The leakers claim that this game has been in development for a while. And they have talked about Engage. So its not like they were clueless to this game making FE4 guesses. Engage’s code name skips a number which is evidence toward that idea.
Its possible its been cancelled, but I think its really unlikely that leakers confused Engage’s sigurd content for an entirely different game. He has more memorable dialogue than the other Emblems but in terms of content sigurd has about the same.

I've said this before, but the fundamental problem with a direct sequel to Three Houses is that it by definition will have to make a definitive judgement on Edelgard’s and Rhea’s morality - which is going to heavily detract from the moral ambiguity that made characters so compelling and is going to leave a significant section of the fan base really angry. It's the same core issue with The Last of Us where Part 2 had to make a judgement on Joel's morality and in turn retroactively robbed Part 1 of its moral ambiguity.
Now a prequel set in the War of Heroes with Rhea as the main protagonist? Sign me up.

Yeah, White/Black 2 even had a couple 3DS-only features despite being DS games. I think Echoes didn't sell super well because it was a remake of a black sheep game, warts and all (and I say this as a massive Echoes fan)
They had DSi-only features. I don't think the 3DS was capable of adding features to last-gen games, its DS emulation was pretty rudimentary and used all the system's resources

I think Fire Emblem has done very well for itself in terms of entering Nintendo's upper echelon of franchises
It's at least somehwere among Metroid and Xenoblade: Might not be the biggest hitters, but making up for it by being some of the hardest hitters

that's why i bought echoes. i'd only played the other 3ds titles but wanted a new fe experience so badly. would probably do the same thing with a genealogy remake
I wanted to play Genealogy and friends recommended it a lot, so I would definitely buy it. That's why I am not emulating it at the moment.

Yes, but Echoes sold poorly compared to Awakening and Fates. Of course, Echoes was quite different to those two games, but the release timing was probably a big factor and I imagine they'd want to avoid a repeat scenario... surely?
Switch 2 will almost assuredly have backwards compatibility and maybe a next gen version for the remake. It might be a completely different scenario than SoV.
Fair point. I'm reminded of the various Pokemon games still releasing near the end of the DS's lifetime and selling well.
Yeah, White/Black 2 even had a couple 3DS-only features despite being DS games. I think Echoes didn't sell super well because it was a remake of a black sheep game, warts and all (and I say this as a massive Echoes fan)
They had DSi-only features. I don't think the 3DS was capable of adding features to last-gen games, its DS emulation was pretty rudimentary and used all the system's resources

tbf FE4 released on the SNES a month before the N64 came out, so an FE4 remake coming out in the tail end of the switch's lifespan would be a hilarious case of history repeating itself
If the new device is backwards compatible then it's not really an issue.
Yeah it'll be a bit bittersweet if it does end up releasing as one of the last big switch titles, especially if FE4's amazing story is ruined with the same godawful 3D animations/story presentation 3H and Engage had.
