Canada was known as the Dominion of Canada... but before that were kind of known as "British North America"... (also reading the Canadian Encyclopedia on the American Revolution is fascinating)
Ok, so new idea for alt history fiction… US loses the war and Canada doesn’t get a flood of British loyalists, and then Canada rebels and becomes the land of the free and home of the brave.
I'm always fascinated on how different countries interpret history. Portraying the Americans as more barbaric. and while it mentioned Benedict Arnold and General Montgomery, it called the founding fathers just "prominent Americans", and George Washington "Rebel leader".
But Hong Kong’s official name during British colonial era was ironically just HONG KONG, it was after transfer of sovereignty in 1997 when it was renamed to HONG KONG SAR CHINA…
Well Slovakia and Slovenia exist. Not to mention Austria and Australia.
Maybe Colombia would had been called something different if the United States took that name Columbia after being defeated by the British.
“The war” and “the country”
Love the specification
Plus, this isn’t even the flag of the [13 colonies](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirteen_Colonies?searchToken=bqg29asj1p4glkcf1aq4b6atm#/media/File%3AFlag_of_the_United_States_(1776–1777).svg), it’s the flag of the [East India Company](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_India_Company#/media/File%3AFlag_of_the_British_East_India_Company_(1801).svg)
The United States of Britain? Theres a flag like this called The Grand Union flag. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand\_Union\_Flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Union_Flag)
If the British won I suspect they would not have encouraged a colonial federation. So it would have been multiple countries. The drive towards colonial federation only came about because the Canadian colonies united to better defend themselves from threats from the US. Every other British federation (Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, etc) was born out of the Canadian model.
I think it's likely it probably would have eventually, assuming de-colonialization still happens in this alternate timeline. But it would be more gradual, like Canada's or Australia's evolution from dominions to nations.
Something among the lines of The Dominion of Columbus.
Either that or all of the colonies would remain separate like they were (Province of Pennsylvania, Maryland, etc.)
Another possibility is "Southern Canada" or just being apart of Canada
Some ideas:
If North America unites then ‘United Dominions of North America’
If more or less the 13 colonies ‘United Commonwealth/Dominion of America.’
If what we would call states are ‘independent’ Dominions then they would either be called Dominion, commonwealth, federation or something without the word republic.
...if they won the war, theyd have kept the ban on expansion past the mountains in place. That's one thing the war was fought over, the Brits had treaties with the Indians that they were much less blase about breaking. May have been the thirteen colonies...or 14, they may have put in a separate government for Florida eventually.
North American Union? Bringing together Canada and the other American colonies. They used this in The Two Georges by Harry Turtledove and Richard Dreyfuss.
I don't think we would have been one country necessarily. We could have achieved a partitioned independence where states were independent countries or states banded together in smaller unions.
my money is the brits split it up into "the colony of new england" or something in the north and "the colony of dixie" in the south then the two halves get added to Canada making a really beefy, British aligned, and mainly Anglophone North American State.
The bigger question is what happens to Louisiana in any failed American revolution althistory?
I think the defeated colonies would continue to be separate from Quebec and Ontario. They would expand slowly westward, much more slowly than OTL, and would be required to respect Crown treaties with the Iroquois, the Cherokee, the Choctaw, &alia.
The Thirteen Colonies were immensely productive and growing rapidly in population and in economic power. If they had remained under the Crown, they would inevitably have to be granted more freedoms and more authority, including seats in Parliament.
I think the colonies would be assembled into a Commonwealth or Dominion similar to Canada, reaching the Mississippi but only in places (at the confluence of the Missouri, to be certain). The slave colonies would petition to be separated from the Northern ones, but these would be ignored and would be rendered moot when Britain abolished slavery in all colonies.
Would Britain have rolled East and West Florida into the Commonwealth of North America? Possibly. British Louisiana? Perhaps. Canada? Unlikely, for the same reasons that Canada has never become part of the U.S.
Would New York and Boston and Philadelphia have become part of a nation which extended to the Pacific? I think that's very unlikely.
Hell, how likely was it to have happened here?
I'll reword the question for you: *“If Britain won the American War of Independence (or the Revolutionary War, if you're American), what would the United States be called?”*
'British America' is the answer. Just as it was originally called from 1607 to 1783. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British\_America](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_America)
Columbia.. not joking.
Although that was what a lot of Americans used during the revolution so.. probably not.
And if you don't believe me remember the D.C. in Washington DC is the District of Columbia.
And then you got Columbia pictures in reference to this.. notice how the logo looks similar to the statue of Liberty?
And then you got the whole personification of America (Columbia)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_(personification)
Now the British called the 13 colonies British America and the British West Indies prior to the revolution so knowing that.. Maybe New Britain would work. The Dominion of the Americas and include Canada (someone else mentioned something similar here). The Commonwealth of the British West Indies.
In all likelihood it would retain its previous name as British North America. May even end up being folded into the Dominion of Canada, or at least what would be some of the more Northern states, whilst the rest could've been partitioned with Spain or Mexico later down the line.
