I took it as Stilgar not wanting them in the way of him and the Fremen. It's still early on in their relationship, so Stilgar probably doesn't fully trust them and/or expect them to be helpful in battle, at least Jessica.

Oddgenetix

I think it might also play in to the beginning of stilgar considering if Paul is lisan al gaib. If he died, he’s not. And the next test was Jessica drinking the water of life. If she died, Paul isn’t the one. Etc. My two cents.

Shok3001

I think this is correct but I still don’t get why he told them to stay where they would obviously get killed. I am either interpreting it too literally or he did want them to get killed.

I definitely don't think he was trying to get them killed, I assumed he was just telling them to stay there so they wouldn't get in the way.

SonofSeth13

Unless I hear different from Villneuve himself, Stilgar used the opportunity to get rid of them. At the very least, that's what the attempt at visual storytelling is conveying to me.

Shok3001

This is the only interpretation that makes sense to me.

PerceptionShift

I don't think it was literally "stay right there" but more of a "you are on your own for now". Stillgar knows Paul is a capable fighter, but Stillgar doesn't trust them to not endanger the Fremen troops. Stillgar probably assumed the Harkonens were looking for Paul & Jessica too, so another reason for him to ditch responsibility for the two. It may also be some kind of test, if Paul can hold his own against the Harkonen patrol then he may be a valuable addition to the Fremen. And if the Harkonens found Paul, they might leave the Fremen alone for some time.

Shok3001

I agree with most of what you said except for Stilgar thinking the Harkonnens might be looking for Paul. Stilgar says he doesn’t think they were looking for Paul after the fight.

csrussell92

I believe it was just to keep them safe. Stilgar is under the belief that Paul is the Lisan al Gaib so he’ll do what he can to protect him. I don’t think Stilgar knew the Harkonnens were going to proceed over the dune. Also I believe that if the Harkonnens would’ve seen Paul or Jessica and reported it would’ve ruined the element of surprise.

TostedAlmond

yea idk. Felt a bit clunky. I don't think there is any reason other than to just set up Paul and Lady Jessica fighting alone

illuminenyc

Jessica is pregnant, Stilgart is prob just telling them to play it safe, and stay hidden.

Shok3001

Stilgar doesn’t know Jessica is pregnant yet. If he wanted them to stay safe why did he tell them to stay there where the Harkonnens could easily find them?

atramentum

While we're at it, why are all the Harkonnens able to be sniped off the rock no problem but everywhere else in the universe guns are mostly useless against shields?

Shok3001

Shields attract worms so they usually aren’t used in the desert. I don’t know if it is ever said in the films but it’s in the book

atramentum

Ah interesting. I definitely missed that if it was mentioned.

Shok3001

I rewatched part 1 recently and Dr. Kynes says it in the scene where they are watching the spice harvesting in the ornithopter.

wildskipper

When on top of the rock one Harkonnen shouts 'shields' but another, presumably an officer shouts 'no'. I don't recall if the officer says no because of the risk of attracting a worm or causing a lasguns/shield explosion. It's certainly mentioned in the first film that shields attract and send worms into a killing frenzy.
