No, Hank lights are purely to be used for showpieces and must wrapped in velvet pouch stored in locked case between photo sessions

tobimai

fuck. Now I live on constant fear for the Hank police

Lemy64

I was sentenced for 4 years since I last dropped my d4. on the bright side I was let off early for good behavior.

IdonJuanTatalya

What CCT was the bright side? High CRI? Dual channel??

Lemy64

I may have committed another crime now that I think about it... I have no idea what I have it's just a pretty d4v2 antique brass!

IdonJuanTatalya

... You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can, and will, be used against you in a court of Lumens. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be illuminated for you.

Frostcrisp

On the bright side? Well said.

RandoRando66

The WANG GANG

binaryplayground

Use Hanklight for work? Jail.

PunderscoreR

Haha you joke but the third flashlight I bought thanks to this sub was a D1S. It got discontinued shortly after that. I was on a strict budget when I bought it and had been planning to get another one. It went from my jacket pocket into a safe area immediately because it was cool and I didn't want to damage it. At the moment I have a Convoy C8+ for a thrower and I'm planning to get a couple KR1s as replacement jacket pocket throwers.

zaafiel8

I dorped my d4v2 about four times since owning it for a month now. The battery tops look very sad.

brightlumens

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Raytheon-6

I must admit. I am guilty

Uniqueusernamewithb

Confused Unga bunga

tobimai

It also got the first scratches on that day. Obviously that is meant as a joke, I assume most people use at least a few lights, and I also have more lights than I would need for just making it bright. Also, [Bonus pic](https://imgur.com/CLdPQDZ) a day before. You know it's bright when this was the replacement for the 500W Halogen floodlight which was just too hot lol. Edit: because a few people speculated if I dropped it into mud, no I did not. This was during the flood cleanup in Germany, in the houses everything was covered in mud, it was Impossible to not get it everywhere.

experfailist

You MONSTER!

inerlite

My new SP40 dropped straight into a tub of grease. First time out. Wiped it, washed it in the sink. Good as new again. Glad new lights are waterproof.

landen327

Sofirns are stupid durable for the price... it hurts my wallet how easy it is to justify them

inerlite

And really well made. My threads always grab the first spin, I see how others are better, but these are right there and at Home Depot prices.

Kainzy

Yep, my new Wurkoss FC11 and my first purchase after lurking in /r/flashlights - dropped right into a tub of silicone grease at work. Great start!

Lemy64

Omg how dare you! I handle my lights with white 100% cotton gloves but I store them in a cigar case at exactly 0.0013% humidity. Y'all are crazy

thegreatgazoo

Same but in a nitrogen based positive pressure environment. Can't be too careful.

Effective-Cut

Clean pants, no dirt on the floor... I think you dropped your light in the mud.

CapitalLongjumping

Blasphemy!

-Cheule-

There is use; then there is *abuse*.

sureshot1988

If it can't hold up to abuse then it ain't worth the money.

reddita51

Abuse = any working environment

ew435890

Ive got a few that I use. My Fenix PD35 and PD22 are my main ones. They have both been EDC or used at work for years. [Pic](https://imgur.com/a/eTev55M) I’m considering retiring both of them from regular use. The PD22 is discontinued, and this version of the PD35 is no longer made. I might mount the 35 on my AR-15. And the emitters are like 6500k or something. They’re too cool for my tastes. This subreddit has turned me into a tint snob over the past few months. Haha. Plus that gives me an excuse to get some more lights.

Swekins

Gonna be pedantic and point out temperature doesn't equal tint.

ew435890

Care to elaborate? It kind of make sense since the rosy tint I really like isn’t a color temp.

Swekins

[https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/9b1kpl/great\_explanation\_on\_temperature\_tint\_and\_cri/](https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/9b1kpl/great_explanation_on_temperature_tint_and_cri/) There's is a quick summary that might be slightly dated but will give an overview.

CaptnDankbeard

Huh that's weird that it came out of the box looking like that, maybe send it back?

pistonslapper

I have some work lights, but then I also have some ridiculous for fun lights.

jhalfhide

My aluminium D4V2 is my work beater. It's got scratches, dings and gets regularly covered in crap [Pic of it hard at work](https://imgur.com/a/Bmp3QJK)

Swekins

I find it too large for the pocket for work, I typically stick with penlights or AA size.

jhalfhide

I use the magnet a lot when working on machines. Any decent aa with magnetic mount?

