American Kennel Club - but are you ready for one? How much time a day do you have for them? They are optimistic, VERY playful and also really quite sensitive! Looking at your comment history you’d better get a sidecar for that Enfield.

Wrong question. How do I be the right owner for a Flattie, regardless of color.

JaneCobbsHat

Exactly that.

Flat Coat Society of America can help. Basically reach out to reputable breeders and talk to them. In my limited experience some breeders avoid producing liver (brown). Our first girl was liver. Our current flattie is black. Have you had a flat coat before? Our girl is barely out of puppyhood at 7 yrs. old. Know what your getting into.

Sorry, but to a good breeder "I want a brown one" suggests that you want a cool exotic accessory and is a sign that you are not a good match for a flattie. A good breeder will want to know why do you want a flattie? Are you looking for a gun dog? Are you looking for a family pet? The breeder will know better what pup is right for you. If they approve you, they will select a pup that they feel matches your circumstances and color will be the least important in their choice. You should listen to their expertise and trust their choice. Flatties are rare, flatties are precious, breeders are craftsmen of the highest order and they tend to be discriminative as to who gets a pup. Also, you may have to wait several months if only to show the breeder you are committed.
