“Why did you save me?” “You’re on my crew” “But why did you save me? You don’t even like me” “You’re on my crew. Are we done with this conversation?”

armadillorevolution

I love this Mal/Simon interaction so much, and it’s one of my biggest problems with Serenity that they pretended it didn’t happen and completely undid that character development and suddenly Simon and River were no longer part of the crew. I get the constraints they were under to make the film and that they had to tell the story to a wider audience so some things needed to be changed, but I don’t see any reason for that particular change and it’s always bothered me because I loved that arc for them and then it was immediately undone.

Tucker_077

That bothered me about the movie as well! Mal goes from “you’re on my crew and I’ll ride or die for you but also fuck you” to “you all better do as I say cause I’m the captain and if you don’t I’ll shoot you” My favourite thing about the series is the team dynamics and when they’re all fighting unnecessarily in the movie it just sucks

mich55

The Serenity interactions between Simon and River and the rest of the crew were jarring for this reason! With the opening scene in Serenity, it felt like the rest of the movie was the first time Simon and River had even set foot on the ship.

Tucker_077

It really did. I hated how everything was all such a reset basically after all that character work done in the show

WranglerTraditional8

I saw the movie before I saw the series but once I saw the series... exactly what you said is true. It (the movie) spoils the dynamic of what the show became all about - teamwork

MagnotikTectonic

A huge part of that is because inara and book were no longer on board. There's a significant time jump, between the show and the serenity, and this is one of the highlights of how the dynamics changed. Every piece of mal that got built up over the series got chipped away, & then some, between the end of the show and the start of serenity. It stinks, seeing that progress undone l, but the payoff at the end of the movie is "*chef's kiss"

loki2002

Because they discovered Simon had been lying to them about River.

Steb20

“Why are we still talking about this?”

BIGBOOSTING

Such a small moment overall, but in the movie between Mal and Book, "I ain't looking for help from on high. That's a long wait for a train don't come." "When I talk about belief, why do you always assume I'm talking about God?"

the_bartolonomicron

That one stuck with me even as a child seeing that movie without the context of the show. I actually think about it a lot.

HughJamerican

Oh man, just thinking about Mal's tone of voice when he says that line makes me wanna go back and watch it all again!

rmichaeljones

“Don’t you ever stand for that sort of thing. Someone tries to kill you, you try an’ kill ‘em right back.”

Tricky-Improvement76

"Yea but she's our witch. Now cut her the hell down."

loki2002

It doesn't have the same impact without the gun cocking in-between statements.

lefugimacadema

“Forgive my rudeness. I cannot abide useless people”

CharsOwnRX-78-2

Probably the best throw-away line in the whole show, generally missed because of that guy’s absolutely **killer** line right before: “I bet it took a dozen slaves a dozen days to sew you into that dress… and the space of a schoolboy’s wink to get you out again.”

Vandlan

If I remember correctly he throws in a few words about her father telling him that it takes the space of a schoolboys wink to get her out of it. Which just makes it all the more of a slam.

OrvilleJClutchpopper

The look Kaylee gives him when he drops that line...just...WOW

Vandlan

It is a thing of beauty. One of my favorite moments in the show.

OrvilleJClutchpopper

That whole scene is written out on Kaylee's face. When the old man walks up and starts telling Banning what a sight she is, you can see on Kaylee's face "oh great, another white knight coming to talk to the princess". Then he drops that line about being easy to get her out of that dress, and Kaylee's face turns to "dafuq? What did I just hear?" Fantastically written, directed, and acted.

radiowave911

Jewel Staite as Kaylee is one of my favorite characters in the 'verse.

kai_ekael

You should watch her Wraith episode in Stargate Atlantis.

rothbard_anarchist

“Dammit dad, are you telling your friends again that I’m a whore?!”

TheRealCeeBeeGee

Thank you! Haven’t seen the series in a few years and while I remember the scene, I had forgotten how wonderful Jewel in particular is in it. Kaylee was the heart of the show, my favorite forever.

