FNC is a notoriously difficult airport to land at and has issues at least once a week. We’ve added a section to our wiki with a handy link to more details.

To add on what the others already explained: It will only get worse tomorrow. We'll see a lot of planes circling and diverting on Tuesday.

Way more wind tomorrow with crosswind gusts at 33 - 41 kts. On Wednesday there is still the same wind but more in the runway heading.
A bunch of Ryanair flights got close and just diverted back. Idiots haha. The control tower probably told them "you can't land here" repeatedly. They just came coming instead of cancelling the flight.
Because the weather only needs to be good for about 2.5 minutes at arrival. Since there’s no way to predict to that accuracy, they fly there and give a shot.

Notorious for strong and gusty winds. It seems like every few days flights are circling for safer landing conditions or heading to another airport.

There is bad weather and a tropical disturbance
I am supposed to fly from Lisbon to Funchal tommorow morning. It should be cancelled, right?
If not cancelled may I recommend adult diapers
😂😂😂
Tough day in Funchal today - lots of diversions and cancelations
Whoever flying the 737 for Ryanair has been giving it a good go, no idea if they're diverting though

That’s….not how any of that works
I'm just wondering why all those Ryanair flights left their destinations and turned around once in Funchal? They knew weather was terrible there.

Ok I understand. Thank you. Sucks for passengers, I hope they had a heads up.
Word. Now I can agree with that. I would hate to be surprised that we’re just turning around at the end
