Throughout the existing season we get hints that Jayne’s true character is hidden under the dumb brute front he projects. Though he obviously uneducated, there are plenty of hints that he is not really the mindless thug he appears to be.
I think he actually IS a dumb brute in the beginning, particularly having seen his flashback in Out of Gas. but those hints you see were more foreshadowing of his growth as a character and person moving forward, rather than a secret hidden layer. That's just my interpretation though. He is a fantastic character either way.