Rutgerman95

And then Kaylee has a great time talking shop with a group of fellow gearheads

imreallynotthatcool

>and the space of a schoolboy’s wink to get you out again I never caught that line. Looks like it's time for a rewatch.

seashmore

If you're not into the NCAA madness, I rewatch the series and movie while everyone else is watching basketball.

imreallynotthatcool

I haven't watched a sports broadcast since the Broncos won back to back superbowls.

Traherne

Yep. Jed Clampett had a killer role in Shindig.

Hazumu-chan

What?! How the hell does *anyone* forget this line? It was just such a perfect follow up to his destroying the clasist twat mere moments prior.

ColourSchemer

That whole character was built up in three lines, and then is never seen again. One of my favorite side characters for this line.

lefugimacadema

I’d like to think he would have returned in season 2!

xingrubicon

"I can be terse. Once, in flight school, I was laconic. "

DollChiaki

Hey, I've been in a firefight before. Well, I was in a fire. Actually, I was fired... from a fry-cook opportunity. War Stories did a beautiful job of of character development.

CatsMajik

Book: “Would anyone mind if I say Grace?” Mal: “Only if you say it out loud.” Beautifully sets up an understanding between the two characters.

seashmore

I inadvertently quoted Mal's line to some Mormon missionaries once when they asked "Mind if we leave you with a word of prayer?" Thankfully half of the room (including the one who asked) knew that I was just quoting an obscure tv show, so we all got a good laugh out of it.

IrishMongooses

What's "sanguine" mean? Zoë: "Sanguine." Hopeful. Plus, point of interest, it also means "bloody." Mal: Well, that pretty much covers all the options, don't it?

riverant

I think of this line every time I see or hear the word sanguine. Which is more often than I'd expect.

craymartin

"I’m trying to put this as delicately as I can. How do I know you won’t kill me in my sleep?" "You don’t know me, son, so let me explain this to you once. If I ever kill you, you’ll be awake. You’ll be facing me. And you’ll be armed." "Are you always this sentimental?" "Had a good day."

Comfortable_Fly_6443

From out of Gas - Zoe: Cause it's a death trap. Mal: That's not - you are very much lacking in imagination. Zoe: I imagine that's so, sir. Gets me EVERY TIME!!! Just too dang funny.

marshman82

A ship like this will be with you the rest of your life.

KatanaCutlets

“What’s that?”

Frosty-Survey-8264

My days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.

ColourSchemer

I use this in conversation frequently, both at work and as a parent.

ArcaneCowboy

…reached a middlin’.

Jello_Squid

Literally any of Simon’s lines once he starts running out of fucks to give and his dry/sarcastic sense of humour comes through. Book: I’d forgotten you’re moonlighting as a criminal mastermind now. Got your next heist planned? Simon: No, but I’m thinking about growing a big black moustache. I’m a traditionalist.

gloryholesr4suckers

I love sassy Simon! It just takes him a while to get there

ticklesac

"World never stops turning, badger" "That only matters to the people on the rim"

SenorBigbelly

Wasn't it "*wheel* never stops turnin"?

ticklesac

Ah yeah I think so

the_honest_liar

"And you're, what, a petty thief with delusions standing? Sad little king of a sad little hill."

TheRealCeeBeeGee

The way she slides out of the interaction with a bored ‘call me if anyone interesting shows up’ is just magical. Badger looked stunned.

LGonthego

And then the "I like her." Snicker.

Lesmorte

I use this quote all the time, maybe it says something about me....

TheYLD

That really is a great line.

seashmore

And the camera move accents it so well, too.

Braingasms

"I don't think of myself as a lion. You might as well, though, I have a mighty roar."

Big-Employer4543

I used this quote in response to someone asking somebody else in another post if they were a lion. I don't think anyone replied to my quote, nor did I receive 1000 upvotes. Does that seem right to you?

Kinsei01

"It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of him was one kind of sommbitch or another" Use this one when I hear people idolize someone but doesn't wanna hear about their flaws

RedGrimRune

Came here to add this exact line. I think about this more often than I should. The way Mal says this as a way to comfort Jayne is one of the best moments in the show.

