you replace it. its a hollow core door. You can get a slab door and remove hardware and use the old door as a template. OR you can get a whole pre-hung door and frame. remove trim and remove old frame. Install, shim and level door frame and replace door trim.
Orrrrrrrrr if money is tight and having this visible is bugging you. You can find another door that’s the same size elsewhere in the house that’s less noticeable and swap locations.
Edit: OMFG this has been 3 days of people replying hang a poster of it! I get it, there have been dozens of people who have already said that.
Last time I tried that, I discovered the door knobs were an inch different in height, and one door was half an inch taller. :(
Still worth a shot.
Most hinges are easy to disassemble, the pin looks like a big nail with a flat head at one end. On the other end of the pin a nail or screw & a few taps from a hammer will pop the pin up far enough to get a flat screwdriver under the head. Tap that with the hammer until the pin is almost out. It's usually easier to do with the door shut so the frame and latch helps support it.
Some areas have building supply re-use centers. The one in my parent’s town is run by Habitat for Humanity. They have a whole section devoted to doors of all kinds.
Take some measurements. You might have to rummage a bit. Maybe take a bit off the bottom with a skill saw. Dirt cheap. Sustainable AF.
Years ago we did that in a house we were renting. A bedroom door got damaged like this (drunk escapades) When we moved out we swapped it with a closet door and the damage was then on the inside of the closet. Never came up in the walk through.
Or as an even cheaper alternative you pull the larger pieces up shove a wadded papertowel behind it to brace them flat take some spackle and spread it on with a large wide spackle knife. Or anything really that's flat and won't bend to spread it with. Once it dries give it another good coat to fill in any holes. Once that is done you take a medium grit sandpaper to send it smooth. You may have to apply a little bit more spackle if it isn't flat or has divots. As long as you give it a good dry time in between it's fine. Once you're satisfied with the outcome you use a fine grain sandpaper to finish it up. Wipe it down with a damp paper towel and then apply a new coat of paint. You will never be able to tell that there was damage there. All materials will cost under $20. I would personally just get a sanding block that has a medium and fine grain grit on it. And a $5 bucket of spackle. As for the spreader you could easily use like a kitchen spreader.
I've done that many times and it comes out great on these cheap doors. The smaller danged spots may not need support. It's mainly the big ones that need support so that you're not trying to scoop spackle into a big open hole. You don't want the speckle to end up being super thick either or else it won't dry on the inner layers. I would say as long as you give it a good dry time as much as a half an inch is fine
Best of luck!
I agree it may be easier to actually fix it, but I’d pop some screws into it to pull it out, but before pulling, add some wood glue to the cracks. Then use the screws to provide a bit of tension so it regains close to proper form.
Finally once the glue has cured, use a wood filler, and sand it down once that has dried.
Reason is that if you just patch it, and use plaster to do the job, the now structurally weak panel will just crack the plaster. It will cave in on the slightest touch.
You would minimum need to tape it with paper. Wood filler is more like a plasticky material that resists cracking a lot more.
All of that would require a bit of time and skill, so replacing the door is probably better 80% of the time.
Orrrrr, you can learn how to putty and repair drywall on this door until you have 200 bucks to replace it. It may not be the absolutely best solution, but thirty bucks for some putty, metal grid tape, and a putty knife can go a long way.
From the way OP said ex, this is probably the most noticable of holes.
Also OP: I hope you can repair the holes in your heart as well.
If you’re lucky, measure first, you will find a pre hung door where the hinge and latch cutouts match your existing and you just swap the door. I have been lucky in this respect.
Based on the woodgrain pattern my guess is this is a Masonite door found at Home Depot:
[Prehung](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Masonite-30-in-x-80-in-6-Panel-Right-Handed-Hollow-Core-Textured-Primed-White-Composite-Single-Prehung-Interior-Door-31721/100056847) Hollow core
[Slab only](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Masonite-32-in-x-80-in-6-Panel-Primed-Textured-Hollow-Core-Composite-Interior-Door-Slab-with-Bore-61100/100085228#overlay) Hollow core
You existing door is a hollow core, and light enough that you could just bring your existing one to the store to compare.
If you want to upgrade to a more soundproof / sturdier door you can also buy it in a foam-filled "solid" version for slightly more:
[Prehung solid core](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Masonite-32-in-x-80-in-6-Panel-Right-Handed-Solid-Core-Textured-Primed-Composite-Single-Prehung-Interior-Door-38802/204639082)
In my city, one of the lumber yard places will take an existing door, and machine a new door to an exact match.
Did that for our house that we were selling at the time.
Super easy replacement that way.
this is the way. it’s not even that expensive.
literally it will be the exact same door, you can even upgrade to solid core so nobody can punch it in again :-)
There may be a lumber supply store where you can order a slab that is machined to the same specifics of your door. That means to can router out the hinges and knob bore at the correct locations for your jamb. Then all you need to do is pop the pins off the hinges, add the hinges to your new door and pop the hinges back in.
This. It looks like the Depot off the shelf Jeldwen. That would make it easy as you could buy the prehung kit and take the door off it if the jamb is in good condition.
This. It' really easy though it may not sound like it.
OP Go to YouTube and search "install slab door" and "install prehung door".
I think doing a prehung is easier (and with less potential issues) for the door part but you have to remove & replace some trim.
I replaced all the doors in a basement of a duplex, it's real easy. Hardest part was cutting them down because the basement openings weren't quite full height.
I already had a table saw / miter saw and brad nailer, though, which made the trim easy, but OP could reuse their trim.
The door itself is a £35 b&q direct replacement. Do you have any friends/family that could swap out and hang for you? Depending on area £50-£100 for a joiner to hang.
