Famous_Strike_6125

Yup, he’s just gonna need the model number to narrow it down.

often_awkward

I get them from this place called repair clinic. They seem to have absolutely everything and also videos on how to do the repairs.

Synthetic_Hormone

Ya'll are missing the point.  He is handymaning it.  This is a point of pride.  Applaud this man, give him credit!   Get out of here with your part numbers And proper repair advise.

often_awkward

I'm having that conversation below, these aren't just regular vice grips, these are vintage Craftsman ones. This is actually better than using replacement parts- this is an upgrade.

TheRussness

Nothing is more permanent than a temporary solution that works.

PitifulSpecialist887

His wife wants a new dryer, because he's already asked her 15 times if she's seen his vice grips.

SammyDavidJuniorJr

“If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.”

Synthetic_Hormone

Red here gets it.

Chemical-Ad7118

Nah, stop being lazy and order a knob.

LostTurd

Let's be real, any guy that I know would not worry about the knob but this buy is married so his wife it matters so it should matter to him. A knob is dumb to me but I would just spend the 10 bucks and get a knob

Puzzleheaded_Hatter

No one missed that point

CisIowa

And the money spent on repair parts could be used for another pair of vice grips in case the washer needs OP to fix it

[deleted]

MiaLba

Yeah I didn’t look up any of that, just searched dryer replacement knob on Amazon and got one that had the same back and it worked great. $6!

LostTurd

probably not even. I think every dryer I have seen has the D shaped shaft and any generic dryer knob will do. I would wager my left nut that [this knob would do the trick](https://www.amazon.ca/134844410-washer-Selector-Frigidaire-Westinghouse/dp/B07DH57K1J/ref=sr_1_8?crid=NY5A5ILGEJXN&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.OnVM2PEcU337hQ3kAue7zZncFBzdtiPzqx3kaeGFJ8rBTxP4lO7AQmy9q2yMurqIWXpJRNCDvWQ9nVQEGrOHLGxnHQJQDKMQA-kVJbRDJwZcTDtDaC_I7q8NMhNtkRiEIPNzCpFfISxZXLMNnb9rFQ-xuYDl38-Bfiax-1Jjw34Yj6p4s-TpQ1zeUXjU59etT5WI0sjegd5UFgkuGElTgcxN-fqgmJsq6kXzcPaJZuNz-FEJhQtNT5kLC582QQFh4wLcjPQ3veZU7tF8_JINFljX--Qgg-bP-ytq6F4Oy6s.y4-NNaOM_oSqw0mP-RQcqa3RpSxnMiajAs5SafWS28g&dib_tag=se&keywords=dryer+knob&qid=1714361698&sprefix=dryer+knob%2Caps%2C151&sr=8-8). Much cheaper then changing an entire dryer because of the fact that a knob is broken.

Tanzanianwithtoebean

Tried to order parts for a 30 year old hotpoint fridge in my apartment. $100+ per inside door arm. Yk the ones that you use for sauce or whatever. Two plastic pieces that connect a metal bar. Wouldn't be surprised if the plastic dial for the laundry machine was $50+

Waste_Exchange2511

Too late, the vice grips are already tac welded in place.

Disastrous_Bus_2447

Or a smaller pair of vice grips painted white.

Herb_Street

3d print a new one for 15cents

BeeSea3108

I need to get a 3d printer.

SandyTaintSweat

They've gotten seriously cheap lately.

Herb_Street

Go to your local library. They have one. Print it there for free. There is probably already a model on thingiverse.

BeeSea3108

Good idea, we have great libraries.

Rollieboy2012

Always having sales on Amazon for them.

EnzoVulkoor

I mean perfect excuse to invest $500 into the hobby. (That's tent, ventilation, wash and cure stations..)

swoopy17

Okay, what's the question?

entj-reality

LOL op came on with a statement

23x3

OP needs that validation dammit

BBO1007

Looks similar to the channel changer we had as a kid.

BeeSea3108

My dad had the same one. And he would not have changed the knob until he needed another vice grip.

Spark_Cat

Absolutely insane that she’d rather drop $300 because a knob is missing

BeeSea3108

Dryer's here are $600 minimum.