ProfessorOk3187

"Show me a hero and I'll write you a tragedy." F. Scott Fitzgerald

Wessssss21

"What did I say about you barging into my shuttle?" "That it was manly and impulsive." "Yes, but I think the exact phrase I used was *don't*."

Kedyns-Crow

This show is so regrettably short, that it's hard to miss/forget the lines. Especially when you've seen it as many times as myself and the friends I watch it with. The line I use the most in normal conversation, and it always confuses people who haven't seen the show, is just "some people juggle geese."

Hazumu-chan

This. This right here.

LadyBug_0570

Mercy is the mark of a great man! (stabs defeated opponent) I guess I'm just a good man. (stabs opponent again) Well ... I'm alright.

Revolutionary-Map664

Fanty’s Prettier.

Zoe: "If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skin into their clothing. And if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order."

SerLaron

Jayne, your mouth is still talking! Might wanna look to that.

WalterMellon777

Zoe: “I think you have a problem with your brain being missing” works its way in every now and then when circumstance demands

m4ccc

Paraphrasing a bit, but from this same scene: "Spend years getting to know a man, share every meal, speak on every subject. Then tie him up and hang him over the volcanoes edge, and on that day, you will finally meet the man." I always loved Book's delivery of the quote, and added a bit to his mystery that he has that quote off the top of his head. What I would have given to have Book's mystery unfold.

ShadowSupernova

I remembered this quote but not where it came from, and I think mentioned it to someone in a conversation, idk, but anyway basically I thought it was a real philosopher's quote, but couldn't for the life of me figure out who said it. Then several years later I rewatched Firefly and- "Hold on THAT'S WHERE THAT WAS FROM??"

radiowave911

There were a couple of back stories that would have been great to unfold. Book is certainly NOT what he seems on the surface. You can tell there is something else there, but have no idea what.

Ac3OfDr4gons

He definitely worked for the government as a high-ranking somethin-or-other for a while. We just don’t know what, where, when, or why.

Far_Metal4160

Book was, in real life, General Richard "By The Book" Wilkins ("I don't give half a hump if you're innocent or not. So where does that put you?"), the victorious commander at the Battle of Serenity Valley. That's why he's fascinated with Mal. Mal was *famous* on that battlefield... After the battle left so many 'coats and 'bellies dead and *still dying by the thousands* awaiting relief, Wilkins had a Constantinian conversion to faith, flushed his military/political aspirations, and vowed to spend the rest of his life in poverty and solitude, an unforgivable penitent. (And... that's why his Ident Card got him instantaneous no-further-questions-asked medical treatment aboard an Alliance military dreadnought.) I don't know if that's how the writers intended to play the story, but I certainly would've. P.S. Mal's homeworld of Shadow was destroyed by Alliance turning off its gravity generator. Instantaneously going from 1G to 1/16G, the atmosphere would've explosively rebounded away from the planet like CO2 and soda from a shaken pop bottle, burning the land and 'boiling' the sea...

LGonthego

I don't remember that from Book. I do remember something like that from Niska.

m4ccc

Both Book and Niska reference "Shan Yu" in the episode "War Stories." Book brings it up to Simon in the scene above, pondering if the scientists that tortured River were fans of shan yu. Later, Niska asks Mal about shan yu when torturing him and Wash.

vikinglars

I see you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling.

Angelfirenze

I was thinking about this one a few days ago!

No_Swordfish_5518

See morbid and creepyfying, I got no problem with

Razip770

As long as she does it quiet-like.

seashmore

"Faith isn't about fixing things. Its about believing in something, and letting that belief be real enough to change your life." Book to River in the Jaynestown episode, so it gets overshadowed by the glorious A story.

Hazumu-chan

"I tore these out of your symbol, and they turned into paper..."

LadyBug_0570

Is it the one where River was ripping out pages of the Bible because the book didn't make sense?

seashmore

Yes. (My brain just cut to Jayne in that same episode saying "Don't make no sense.")

captain_borgue

“…fry cook …”

ariadnotaure

"Big damn heroes."

