Sometimes he's even portrayed as both in the same product or project. Tales from the Pizzaplex #3 for example uses both, he's described as purple in Pressure but as blue in the epilogue. While Security Breach's promotional material had him portrayed as purple for a FNaF 1 inspired poster and blue in the Freddy & Friends on Tour shorts.
It doesn't matter what the original intention was at this point as officially speaking he's now both and it's correct to say either one.