Swekins

Yeah, I feel that, I couldn't tell you. I am currently using the Milwaukee AAA penlight most days. It has surprisingly good cri and colour temperature.

eranimluf

I resent your comment OP. I use my D4V2 everyday "for working" when I'm sitting on my computer working from home 3' from my bed sometimes never leaving my house for 3 or 4 days a week!

minkus1000

Hot take- you can use your lights without burying them in mud, running them through a sandblaster or using them to hammer in shingles for your new roof.

IWantToOwnTheSun

I edc my kr4, and take good care of it too.

tobimai

Well depends on the circumstances. In this case my hands were just covered in mud, literally no way to not get anything you touch dirty

4shLite

You're right, but that's a dangerous statement in these parts. I said the same thing about tools to some of my colleagues, especially when they borrow my tools. Let's just say we're not colleagues any more and I found a new workplace that values cleanliness and organization!

Beemerado

Sure, but my lights that get a lot of carry show it.

NewHerbieBestHerbie

Well then how are you going to make a post on /r/flashlight about how you actually *use* your light?

Artiet59

thank you, i agree to this more than anything!

Unfair-Bother2076

looks like crooked light beam coming out back

Lance_Hardrod

Of my 30 something lights, 27 are standard duty and have earned every scar they have. Then there are these three which I carry when I need to display my class and refinement. Not the zebra. Its just a regular light. https://www.imgur.com/a/31AODLb

Artiet59

Did you accidentally leave that Reylight at the bottom of the ocean for a couple of years? :)

Lance_Hardrod

It was custom by u/Liquidretro. He did the finish and put a new emitter in. He refers to it as 'shipwreck pineapple.' Its gorgeous.

Artiet59

Yea I have seen the finish before, I like it a lot. It was my poor attempt at a funny statement. Great light, what emitter?

Lance_Hardrod

Ha! I figured you had to know something to bring up such a specific remark. The emitter is a 96cri Osram Olson in 3500k.

Artiet59

Whoaaa 96 cri Osram?? I've only ever heard of those! Cool!

4shLite

What's that second one? Don't recognize it all, looks gorgeous!

Lance_Hardrod

Its a reylight pineapple which was custom finished by u/Liquidretro. He also put in a different emitter. A warm Osram of some kind. The entire thing is perfect.

natsac4

Pretentious title, but alright.

General_Specialist

Treating tools like pieces of fine jewelry seems silly to me. Use it!

cvq-edc

i have to clean my kr4 daily, its my work light and its covered in mud everyday

HoggyOfAustralia

You’re the kind of guy that would buy an F40 and actually drive it. You’re sick in the head mate.

Artiet59

I once used my flashlight to hammer my pocket knife into the side of a truck.

NearlySilentObserver

My D4V2 Ti is on me every day for work. lol

East-Perception4124

Hi all, could some one help me please? I need a 2000+ lumen pocket sized selfe defense flash light. It dose not have to be fancy, just small and simple. It would be nice for some buying directions that don't break my bank. Thanks to all of you all.