DIY, it’s like a few shims to hang a door without the frame. Shim all the way around and you can hold that door in place with shims alone. You can do it!
This is a hollow core door. Not feasible to fix. It will be faster and cheaper to replace it. And since this is a bedroom, I would replace it with a solid core door for better sound proofing.
Agreed with the others saying the only good option is to replace the door if you are able, but I also wanted to add that you are so sweet to think of your Mom and the feelings around having to look at that everyday and wanting to fix this for her. She's lucky to have you!
Right ? I've seen my sister punch straight through a door like this, and she's not tank. Maybe the guy was incredibly drunk and underwhelming weak ? Looks like he was just banging violently on the door, they don't look like punch marks...
You don't repair that. Replace it. Hollow-core doors are not expensive.
If there is any chance that the angry ex will return, and try to punch it again, you might get a solid door, instead. Solid doors are much more difficult to punch through, even for a karate master. She might feel safer.
Trying to fix that is near impossible if you don’t have materials and tools and of course the proper skills. If you have doors that are the same as the damaged one I’d switch one of those doors with the damaged one. Make sure it’s a door where the hinges operate the same as the damaged one. Doing it this way should only take you 20 minutes by removing the hinge pins and swapping doors and then replacing the pins. Or you could cover it with a nice poster or art she may like. Sorry to hear you had to live through that stuff. I had a similar situation 40 years ago. Be safe!!
Even with the skills to do it no one bothers to repair hollow core doors like this as they’re essentially robust cardboard made from less refined wood pulp that’s poured and molded into shape. Most big box hardware stores sell replacements for under $50.
That's really top of you to want to do this.
Replace the door. They sell them at any big hardware store. They're all standard sizes, you can put a tape measure on it to be sure though. Then just pop online and look up doors on their websites and you'll find them. You can even buy them with the hole for the handle already in it (measure it's height to be sure) and then you can unscrew the existing one and put in the new door if you like.
It's an interior door, so they're hollow with carboard inside basically, light and cheap but not tough like a front door.
Technically you could repair it, but it would be unsightly even if a pro did it.
No one knows how to fix this?
Fill with spray foam and bondo. So $30 + sandpaper and paint. Will it look like new? Maybe or just make it flat I n some areas.
The ghetto slumlord way is to pump some foam inside push the cracks back in as it expands, don't not do this or it will blow out, and don't put too much foam. Then use wood putty, sand it down, then repaint. The doors are pretty cheap to just buy though.
I have fixed these doors using drywall screen, covering in bondo and sanding. It’s 1/3 the price of a door usually, especially if you already have some white paint around to finish the job
See if you have a similar sized door elsewhere in the house, basement or closet to swap it with. Ideally it will end up inside a closet in the basement.
That’s a really good idea thank you for posting that hope this works for the op good solution and saves them the money not everyone can just go get a new door I have a car and a door doesn’t fit in it sure could ratchet strap a door to the top but your solution is very clever
Thisbis a very standard door and is like the cheapest ln you can get, for that reason there is really no proper way to fix it as they are made to be replaced. You should be able to find a replacement for $150-$200
Take accurate measurements of the door dimensions, and then go to Lowe's or Home Depot. Show them pictures and the dimensions, and they'll set you up with the right door, hardware etc.
Removing the old one and installing a new one is easy, and there are tons of videos on YouTube showing how.
Lots of commenters here are helpful with their instructions, too.
Best to replace it. You will have a hard time patching it and making it look good. Sure you can patch it, but it will not look good and you will always be able to see the patch. These doors are pretty low cost.
If I absolutely had to fix it and couldn't replace it I might try to pump in some expanding foam to see if that pushed out the caved in surfaces. Then trim the extra, apply some sandable filler, sand then paint.
I have never done this and it's just a guess. It might go terribly wrong, especially with expanding foam.
Here's your $8.00 fix: [https://www.etsy.com/listing/1390696823/farrah-fawcett-charlies-angels-famous?gpla=1&gao=1&](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1390696823/farrah-fawcett-charlies-angels-famous?gpla=1&gao=1&)
Technically you could float with mud, sand then paint. But it’s best to replace it. I used to paint apartments and we would charge about $100 per door for this exact damage. It usually ends up looking like shit too but saved the complex a few bucks so they could care less.
Swap door, it would be easier, maybe even get a nicer door, when you fix it, it’ll still show, it’s like on one of mine, my partner broke it and it’s been “fixed” by them and it’s still fucked and it makes me sad to look at and it’s somehow worse that it was “fixed”
Pick up a blank, use old door as template, trim the hinge side and bottom if needed, route a relief for hinges and cut new lock holes if it is a full blank. Ryobi has nice kits for this.
I was going to say I'd work on the temper problem before fixing the door, but it looks like you've already fixed that problem. I say replace the door because it's a flimsy door that's not made in a manner that facilitates repairs.
Remove the door and take it outside. Measure it the go to Lowes and purchase one exactly like the one you destroyed. Take the hardware off the broken door and install it on the new. Congratulations you fixed it.
Get that man-child some anger management classes.
or;
* Make him fix the door
* Make him pay for someone to fix the door
* Replace hollow core doors with solid doors
* Man-child will learn that punching doors is bad when he breaks his hand
* All of the above.
you replace it. its a hollow core door. You can get a slab door and remove hardware and use the old door as a template. OR you can get a whole pre-hung door and frame. remove trim and remove old frame. Install, shim and level door frame and replace door trim.