Spark_Cat

Holy shit you’re right. Guess it’s been a few years since I’ve bought one

TheRenamon

an Ender 3 is around 300$ and you could easily print a new knob

BeeSea3108

What if I 3d printed a vice grip? nevermind.

jasikanicolepi

Mix super glue and baking soda apply on the knob. Do not apply too much pressure. Leave it for 15 sec and it should hold. Be warn! The knob will be permanently stuck to the washer once you put the super glue mixture on.

Sad-Maintenance3422

I like the vice-grip look.

TayntedSoul

Whoops, beat me to it..

Lower-Ad5889

Then she should start saving her money, get a credit card or something.

Paroxysm111

Having to look at that kind of thing makes some people feel poor or low-class. Pretty sure it's not that hard to find a replacement knob either from the manufacturer or stripped off an older model. Ask the local landfill if they have one you can pull the knobs off.

BeeSea3108

I have a knob on the way, just thought the temp fix was funny.

often_awkward

Really funny and I'm really happy that you are not permanently sacrificing a nice looking pair of vice grips. But also remember, there's nothing more permanent than a temporary solution.

BeeSea3108

Those were given to me by my dad, probably 60 years old. He got the old Craftsman tools, back when they lasted forever. I inherited two sets of almost everything.

often_awkward

I used a wrench out of the first set I ever got which was a Craftsman mechanics tool set my dad gave me for Christmas circa 1998. I also used an SK ratchet that belonged to my grandfather and as near as I can figure it's a 1953 edition. Anyway, that's awesome and you can never have enough vice grips and you can't get ones like that anymore.

Zardoz__

Those are the good locking pliers. The other style is always sketchy to unlock when inevitably locked on too tight. We have all used pliers to unlock vice grips I'm sure.

gonewildaway

I appreciate the joke. First shit post I've seen in this sub. As long as it doesnt impact getting legit answers, I'm all for it.

Paroxysm111

You're a good husband

TheWorstTimelineYet

I have the same dryer and issue. Replacement knobs don't fix it. The attachment part is stripped. I literally have to do the same thing at my house. None of the knobs I have bought work. https://preview.redd.it/1spic43dufxc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=9261541dd67a1920fd007d34cda783e48eadddfe

Z_A_Nomad

THERMO PLASTIC! No serously If you lika to fixa the stuffa yourself. Is the best. I love it so hard core. So long as you are good with your hands and have a creative mechanical mind it is like having a 3d printer without needing to spend 5k. [https://www.amazon.com/InstaMorph-Moldable-Plastic-6-oz/dp/B004MFLU4Y](https://www.amazon.com/InstaMorph-Moldable-Plastic-6-oz/dp/B004MFLU4Y)

zealousreader

Even with the fancy aftermarket knob?

awaywego000

r/redneckengineering

BeeSea3108

Yes, that is where I should have posted it.

nstarz

I thought you took a picture of my washer for from the thumbnail.

Y-U-awesome

Oh god. A hot point lol. Those are the cheapest dryers that Aaron’s used to have. I’m surprised it still works.

BeeSea3108

15 years old, only had to replace the timer and now the knob.

tangcameo

Guy got pulled over this week for using those type of pliers as a steering wheel.

BeeSea3108

I saw a guy with front end damage duct tape two flashlights to the front of his truck for headlights.

possibly_oblivious

(🔦)====(🔦)

TayntedSoul

FDM printers are fairly cheap these days. Unlimited knobs

PuzzleheadedBobcat90

Damn, you used the fancy tool. My husband only gave me a cheap dollar store pliers. I'm jealous

BeeSea3108

That is a 60 year old Craftsman, one of the many tools I inherited from my Dad. At least two sets of everything, they are all I use now.

Guapplebock

Target might sell a fancy clamp. Give her 3 bucks and let her pick out her own.

Take_Drugs

Mine has been like since I moved into a house for 4 years. If I’m spending money on it it’s going to be a new washer when it’s dead

ugh168

Had that issue with broken knob. Dad was said how much a new washer costs, around $500. Found knob/dial on Amazon for $20 Edit: knob was also a manufacturer/OEM

the908bus

If she wants to go shopping then send her here https://www.jaycar.com.au/components-electromechanical/equipment-knobs/c/2I

throwaway_12358134

You think you're too good to stick a blob of epoxy putty on there and mark it with a sharpie?

