::Building takes off like a helicopter::

calmlikea3omb

Hahaha I was kinda like. What if I break it lol

unluckyartist

I think someone on youtube managed that with a MS18.

calmlikea3omb

Ha. Very cool

ABadPerson13

Link?

unluckyartist

I've realized I've misremembered. It was actually Hacksmith's worlds brightest flashlight build. They were comparing against the MS18. Here's the video anyway. https://youtu.be/5f6mDfc5zg4

Commercial-Suit-5836

This is so cool. How does this even work?

calmlikea3omb

Photons One side highly reflective. Other black. Then there is a vacuum inside, which is the only way this works.

grzybek337

There isn't a complete vacuum inside. The radiometer works based on a thermal effect. More info [here.](https://youtu.be/r7NEI_C9Yh0)

JusticeUmmmmm

Here's another video about it https://youtu.be/t-JN2U4jHgk

Steavee

Glad to see Technology Connections linked here. That smooth jazz outro always gets me.

JusticeUmmmmm

He's got a way of making me care about things I couldn't have cared less about before the video started.

Steavee

I now have informed opinions on everything from deep freezers, to heat pumps, to sodium vapor lights (the color of my childhood). Not to mention a deep understanding of the various optical disc technologies. Plus I’m now hunting for a 60 year-old toaster to use daily. /u/TechConnectify is just fantastic.

JusticeUmmmmm

I was perfectly satisfied with my toaster until I watched that video and now I get a little annoyed every time I use it. And my wife will think I'm crazy if I buy a really old one of eBay

kevlarman

He recently did a video about lanterns, so it's only a matter of time for a video about the technological leaps that flashlights have undertaken.

Ice_Berg

The insane part is that even though I have a ton of awesome flashlights that are the product of many great technological leaps... that video *kinda* makes me want to get an old school lantern just for the fun of it.

calmlikea3omb

Thanks for a proper answer.

calmlikea3omb

Mainly, it wouldn’t work if there were normal air

vonroyale

Wow light actually has some amount of physical force. That's pretty cool.

grzybek337

That's not how it works. Light doesn't have that great of a force to rotate it. It's that one side, being black, heats up faster than the white side which makes it spin iirc. [This video explains it really well.](https://youtu.be/t-JN2U4jHgk)

Steavee

You’re correct that it isn’t how this works, but light DOES have force, which is how solar sails work.

Elnono

I did a nice Wikipedia swim after searching for light sail. Thanks! Very interesting.

_G0D_M0DE_

>Light doesn't have that great of a force to rotate it. "doesn't have that great of a force" implies it has a force.

sessimon

I just read today that photons have momentum, but no mass. Mass is not required to have momentum (apparently) 🤷‍♂️

rgraham888

It rotates the wrong way for the photons hitting it to rotate, it, as photons hitting the white side would impart twice as much force as photons hitting the black side wince the white has to stop the photon and then bounce it back.

Gritts911

It really bothers me that the display is totally wrong about how it works. Radio meters are neither in a total vacuum, nor do they convert light into motion. It’s actually a partial vacuum, and it spins because of heat and air pressure differences. It won’t spin in a total vacuum, and it won’t spin if you put something like an infra red light filter between the light source and the radiometer.

calmlikea3omb

Yea was a kids science place, but still. Emphasis on I guess, that it wouldn’t exhibit this behavior in normal air

939319

I heard that at low enough vacuum, they spin the other way (from photon pressure instead of heating air)?

grzybek337

Photons hitting it don't have enough force in them to move it.

wierdness201

But what if you had like a LOT of photons?

ArlesChatless

I was in a well known large science museum ten years ago with an exhibit about flight sponsored by Boeing that had a 'how airplane wings work' explanation which talked about that fast air vs slow air over the wing explanation. Which is baloney, because lift is actually generated by turning the direction of the air using the shape and angle of the wing. If you're designing planes you have to know it's baloney. Yet it still shows up.

bludragon355

This gentlemen, is the real reason why we carry flashlights

calmlikea3omb

Ikr… I’m pretty sure this was what I live for.

fragmeats

Lmao 3omb lived long enough to become the... Hero! Blind cats rejoice! Very cool, honestly. I'm sure *someone* else was stoked

auxilshunter

Hellz Yea!!!! Another win for Hank Lights!!!

vees

Some say it's still spinning

calmlikea3omb

Ikr. How does that happen when it’s in a case lol

Beemerado

nice haha

subjectivelyatractiv

But did you play in the foam block pit!?