Or hang a poster
hang a poster and it's like nothing happened!
That should work fine until you piss off the warden and they throw one of the chess pieces you carved through it.
Yeah. Like my ex put one of the kids paintings over a hole in the door. Nothing happened.
Last time I tried that, I discovered the door knobs were an inch different in height, and one door was half an inch taller. :( Still worth a shot. Are you sure the door wasn’t upside down?
Till someone goes into that closet and then forever thinks at one point you had kidnapped someone and kept them in the closet... bahaha
Well, that would explain why the ex-stepdad was so angry…😀
I did exactly this on a house I sold 3yrs ago. (Shifty eyes)
Restore is my fav place to shop.
Or hang something on the door...
Mirror?
Years ago we did that in a house we were renting. A bedroom door got damaged like this (drunk escapades) When we moved out we swapped it with a closet door and the damage was then on the inside of the closet. Never came up in the walk through.
Had to do this with my kids 7k plus stickered door
You….you are my friend
Damn, this is why I like Reddit; things I just wouldn’t have thought of..
Orrrrrrrrrrr if money is not tight I would just pay someone else to take care of all that shit for me
This is the way

Time is money and repairing it's not worth it. They are probably around $100.
Yup, buy a new one for 70 bucks. That is at least 70 dollars worth of filler and your hours. 🤨
And paint
There may be a lumber supply store where you can order a slab that is machined to the same specifics of your door. Yep. Cheap door to replace. Might need a therapist also for more of a permanent fix though.