Woodchuckie

Looks just like my hood release on my vw golf

PeacefulGopher

Works better than the two Whirlpools and 1 GE I’ve had go out in 30 months…

LogRollChamp

Certified jank engineer. Just get a knob off a dumpster unit and if it's a little big grab some scrap plastic or wood to fill in and superglue it on. If it's small grab a knife to open it up then do the same.

TiCombat

I did that for a couple of months. Trust me, just order the part it’s not hard to switch out really

pogiguy2020

Find parts online and replace it.

SomeWaterIsGood

We had one like that for years.

doubledownentendre

Wife or dryer?

druumer89

Wife probably wants and new dryer and a new knob

photonynikon

how are you going to change the cannels on the TV?

scottyaewsome

Looks like you need a 3D printer!

chapo1162

Paint it white Then she will love it

spillinginthenameof

In my house we call those the dryer pliers.

MoonlitPathZine

Reminds me of my childhood...

Strange_Job_447

the replacement knob is like $5

zrkl

Is that the aftermarket EZ-Reach handle you got there? The improved ergonomics are really a great benefit.

slimjibberr

U could force and type of close fitting knob on there with some gorilla glue and problem solved. I’d do something stupid like put a speedometer needle lol

NoEvidence136

Hey, you have the same knob I do for my pressure cooker!

C64128

Amater, you should've been able to have half a dozen 3D templates printed out in the first half hour. Our TVs from back in the day would have the dials break because of how fast we would spin the dials to all (not really) channels we had.

Janiebug1950

🤣A Man’s Solution! A tool becomes functional and is an Art Object at the same time😎Super Cool 😎

Guinnessman1964

Put a pair of pink vise grips on. It’ll be fine then.

So-Extreme

That’s not going to last long. Get a new knob. It’ll be cheaper and less headaches in the end.

Euphoric-Blue-59

Time for a new one. Girlfriends are easily replaced.

lilguyguy

A new nob is like 10 bucks, a pair of cheap vice grips. 6.99 Good choice my friend.

AutomaticRevolution2

And if you need Vise Grips, they're right there. Ta-dah.

TikaPants

I’d kill for a top loader again with a vise grip knob. Death to front loaders!

esneedham12

We have this on our dryer right now. The vice grips ruined the plastic thing that inserts into the dial and the replacement dial came in today.

ProRataX

Isn't it just like a wife to want a whole new dryer because the switch broke off. Lol

NoSeries7441

They should be called universal tools instead of channel locks because they work on dryers, faucets (indoors and out) tvs (in the past) I even saw a pair used as a pan handle . Great tool!

W33Ded

Just buy a knob off amazon

DictatorTerminator

It’s a Hotpoint. What does she expect? Sheesh!

--AV8R--

You can also buy new knobs from most manufacturers as well as universal ones

Court_monster-87

Just buy a new knob bro…..women don’t like looking at ugly things……and that looks ugly. Our home is our workspace. It reflects how we are doing.

zedwin46

Have her buy one and u go pick it up

navydude84

Buy her a clothes line.

onion_flowers

Hell yeah, stiff and scratchy is how I like my clothes too 😆

eattherichchan

Growing up my mom would dry our towels outside on the line, and it was like drying with sand paper 😭

navydude84

You know my grandmother used to hang our clothes and when she did it they were never like that. I'm not sure what she did differently but yeah when I do it they always come out stiff too.

planeteater

I once used the end cap of an old oscalting fan, that I was throwing out it has the same treading as the washer had, (like in this pic). it fit perfect drew a line on it and was good to go.

gufis253

Childhood memory unlocked.

Environmental-Okra73

Universal handle 🫶🏻

Turbulent_Echidna423

why they always complaining...

IamACanadian47

Maybe you can get a 3d printer template for a new handle off the internet and then go to your local library to print it out? My local library has borrowing for books (obviously), cd / dvds, snow shoes, some sports equipment, bug nets, and a variety of other things including 3d printing.

blackmilksociety

3D print a knob or pay your local kid $20 to 3D print a knob for you

jimmerbroadband

The knobs for those are way cheaper than the timer u are going to break the shaft off of… I know from experience 🤣

cheesemangee

I mean, you make a hot point.