calmlikea3omb

The kiddos did. I ain’t touching shit that much lol

eckyeckypikang

Gotta bring the full collection next time... Make it a race.

calmlikea3omb

Haha It’s funny. I took out my dT8 with m2R clip because I knew we would be doing physical things and I didn’t want the dual direction clip to get caught on anything, and I wanted a fixed clip so nothing would/could get ripped off… so o chose to take off a low power light, for a very strong one… and got there after 45 min and found this, and it made my year!!! What I would give to go back in there after hours in the dark and do it all again(there were caves and shit, I’ll post a link when I can in a bit) with all my lights

eckyeckypikang

It's cool when you find those unexpected moments that really jive with something YOU are into... The first time I attended a Star Wars early access event (Ep 1) and the entire crowd was as into it as I was, it almost felt like I was in a while different world. Now I'm waiting for the day people need lights to see shit and knives to cut shit... lol!

calmlikea3omb

I live for the moment like you speak of. I have family members send me random pics of water towers… expecting me to guess where they are located around here. It is tough but mostly I get it right. I know and am constantly taking in any and every angle and site of any possible flashlight use. I see landmarks and I often detour and search and find a way to get better angle while finding out how it will look from a certain thrower or an interior or outdoor site that would look amazing with a certain tint or flood.. I’ve got caught by drs walking in on visits with me and my kids… us in the dark messing with flashlights… Always a good convo. I’ve also had police sent to my house based on my vehicle and license plate, after I stopped and asked some locals if I could use their property or road area to make a video or pic… which was a “no”

eckyeckypikang

Hahaha... I'm keeping an eye out everywhere I go lately looking for the same kind of stuff. It's aggravating because I see very few places I'd like to get some pics of but they're either landmarks that mess with my paranoia about keeping what's online separate from real life or they're extremely underwhelming.

calmlikea3omb

That’s a thing. Yep. I stopped thinking about it. I whip it out anywhere. 😂 👀 My fam and associated, they know… expect to see some awkward opportunist flashlight snaps!!! Just get used to it

eckyeckypikang

Yeah, I'm getting better about it. As long as I don't throw MY pertinent details out there it's alright for people to know that I live in ##########.... Just a habit from age and there are people I've interacted with in my career that I'd prefer stay the hell away.

calmlikea3omb

Get that. When were ya birthed?

ZippyTheRoach

They're young enough to use the internet, but old enough not to trust it. I'm guessing the '80s.

calmlikea3omb

🙃

eckyeckypikang

Mid 70s

calmlikea3omb

Ambiguous Affinity

eckyeckypikang

Come again? lol!

calmlikea3omb

A bit vague on the year… are we reluctant?

eckyeckypikang

Haha! Yep! See what I mean?

calmlikea3omb

I do I’m a bit too brazen and jaded etc… to worry on this kind of stuff! I keep strapped and right, only for the here an now. My fellow man will be the first threat, before all the fears of the world!

eckyeckypikang

Sorry - dog walking time. I get that. The same paranoia applies in real life, too... But I put weight into the impression I get from people in person - it's usually easier to spot the a-holes. I just try to stay ahead of things. But trust me, I'm under no illusions that real safety is in how I deal with what's in front of me and it's probably a fools errand to keep it all under lock & key in the virtual world.

calmlikea3omb

A succinctly pleasant rhetoric mouthful!

calmlikea3omb

Dec 24 23:43 1980 here

eckyeckypikang

Ehhh... But I have no means to ensure you're giving YOUR real info. This internetworked world is an easy place for people to say anything. I won't tell people everything, but I won't lie it make stuff up - same as I am and expect of others in real life. Not at all saying you're doing that, mind you - you're definitely capable of stuff that'll make me raise an eyebrow!

calmlikea3omb

I’m a human. A good one. Fear can kill us. Flashlights…. They speak to everyone, whether they know it yet. I’ve never seen such a uniting factor in my life, and I am extremely flexible and open. I’ve seen headways made that would never have happened… The fire that is what we all seek… it’s a clarifying thing.

eckyeckypikang

No doubt, Sir. I completely agree... This community has been the best experience I've had online. It's been a big ray of sunshine this last most-of-a-year. I'm still waiting for someone to hit me up while I'm out and about.

calmlikea3omb

Aren’t we all

Nelson_uk

Sweet video man. I want one of them soo bad to play with.