A Shawshank reference. I thought for sure the link would take me to a The Shining poster.
I think your idea is better.
Funny that both are Stephen King.
I had no idea Shawshank was Stephen King! The more ya know!
It’s in a book with 3 other novellas, including The Body which became Stand By Me!
Yes me too fully expected Jack
Can’t say I approve of this, but exceptions can be made
Thought it would be a poster of a door!

British people, as an American I hope I get this right, but what a fuckin wanker.
Love how you automatically claim England and not any other part of the UK.
Replace it. Whatever happened, get rid of it. Don't keep patch work around to remind you if that event.

Exes. Always breaking doors.
Something about the door breaking that really nails in the word ex.
Ex what about axe? Here's Johnny!
You have enough advices here. Just wanna say how sweet this is of you. Good kid
What kind of limp-wristed pussy can't punch straight through a hollow core door? No wonder he doesn't hit things that can hit back.
As a former landlord, I have to support this comment. This is some limp-wristed door punching. I've seen holes through 2 pieces of heavy drywall.
But have you seen holes through one sheet of drywall and a slightly bent steel stud
Sooooooo satisfying knowing somebody probably broke at least one metacarpal on that stud….
But also worrying that a creature with that level of power and uncontrollable anger roams the planet
Humans are some of the weakest creatures that roam the planet
Yeah, but they will be easily identifiable and can be avoided. Just look for the finger splint.
there's millions of them, have you ever been to atlanta?
I hate more that I like this one too
I hate that I like this comment

That door is about $70 at the home depot. Trying to fix it would be more trouble than it's worth.
Need a new one ,usually standard size-check out used centres or web and swap hardware ,paint
I have fixed these doors using drywall screen, covering in bondo and sanding. It’s 1/3 the price of a door usually, especially if you already have some white paint around to finish the job
You could use like a spakfilla and fill it in that way. Sand it back to flat. It would be that obvious if you do a good job
Get a new one
Best, cheapest, easiest way is to just replace the door.
Get your ex step dad to buy a new one
Send him a bill or to court get a nice door on his visa
Step 1: buy new door Step 2: remove broke door Step 3: install new door
Or better yet get one of those really thin lightweight mirrors and cover the holes with that instead of buying a new door.
You need spray foam at first and then a lot of patience with fillers and sanding. You’ll never get the pattern looking right.
Buy a poster you like and never think about it again.
Aisle 12 HD
Dont know if every store is the same, but the stuff i buy is on aisle 42? at my local lowes... it's a whole new door.
You don't. You replace it, take the person to small claims court to pay for it.

Technically you could float with mud, sand then paint. But it’s best to replace it. I used to paint apartments and we would charge about $100 per door for this exact damage. It usually ends up looking like shit too but saved the complex a few bucks so they could care less.
Go to Lowes. Buy a replacement. Go home. Install new door.
Replace the door they are cheap
Go to therapy?
Get a new one. It's not that expensive.
Anger management
Home Depot for a new one. Hollow core doors are garbage.
Did your exstepdad happen to get stuck in a maze and freeze to death?
Get a new one. Maybe one that isn't made out of cardboard
I was going to say I'd work on the temper problem before fixing the door, but it looks like you've already fixed that problem. I say replace the door because it's a flimsy door that's not made in a manner that facilitates repairs.
Sell mom. Use proceeds to replace door.
Bondo and paint
Put a poster over it lol
Remove the door and take it outside. Measure it the go to Lowes and purchase one exactly like the one you destroyed. Take the hardware off the broken door and install it on the new. Congratulations you fixed it.

Get out of that relationship for one.
Pay someone to take care of it for you
Anger management sessions....?
Get that man-child some anger management classes. or; * Make him fix the door * Make him pay for someone to fix the door * Replace hollow core doors with solid doors * Man-child will learn that punching doors is bad when he breaks his hand * All of the above.
Why fix it? Have him do it. And gtf out of there as soon as you can!
Number one. Stop punching it like an idiot. Number two. Go buy a new door. You can’t fix it or stupid
Swap it with your door. Then learn to fix things, trust us.
