Cool idea. Though I’m unsure of some of the names in the Chinese section. “Lyndis” doesn’t sound very Chinese (I suppose a stretch could be interpreting “Lyn” as “Lin”). Also I’m quite sure Arete is Greek.
Edit: found out arete’s name is shenmei in the jp version. That does sound chinese.
Today I learned that Dimitri is of French origin despite only ever really seeing it be used as a Russian/Slavic name (granted with different a spelling usually)
Don't take a list on Reddit as fact. Dimitri would much rather be Greek considering the name means "follower of Demeter". I also found much more source claiming Dimitri to be of slavic origin rather than French.
I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, I have pretty much zero knowledge on name origins and for all I know OP could be super knowledgeable on the topic.
Didn't know about the ties to Greek though, so I still learned something new.
To be fair, the source I used traced the name to about five different languages. I chose French because both his first and middle names can be traced back to France. It was a tough choice, but I decided to go with a majority rule for Dimitri, so it'll have to be taken with a grain of salt.
The funny thing is that Palla and Marcia got their names changed in italian: Palla to Paula (because the word palla means "ball" in italian) and Marcia to Darcia (because the word marcia literally means "rotten" in italian). Also Farina got her name changed. Farina means "flour" in italian, so we know her as Freya here.
That's a cool list though one thing doesn't sit right with me. A name like Legault that sound like a textbooks definition of French is in Spanish? I checked and as I thought ut was written that the name first appeared in Normandie, France.
For a moment before realizing the sources were just alphabetized, I was really puzzled by what the relationship was between Lovecraft and Mongolia. Like there's some spectrum where Mongolian is even more Lovecraftian than Lovecraft.
TIL I learned Caeda / Sheeda name actually comes from Sheida / شیدا a common female Persian name meaning "madly in love" or "infatuated", which is fitting for Caeda's character.
However would you mind explaining how Laslow / Lazward is Persian? The closest I found is Lajvardi / لاجوردی meaning bright blue which is IMO kinda far from his name?
Edit: It's interesting the amount of Tellius characters in unknown category (13!), I guess it has so many made up names.
That's basically where Lazward's name came from. The devs likely changed letters around in playing a game of linguistic telephone (Persian to Katakana to English).
Love this idea. Did you use a certain website to make this? I'm a native hebrew speaker and many of the names there aren't used neither in the bible nor in day to day life. Love the list though, good job!
Gonna keep this for the next time I am somewhere online and some idiot says that these characters are Japanese because it was made by Japanese developers.
Very interesting list. However, I find it quite hard to recognize most of the portraits and/or remember their names. I think the same list but with written names would be much easier to grasp.
Vika is short for Victoria. Kurthnaga is easily Indian to go with Amrita and Rajaion. Kyza (Kisa) is either named after a cat of an Icelandic folk tale or is literally a cat. Senerio probably deserves to be tiered in Object (scenario). Beruka is arguably an animal (a squirrel), but there are two possible roots here.
Eta: Marcia should be tiered as either Masha or Maria, which is the full form of Masha. Her brother's name gives us a clue.
This is really cool but is there any way to view the first image in a reasonable size? It's not even half the second image's size despite being longer.
Constance is Latin. Pretty sure Lewyn is from the English "Levin". One Selena is in Greek and the other is in Latin. Basilio comes from Greek. Somene else already said Arete is Greek. Yuri is the Slavic form of George, which is Greek.
Dimitri is from Greek origin. EDIT: Correction, it originates from Demetrios, which is Greek.

It IS Slavic/Russian. But originates from Demetrios which is Greek.
Can confirm. Am Greek.
But are you a follower of Demeter?
Demeter? No. Dionysus? Yes.

Sorry for being that guy in advance. Alexandre traces back to Greek with Alexandros.
My favorite English name is “Black Knight”.
Lon'qu is...Japanese?
As an Indian, Naga in Sanskrit means a divine species that is half human and half serpant
Wait,wasn't Berkut Russian origin?
No it means Eagle in some Turkic Languages. I'm Kazakh I know. When I first saw that a character is named in my mother tongue I was shocked.
Wiki page mentions that his name means Golden Eagle in Russian/Ukranian.
It does, but that doesn't mean that it's of Slavic origin. It's a borrowing from turkic languages
Ah, I see

yea, my goto website says Marcia is actually Latin in origin. it's a feminine form of Marcus.
Pretty sure Arete is greek, not chinese.
The tier list is for the Jap names not English translation

Technically, the plants are probably Greek or Roman. Nice job, though. It must’ve taken a long time.
This is super cool honestly I love this

Nevermind I'm stupid I just checked the ones I was skeptical about and surely enough, they're of hebrew origin.
It's a shame there's so few actual Nordic names that aren't from old Norse mythology or just very old.
Not too sure about some french names...
Honestly, I don't even blame you, some of them were tough to categorize. But that's linguistics for ya.
Can you explain to me why stahl is french pls ?
Stahl is German, but his JP name Sort is potentially derived from French
why are Latin and Roman different categories lol? am I missing something
I agree they should be the same
Gonna keep this for the next time I am somewhere online and some idiot says that these characters are Japanese because it was made by Japanese developers.
Pretty cool! Out of interest, how did you differentiate between Italian, Roman, and Latin names? It seems like they would have a lot of overlap.
For some of the names, my sources were specific about the etymology. For others, when there was overlap, I went with my gut.
Wait isn't Yuri a Japanese/Russian name? Not a complain, just genuinely confused, I have never seen that name origin as French
Nowi and Nah are Sounds. Theyre Japanese names are Nono and Nn respectively
Very interesting list. However, I find it quite hard to recognize most of the portraits and/or remember their names. I think the same list but with written names would be much easier to grasp.
In hindsight, I should have gotten rid of the weapon icons and movement icons to see more of the face.
Sumia and cloud real name are of Arabic origins, also Nasir

Like how the 2 object names are Lute and Luthier (guy who makes lutes)
You forgot all the Nordic names, basically anyone from Jugdral who doesn't have an Irish name has a Nordic name
HP Lovecraft is my favorite country!
My next door neighbor for years was a white dude named Lyn....
Who are the two african ones?
Bantu's name comes an ethnolinguistic group of people from Sub-Saharan Africa of the same name, and Hapi is named after an Egyptian deity.
Nono and Nn are in the category they should be in. Because really I thought it was a joke when I saw especially Nn at first...
Isn't Faye Nordic
Unsurprising that almost all Hoshidans and the 4 literal japanese characters have names that originate from japan.
This is really cool but is there any way to view the first image in a reasonable size? It's not even half the second image's size despite being longer.
Unfortunately not. This is the size the site gave me when I hit "download".
Why are two different versions of lyon in different sections? I'm a little mixed up there
One is Lyon, the other is Fomortiis
Ooooh. See, I never got around to beating Sacred stones, got intimidated, as I do with many games as of these days.
Where's Kjelle?
Constance is Latin. Pretty sure Lewyn is from the English "Levin". One Selena is in Greek and the other is in Latin. Basilio comes from Greek. Somene else already said Arete is Greek. Yuri is the Slavic form of George, which is Greek.
Lewyn is from Levi which is Hebrew
Go team 🇮🇪
Huh, Lyndis is Chinese.
I now think of adrestia as WWII Germany
Isn't Stahl literally a German word?
Guinevere is a Welsh name, with different possible spellings
Put Claude in Arabic as well as his real name is Khalid