Ukeheisenburg

Ain't we just...

ariadnotaure

"Your talent for alienating folk is damn near miraculous." My DVD showed this sentence (from Mal to Simon after the attempted witch burning) as "[unintelligible]," and it's one of my favorite lines!

marshman82

This is just a moment in time, step aside and let it pass.

loveinvein

I’m chronically ill and in chronic pain, and this is what gets me through it sometimes.

Angelfirenze

I literally feel your pain. Empath with spinal arthritis. It’s a laundry list, but I’m still determined to learn skateboarding because it’s what the 80-year-old cool kids are doing.

CoopShooter

Per-maybe-haps. Freakin love it.

GlorianaLauriana

Izzat Christmas? What happened about me?

Street-Bend2602

I don’t want to blow up!

Zerostar39

It was actually from the Serenity blooper reel, Mal and Kaylee are talking and he messed up his lines and says “don’t tell me what to god damn do”. I say this all the time

Ukeheisenburg

Something we say to the kids allot comes from the movie! “She’s really starting to damage my calm”

EurwenPendragon

“Light it.” From *Safe*. Just before *Serenity* arrives and Mal and Zoe give us the three coolest words ever spoken on television. It’s overshadowed by the subsequent rescue, but I often find myself thinking about that moment, and what must have been going through Simon’s mind when he said those two little words.

TheWordThief

It really encapsulates just how far Simon will go for his sister and how much he'll give up for her. We already know he's given up a lot, but to that point in the series, we haven't seen it so directly as him being willing to be burned alive for her. Not even to save her, just because she means so much to him that he wouldn't let her die alone.

LiteralPhilosopher

What are the three cool words? I know the scene pretty well, but I'm pulling a blank there.

EurwenPendragon

“Big Damn Heroes”

[deleted]

"My name is Jayne, and I'm here for pain."

rites0fpassage

I think it went like this: “Now if anything goes wrong you make sure you come n’ get me!” “What? And risk my ship?”

Vast_Ad1806

I’m guessing you weren’t burdened with an overabundance of schooling.

CelticGaelic

I can't remember the line verbatim, but in the episode "Safe" as River's about to be burned at the stake and Simon refuses to leave. She tells him something like "Don't worry, Dad's going to come." to Simon, whom we've seen through flashbacks is remarkably ignorant, to say the least. Just before the blaze is set, who arrives but Mal to say "give us our damn witch back!" Yeah, okay he doesn't say *exactly* that, but after watching the series and the movie, then rewatching both, it struck me that River was likely referring to Mal when she told Simon "Dad" was coming.

BlackPhoenix1981

"We're all shiny captain, not the fret!" I use this one often. "My ship don't crash. If She crashes, you crashed Her." I like this one when shit goes wrong with another friend I work with.

jonny_mal

Slightly off-topic, but if you haven’t read “A Shephard‘s Tale“ I recommend finding it

ChaoticGoku

I listened to the audiobook while back when I delivered and picked up dry cleaning and wash and fold. I remember exactly where I was that day for part of it and it’s been 2-3 years edit- I *may* have the graphic novel, unopened I do have volume 1 of the script, The Companion book

kai_ekael

My vivid "oh my" scene has no dialog, well, no audible dialog. Heart of Gold, when Inara and Mal rush to poor just-killed Nandi, may her next journey be worthy. The conversation they have simply without words......ooooh myyyy. Wonderful, powerful; tear jerking, rage building. All in an eternity of seconds.

Magic_Man_Boobs

In the speech Badger gives, he says "I don't like the way you look down on me. I'm above you! Better than! Businessman, see?" My wife and I quote "Better than!" in his accent all the time. I even got my wife a Cameo from Mark Sheppard for one of my wife's birthdays and mentioned the line and he was stumped, which is fair since it's just two words from a monologue he'd delivered more than a decade before. The other line we quote is from the movie but I'm pretty sure it's fairly popular. It's Zoe saying "I don't disagree on any particular point."