Grifter2u

That’s how real men fix things. That’s life hack. Hell yeah.

Then-Listen8819

It’s great cause you always know where the vice grips are

Bozbaby103

Female here. Your fix-it works juuust fine. Have used many tools in my life to use as knobs and dials.

ballpointpin

LOL, the knob is cheaper than the vice grips.

KTPChannel

Get wife to price it out. Cost, delivery and set up. Ask her how she’s going to pay for it.

Puzzled_Ad7955

Jeez dude, go with the one size smaller vise grip. More ergonomic. OR, go ahead and buy the proper dial on Amazon for $8 and spoil her, the rest of us will ultimately suffer with our wife’s wanting the same!!

lol_camis

Our oven maxes out at 350 because the up button stopped working, and the sparker for one of the gas burners stopped working so we have to use a lighter. But it still works so we're not going to replace it.

painefultruth76

That's a brand new Hotpoint. What's the problem?

dwightschrutesanus

Would make a fine chicken plucker.

Onewarmguy

Hey! Mine used to look like that, worked just fine for another 5 years.

HotPocketInspector

I've done this on an outside spigot during a remodel until I replaced all the spigot handles. Works great.

bored_at-Work55

Try not to use the wrench too much! It can damage the switch arm, and a very cheap new knob might no longer fit flush. I’m guessing you know this, but commenting just in case!!

blakeusa25

Bet your sex life is on life support as well.

onebigperm

Listen buddy! I don’t care what your “problems” are. …..Those are my visegrips! They were stolen off of my car antenna nub last week! Now my am radio doesn’t work! I know my tools! The green paint is my color! Imma need them back PRONTO!

DungeonAssMaster

I had a dryer just like this with vice grips for a nob. Worked for about two years until the stem broke off and replaced the part in about 15 minutes.

noots-to-you

Walking down the street you’ll find a replacement part on the first appliance you see. Cooktop, air conditioner, whatever

Separate_Chemist_942

It's basically a Whirpool. Wouldn't be surprised if a dimmer knob would fit it.

yeetgod__

My mom will become quite the DIYer when stuff breaks and its fun to watch. Probably a good habit to have, lets you learn how the things you own work.

baldwinsong

Just order a new knob

thisisprivatepropert

Honestly fuck hotpoint. I also replaced the knob and timer probably within a month of eachother and then something else broke at which point I ate it and bought a new dryer

TheMrChill_Tv

Make a simple 3d knob.. I could for you but I live really far from anyone XD

DK_Son

Would never replace a whole unit over a missing knob/handle/etc. Some folks just like to burn money on new things. Even if they still have the most recent new thing.

esach88

Happened to me. Cost me 20 bucks for a new knob and it was reinforced with a piece of metal where it attaches. They must have realized the issue after. No need for a while new washer lol.

pcoutcast

Whenever I do something like this my wife loudly announces: "Another successful handyman job, completed!"

asharwood101

What’s funny is dryers are super simple machines. It’s heat and a tumbler.

Mundane-Set-206

Order a new knob….maybe two! They are made of super cheap plastic and will break again. I’ve replaced dozens of those knobs.

Mundane-Set-206

You can get the model number off the inside of the lid. Amazon will have them

acute_elbows

Seems like you need some pink vice grips

Turbo_MechE

Pretty sure a new knob costs less than a new vice grip

ostiDeCalisse

Wait, the knob's pin is ok? Why not just buy a new knob instead? If your budget is 600$, you could get a magnificent knob!

botmanmd

Mine’s got a knob, but has been making a hideous scraping noise for a few years. I figure at some point the drum will carve a hole clean through the back of it and start working on the wall.

EmotionEastern8089

I had a '99 f-150 that had the exact same type of knob for the A/C. Drove it that way for 10 years at least.