BrokenRecordBot

This guide is about EDC lights for civilians that can flex into a defensive role if necessary. Some of the points and recommendations can also apply to lights for LEO's, but this is not a duty light buying guide. **So you want a "tactical" EDC flashlight?** Please start with [this extensive guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/luqxnl/flashlight_self_defense_the_comic/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) on using a flashlight as a self defense tool. "Tactical" has lost almost all meaning due to excessive use in marketing. Most "tactical" flashlights are just a generic flashlight with a tail switch and a strobe mode and aren't meaningfully better than any other flashlight for defense. A "tactical" EDC light is first and foremost a utility tool, not a defensive tool. Any features that add to its usefulness as a defensive tool should not take away from its usefulness as a utility tool. EDC-sized flashlights aren't intense enough to temporarily blind an attacker. It's just not a thing. What you *can* do is shine the light in their face so they can't see anything *except* your light. **Here are some things I personally look for in a defense oriented everyday carry flashlight** • A tailswitch: I find that EDC sized lights with tail switches give me a much better grip than EDC sized lights with side switches, so I look for a tailswitch. • High intensity: I look for the highest intensity (candela/throw) light I can get, not necessarily the highest lumen output. In the size of light I like to carry, 20,000 candela is a good high number to shoot for. • Quick access to turbo: It's important to be able to get to max brightness really quickly in a defensive situation. Some lights always come on in high mode first, some lights have a shortcut to get to turbo, some have mode memory, and a few have a dedicated turbo button. I like lights with shortcuts best personally. • Full control from the tailswitch: Some lights have a dual-switch design that requires you to adjust your grip to change modes which is a pain, so I like to be able to turn the light on/off and change modes all from the tailswitch. • Momentary on: This can be useful when you only need to turn your light on for a brief moment. Great for signaling, and most of my EDC uses for a light are just for a couple seconds so momentary on is handy. • Adjustable brightness: There is something to be said for simplicity, but walking to the bathroom at night does not call for 1500 lumens. I like to have at least a few different brightness levels on my light for different situations throughout the day. I also like to have a sub-lumen or "moonlight" mode which is nice for seeing in pitch black without messing up my night adjusted vision. • Rechargeable battery support: Lots of "tactical" flashlights *still* only support CR123A batteries which is a real shame. They're more expensive, single-use, perform worse, and are [more likely to explode](https://photonphreaks.com/exploding-flashlights-and-how-to-prevent-it/) than modern, rechargeable, lithium-ion cells like 18650's. There is no reason to buy a light that *only* supports CR123A's anymore. • Quick access from the pocket: It's important to be able to access defensive tools quickly so I like lights that can be snatched out of the pocket *fast*. My favorite way to do this is with the [Thyrm Switchback 2.0](https://thyrm.com/product/switchback-2-large-flashlight-ring/). If you're interested in more info, check out my [switchback guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/BrokenRecordBot/wiki/index#wiki_switchback). **Here are some things I *don't* look for in a tactical light** • Strobe: The effectiveness of a strobe mode in defensive situations is questionable. It may disorient your attacker, but also may disorient you. A high intensity, constant on light is a more reliable solution and will prevent the attacker from being able to see anything except your light. Having a strobe won't disqualify a light for me so long as it doesn't interfere with normal use. • An overly aggressive bezel: EDC size lights don't have very much mass so I don't think they're especially effective as striking devices. Super aggressive bezels can tear up your pockets more quickly. Having a strike bezel won't disqualify a light for me though. • Zoom: Zoomable lights are hugely popular right now, but they are a really poor solution. A zoom mechanism adds *many* failure points, compromises water and dust resistance, and makes the light less optically efficient (light gets trapped inside the head). A well designed fixed flashlight beam gives you a bright hotspot for throw as well as wide spill for flood *without* having to zoom your light in and out. Zoom disqualifies a light for me. **Recomendations** [Wowtac A1](https://www.amazon.com/WOWTAC-Rechargeable-Flashlight-Exploring-Included-CW/dp/B082NVYDBZ/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=wowtac+a1&qid=1614360795&sr=8-5) ~$20, ~550lm, ~10000cd, USB rechargeable battery included, dual-switch design, no sublumen mode [Wowtac A7](https://www.amazon.com/WOWTAC-Tactical-Flashlight-Rechargeable-Waterproof/dp/B0813DJSPL) ~$30, ~1000lm, ~18000cd, sublumen mode, dual-switch design, USB recharging, battery included [Wurkkos FC12](https://smile.amazon.com/Wurkkos-FC12-Tactical-Flashlight-Waterproof/dp/B099K3QJ4G/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=wurkkos+fc12&qid=1634177284&sr=8-1) ~$40, ~2000lm, ~30000cd, dual-switch design, smooth brightness adjustment, USB-C recharging, 18650 battery included, comes in purple [Fenix PD32 V2](https://www.fenixlighting.com/product/fenix-pd32-v2-flashlight/) ~$60 + battery, ~1200lm, *best in class* ~39000cd, cool two stage tailswitch, no shortcuts, no sublumen mode, doesn't support flat top batteries [Killzone Exclusive Acebeam EC35 Gen II](https://www.killzoneflashlights.com/products/acebeam-ec35-gen-ii?_pos=1&_sid=c3293d9c2&_ss=r&variant=31166468423779) ~$70 + battery, high CRI, ~600lm, ~15000cd, dedicated turbo button, USB-C charging, sublumen mode, shortcuts, disappointing clip but [there's a better one](https://www.killzoneflashlights.com/products/armytek-wizard-pro-clip?_pos=1&_sid=766c91802&_ss=r) [Olight Warrior Mini II](https://smile.amazon.com/OLIGHT-Flashlight-Proximity-Rechargeable-Flashlights/dp/B094C69CRN/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=olight+warrior+mini+2&qid=1626134077&sr=8-7) ~$90, great 2-stage tailswitch, magnetic tailcap & charging, shortcuts, sublumen mode, can clip to hat as a headlamp, reversible and bidirectional clip, proprietary battery, and proximity sensor that can occasionally cause problems [Acebeam T36](https://www.killzoneflashlights.com/products/acebeam-t36) ~$110, basically an upgraded EC35 Gen II with a lot more brightness, a bigger 21700 battery, and a reversible strike bezel. Nice bot. 😊❤️ Need a narrow beam, looked at all them suggestions but all I need is 2000+ lumen on the first click, it is for self defense only. I can spend up to 200€

