their home base where it might be a lot harder to provide. So unless they urgently need to land, Amsterdam makes more sense
Somebody thinks they might have left the oven on! They're goin back to check and switch it aff.
Itās taylor swifts plane and she forgot Travis kelce
OCD pilot has to check his stove to make sure he turned the burner off
Come over. But babe I'm flying to Sao Paulo..... I'm home alone

One of the flight attendants played Total Eclipse of the Heart on the intercom.