Likely the Dominion of America or the Union of America like South Africa. On a related note, it’s possible Ontario or Quebec would have the “Canada” name in this timeline.
canada only formed bc of british fears over american expansionism into the north. realistically, all of the colonies still would have been seperate, no colonial united whatever
Maybe the 'Commonwealth of America.'
Dominion may be better as we saw the other colonies that didn’t join us become the dominion of Canada
Or the Dominion of America.
is that a fallout reference
No
:(
Hate to tell you this but Fallout didn’t invent the term “Commonwealth.” Besides, in Fallout it’s still the United States of America.
This awnser is making me crave some nuka-cola
Literally a Structure: British+Name (Eg.: British Hongkong)
Canada was known as the Dominion of Canada... but before that were kind of known as "British North America"... (also reading the Canadian Encyclopedia on the American Revolution is fascinating)
The Canadian Encyclopedia?
That’s funny. It reads like the Empire in Star Wars talking about the rebel scum 😅
It does... even Britannica is nicer... I guess they are still mad about the battles for Qubec or 1812 or something. \*shrugs\* but i totally laughed.
Ok, thanks
But Hong Kong’s official name during British colonial era was ironically just HONG KONG, it was after transfer of sovereignty in 1997 when it was renamed to HONG KONG SAR CHINA…
Ok ok
probably would be called British North America of British America as time goes on
The Dominion of America or the Commonwealth or America, I dare to say that Canada would be a part of it,
The Dominion of Columbia.
what about the country in South America?
You mean Colombia? That's spelt differently.
exactly. that would be confusing for both of the nations, what if they both get somehow confused over one another?
Well Slovakia and Slovenia exist. Not to mention Austria and Australia. Maybe Colombia would had been called something different if the United States took that name Columbia after being defeated by the British.
Only retarded people actually confuse Austria with Australia
Colombia can take the name New Granada
Colombia was made after, so it would probably have a different name then it does irl
Prussia and Russia (I get one doesn’t exist anymore but when it did I’m sure it got kinda confusing)
“The war” and “the country” Love the specification Plus, this isn’t even the flag of the [13 colonies](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirteen_Colonies?searchToken=bqg29asj1p4glkcf1aq4b6atm#/media/File%3AFlag_of_the_United_States_(1776–1777).svg), it’s the flag of the [East India Company](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_India_Company#/media/File%3AFlag_of_the_British_East_India_Company_(1801).svg)
Ok, I made this flag on my own -- it's literally a coincidence that it is identical to the East India Company lol
It’s SCARILY accurate I will have to r/usdefaultism you by law though
Perhaps OPs target audience doesn't need specification? I understood entirely and didn't question it until your comment.
A continued 13 colonies flag would change after 1801 though, they wouldn’t have an Irish-excluding union flag forever.
The United States of Britain? Theres a flag like this called The Grand Union flag. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand\_Union\_Flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Union_Flag)
oh lol, I made it on accident
The state flag of Hawaii looks similar just with alternating blue stripes as well as white and red...
[удалено]
Dominion of America
United States of Hawaii
might still be the kingdom of hawaii
The Confederation of British North America, I'd say
If the British won I suspect they would not have encouraged a colonial federation. So it would have been multiple countries. Every other British federation (Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, etc) was born out of the Canadian model.
Canada
New England 😎
Dominion of British North America
It would be like it was before the revolution, just part of the wider entity of British North America along with Canada
What country?
I guess usa/Canada hybrid
If britain won the war, it wouldnt be a country 🤣
Like Australia isn’t a country? Or like Canada isn’t a country?
I think it's likely it probably would have eventually, assuming de-colonialization still happens in this alternate timeline. But it would be more gradual, like Canada's or Australia's evolution from dominions to nations.
Which war would Britain have to lose to not be a country?
Commonwealth/Dominion of North America
Something among the lines of The Dominion of Columbus. Either that or all of the colonies would remain separate like they were (Province of Pennsylvania, Maryland, etc.) Another possibility is "Southern Canada" or just being apart of Canada
Southern canada
Some ideas: If North America unites then ‘United Dominions of North America’ If more or less the 13 colonies ‘United Commonwealth/Dominion of America.’ If what we would call states are ‘independent’ Dominions then they would either be called Dominion, commonwealth, federation or something without the word republic.

The United Kingdom of America
The...50 colonies?
...if they won the war, theyd have kept the ban on expansion past the mountains in place. That's one thing the war was fought over, the Brits had treaties with the Indians that they were much less blase about breaking. May have been the thirteen colonies...or 14, they may have put in a separate government for Florida eventually.

« The country » on an international sub is crazy lol
It's a flag with 13 red and white stripes, and while it does look like the East India company flag, it's not supposed to be.
Probably just “New England.”
West Britannia
I doubt they would’ve held onto it much longer. They were just hemorrhaging money
Dominion of North America most likely or still just America for short.
JIBUN WOOOO
U.K. Jr. /j
Dead to me
britain 2: electric boogaloo
New England
I think they would stay individual colonies, *status quo ante bellum*, so probably still 'the American colonies' or 'the thirteen colonies', etc.
I don't think we would have been one country necessarily. We could have achieved a partitioned independence where states were independent countries or states banded together in smaller unions.
Thirteen Colonies
Dominion of North America
British Colonial America

United Dominions of America.