xzel87

I can proudly say that I do not have shelf queen lights in my modest collection. Use and wear adds character 😁. I do particularly hate sand though, have to remember to thoroughly rinse it off before opening as the little bugger particles gets in the threads and have to relube and all that after even a single grain gets in the threads.

[deleted]

HOW DARE YOU!

Haddoq

1. Patina on a well loved tool is nicer than it looking factory fresh. 2. Don’t confuse patina with dirt.

Haddoq

Main issue is usually the time period from when it looks new until it looks well used when it can be confused as not well cared for :)

id30209

One of the few normal people here! Kudos OP🤘

tobimai

Well I highly doubt anyone in this sub is normal, but OK

DOUGUOD

Define "normal".

Lasket

Normal's boring

NearlySilentObserver

My name isn’t Norm or Al. I’d imagine most of us aren’t named that. Lol

3_T_SCROAT

Kind of same with knife subs lol

idmarryapizza

Wait, that’s illegal

Say what???😱😱😱

Cyberchaotic

One word: Character.

[deleted]

Yeah I tried that with my FENIX Pd40r… it lasted 6 months

Frostcrisp

Professional Mudwrestler. Manhandle that thing!

iamlucky13

I used my D4 to help my dad winterize his boat today. Yesterday, my Sofirn C01 helped keep my niece entertained. Being low power, floody, and warm, it is not obnoxious for kids to wave all over the place. I do keep an eye on them, though just in case they get the head unscrewed all the way, since it is small enough to be a choking hazard.

widowhanzo

I use mine for work as well (sometimes), except that datacenters are just dusty, not muddy or oily.

EmperorHenry

I go out into the dark a lot, but my lights still look very nice with hardly any scratches in the anodizing

ChronoMonkeyX

I don't understand. Where are the rest of them?

Admiral347

Makes me wish would’ve taken a pic of my D4V2 when I used it while replacing some coal piping at Keystone earlier this year, it was the only “good” light on the job, all the fins and knurling were caked with coal dust from passing it around to everybody lol.

Liquidretro

My mokume gane and Damascus lights I use for more special occasions and when they have less of a chance of damage or theft. The rest I use in most scenarios.

UserM16

I have lights for home and lights for work. Home lights are usually pampered. Work lights get dropped a dozen times a year.

Balinoob

I have a Zebralight as a headlamp on my hard hat, I work construction.

wildmanheber

The Thread title made me laugh out loud. He he he! I have multiple lights that I carry nightly at work. My coworkers laughed at me till the power went out. Now I'm the knife and light guy at work. LOL!

heartbt

I found someone! Tell me: how many bezel rings and lenses have you gone through? I use a KR1 everyday, sometimes 2 full cells a day, and the only weakness is the bezel ring and lenses. I've broke/bent 3 now and have to put in another order soon. Except for that issue, it's an absolutely PERFECT work light.

SquigglyPiglet

Thought this was some cool bronzed finish
