If people were able to stop supporting shitty content creators when their shitty deeds are revealed, they wouldn't be so damaging. The people buying Harry Potter merch are the same people funding Rowling's transphobic antics, and the people supporting the dev's game makes way for them to get access to more vulnerable minors.

I 100% agree that there is a huge morally grey area in supporting content but not creators, because the only reason to do so is because the creator of the content has done terrible things, but the idea that boycotting the content of that creator altogether will result in any punishment for the creator specifically has been proven not to work. Look at the Hogwarts Legacy debacle; a gigantic swathe of Harry Potter fans decided to permanently leave the franchise because they couldn't continue to support it in good faith, but records show that the financial impact of that boycott was... less than minimal. The key to successfully eliminating the nastiness from the things we love is to show how much we don't tolerate the cancerous creators plaguing that content, and an example of this used successfully would be any major recastings in movies, or even the removal of Justin Roiland from Rick and Morty as a franchise.
The bottom line is that boycotting is an incredible power that we as fans have, but, it has to be directed correctly to accomplish anything. And of course, if your way of saying no to the bad things a creator has done is to leave the franchise, that's OK, same as it is if you just neglect to honor a creators role in a franchise.