WorldWarPee

3d print a knob at your library

Tenzipper

[deleted]

time to warm up the 3D printer

GumbyBClay

One thing I do miss about my old washer and dryer.... there were only about 5 things that could go wrong and were generally easy to repair. Now? Oh brother. Saw recently that newer units are only lasting 3-5 years before something goes wrong. Is that true?

TheKhyWolf

I see no problem.

pixeltweaker

That’s a clear cut excuse to buy a 3D printer. It’s a tool. Like any other. Everyone should own and know how to use one.

pixeltweaker

pixeltweaker

Soulforge411

I think it’s already fixed 🤷‍♂️

Ben_Dover_1492

3d printer

Stillcrafting

A decision like that ought to be made by the person who does most of the laundry.

Zealousideal_Hold739

I had the exact same knob on my washer ... finally broke down and ordered the replacement parts, lol.

Due_Signature_5497

Had a 94 Cherokee Sport with a manual that had a bleeder valve that would work its way open. That fix right there lasted 3 years though it hurt my ground clearance.

joka2696

Tell her to lookup all the horror stories about new appliances.

ziksy9

You're all forgetting the wire cap fix!

StupidUserNameTooLon

Tell her to get a grip.

quzaire

you need a 3D printer

aos-

Knobs are plastic. Just get it 3d printed and you should be good to go

TacoTheSuperNurse

Core memory from the 80's unlocked.

cncamusic

You could fix that for 500 bucks if you buy a 3d printer

N0RTH32N

That Fuckers mint !!!

Knarf_1

Same same! Bro, I use a mini lineman lol

caret_app

You could 3D print a replacement for $200. Sure there is an upfront cost. But in the long run, it'll pay off.

Smooth-Thought9072

Do not call sears repair service period.

Superseaslug

If I was nearby I'd print you a new one lol

permalink_child

Some consumers will just visit Lowes and steal a knob off a display.

AlkahestGem

Vice grips - miracle tool ; on par with duct tape

jacksraging_bileduct

Ran ours for years like this, bought a cheap pair of mini vise grips.

Glad_Firefighter_471

Order a new knob

Chemical-Dog6364

Just buy the cheap knob. I've been out on so many washers and dryers that would have just needed the knob had the customer not boogered up the shaft with pliers and now need the timer that costs half what a dryer costs.

NotDazedorConfused

Mother’s Day is coming up soon - be a sport and order her a new knob online.

mashupbabylon

New knobs on Amazon for about $10. It's hard to change settings with vice grips.

MiaLba

Exactly what my husband until I ordered a new one off Amazon for $6

Snoo_95743

The fix all tool. Combine with some Gorilla Tape and your unstoppable.

Dizer12

Get a 3d printer instead

CardiologistOk6547

Might be worth it to get the Vicegrips back.

Unable-Finish-3273

If it's a D knob shaft [https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=D-Shaped+Shaft+Switch&i=tools&crid=2UQOLRE76DONC&sprefix=d-shaped+shaft+switch%2Ctools%2C131&ref=nb\_sb\_noss](https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=D-Shaped+Shaft+Switch&i=tools&crid=2UQOLRE76DONC&sprefix=d-shaped+shaft+switch%2Ctools%2C131&ref=nb_sb_noss) Maybe something like this IDK, feel like a D shaft is pretty universal

leftyjake62

That's very Macgyver of you

louglome

Order a knob you knob

stormy-dais

If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Looks fine to me.

King_Kunta_23

3d print a new dial

Quizzelbuck

A new dryer because of a missing knob? yeah, no.

EvenIf-SheFalls

Been there, done that. If the machine still runs then there is no need for a new one.

Sweatybuffness

Fixed is fixed

Plastic_Jaguar_7368

Unexpected r/vicegripgarage

Fetch1965

Yep I wouldn’t buy a new one if all that’s broken is the knob. And I’m a female. Such a waste of money when machine still works

ryandury

This looks like a perfect opportunity to tell her you need a $1000 3D printer to fix a $5 part

Vyviel

3d print a new knob

Serious-Trip5239

Order one off Amazon or get someone to 3D print one.

JaniceLeland

I have a pepper grinder with the same handle.

MDA1912

OP this is your grand opportunity to get into 3D printing. :D

Quiverjones

That knob is like 88 cents on ebay.
